Harrison Ford's first feature film was an uncredited role as a bellhop in the 1966 James Coburn crime thriller "Dead Heat on a Merry-Go-Round." He was 24. It's wild to think that Ford, when he was 80, also starred in the 2023 blockbuster "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," which was set in 1969. The elderly Indiana Jones, if he was a movie fan, could have seen the film debut of Harrison Ford.
Sylvester Stallone's first feature film came in 1969, when he was 23. He played an uncredited extra in a film called "The Square Root." Indeed, for the first three years of his career, Stallone mostly played uncredited roles, turning up in films like "What's Up, Doc?," "Bananas," and "Klute." Stallone doesn't have a career wraparound like Ford's above, but he was recently the subject of "Sly," a documentary about his career.

The end of an era will soon be upon us, as a report from Puck says Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy plans to retire before the end of the year. Kennedy joined Lucasfilm in 2012 as co-chair alongside Star Wars creative George Lucas. A few short months into her position, Lucasfilm sold to Disney for $4 billion, prompting Lucas to pack his bags and retire to Skywalker Ranch.
Kennedy made her mark at the studio by relaunching the Star Wars universe with J.J. Abrams’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While the film banked $2 billion globally, the reset was ill-received by many long-time franchise fans. Regardless of online bellyaching, Kennedy pressed onward with two more entries in the core series, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Universal is shifting around the release dates for two major 2026 films, one from Steven Spielberg and another from “Everything Everywhere All at Once” directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.
Spielberg’s next film will open on June 12 instead of May 15. It’s taking the place of the Daniels’ untitled movie, which was taken off the calendar for now.
Universal didn’t offer a reason for the shifts, though the film from the Daniels, as the Oscar winners are known professionally, appeared to be in a nascent stage without a script, title or cast ever being announced. The studio is expected to imminently announce a new date for their movie.
Spielberg’s project, which also doesn’t have a title or logline but has been vividly described as a “new original event film,” was relocated to add distance from two expected behemoths. The untitled film was previously scheduled to open two...

Universal is shifting its untitled Steven Spielberg event film away from “Avengers: Doomsday” and “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” and straight into the “Scary Movie” reboot’s territory. The untitled Spielberg movie was originally set for a May 15, 2026 theatrical release; the film will now wait nearly another month, releasing wide on Friday, June 12, 2026.
The shift is not all about Spielberg, IndieWire has learned. The June slot was previously occupied by another untiled Universal event film, that one directed by Daniels Kwan and Scheinert. The Daniels film is now undated, but a new release date will be announced shortly. It has a script, a person with knowledge of the situation told IndieWire, but needs a little more time. Internally, the Spielberg shift is being looked at as a win-win for both films.
It’s not like there is no competition set for Spielberg’s new date — it’s just now less of a crossover with potential movie-goers.

The original Indiana Jones trilogy that ran from 1981 to 1989 is without a doubt one of the most entertaining, well-written and greatly-executed works of cinema ever. With its incredible set pieces, direction, iconic sequences and brilliant Harrison Ford performance, the original trilogy effectively told a story like no other. In 2008, a fourth Indiana Jones movie was finally made called Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull with Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas all involved once again. There was a lot of excitement around Indy's return even if the film itself didn't live up to expectations.
What some fans may not realize is that there were plans to continue the Indiana Jones series in the 1990s after Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 1989. The planned sequels would have looked to continue Indy's story after the events of The Last Crusade and possibly explore other periods of...

Oscar winning actor Ke Huy Quan was discussing his favorite action scenes from his movies with EW while promoting his new film, Love Hurts. Quan reflected upon a moment between him and Harrison Ford before they filmed the famous mine cart scene in Steven Spielberg's classic film, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Only 12 years old during production, the actor said he was frightened of the intense scene and Harrison Ford took a moment to console him.
"When we shot this sequence, I was so scared. And I cried. I remember Harrison Ford kneeling down in front of me and asking me if I was okay. He said, and I'll never forget this, 'Ke, I want you to remember, I will never hurt you.' When he said that, oh my gosh, it just made me love him so much more. Here is Indiana Jones telling me...

James Mangold is making Swamp Thing for Warner Bros and DC – but he’s insistent that the film will be standing alone.
While he might have a highly-touted Bob Dylan biopic releasing this week, director James Mangold has otherwise been engaged in a frenzy of franchise filmmaking of late. There was last year’s Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny and next up, he’ll be turning his attention to a Star Wars prequel film which is said to chart the formation of the Jedi Order.
After that, the filmmaker will be turning his attention to a Swamp Thing movie for Warner Bros that will add to the growing number of entries in the new DC Universe.
Mangold has been talking just a little about that Swamp Thing project which presumably is some years away from production, given that any given Star Wars film doesn’t exactly whizz through the Lucasfilm system these days.

Last fall, fans of Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones movie series were left frustrated when all four of the films directed by Steven Spielberg were inexplicably removed from Disney+. In the months since, only Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was available to stream, but that frustrating problem has finally been rectified.
Per What's On Disney Plus, all four Spielberg-helmed films are now streaming again on the Disney+ platform. The reason for their temporary removal is that Paramount Pictures still holds the rights to those movies, and it would appear that the Disney+ streaming license has been renewed. This puts all five of the films starring Ford back together again on one platform, though it should be noted that the classic films are still not available yet on Disney+ internationally. It's also unclear how long this new streaming agreement will last, which may eventually lead to the movies...

Steven Spielberg is set to return to the science fiction genre for the first time since 2018's Ready Player One with The Dish, a new movie written by David Koepp. The screenwriter recently opened up about The Dish and why fans should look forward to the new Spielberg feature.
Koepp briefly touched on collaborating with Spielberg on his new movie, The Dish, while speaking with TheWrap about the 25th anniversary of his movie Stir of Echoes (which he wrote and directed). After having brought the iconic franchise to an end, James Mangold is looking back on Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny's underwhelming reception. The 2023 movie saw Harrison Ford return as the titular adventurer who, after his goddaughter gets wrapped up in the quest for the eponymous device, must race against time to find it before a former Nazi scientist and his mercenaries do. Co-written and directed by Mangold, the first to direct an installment in the franchise aside from Steven Spielberg, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was met with mixed-to-positive reviews and was a box office failure.

Star Wars and Indiana Jones are the two most popular film franchises created by George Lucas, and a startling theory explains how their stories could be connected. Exhausted from Star Wars' troubled production and worried the movie would be a flop, Lucas went on vacation to Hawaii with his friend and fellow filmmaker Steven Spielberg instead of attending the premiere. While there, Lucas pitched his idea for what would eventually become Indiana Jones, and the first movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, was released four years later in 1981.
With the same incredible filmmaking and love for adventure serials that permeated the Star Wars original trilogy, it's easy to understand the fan overlap between both franchises despite the different genres. There have naturally been times when Star Wars referenced Indiana Jones and vice versa, but the world-famous archaeologist may have a more direct connection to the galaxy far, far away. By...

War of the Worlds, the sci-fi horror film directed by Steven Spielberg, will land like a mothership on a streaming service soon. The movie starring Tom Cruise will be added to Prime Video's catalog starting November 1.

Indeed, there seems to be a great deal of material to get through, which can be very overwhelming for potential fans. 5 films, a TV show, countless comics, books, games and other spinoff materials; it seems like a lot to get through. However, the canon status of many of these projects is up in the air, making things even more confusing.

Despite Harrison Ford remaining a popular actor, Indiana Jones isn't the franchise with the most longevity, resulting in some then-entertaining quotes that haven't aged well. Following the famed Star Wars alumnus' character's various quests for supernatural artifacts from the ancient world, Indiana Jones was never entirely politically correct. In addition to this, "Indy" leans heavily into the outdated James Bond trope of there always being a pseudo-Bond Girl around, generally needing to be rescued.
Even some of the best quotes in the Indiana Jones movies don't have the intended effect today. Despite the efforts of the later movies to show more respect for the histories they engage with and create better female characters, they struggle to compete with some of the earlier installments, which are generally considered the best Indiana Jones movies. Indiana Jones delivers great action and witty quotes, but which parts of them audiences want to take at face value fluctuates.

A key argument for each studio to have their own dedicated streaming service is the notion that all its beloved franchises are collected in one place for fans to watch and rewatch. However, Lucasfilm's second best-known film universe is conspicuously absent from Disney's direct-to-consumer service. With the exception of 2023's Dial of Destiny, the rest of the Indiana Jones film franchise has disappeared from Disney+. As reported by Screen Rant, the first four Indiana Jones movies, all of which were directed by Steven Spielberg, have been pulled from Disney+. Removed titles include Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008). Steven Spielberg's four Indiana Jones movies have all suddenly disappeared from Disney+ worldwide. Released in 1981, Spielberg's Raiders of the Lost Ark introduced Harrison Ford's intrepid archaeologist to the world, and he would subsequently return in four sequels, three of which Spielberg would direct. Spielberg's final installment in the franchise was Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008), with director James Mangold taking the reins for the fifth and seemingly final installment, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023).
Disney+ has now removed Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull worldwide. If you want to watch the classic “Indiana Jones” films on Disney+, you are out of luck right now. Currently, all the films have been removed except for Disney’s film “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.”
The franchise landing page on Disney+ does not include “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” “Indiana Jones the Last Crusade,” or “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.”
Now, all that is available is Disney’s film and two specials about the film.
Where did the films go?
While Disney owns the “Indiana Jones” franchise, Paramount has the distribution rights to the first four films.
In May 2013, Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy announced that the four films and the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles would stream on Disney+ along with Paramount. Both services were sharing the films for streaming, but it is possible that the deal has lapsed,...

Steven Spielberg only had this James Bond actor in mind to play the father of Indiana Jones, Henry Jones, in the third Indy film, The Last Crusade. George Lucas imagined Laurence Olivier for the role, which was initially written to be a more serious one. However, Spielberg wanted to cast Sean Connery in the role and try to outdo his James Bond role.

Connery was initially hesitant to take on the role as he was done with franchise roles after the 007 stint. He signed on to the film after Spielberg agreed to make his character a match for his son. Connery even went on to do a famous ad-lib that was hilarious and a little disturbing at the same time.

It’s not every day you hear a titan of cinema reflect so candidly, but Spielberg’s honesty shines through as he acknowledges a string of less-than-stellar projects.

Actor Shia Labeouf has fallen far from his 2000s heyday, mainly due to a series of abuse allegations and arrests for harassment, disorderly conduct and battery. Labeouf has spent the past few years attempting to rehabilitate his image, including a 2-hour-long interview on Jon Bernthal's podcast in 2022 where he talked about his path to sobriety and his many regrets.
Labeouf has also apologized for a more trivial offense: his trash-talking of director Steven Spielberg in the aftermath of "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." The 2008 film, which had originally promised to revive the franchise and maybe even set up Labeouf's character as the Indiana Jones of the new generation, was a critical disappointment, and Labeouf didn't handled it well at the time.

Despite all its shortcomings, Steven Spielberg’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull gave fans one of the most iconic moments in the entire franchise, which sees Indy taking shelter from a nuclear blast in a refrigerator. Interestingly, the seeds for this scene were sown decades back during the scripting of one of the most influential films of all time.

Like the film itself, the opening and ending of Back to the Future are iconic, and it’s hard to imagine them otherwise. But this was almost the case until Universal cut the budget for the film.

While in most cases, a reduced budget often impacts a project negatively, in Back to the Future‘s case, it was certainly a blessing in disguise.

Cate Blanchett touched down in Toronto for a wide-ranging talk about creative conflict on film sets, making big-budget films “risky,” and why her six-time Oscar-nominated film “Carol” struggled to find funding.
Blanchett, who is at TIFF supporting Alfonso Cuarón’s Apple TV+ show “Disclaimer” and Guy Maddin’s film “Rumours,” was welcomed at the Royal Alexandra Theatre with a standing ovation after fans lined up early to acquire rush tickets to the event.
Early in the conversation, Blanchett talked about her love for performing theater in front of a live audience, leading her to address the “streamers out there” that don’t release viewership data.
“We want the numbers,” Blanchett said. “Not so we know how much money is being made, but we want to know how many eyeballs have been on things that we have made. That’s greatly important.”

Shia Labeouf may have played the fan-favorite, charming, and considerably awkward Sam Witwicky in the Transformers film series, but his real-life personality differs by major extents. To say the least, the actor, filmmaker, and performance artist is one of the most confident people in the entire industry with an aggressive personality that directly contradicts Sam’s.

This has been justified by all the times the actor has perfectly displayed his strength without hesitating. But while his knocking out Tom Hardy, who is easily one of the most badass actors in all of Hollywood’s entertainment industry, in a friendly brawl is one thing, the actor recently once again almost got into a street fight that could have ended in an absolute disaster.

According to the unofficial Indiana Jones fan census, everyone pretty much agrees that Mutt Williams, played by Shia Labeouf in 2008’s Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, is the franchise’s least favorite offspring. Why? Well, not only does Mutt come out of nowhere as Indy’s long-lost son, but his leather-jacket-wearing, greaser persona just didn’t sit well with fans who were expecting something a bit more classic Indiana Jones.

People felt Shia Labeouf was a total miscast as Mutt Williams, with many struggling to believe that this annoying kid could possibly be the son of Indiana “freakin'” Jones! There was a strong sense that the franchise was just trying to cash in on Labeouf’s then-popularity. But does Mutt really deserve all that hate?

In a world dominated by superhero movies, two revered filmmakers, Steven Spielberg and James Cameron, are a class apart. They have never delved into the blockbuster genre but have produced some of the highest-grossing films of all time. Over the years, both have gained the reputation as two of the greatest directors in cinema history. They also lead the list of highest-grossing directors of all time.
However, Steven Spielberg ranks as the #1 highest-grossing filmmaker of all time. James Cameron, who ranked #2, is $2 billion short of dethroning Spielberg, who has a seven-year lead in filmmaking against him.
Steven Spielberg has grossed over $10 billion worldwide, making him the highest-grossing film director in the world. Meanwhile, James Cameron came in second with over $8 Billion. Steven Spielberg grossed $10 billion with 37 films. However, Cameron grossed over $8 billion with only 14 films. Despite Steven Spielberg ranking as the top filmmaker, Cameron has more blockbusters.

Sean Connery almost reprised the role of Henry Jones Sr. in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but turned down the role for being not that generous a part. The legendary Scottish actor would have celebrated his 94th birthday on August 25, and spent many of his last years enjoying retirement after a long and prolific film career. While his iconic role of James Bond became a focal point for many fans, there was one role that he almost came out of retirement for in 2007: Henry Jones Sr. in the Indiana Jones franchise.
Connery was a belated addition to the popular Harrison Ford saga, making his first appearance in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 1989. Harrison Ford shines as a villain in What Lies Beneath, showing his potential beyond heroic roles. Despite What Lies Beneath's mixed reviews, Ford's performance as the antagonist was chilling and memorable. Ford has not played a former villain since What Lies Beneath in 2000.
Over the course of his acting career, Harrison Ford has starred in numerous critically acclaimed movies and played many beloved characters, but there is one thing that has been sadly missing from his catalog. Ford's breakthrough in Hollywood came when he starred as Bob Falfa in George Lucas' American Graffiti. Although the 1973 comedy-drama certainly isn't what Ford is most known for, it helped build his relationship with Lucas. Consequently, American Grafitti was a key factor in Ford securing the role of Han Solo in Star Wars in 1977, which was when the actor truly rose to prominence.

An unreleased script by Frank Darabont reveals a hidden connection between Hellboy and Indiana Jones. In an early example of a legacy sequel that many fans feel is best left forgotten, you may recall that after 2008, many in the Indiana Jones fandom repeated the joke that there was no fourth film in the franchise. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was skewered by many fans upon initial release. Despite Disney renewing the franchise for another film in 2023, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, directed by Steven Spielberg, has yet to grow into that beloved status of fandom re-evaluation, as is the case with the Star Wars prequels in the last few years.

Spielberg's films share a universe with alien life forms connecting iconic movies like E.T. and Jaws. The Spielbergverse theory involves links to George Lucas's Star Wars franchise and extends to ancient civilizations. Evidence from various Spielberg films suggests that alien technologies influenced key events, like the mysterious disappearance of Bruce the shark.
In 2018, a very interesting theory made its way to FanTheoryWorld, a blog and podcast dedicated to sharing theories across many fandoms. This particular theory has the potential to completely alter the way in which you interact with the movies of Steven Spielberg.
Focusing on alien life forms from across his movies, the author, Erik Montgomery, makes a pretty convincing argument in his fan theory about how the, as he calls it, Spielbergverse, is related. Erik does make a point to suggest that, although not all of Spielberg's movies are mentioned, they nevertheless remain a part of the same universe.

Emily Blunt is in early talks to star in Steven Spielberg’s next film.
The movie, like all of Spielberg’s productions, is shrouded in secrecy, but it is an “event film,” so think special effects and vast scope. It’s based on a story that Spielberg conceived and boasts a screenplay from David Koepp, who wrote “Jurassic Park,” “War of the Worlds” and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” Universal Pictures will release the film wide on Friday, May 15, 2026.
Blunt is coming off an Oscar-nominated turn as the alcoholic wife of J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster “Oppenheimer,” as well as “The Fall Guy,” an action-comedy that was well-received by critics, but failed to ignite at the box office. She’s no stranger to massive productions, having previously starred in the likes of “Edge of Tomorrow” (going toe-to-toe with Tom Cruise) and “Into the Woods.
