That wasn’t just a dream. On Thursday night, for four-and-a-half glorious minutes, R.E.M. was back onstage for the first time in 15 years.
At the Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, Bill Berry had the room in a collective gasp as they performed one of their biggest hits, “Losing My Religion.” You could hear each instrument as clear as a bell, and it highlighted the primitive chemistry between four unlikely friends from Athens, Georgia, who invented indie rock and created a body of work...

After a gap of a few years and a messy-yet-secretive legal dispute between creators Doug Naylor and Rob Grant, Red Dwarf is rumoured to be back on its way to our screens once again with three new episodes. Which poses the question – how many more returns can it make before it finally draws to a close? How will the TV series that started with a pilot episode called “The End” end?
Red Dwarf is unlike any other science fiction franchise of comparable longevity. It is not like Stars Trek or Wars, an expansive universe full of side characters and unexplored domains for spin-offs to inhabit. Nor is it the adventure of a single character whose face changes on a semi-regular basis.
As part of the ongoing mysterious feud settlement, Rob Grant is launching Red Dwarf: Titan, which is set to give us a prequel/alternate universe take on Lister and Rimmer.

Over the past couple of decades, the Rolling Stones have looked for any reason to hit the road besides the release of a new album of original songs. They’ve launched tours celebrating their 50th anniversary, reissues of select archival records, the 2016 covers LP Blue & Lonesome, and their 60th anniversary. Some years they headed out on the stadium circuit for no particular reason whatsoever, knowing a Stones tour is a major event in and of itself.
But after a nearly two-year break from touring, the Stones emerged last year with the shockingly great Hackney Diamonds.

Coachella crowds are notoriously awful, but the response to Blur’s Saturday set was especially jarring.
By all accounts, the Britpop legends put on a phenomenal show. Their setlist contained several surprises, including rare performances of “Death of a Party,” “Out of Time,” “Trouble in the Message Centre,” and “Beetleblum,” as well as an on-stage collaboration with the indigenous Torres Martinez Cahuilla Bird Singers.
And yet, whether because the younger-skewing audience was unfamiliar with the band’s discography and/or because they had showed up early for Tyler, the Creator’s headlining set that was to follow, the crowd didn’t seem to vibe with Blur’s music. Video from the festival’s livestream (as seen below) captured a pretty lifeless crowd — even during performances of anthems like “Popscene,” “Girls & Boys” and “Song 2.”

Blur took the stage at Coachella on Saturday, and to close out their portion of the night, they brought out performers from the Torres Martinez Cahuilla Bird Singers.
It was Blur’s first time at Coachella since 2013 (though Damon Albarn has made a few surprise appearances in recent years), and the band delivered renditions of some of their most beloved songs, like “Song 2,” “Girls & Boys,” “Beetlebum,” and more.
The Britpop legends first brought out a group of Bird Singers to perform a traditional piece titled “Bird Song,” honoring the culture and history of the indigenous tribes of the Coachella region. From there, the Bird Singers loaned their voices to Blur’s “Death of a Party,” and then returned at the end of the night to close out the set with “Tender.”
Elsewhere in Blur’s set, Albarn made an appeal for mutual understanding in a time of political polarization,...

Actor Denzel Washington has had his fair share of love scenes in his long career. For many female actors, shooting love scenes can be uncomfortable when they have to remove clothing. But one actor insisted to undress for Washington in this action thriller.

Washington collaborated with Mark Wahlberg first time in his 2013 feature 2 Guns. He signed on for the project because he needed to star in something light after doing the heavy drama Flight. A lighthearted romp with Wahlberg was exactly what he needed. But the actor also found himself teaming up with a familiar face in actor Paula Patton.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we’re honored to chat with director Carl Franklin, whose seminal noir One False Move is now available from The Criterion Collection as a director-approved special edition 4K Uhd + Blu-ray.
Our B-Sides today are One True Thing, Out of Time, and Bless Me, Ultima.
We talk to Franklin about his early days as an actor, how he got the directing bug, what he learned making movies with legendary producer Roger Corman (and the other producer on one of the films who allegedly stole 80k of a 200k budget!), and the extremely underrated HBO mini-series Laurel Avenue from 1993.

Summer isn’t over yet but HBO and its streaming arm Max are already moving on to fall. With its list of new releases for August 2023, Max is focusing on football! The American kind, mind you, not the actually footy kind.
August 2023 sees the release of two major football documentaries on HBO and Max. The first is the premiere of Hard Knocks on Aug. 10. The new season of long-running NFL training camp docuseries will center on the New York Jets, new employers of legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers. On Aug. 23, Max will air the aptly named Bs High. The doc tells the stranger-than-fiction story of high school football team Bishop Sycamore, which pulled off one of the more notable sports scams you’re likely to ever hear about.
Not of the football variety but in keeping with the North American sports theme will be season 2 of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty on Aug.

31 years after its initial theatrical release, Carl Franklin still can't believe "One False Move" happened.
The actor-turned-director took a crackerjack screenplay by a pair of struggling writers named Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson, and turned what was supposed to be a direct-to-video thriller featuring a couple of familiar faces (Bill Paxton and Cynda Williams) into a buzzy critical darling. After a brief theatrical run, the film earned five Independent Spirit Award nominations, with Franklin taking home the trophy for Best Director.
Despite this acclaim, "One False Move" has remained an under-the-radar cult favorite amongst neo-noir fans, perhaps because it lacks the Coen Brothers' archness or the overripe sensuality of Lawrence Kasdan's "Body Heat." It's a quietly surprising, yet plenty violent thriller about a trio of criminals who, after committing a string of vicious murders, flee Los Angeles for a backwater Arkansas town run by police chief Dale "Hurricane...

Staind have fleshed out the details of their forthcoming album, Confessions of the Fallen, which will mark the band’s first new full-length since 2011. The 10-track record will arrive on September 15th via Alchemy Recordings/BMG. In addition, Staind have also debuted a new song off the set, the scorching “Cycle of Hurting.”
“Cycle of Hurting” is classic Staind, with heavy guitars, dark rhythms and Aaron Lewis’ tortured vocals, including some intense roars. “How can I face what’s under the surface / When nothing is working? / How can I break away from the burden / The cycle of hurting?” frontman Aaron Lewis sings in the chorus.
Regarding the dark lyrics of “Cycle of Hurting,” Lewis said in a press release, “I’m still working through my issues. Still working through my problems, and until then I’ll dream of better days. I hope that’s how everybody feels right now…better days are yet to come.

R.E.M. has teamed up with “The Bear” on a full-length music video for “Strange Currencies (Remix).”
The four-minute video combines footage from “Road Movie,” which documents the alternative rock band’s 1995 tour, with exclusive clips and behind-the-scenes footage of the FX series’ second season, which premiered June 22 on Hulu.
Released as the third single on the album “Monster” in 1995, “Strange Currencies” follows a lovelorn protagonist who yearns to win over a mysterious crush. The song was a Top 10 hit in the UK, a Top 20 hit in Canada, and peaked at No. 8 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart.
The remix, which was featured prominently in the official Season 2 trailer on May 15, first appeared on 2019’s “Monster (25th Anniversary Edition),” where the band’s longtime producer Scott Litt revisited the best-selling 1994 album, offering a fresh perspective on each track.

If you love the edgy, raw, and unfiltered "Euphoria," buckle up for another thrilling ride with HBO's newest series "The Idol." The masterminds behind the series are none other than "Euphoria" director, writer, and producer Sam Levinson, as well as Abel Tesfaye, better known by his stage name, The Weeknd. In addition to creating and coproducing the series, the "Out of Time" singer will also share the screen with a handful of talented actors, including Lily-Rose Depp, Troye Sivan, and Debby Ryan.
"The Idol" focuses on several heavy themes, ranging from drug use and excessive partying to Hollywood cults, which has many wondering if the realistic and intense storyline draws any influence from reality. While the series is not based on a singular true story, it's hard to imagine this show wasn't inspired by the dark underbelly of the entertainment industry.

Award-winning musician Abel Tesfaye, known professionally as The Weeknd, has begun the process of slowly shedding his stage name. The singer has now changed his social media platforms to reflect his birth name.
“I’m going through a cathartic path right now,” Tesfaye told W magazine earlier this month. “It’s getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close The Weeknd chapter. I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will. Eventually. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be reborn.”
“The album I’m working on now is probably my last hurrah as the Weeknd,” he said of his upcoming yet-to-be-titled record. “This is something that I have to do. As the Weeknd, I’ve said everything I can say.”

Dead to Me is a series created by Liz Feldman, starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini.
Dead to Me (2019 – 2022)
A great series starring the two great actresses, Applegate and Cardellini. It fuses thriller and comedy in an intelligent and, above all, very entertaining way.
A surprise awaits in this third and, unfortunately, last season in which we will finally find out what happens to these two women and if their little “accident” is uncovered.
Premise
The acerbic widow, Jen, is dead set on tracking down the hit-and-run driver who mowed down her husband. In a grief support group she befriends Judy, the quirky optimist. The story is not quite as Jen had thought, as she will find out thanks to Judy.

Asking a filmmaker to name their favorite movie tends to be a dead-end line of inquiry. Directors don't see their films the same way we do. They can't. They spent months to a year or more piecing the work together. They've seen it in fragments, as a rough assemblage, and in various other incarnations. Some directors don't even watch their movies with an audience. They finish and move on to the next one.
Quentin Tarantino, however, is a different breed. When he's not making a movie, he's watching movies. When he's making a movie, he's watching movies. He is acutely aware of where his movies land in the continuum of film history and loves to pontificate as to how his run measures up to the oeuvres of greats like Howard Hawks and Brian De Palma. So when you ask him to name his favorite movie, you can rest assured that...

The 2022 MTV Video Music Awards are taking place on August 28, so let’s take a look at some of the genre categories to see who’s likely to win one or two moon persons at the end of the month.
Best Pop
As per usual, Best Pop is stacked with hits. However, as big as Ed Sheeran‘s “Shivers” and Lizzo‘s “About Damn Time” are, there’s one hit here that will likely give them a run for their money: Harry Styles‘s “As It Was.” The song is one of two nominated to reach number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 (the other is “About Damn Time”) and is the longest running number-one hit of the year, spending 10 weeks on top. The music video for the song is also acclaimed, and is nominated for a couple technical awards as well. And on top of all of that, Styles’s fan...

Records for nearly a quarter-century and worked with some of music’s all-time biggest names — from Frank Sinatra, Jimi Hendrix and Neil Young to Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell and the Grateful Dead — died overnight in his sleep. He was 95. Warner Records Co-Chairman Tom Corson and Aaron Bay-Schuck announced the news today but gave no other details.
“Mo was one of the greatest record men of all time, and a prime architect of the modern music business,” Corson said in a statement (read it in full below). “For Mo, it was always first and foremost about helping artists realize their vision. One of the pivotal figures in the evolution of Warner Music Group, in the 1960s Mo ushered Warner/Reprise Records into a golden era of revolutionary, culture-shifting artistry. The Flash Season 8 Episode 19
Few things are certain in the world of The Flash and several are downright inexplicable. But one thing is always true: No matter what timeline or time period we’re talking about, The Reverse Flash will do his best to bring down Central City’s hero. Even when Eobard Thawne doesn’t have access to his powers and by all rights should be dead.
The Flash season 8 not only saw Barry Allen save his archenemy’s life in the wake of the Armageddon event but strip him of his speed in the process, leaving him a depowered prisoner in Argus’ high-tech security facility on Lian Yu. And, for most of the season, that seemed to be where the show would leave him, possibly forever. Which is probably why it felt like such a shock to see Deon kill Thawne...

The Rolling Stones’ 60th anniversary tour touched down at Liverpool, England’s Anfield stadium Thursday night, and five songs into the set they honored hometown heroes the Beatles by covering “I Wanna Be Your Man.”
“We had decided to rehearse a special version of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone,'” Mick Jagger told the crowd before playing it. “But we decided instead to do a cover song written by other local lads, so we’ll do this especially for you.”

Apparently, you can teach an old Stones new tricks.
The Rolling Stones started their 60th anniversary European tour by reviving the song “Out of Time,” which they first recorded in 1966 but have never played live.
The song was on the British edition of the Aftermath album. It was later popularized by Chris Farlowe, who released a cover version of it in 1966. Farlowe’s version was produced by Stones frontman Mick Jagger.
The Stones appeared Wednesday at Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid, Spain.

The time has come today for the Rolling Stones to introduce the 1966 song “Out of Time” into their setlist. Improbable as it may seem, given how often the song has been covered by others or licensed for the movies, the band had never performed the tune live until it showed up at the Stones’ European tour opening Wednesday night in Madrid, Spain.
There was a rumor the song might show up, as eavesdroppers on tour rehearsals had heard the Stones trying out “Out of Time,” although there are typically rarities that they test during rehearsal periods that seldom or never make it onto a tour. So its actual appearance at the Metropolitano Stadium opener was considered a blessed event indeed.
Given the enduring popularity of the song among fans, some might assume it was released as a single in ’66, but that wasn’t the case after it first appeared as an “Aftermath” album cut.
