Grey’s Anatomy may be a medical drama but the long-running TV series has never shied away from bringing some high-stakes drama to the table. From bombs in human cavities to active shooters, the Grey’s Anatomy catastrophes have always been intense and heartbreaking. Most of these disasters come bearing a couple of character deaths and gut-wrenching revelations, which alter the course of the story.
While the audience may feel that everything that could possibly go wrong in the world happens at Seattle Grace/Grey Sloan Memorial, these misfortunes often leave a lasting impression. These unfortunate incidents have tested relationships, shaped beloved characters, and left deep scars on the viewers.

Expansive Paris-based media group Mediawan has picked up international sales rights to the Jerusalem-set ultra-orthodox drama “The Rabbi,” which participates in this year’s Series Mania Forum at its Co-Pro Pitching Sessions.
Abuses of power aren’t unique to any one nationality, gender, sexual orientation or religion. With “The Rabbi,” celebrated filmmaker Eytan Fox proposes a fictionalized drama inspired by a true story which shocked Jerusalem’s ultra-orthodox Jewish community that proves that such abuses can happen almost anywhere.
“The Rabbi” turns on a powerful and well-known university professor from Jerusalem’s ultra-orthodox community who uses his position to influence his male students into physical relationships. Although the students are all in their 20s and the relationships consensual, there is uproar when the truth comes out, both regarding the Rabbi engaging in relationships with his subordinates and the fact that this superstar clergyman is a closeted gay man.

A middle-aged gay American travel writer rents an apartment in Tel Aviv from a laid-back film student in Eytan Fox’s formulaic audience-pleaser, “Sublet.” Venturing ever so discreetly into the kind of darker ruminations that marked his best-known films, . With two screenwriters (including the director) and three script editors credited, it may be a classic “too many cooks” situation, as the whole structure is as risk-free and standardized as a TV film, though newcomer Niv Nissem provides a freshness that papers over the conventionality of it all. Fox’s name recognition and the easy way the film goes down made it a festival success whose popularity will increase once streaming begins.

After earning acclaim with Yossi & Jagger, Walk on Water, The Bubble, and more, Israeli director Eytan Fox is returning to feature filmmaking for the first time in nearly a decade with Sublet. A selection at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival, the film will now arrive next month and the first trailer has landed.
Starring Tony Award-winning and Emmy-nominated John Benjamin Hickey and featuring the debut of Niv Nissim, Sublet focuses on a New York Times writer (Hickey) who visits Tel Aviv after suffering a tragedy. The city’s energy and his relationship with a younger man he meets there (Nissim) bring him back to life.

"Don't think it's too late for you." Greenwich Entertainment has released the first official trailer for an indie drama titled Sublet, from Israeli filmmaker Eytan Fox. This originally premiered last year at the Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival & Vancouver Jewish Film Festival, and it also stopped by BFI Flare, after originally being set to premiere at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival. In Sublet, a NY Times travel writer comes to Tel Aviv after suffering a tragedy, and he meets a young man who becomes his local tour guide. The energy of the city and his relationship with Tomer bring him back to life. The film features two stellar performances – from the Tony award winner John Benjamin Hickey and a breakout role from Niv Nissim as Tomer. The small cast includes Lihi Kornowski, Miki Kam, Peter Spears, and Tamir Ginsburg. This looks like a heartfelt, authentic look at the charm & beauty ...

There's no question that Grey's Anatomy is the number one medical drama. It boasts numerous accolades and an unending list of seasons.
It's too difficult to choose even the top five episodes when there are literally hundreds to choose from, so don't make us!
Instead, we've challenged ourselves to choose a must-see episode from each of the 16 seasons.
Whether it's an episode dedicated to a major disaster, a farewell to a long-lasting character, or a nail-biting cliffhanger, find which ones landed on our list.
And if you're looking to binge-watch some old memories, don't forget to include the episodes below!
No Man's Land (Grey's Anatomy Season 1 Episode 4)
Season 1 is the shortest of the seasons, making this an easier choice. It would be cheating to say the first episode was our favorite, so we're going smack dab in the middle.
The show was still finding its bearings, but making strong cases...

“Walk on Water” was supposed to be too big to fail. The saccharine and sentimental 2017 collaboration between Eminem and Beyoncé had all the surface-level machinations of two pop stars trying to engineer a surefire hit without ever asking if there was a reason for their song to exist. Apathy to the song was widespread — with Tyler, the Creator summing up the consensus by tweeting, “this song is horrible sheesh.”
Almost a year later, when most people had forgotten “Walk on Water” and Tyler’s tweet, Eminem responded on “Fall” by...

MTV has announced the nominees for the 35th Annual MTV Video Music Awards, which include a few new categories and are missing a couple of others. Thirty Seconds to Mars is No. 1 at Alternative Radio this week with the track “Dangerous Night,” the second consecutive chart-topper in the format (following “Walk on Water”) for the rock band fronted by Jared Leto, with a peak audience of 11.1 million, according to Mediabase.
That Thirty Seconds’ recent success aligns with the arrival of manager Evan Winiker of Full Stop Management, the firm that’s home to Harry Styles, Meghan Trainor, Mark Ronson and Charli Xcx, is apt considering both have fostered good will from the greater music industry over many years — Leto having stayed true to his vision for the group across multiple labels and a two-decades-long career, and Winiker from his time playing bass alongside hitmaker Jack Antonoff in the indie rock group Steel Train, which the New Jersey natives formed in 2002 (Winiker also appears on a Bleachers track and in a video by Antonoff’s band).

Adam Rippon, Josh Norman, and Tonya Harding went toe to toe in a dance-off for the Mirrorball trophy on Dancing With the Stars: Athletes Season 26 Episode 4.
Honestly, I thought the shortened, blink and you missed it, season would be more fun, but it's actually been exhausting, and I'm not even dancing.
However, I enjoyed the lack of filler. I'd prefer to get straight to the dancing, and that's what this abbreviated season did. On the downside, there were definitely dancers I wish had gotten more of a chance to grow, especially Arike Ogunbowale.

As usual, The CW batted last during upfront week, showing off its new slate Thursday morning at the New York City Center.
But network president Mark Pedowitz ended this week-long slog of presentations for ad buyers (and reporters) with the best present possible gift: An upfront that lasted under an hour. The brief show featured trailers for new series “All American,” “In the Dark” and their reboots for “Charmed” and “Roswell,” as well as a bit of news for its “Arrow-verse” (more on that below), but sadly no Gina Rodriguez.

Batwoman will make her first live-action appearance on any screen in CW’s Arrow crossover event next season, a four-legged actor could not get into the country, and other headlines were made at CW’s Upfront presentation this morning.
CW chief Mark Pedowitz walked media buyers through network’s expansion to six nights a week, with the add of a Sunday slate, for 12 hours of original scripted programing – trailing only CBS.
Making good on its promise to use existing series and recognizable franchises to return to Sundays nine years after turned it back to affiliate stations, Supergirl got elected to kick off the night. And, it’s paired with a re-imagining of Charmed, returning to the night it last was seen on in 2006.
Arrow darts over to Mondays. Jane the Virgin warms the bench until midseason when it returns to say so-long. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and iZombie also are set for swan-song seasons.

As the closing headliner of the Coachella 2018 festival, Eminem had a tough act to follow after Beyonce’s world-beating two-hour set on Saturday night, and he rallied an all-star team to join him on some of the biggest hits of his career: Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, Bebe Rexha, Skylar Grey and Kehlani all joined the Mc at various points during the set.
But the setlist didn’t just focus on his own hits: Dre performed his own “Still D.R.E.,” Snoop Dogg’s “Nothin’ but a G Thang” and nodded back to his own headlining set at the festival — where he was sort-of joined by a hologram of Tupac — by covering his 1996 tag-team with Pac, “California Love.” 50 Cent teamed up for a medley of “In Da Club” and “My Life,” while longtime collaborator Grey joined in on “Stan,” “Walk on Water” and “Love the Way You Lie.”

The Coachella lineup is here!
The iconic Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival kicked off 2018 by dropping this year's lineup on Twitter early Tuesday evening.
It was already well known that Beyonce would be a headliner. The 36-year-old singer was supposed to take the stage last year, but had to drop out due to her pregnancy and was replaced by Lady Gaga, but she'll be in formation this April, hitting the desert stage on Saturday.
The Weeknd will headline on Friday, and Eminem will close out the festival on Sunday. Fingers crossed this means we'll be seeing Queen Bey and Marshall Mathers perform their single, "Walk on Water," during one of their sets -- because we will not be seeing The Weeknd and Selena Gomez relive their last Coachella weekend.

If you still have an affinity for books, there can be few more choice summer reads than Edmund White's 2005 autobiography, My Lives. Divided into nonlinear sections devoted to his relationships with his parents, his hustlers, and his female entanglements, there's also a chapter entitled "My Europe." Herein White notes how while in the Paris of the 1980s, he became aware that petite green beans are tastier than their larger cousins. He also recounts how the social theorist Michel Foucault, a pal of his, noted that while "'gay philosophy' and 'gay paintings' were meaningless notions...writing gay fiction was legitimate since it enabled us to imagine how gay men should live together."
Foucault apparently "felt that relationships between gay men were tenuous, undefined, still to be invented, and that gay fiction was the place where a vision of association could be worked out in concrete detail."
The same could be said of Lgbt cinema,...

Eytan Fox's superb sequel to his award-winning love story, Yossi & Jagger (2002), has finally arrived. The original told of two Israeli soldiers situated on the Lebanese border, whose clandestine love affair was struggling to survive in a friendly yet homophobic atmosphere. Jagger, who was a little more out there, did his darnedest to loosen up Yossi (Ohad Knoller), begging him to quit the army and live with him in a more tolerant ambiance such as the one Tel Aviv could furnish. The rosy vision unsettled Yossi, but not for long. Jagger was killed in an ambush - - and buried as a brave heterosexual, at least in the eyes of his parents and his compatriots.
Now jump a decade ahead. Dr. Yossi Hoffman is a highly respected cardiologist, yet a lonely, slightly out-of-shape homosexual. A workaholic, he refuses to take vacations, and his free evenings are neatly eviscerated by TV shows with laugh tracks.

A lovingly rendered slow burn of a character study, Yossi impresses its message upon viewers with a quiet fortitude. In this sequel to Yossi & Jagger, we find Yossi (Ohad Knoller), a 34-year old heart surgeon in Tel Aviv, still mourning the loss of Jagger, his lover from a decade prior. A former fellow officer in the Israeli Defense Force. More than both a little oversensitive and a little overweight, Yossi’s obsessive inability to break from his state of grief leads him to an unending cycle of malaise. Dalliances in outdated pornography, junk food binges, and Internet dating prove to be an unsurprisingly poor substitute for love. Unsure of how to navigate his psychical shortcomings in the dating sphere, he posts photos of his healthier, younger self so as not to scare off potential suitors on dating sites. As Yossi is Eytan Fox’s (The Bubble, Walk on Water) touching follow-up to the controversial Israeli film illustrating...

Film: Footnote (2011) Cast includes: Lior Ashkenazi (Walk on Water), Shlomo Bar-Abe (Witness in the War Zone) Writer/Director: Joseph Cedar (Beaufort) Genre: Comedy | Drama | Satire (103 minutes) Hebrew with subtitles It's the "most difficult day in Professor Eliezer Shkolnik's life." Today his son, Professor Uriel Shkolnik, is being inducted into Israel's National Academy. It's obviously a family of academic over-achievers, who inhabit a world of scholars, measuring their self-worth by the academic organizations they've been invited to join, the prizes they've won and the scholarly works they've published. So why is it such a difficult day for Eliezer Shkolnik? Well, "there are a few things worth knowing about Shkolnik (father)." On the brink of publishing the findings of 30 years worth of Talmudic research, his efforts were undermined and rendered worthless by that scoundrel, Grossman. Today, all Shkolnik (father) can boast is an obscure footnote citing him in someone else's research paper.

With just six days until Oscar nominations, the Academy has released the finalist list for Best Foreign Language Film. Iran's wondrous A Separation (see my top ten list) might just go all the way. While it's true that most pundits are already predicting just that, I've been more cautious. Masterpieces are often tripped up in this category by more heartwarming or traditonally baity mass-appeal films in the final heat. The biggest surprise here might be the omission of Lebanon's 'can't we all get along' musical Where Do We Go Now? which some pundits, including myself, had suspected might be a real threat given its populist pull. It won the People's Choice at Toronto which generally bodes well for Oscar traction. Not this time.

Rating (out of 5): ****
Back in the spring of 2002, a film from Ussr-born Israeli writer/director Dover Kosashvili opened in New York City, later arriving on DVD and cable channels. Late Marriage (Hatuna Meuheret) -- an enormously sexual, smart and angry broadside against Israeli fundamentalism -- knocked the socks off a lot of us, though it may have appeared at the time that its strong and sexy leading man Lior Askenazi (Walk on Water) was the linchpin many of us remembered most. For his part, Kosashvili went on to make Matana MiShamayim (English title: Gift from Above) in 2003, which, though nominated for eleven Israeli Film Academy awards, was not much seen outside its home country.

New York (May 13, 2011) -- Sony Pictures Classics announced today that they have acquired all North American and Latin American rights to Joseph Cedar’s Footnote from WestEnd Films. The film is a contender for the 2011 Cannes Film Festival Palme D’Or. Cedar’s last film Beaufort was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film in 2008. Footnote follows a great rivalry between a father and his son, their need for each other and their need for respect and recognition in the world. The film stars Shlomo Bar Aba and Lior Ashkenazi, and was produced by David Mandill (Beaufort, Campfire) and United King (Lebanon, Walk On Water). “Sony Pictures Classics represents the best in world cinema,” explained WestEnd chairman and co-founder Sharon Harel. “They are the perfect home for this wonderful film and very special director.” “When we met Joseph Cedar a few years ago, we knew he was a director of extraordinary talent.

Brad Pitt in Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life (top); Naomi Kawase's Hanazu no tsuki (bottom) As usual, the Cannes Film Festival's Official Competition film line-up is overwhelmingly centered on European (co)productions: British, French, Austrian, Italian, Spanish, Danish. The five "outsiders" hail from Israel, Australia, the United States, and Japan. In other words, barring one American entry, the Americas were completely ignored this year, and so were Africa, most of Asia, and — barring Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Turkish-Bosnian Once Upon a Time in Anatolia — what used to be known as "Eastern Europe." (Remember, Bosnia-Herzegovina was part of Yugoslavia.) The non-European entries are listed below: Joseph Cedar's Footnote (Israel), a father-son drama set at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, with Walk on Water's Lior Ashkenazi; Newcomer Julia Leigh's Australian mix of mystery, sex, and fantasy Sleeping Beauty, starring Sucker Punch's Emily Browning (who replaced...

Tawfik Abu-Wael is a 35 year-old Arab-Israeli filmmaker who appears to be set for a second splash in Cannes. Born and raised in the northern town of Um El Fahm, at an early age, he went against his family wishes, and moved to Tel Aviv, where he studied the art of filmmaking. In 2004 his feature debut Atash-Thirst received heavy critical praise and it won the Fipresci award in Cannes that year. Domestically, it won an Ophir Award (Israeli Oscar) for Best Cinematography and another award for Best Israeli Feature at the Jerusalem Film Festival. Atash-Thirst was a highly stylized story of an Arab family living in a secluded location, struggling with a lack of running water. The film opened a window to the lives of Arabs in Israel, not often depicted on the screen by their own sons. In the seven years since his debut, Abu-Wael has been painstakingly raising funds for his second feature.

It seemed like director Eytan Fox disappeared from the public eye, but this year he's planning a comeback. 20 years ago his short film After made a name for him as someone who put homosexuality at the center of his works. He moved on to direct a few other features and TV series, his breakthrough came a decade later, with Yossi and Jagger, a 65 min TV film that broke out from the little screen to be shown at movie theaters locally and internationally. His follow-up was the hugely successful Walk on Water, and after that came 2007's The Bubble, which was a local commercial success, but became a punching bag for most of the critics. Almost four years later, Fox is back: earlier this year it was announced that a Mamma-Mia type TV series he directed was re-cut into a feature length film, and sold to distribution in the U.S.
