Last night at the Deadline-hosted celebration of the Black List 20th anniversary, founder Franklin Leonard told attendees that there was more to come.

Just one day after the Travis Braun-topped 20th anniversary list came out, the Black List Wednesday revealed the inaugural Adaptation List. The selection highlights 61 novels published since the first list came out in 2005 that are primed to be made into big screen and small screen projects.

“There was only one real way to celebrate twenty years of annual Black Lists, make another list that celebrates writers and in so doing makes it more likely that great film and television gets made,” Black List chief Leonard said Wednesday of the list that includes books by Jennifer Egan, Jeffrey Eugenides, and N. While The Black List has long been the go-to platform to discover indie scripts and hot new voices, the acclaimed organization is now launching an inaugural Adaptation List to spotlight the novels that industry insiders most want to see adapted for the screen.

These days, novel adaptations have been heating up Hollywood, thanks in no small part to the rise of BookTok. Beloved BookTok authors like Emily Henry and Colleen Hoover have already been slated to have their respective books brought to film and TV, while Taylor Jenkins Reid has been building a franchise of interconnected stories, including “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo,” “Malibu Rising,” and “Daisy Jones and the Six.”

The Black List founder Franklin Leonard and Creative Director of Fiction Randy Winston surveyed 84 publishing industry editors and literary agents, who selected the 61 novels that they believe are poised for adaptations. All novels had to be published after 2005, when The Black List launched.

Netflix has given a formal greenlight to His & Hers, a psychological thriller starring and executive produced by Tessa Thompson. The six-episode limited series, adapted from Alice Feeney’s novel, comes from writer/executive producer Bill Dubuque; writer/executive producer Dee Johnson, who serves as showrunner; filmmaker William Oldroyd, who serves as a writer, executive producer and will direct the first episode; as well as executive producers Jessica Chastain and Kristen Campo. Fifth Season is the studio.

Set in the sweltering heat of Atlanta, Anna (Thompson) lives in haunting reclusivity, fading away from her friends and career as a journalist. But when she overhears about a murder in Dahlonega – the sleepy town where she grew up – she is snapped back to life, pouncing on the case and searching for answers. Detective Jack Harper is strangely suspicious of her involvement, chasing her into the crosshairs of his own investigation.

Primetime Emmy nominee Tessa Thompson’s Viva Maude has closed a multiyear first-look film deal with Amazon MGM Studios.

The actress, who has starred in the studio’s movies Creed III and Sylvie’s Love, launched her production company Viva Maude in 2020. The label’s mission is “to influence culture through projects that defy categorization and are manifestly entertaining,” per the press release.

Viva Maude is already in business with Amazon MGM Studios, under its Orion Pictures banner, on Hedda, a reimagination of Henrik Ibsen’s famed 1891 stage play Hedda Gabler, written and directed by Nia DaCosta and starring Thompson. Cameras are currently rolling on the pic.

Amy Adams, Paul Rudd and Tessa Thompson have joined the cast for the comedy ‘The Invite,’ based on Cesc Gay’s Goya-winning 2020 Spanish film ‘Sentimental.’

The feature tells the story of Joe (Rudd) and Angela (Adams), who after 15 years of marriage, find that their relationship is in a rut. Desperate to have a conversation that isn’t focused on their marital woes, Angela invites their boisterous neighbours, Kayla (Thompson) and Shane, over for cocktails. Joe irritated at having to engage with this disruptive couple, plans to use the occasion to confront them; however, both he and Angela get far more than they bargained for as sparks fly and they discover Shane and Kayla are hosting weekly orgies and have an invite of their own to offer.

Jackrabbit Media will begin sales talks at EFM this week on supernatural horror Baby Blue, ScreenDaily reports this morning. Additionally, the website reports that Baby Blue will get its North American release via XYZ Films this coming Spring.

In the film from Microdose Entertainment and director Adam Mason, “A group of teens stumble across the story of the dead serial killer Baby Blue. When they turn him into the subject of a podcast they soon learn that his murder spree never ended and they are being targeted from beyond the grave.”

Simon Boyes (Songbird, Hangman) wrote the script for Baby Blue, which was Executive Produced by Johannes Roberts, who horror fans know as the director of 47 Meters Down, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, and even The Strangers: Prey at Night.

Thompson plays a space station worker who wakes up on a distant planet to find her colleagues viciously killed, and then forced to work together with the man (Gordon-Levitt) sent to rescue her. But as their investigation into what happened sets in motion a terrifying chain of events, the rescuer begins to wonder how innocent she really is.

Executive produced by Neill Blomkamp (“District 9”), “Ash” is based on an original screenplay written by Jonni Remmler. New science fiction thriller Black Antenna is set against Alice in Chains' Rainier Fog album and goes straight for the teeth.

Black Antenna has come raining down as Alice in Chains reminds us why we even care anymore. With an insistent beat, the Seattle sound pioneers are going where no grunge band has gone before. Alice In Chains released the first two episodes of Black Antenna, a 90 minute science fiction thriller which will be released in 10 segments before coming out as a full movie.

Directed by Adam Mason, written by Paul Sloan and Adam Mason and produced by Elizabeth Mason and Nick Vallelonga, who is coming off Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture Oscars for Green Book, Black Antenna is set against songs from Alice in Chains' sixth studio album Rainier Fog.

Alice in Chains dropped Rainier Fog on August 24, 2018. It is named after Seattle's volcano Mount Rainier.
