Taylor Swift’s plain green hat was a hot topic, and her future brother-in-law Jason Kelce was thrilled to be able to cash in on it. The Kelce’s are making out like bandits since welcoming Taylor Swift in to the fam, and it’s starting to raise a few eyebrows.
Travis’ Girlfriend Lining Jason Kelce’s Pockets?
Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s romance has been center stage ever since they made the Superbowl their “coming out” as a couple.
The majority of Swifties have supported Taylor’s new man, but there has always been a small percentage of critics who were convinced Travis Kelce was using Taylor for clout and to build his own brand.

Dune 2 has unleashed its sandworms at the box office and is expected to take over with a massive worldwide collection. The second part of the 2021 box office hit Dune, with its A-list star cast led by Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya, has finally made its way to the cinemas.
That being said, Timothee Chalamet is well on his way to becoming one of the highest-grossing actors in Hollywood. Considering what he has been up to recently, there are no signs of him stopping any time soon. It has to be noted that his net worth doubled when he was as young as 25 years old, thanks to his Dune salary. One can only imagine how his salary for Dune 2 might have affected his net worth.

As superhero movies become increasingly interconnected, Christopher Nolan's "Dark Knight" trilogy already feels like a relic of a bygone era. It was a trilogy that stood entirely on its own. You didn't need to watch any other DC films to understand what was going on, nor did the movies end up needing to be watched to understand later DC films. We simply got three solid movies that took themselves seriously while still being entertaining. Whereas pretty much everyone's suffering from at least a little Marvel fatigue at this point (with their multiple movies and tv shows per year), every single "Dark Knight" film — released three to four years apart — felt like a proper event.
For Cillian Murphy, who played Jonathon Crane (aka Scarecrow) in all three movies, there's another key difference that separates these films from the superhero movies of today: none of the characters have superpowers. "It's a slightly heightened level of storytelling,...

“When I read the script, I thought these could be scenes from my childhood,” cinematographer Alice Brooks shares about Netflix’s movie musical “tick, tick… Boom!,” which is set in early 1990s Soho in New York City. Brooks’ father was an aspiring playwright and her mother a dancer, so the film about late theatre composer Jonathan Larson feels like “a very personal story” for her. “This period in New York will forever be my New York,” she says, adding, “I grew up in a tenement building just like Jonathan, with a bathtub in my kitchen.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

A column chronicling events and conversations on the awards circuit.
As the long-delayed Tony Awards signal the return of Broadway Sunday night, the reinvigorated musical invasion of Hollywood continues with the Stephen Chbosky screen adaptation of the multiple Tony Award-winning hit Dear Evan Hansen, the sole new wide release. That release follows by a week Amazon’s global streaming debut (and in some theaters) of the hit British musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.
Both focus on the trials and tribulations of teenagers in age of social media, and both rather quickly made the path from stage success to the movies (even as their stage productions are still in motion), an indication of a healthy appetite out there for the revival of movie musicals, a genre that has had its ups and downs since the MGM golden age when they were churned out almost weekly in order to help people forget tough times.

Amazon Studios has signed an exclusive first-look deal with filmmaker Nnamdi Asomugha and his company iAm21 Entertainment.
The deal follows his Emmy nomination for the Amazon original movie Sylvie’s Love, where Tessa Thompson and Asomugha played star-crossed lovers passionate about jazz in late-’50s, early-’60s New York in Eugene Ashe’s second feature. The film was ground-breaking for the main characters in the period drama and most of the cast being Black.

The enthusiasm for “In the Heights” was understandable.
Both as a symbol for creativity and for opportunities in film, but also as a broader societal statement about inclusion, there were always going to be high hopes for the fate of a film that celebrates a segment of the Latino community. Whether this ultimately helped the film, or even might have caused something of a backlash — especially considering that, after Warner Bros. marketed the film based on its inclusivity, Lin-Manuel Miranda had to apologize for its lack of Afro-Latino representation — is unclear.
And several factors separate whatever positive feeling one has about the film from how it has actually performed.
The reality is that the film’s $11.5 million opening weekend came in under expectations, even if they had been exaggerated by Film Twitter hype and very positive reviews. A non-franchise, non-sequel summer film whose intended audience includes older viewers, “In the Heights” is an anomaly,...

Update, June 17: Moreno issued a statement to The Hollywood Reporter that reads: “I’m incredibly disappointed with myself. While making a statement in defense of Lin Manuel Miranda on the Colbert Show last night, I was clearly dismissive of black lives that matter in our Latin community. It is so easy to forget how celebration for some is lament for others. In addition to applauding Lin for his wonderful movie version of ‘In the Heights,’ let me add my appreciation for his sensitivity and resolve to be more inclusive of the Afro-Latino community going forward. See, you Can teach this old dog new tricks.”
Earlier: Rita Moreno came to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s defense during a June 15 interview on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” Miranda’s film adaptation of “In the Heights” has received backlash over colorism as the cast lacks any dark-skinned Afro-Latino lead actors. Moreno, whose documentary...

Here’s a concise description of the reality of the state of moviegoing: In two consecutive weekends, Warner Bros. released two movies. One was the eighth entry in the “Conjuring” horror franchise. The other, an acclaimed musical film, celebrated as a breakthrough in representation of Latinos onscreen. Both concurrently showed at no extra cost on HBO Max for subscribers.
“The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” grossed $24.1 million. “In the Heights” managed less than half, at just $11.4 million.
Jon M. Chu’s widely anticipated and critically adored film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s 2008 Broadway musical failed to reach #1, falling $245,000 behind a strong third weekend for John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place Part II” (Paramount). The well-received sequel rose from #2 last week and dashed past the $100-million mark, the first film to do so in over a year.

In the Heights is the brainchild of Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, and it was first created for the stage, opening in 2005 before starting its Broadway run in 2008. Lin-Manuel Miranda stood onstage at the United Palace theater a few blocks from his home and, as usual, put on a good show. Microphone in hand, he invited the room to go wild: “Oh, what’s up, ‘In the Heights’ opening night!” Puerto Rican flags flew from ebullient locals across the room.
It was the first day of the Tribeca Festival, and the historic theater blocks away from where he grew up and wrote his breakthrough, the Tony-award winning musical “In the Heights,” was about to screen for a boisterous crowd a day ahead of its national release. The movie had been delayed for a year due to the pandemic, but Miranda had been trying to get it made much longer than that.

It’s been a long road to the June 10 release of “In the Heights” in theaters and on HBO Max, and not just because the Broadway musical it’s based on opened back in 2008. It was originally scheduled for release in June 2020, but was delayed for a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. But it doesn’t seem that the delay has dampened enthusiasm for it, at least not among critics.
As of this writing the film has a MetaCritic score of 83 based on 38 reviews counted as of this writing: 37 of them are positive, one is somewhat mixed, and none are negative. Those sentiments are echoed on Rotten Tomatoes, where the film is rated 97% fresh based on 129 reviews thus far, only four of which are classified as negative. The Rt critics’ consensus says, “Lights up for ‘In the Heights,’ a joyous celebration of heritage and community fueled by dazzling direction and singalong songs.

“In the Heights” (Warner Bros.) likely won’t be one of the biggest openings of the year. It is expected to rank #1 this weekend ahead of Sony’s “Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway,” with at the high end perhaps around where “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It” landed last weekend ($24.1 million). But how well it does will provide important clues as to which audiences are returning and raise possibilities for a wider set of movies getting traction.
The Jon M. Chu-directed musical, based on Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway production, is set apart from most films released anymore in several important ways. The preopening predictions of its gross — inexact these days, since they mostly poll the more limited audience that already has returned to theaters — suggest under $15 million. That would be under several recent debuts, but as always, the initial number might not tell the full story.

“In the Heights” production designer Nelson Coates had an important task from Lin-Manuel Miranda: The bodegas for the film adaptation of the stage show needed to be located east of Broadway, “because that was a historic Puerto Rican, Dominican and Cuban neighborhood.”
Anything west of that would be predominantly Irish, Russian or Jewish. The last thing director Jon M. Chu and Miranda wanted was to shoot anywhere but in the Heights. The film centers on the vibrant Washington Heights community and follows bodega owner Usnavi, played by Anthony Ramos, who dreams of a better life and returning to the Dominican Republic. Corey Hawkins (Benny), Leslie Grace (Nina), Melissa Barrera (Vanessa), Olga Merediz (Abuela Claudia) and Daphne Rubin-Vega (Daniela) also star.
Coates breaks down how he built the neighborhood seen in the movie, out June 11 in theaters and on HBO Max.

The buzz around “In The Heights” has been building for a year. Warner Bros.’ crowd-pleasing movie musical that helped Jon M. In the Heights
In the recent Yes No Maybe So post I mentioned that we were getting three musicals in the space of seven months. But that was a gross understatement as I hadn't yet finished my Oscar chart research for 2021. There are actually Ten musicals... no make that eleven (!) that are supposed to arrive before Christmas. Release dates are subject to change, of course. The current schedule represents Hollywood doubling-down, no quintupling down, on audiences salivating en masse for musicals in the way they currently only do for animated fare and superhero films.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, of Hamilton fame, is spectacularly talented but looking at this schedule we're a little worried for him. We don't want Miranda to become the next Ryan Murphy -- i.e. stretched thin, predictable, veering into being a Brand first and artist second, and offering diminishing returns. Given that Miranda is involved...

"Somewhere a place for us..." 20th Century Studios has debuted a surprise teaser trailer during the Oscar ceremony for the new Steven Spielberg movie - a remake of the classic musical West Side Story. This was filmed in the summer of 2019, and has been rescheduled for release in theaters this December - right in the middle of the next upcoming awards season, of course. An adaptation of the 1957 musical, West Side Story explores forbidden love and the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The story focuses on the love story between teenagers Tony, played by Ansel Elgort, and Maria, played by newcomer Rachel Zegler. The rest of the big ensemble cast includes Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Corey Stoll, Brian d'Arcy James, Curtiss Cook, and Rita Moreno. This looks like an exciting refresh on the classic, but don't forget Jon M. Chu...

Kerry Washington delivers a powerfully passionate performance on Hulu's Little Fires Everywhere as Mia Warren, the mysterious artist who enters the Richardsons' lives. While the streaming service has released just the first three episodes, we've already seen Mia's secretive behavior as she deals with the posh family in Shaker Heights. The reveal about Mia's past is a slow burn in Celeste Ng's novel of the same name. If you're curious to learn about who Mia is, we'll light a candle to all of her secrets as they emerge in the book.
From what we know so far in the TV adaptation, Mia is an artist who's frequently on the road with her daughter, Pearl. She's tentative about letting too many people into her life, really only opening up to Pearl. But even Pearl doesn't know everything about Mia. She doesn't know, for example, who her own father is.

Hulu's limited series Little Fires Everywhere begins where Celeste Ng's novel starts and ends: the Richardson house getting burnt to a crisp. Elena Richardson, played by Reese Witherspoon, looks at her home in disbelief. Her youngest daughter, Izzy (Megan Stott), has disappeared without a trace, and everyone is convinced she's the arsonist. After the first three episodes, there's a question that lingers: why did Izzy set fire to the home? The series hasn't given us a clear motive, but you'll find answers in the book.
So far, what we know in the Hulu adaptation is that tensions are at an all-time high between Elena and Izzy. Izzy chafes at her mother's straight-laced ways. Bullied by the girls at school, she burns her hair off, refuses to wear Elena's hand-selected clothes, and bursts out in class. Of everyone in Shaker Heights, Mia (Kerry Washington) understands Izzy for who she is: an artist.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
Presidents' Day weekend was an interesting one at the box office, and as with most holiday weekends, it was particularly difficult to figure out how things might fare, other than The Lego Batman Movie, which remained at #1 with almost $45 million over the four-day weekend. Fifty Shades Darker followed with $21.3 million, about a 50% drop. Last week, I thought that the Ice Cub comedy Fist Fight would beat The Great Wall, although it seemed like it could be a close race. Nope. Matt Damon’s action epic came in third place with $21.6 million, which is a couple million more than my original prediction, but The Fist Fight fell short of my prediction by almost $10 million, grossing $14.5 million in its first four days.

“Is it better to speak or to die?” That’s the core question of “Call Me By Your Name,” which surfaces in a scene where a character reads the words of Marguerite of Navarre in “The Heptaméron,” but it’s an idea at the heart of all queer narratives. It’s been especially present in queer cinema, where muteness and survival are often the most bittersweet bedfellows. But “Call Me By Your Name” not only quotes Marguerite’s words, it suffuses them into every fiber of its being. It’s a great film because of how lucidly it poses her question, and an essential one because of how courageously it answers it.
Directed by Luca Guadagnino with all of his usual cool (“I Am Love”) and adapted from André Aciman’s beloved 2007 novel of the same name, the rapturous “Call Me By Your Name” nearly rates alongside recent Lgbt phenomenons “Carol” and “Moonlight,...

Later this week, Lrm will be attending this year’s Sundance Film Festival. While the festival tends to be a mixed bag of indie films, some will be picked up for distribution by studios and turned into mainstream hits, others will flounder and be lucky to get a VOD release. Even so, there’s no denying that Sundance is the real beginning of the year for most movie lovers as we’ll be talking about the movies below for the next 12 months.
Last year alone, Sundance held the premieres for The Birth of a Nation, Manchester by the Sea, Captain Fantastic, Love and Friendship, The Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Sing Street and many more films, some that appeared on The Weekend Warrior’s year-end Top 25. One or two of those might even receive Oscar nominations when they’re announced next week on January 24.

We’ve never seen this before, multiple female characters open about ambition, power, and money. But representation alone does not make for a gripping tale. I’m “biast” (pro): desperate for stories about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing

To say that Wall Street shenanigans are well storied onscreen is both an understatement and a misdirection. Sure, there have been lots of movies (and documentaries) set in the world of high finance… and as with nearly ever other human endeavor that gets depicted in film, most of them are about men. Even in movies about Big Money based on real-life events in which women played significant roles, women’s contributions tend to get glossed over or eliminated entirely; see The Big Short.
