Marvel wasn't always the powerhouse that it is now. Even years after "Blade" and "X-Men" hit it big, it took a while for the industry to catch up and start regularly turning Marvel Comics characters into successful theatrical franchises. When "Iron Man" hit theaters in 2008 and kicked off the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it, everything changed. But in the early 2000s, there was kind of a wild west vibe going on. In that time, some real clunkers made their way out into the world. "Elektra" is at or very near the top (or perhaps bottom) of that list.

Fargo Star Billy Bob Thornton Reveals Why He Turned Down Green Goblin Role In Sam Raimi's Spider-man
Billy Bob Thornton is best known for roles in Love Actually, Bad Santa, Fargo, and Landman; aside from a cameo in the animated Harley Quinn, the actor has avoided comic book fare but recently confirmed that he was offered the chance to suit up as one of Marvel's most iconic villains.
Talking on The Playlist's Bingeworthy podcast, the actor reflected on turning down two major villain roles: the Green Goblin in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man and Owen Davian in J.J. Abrams' Mission: Impossible III.
"I don’t have much interest in those kinds of roles," Thornton explained. "With the Green Goblin, I didn’t feel like getting up at 4 a.m. for five or six hours of makeup. And with 'Mission: Impossible III,' I didn’t want to be the guy trying to kill Tom Cruise."

Back in 2021, the director had announced a Black Superman movie to be in development over at Warner Bros. 3 years later, we may not have any updates about it but we do know that the Black Superman movie is fighting with everything that it has got.
J.J. Abrams’ Black Superman movie is still in the works!
It was part of a $500 million mega-deal between the director and Warner Bros. However, it doesn’t seem the studio has much to show for it. According to a report by Variety, Warner Bros. wanted to keep Abrams as a sort of hiring authority for various projects and movies.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning had the highest budget of any film in the Mission: Impossible franchise, somewhere in the range of $290 million… but the box office numbers took a dip, the film ending up with a haul of $566 million at the worldwide box office. A lower amount than Ghost Protocol ($694 million), Rogue Nation ($688 million), and Fallout ($786 million) had earned. And they all had substantially lower budgets. With the next film, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, set to reach theatres on May 23, 2025, the folks working behind-the-scenes might have an idea that the franchise needs to be shaken up a bit. According to a Rumor shared by The Sun, they’re going to attempt to do this by pulling a younger version of Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt character into the action.

Variety reports that Billy Bob Thornton turned down two big villain roles and he explains why he wasn’t interested while on The Playlist’s Bingeworthy podcast. Thornton revealed that he turned down playing the Green Goblin in Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man, as well as Owen Davian, the villain of J.J. Abram’s Mission: Impossible III, which eventually went to Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Thornton expounded,
I don’t have much interest in those kinds of roles. With the Green Goblin, I didn’t feel like getting up at 4 a.m. for five or six hours of makeup. And with Mission: Impossible III, I didn’t want to be the guy trying to kill Tom Cruise. If you’re the bad guy in a big movie like that, audiences remember it forever. Billy Bob Thornton rejected the chance to play a 'Mission: Impossible III' villain because he "didn't want to be the guy trying to kill Tom Cruise". The 'Bad Santa' actor wasn't interested in portraying arms dealer Owen Davian in the 2006 movie, which sees the character - who was played by the late Philip Seymour Hoffman - go up against Cruise's Ethan Hunt. And ahead of Sam Raimi's 2002 'Spider-Man' movie, Thornton turned down the part of Norman Osborn/ Green Goblin - which went to Willem Dafoe - because he didn't want to wake up in the early hours and sit in a makeup chair for "five or six hours". Speaking The Playlist’s 'Bingeworthy' podcast, he said: "I don’t have much interest in those kinds of roles. "With the Green Goblin, I didn’t feel like getting up at 4 a.m. for five or six hours of makeup.

While a custom-made popcorn bucket designed to emulate a certain movie isn’t a new development, the trend has certainly spiked this year after the viral sensation of the Dune: Part 2 sandworm bucket that garnered many jokes online. One movie that definitely capitalized off Dune‘s suggestive imagery was Deadpool & Wolverine, as they made a bucket where the entry was the oversized mouth of Wolverine. This year also saw custom popcorn buckets for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Alien: Romulus, Gladiator II, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and even a special Batman one to commemorate the character’s 85th anniversary. Time has revealed that not only will there be a special edition popcorn bucket for next year’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, but Tom Cruise himself had helped to design it. According to Rob Bennett, the director of food and beverage product strategy at AMC, Cruise would be instrumental in guiding...

The recently released trailer for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (which you can watch in the embed above) showed that there’s going to be a lot of water-based action in this new sequel, and now a behind-the-scenes video has arrived online to show us a moment of star Tom Cruise preparing to perform some of those underwater stunts. Almost six years have gone by since Tom Cruise announced that Paramount Pictures had given the greenlight to two more Mission: Impossible movies, with Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) and Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) writer/director Christopher McQuarrie returning to the helm. At one point, we thought these movies were going to carry the titles Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two… but Paramount has backtracked from that decision. After Dead Reckoning Part One underwhelmed at the box office when it was released last year, the studio has dropped Part One from the subtitle and has let it be known that the next film, which is still in production, will have a different title. A decision they really should have made before releasing the first half of the story. At least we’re still getting the second half of the story, with the...

Samuel L. Jackson is in negotiations to star in the next movie from director J.J. Abrams.
If the deal closes, he’ll join a cast that includes Glen Powell, Jenna Ortega and “Sex Education” star Emma Mackey. Abrams is writing and directing the untitled feature, of which details have been kept under wraps. Bad Robot, the company founded by Abrams, will serve as a producer.
Warner Bros. is backing the film, which is expected to commence production in the United Kingdom this spring. It’s unclear when the movie is slated to hit theaters.
This new project is Abrams’ first directorial effort since 2019’s “Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker,” which culminated the nine-part saga to the tune of $1 billion at the global box office. Jackson, who portrayed Jedi Master Mace Windu in the “Star Wars” prequel trilogy, briefly worked with Abrams for a voice cameo for the climax of “Rise of Skywalker.

A fun piece of trivia: one of J.J. Abrams' first professional gigs was writing the music for Don Dohler's 1982 horror cheapie "Nightbeast." Dohler, as B-movie fans might know, is the creative mind behind "The Alien Factor" and "Galaxy Invader," movies that were filmed mostly in the woods. Abrams has since become one of the preeminent makers of big-budget mainstream blockbusters, so it's fun to picture him as a teen handing over tapes to a hard-working schlockmeister like Dohler.
Abrams stuck with it, though, and eventually sold a film treatment to screenwriter Paul Mazursky when he was still in college. That treatment became Arthur Hiller's 1990 comedy "Taking Care of Business" with Jim Belushi. Abrams continued to rise through the ranks of Tinseltown from there, penning the scripts for films like "Regarding Henry," "Forever Young," and, uh, "Gone Fishin'." It’s hard to imagine Tom Cruise saying goodbye to Ethan Hunt, the character he’s dutifully portrayed since 1996’s Mission: Impossible. But the teaser for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which dropped today, sure makes it seem like the end of the road for a character that’s outlasted countless crises, two James Bonds, and five presidential administrations.

It is time to rejoice, as Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is back to save every living human from doom in "Mission: Impossible -- The Final Reckoning," which will continue the convoluted saga of "Dead Reckoning." The newly released trailer for "The Final Reckoning" is as thrilling and exciting as you would expect, with a lot of characters from previous installments — including Rolf Saxon's William Donloe and Angela Bassett's Erika Sloane — coming back with covert intentions. And you know what else is back? The Rabbit's Foot, the dangerous biological hazard from "Mission: Impossible III," makes an appearance in the "Final Reckoning" trailer, leaving us to mull over its fate since we last saw it in Ethan's hands and what its return could mean for the conclusion to the "Mission: Impossible" films.

Can anyone imagine being invited to work with an idol? That’s exactly what happened to J.J. Abrams, but it couldn’t have been worse timing. He had the chance to team up with Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise on War of the Worlds, but fate had other plans. To this day, he looks back on that moment with a ton of regret.

Fortunately for him, the tides turned, and his dream finally came true — not just with the director of E.T., but also with an actor who seemed genuinely impressed by him. Cruise’s invitation was nothing short of amazing, and it turned out to be the right move, as the production directed by Abrams ended up being the one that essentially saved one of the biggest action franchises out there.

In a rare case of life imitating art, Tom Cruise has never taken on a task that he ever deemed impossible. From saving Hollywood by reviving the theatrical distribution system to greenlighting movies with a single phone call, nothing gets past the actor when it concerns the business of filmmaking.

Tommy Harper is used to getting phone calls featuring unusual requests. His phone might ring and it’s Tom Cruise and Joseph Kosinski asking him to figure out how to film Top Gun: Maverick in real jets. Or J.J. Abrams is on the line, asking how to bring the massive crew of a Star Wars movie to a remote island in Ireland. Maybe it’s Tim Burton, wanting help choreographing an off-kilter musical number for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
“You’re like, ‘Ok, that’s a puzzle I have to figure out,’’ says Harper. “I love receiving those phone calls.”
Just like characters in movies he’s worked on, Harper is used to journeying to strange new worlds, and he prides himself on the end goal of “having the audience sit in a cinema, turn off the lights and be transported for two hours.”

Joseph Quinn had some big sandals to fill as a villain in Ridley Scott‘s long-awaited sequel to 2000’s Gladiator.
The Gladiator II star recently opened up about the “reverence” he has for Joaquin Phoenix‘s performance as Commodus in the original movie as he revealed some inspirations for his portrayal of Roman emperor Geta.
“For obvious reasons, Joaquin Phoenix’s performance was something that was in our minds,” explained Quinn to Empire. “It was something we had a reverence for, but we didn’t want to…. soil with some kind of poor rendition.”
Instead, Quinn turned to Philip Seymour Hoffman’s performance in Mission: Impossible III, as well as Gary Oldman in The Fifth Element, whom he said “has this relish for being horrible.”
In the sequel, Emperor Geta rules alongside his brother, Emperor Caracalla (Fred Hechinger), whom Scott described to Empire as “the equivalent of Romulus and Remus” in Roman mythology.

Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger face big challenges in the upcoming movie Gladiator II. They must portray real-life Roman emperor brothers Geta and Caracalla, following Joaquin Phoenix’s acclaimed role in the original film. But rather than try to mimic Phoenix’s performance, the actors sought inspiration elsewhere.
In an interview with Empire magazine, Quinn said he and Hechinger wanted to “create something distinct” and avoid copying Phoenix. Instead of looking primarily to the original Gladiator, they studied other memorable villainous portrayals. Quinn admired Gary Oldman’s energy as the villain in The Fifth Element. Both actors also drew inspiration from Philip Seymour Hoffman’s ruthless character in Mission: Impossible III.

In crafting his Emperor character in the upcoming legacy sequel “Gladiator II,” Joseph Quinn knew he had big shoes to fill. In the first film, Joaquin Phoenix’s performance as the power-hungry Emperor Commodus earned him an Academy Award nomination and helped propel the actor’s stardom. While Quinn and his co-star Fred Hechinger were careful to keep Phoenix’s performance in mind as they crafted their own, in a recent interview with Empire, he shared how he also found inspiration elsewhere.

Every good arena spectacle needs its villain. Gladiator had Joaquin Phoenix’s weaselly Commodus. BBC favourite gameshow Gladiators had Wolf. Now, Ridley Scott’s next Roman epic, Gladiator II, is doubling the hissable-baddie quotient: make way for mad Emperors Geta and Caracalla, twins with insatiable egos who delight in the brutal bloodshed of the Colosseum’s gladiatorial combat. Together – played by Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger – they’re going to make life particularly difficult for Paul Mescal’s incoming fighter Lucius.
“For obvious reasons, Joaquin Phoenix’s performance was something that was in our minds,” Quinn tells Empire, speaking on behalf of Hechinger too. “It was something we had a reverence for, but we didn’t want to.... soil with some kind of poor rendition.” Instead, they drew from other performances of delectable, unapologetic villainy – ones you can’t help but get swept up in, even when rooting for the hero.

Director Ti West's conclusion to the "X" trilogy is coming home. West and star Mia Goth rounded out their decades-spanning horror trilogy this year with "MaXXXine," picking up a little while after "X" left off ("Pearl" was a prequel). The film brings the action to the '80s with Goth's Maxine Minx trying to fulfill her dream of becoming a star, and naturally, things get bloody along the way. For those who may have missed the retro, murderous trip through Hollywood, fear not! You can now watch the film from the comfort of home.
A24 has released "MaXXXine" on VOD following its successful run at the box office. The movie is now available through a variety of digital retailers such as Apple TV, Google Play, Fandango at Home, and Prime Video, among others. It is currently available to rent...

When a movie enters the post-production stage, a lot of changes can happen that make the film unrecognizable. Plot points can be added or removed, and that is when the film truly begins to take shape. This can also involve cutting out entire characters for the sake of making the film better. Unfortunately, this is exactly what happened to Michelle Monaghan in Constantine.
Tom Cruise and Michelle Monaghan in Mission: Impossible 3 I Paramount Pictures
The 2005 film, starring Keanu Reeves, was certainly iconic in many ways. However, there was one key element that the producers ended up cutting out in post-production; Monaghan’s character. While this change was done internally and helped give the film the theme they were looking for, fans cannot help but be upset that it was done at the expense of the actress.
