Wilford Brimley, best known for his roles in “The Natural,” the 1982 remake of “The Thing,” “The Firm” and “Cocoon,” died on Saturday. He was 85.
His agent, Lynda Bensky, told The New York Times that he had been sick with a kidney problem for two months.
Brimley was also famous for the series of commercials for Quaker Oats in which he appeared.
Pauline Kael ably summed up his appeal in a few words. Reviewing “Cocoon” for the New Yorker in 1985, she said, “Wilford Brimley, with his walrus mustache and friendly belly, brings an ornery impudence to his role.”
Brimley, who seemed to enter old age several decades ago, appeared perfectly at home in the Ron Howard-directed movie about senior citizens unintentionally rejuvenated by an alien life force in the pool where they do water aerobics even though he was only 51 at the time. Salt Lake City, Dec 1: An American man who was duck hunting on the Great Salt Lake near Brigham City was shot by his dog in the buttocks.
The 46-year-old man from Brigham City and his friend went duck hunting on Sunday about 8:30 a.m. on the north end of the Great Salt Lake near the bird refuge, about 10 miles west of Brigham City when the incident occurred.
According to Box Elder County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Kevin Potter, the two had their canoe-like boat in a shallow marsh area when the man got out of the boat to either set up or collect decoys, and laid his 12-gauge shotgun across the bow of the boat.
After the man got out of the boat, the dog inside the vessel jumped up on the bow and stepped on the gun, which.

I'm still trying to work up to a weekly Theater series (as related to cinema as it can be) as I know that many readers are interested in Broadway, too... but we'll see. It's difficult to branch out onto those invite lists.
To most people the news that Broadway star Will Swenson, who was so sensational as "Berger" in Hair is going to direct a film called "Facing East" about a Mormon family dealing with their gay son's suicide is just regular pre-production movie news. To me it's college nostalgia gone wild. The universe is just refusing to let me live in the present this past month or so. So many things keep throwing me backwards in time. See, Swenson went to Byu in the 90s when I was there and he's the second alum to make me feel completely unproductive. What have I been doing with my life? First there was Aaron Eckhart,...
