Two Danish guys shoot for the stars, by attempting to home-build a craft capable of space travel, on a partially crowdfunded budget six orders of magnitude smaller than Nasa’s, in Max Kestner‘s engaging doc, “Amateurs In Space,” which plays as part of the Transilvania Film Festival‘s documentary sidebar. It’s a film that feels immediately ripe for a narrative feature remake, if only Hollywood can work out which formula to follow: should it be a gentle comedy starring Ben Mendelsohn, that follows the wacky adventures of an odd couple of Danes and their David-and-Goliath story?

Few films have divided movie fans quite like Prometheus, the Alien prequel that answered too much while saying too little. It remains one of the more maddening studio films I’ve ever paid to see in the theater: an impeccably made, stunningly designed, ambitious as hell…misfire? Flawed success? Something in-between? I’m a member of the Prometheus fan club, […]

In many respects sci-fi and action movies once had an easy ride. In the ’50s these genres would fit into the B movie mould, and because of this, little was expected of them as long as they provided cheap thrills. Over the years however, these films and their accompanying audiences have become more sophisticated, with bigger budgets and ever-growing ambitions from film-makers.
Interstellar and Inception make significant claims not only to be entertainment, but to be capable of telling audiences something about the reality in which they live. With this in mind, they subject themselves to higher levels of scrutiny when it comes to scientific accuracy.
Nowadays high-end Hollywood blockbusters often have a team of scientific advisers on the set, or they will at least be involved in the writing process. But at the same time, if a film slaps an “approved by experts” label on itself, and...

No one can hear you scream.... in "Blank Space"!
This remix of Taylor Swift's music video into a trailer for a horror movie is perfect. We'd line up to see this as a feature-length film in a hot minute. Maybe as a triple feature with "Gone Girl" and "Possession," no?
It's actually not too great a leap of imagination to see "Blank Space" as a short horror movie itself, given how many genre devices director Joseph Kahn ("Detention") makes use of. Plus, the whole beautiful bunny-boiler is exactly the sort of stereotype that Swift's playing with as she goes from smitten kitten to raging spurned lover in the blink of an eye.
Thanks to the folks at Slate for making this magic happen!

The Alien franchise has had a hard life in video games. Though a number of the crossover Alien versus Predator titles have been noteworthy, few of the others have. Aliens: Colonial Marines, the most recent title, is quite infamous for how bad it ended up being, and it’s left a bad taste in fan’s mouths. The trouble with these games is that they stick more to the schematic of the later entries in the film series, focusing on a more militaristic Pov. The Creative Assembly has decided to go a different route with their Alien game, back to the ways of Ridley Scott’s original film. Alien: Isolation is a new step in survival horror as it not only is a licensed title but it also takes the setting to outer space.

Cinema history is filled with great taglines. There are classics like "In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream" (Alien) and "The First Casualty Of War Is Innocence" (Platoon), but even smaller movies have featured some great ones, like Clerks ("Just Because They Serve You Doesn't Mean They Like You") and Boogie Nights ("Everyone Has One Special Thing"). The tagline for Alex Cross, the new film from director Rob Cohen starring Tyler Perry, isn't exactly in that league. Imp Awards has delivered the first poster for the upcoming thriller and while the design of the one-sheet is fairly generic (how many times do we need to see a character standing in the shadow of another character?), it's the truly horrible tagline that will really draw your eye. I'm not sure who came up with "Don't Ever Cross Alex Cross," but here's hoping that they're never given that kind of responsibility...

One of the great joys of becoming a responsible adult is being able to walk into a store that sells nothing but candy and soda and spend twenty bucks, just because you have it and you want to with no one can really tell you no. It’s even better to be able to walk into a comic book store with another twenty or maybe fifty and just buy yourself some books that look interesting. Far better even than that is Free Comic Book Day.
Free Comic Book Day has rapidly become my favorite day of the year, because I get to go and pick out comics that I want to try without having to worry about how much I have to spend and whether or not I will like it. All that matters is if it piques my interest and if I think I want to read it. Well,...

When the original Alien came out in 1979 its tagline was the effective and instantly memorable "In Space No One Can Hear Your Scream". When Aliens was released on July 18, 1986, its tagline was "This Time It's War".
But as far apart in evoking a feeling as each film's tagline was, James Cameron cemented his weight as a visual storyteller by creating the world's best action sequel.
Fans of the Alien series try to segregate themselves by asking which movie they prefer, Ridley Scott's Alien or Cameron's militaristic sequel. I say it's like a parent trying to identify which child of theirs they love the most; simply put, you can't do it because each has their own unique qualities that endear themselves to you. The same holds true for Alien and Aliens; the latter may follow the other and use the same characters and creatures but they're two different kinds of...

Okay. We officially have a headache. Is Prometheus an Alien prequel? Is it an entirely different beast altogether? Or is it both? There's certainly a lot of confusion surrounding the Ridley Scott film, and no one on the inside is talking. Although ...
According to Sky Movies, who credit an "exclusive source", the movie will feature an alien designed by H.R. Giger, and even the famed space jockey will be recreated.
"Part of the film will be shot in Morocco," says Sky Movies. "I've heard that some sort of archaeological dig where they discover alien DNA takes place there, and that DNA gives them the coordinates for an alien world. I've also heard Morocco is being used for alien planet landscapes so I'm not sure if it's an archaeological dig on another planet."
Legit? Ramblings? We don't really know, but hey it's a glimmer of hope, no?
Prometheus stars Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender.

Let's face it. Sharing the screen with an actor as talented as Dragon Tattoo's Noomi Rapace is no easy task. She needs a co-star who's not only up to the challenge but has the acting chops to pull it off. Director Ridley Scott has found his choice for just such a co-star.
According to The Hollywood Reporter Michael Fassbender (pictured right; 300, Eden Lake, Jonah Hex, X-Men: First Class) will star opposite Rapace in Prometheus, Fox's sci-fi project that was once an Alien prequel.
Fox will be giving the film a high-profile summer release of June 8th, 2012.

Okay, now this is some news we can celebrate going into the weekend! Not only does the Ridley Scott "Alien prequel" have a title and a star (one we couldn't be more excited about), but we also have a better idea of how it fits into the Alien mythos.
According to Deadline New York Twentieth Century Fox officially announced the new Ridley Scott production as "Prometheus", [and it] is now bound for worldwide release on March 9th, 2012. Of the five major roles to be cast, Noomi Rapace (pictured right) is the first actor signed to star (as "Elizabeth Shaw"), and we hear that Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron are both circling the other big female lead ("Vickers").
The initial draft of the script was written by Jon Spaihts (The Darkest Hour) from Ridley’s idea. Damon Lindelof ("Lost", Star Trek) and Scott have since been working together on the current version which...

Editor’s Note: Normally it’s Landon Palmer hustling your brain through the mental gymnastics of popular culture and film theory, but he’s grading papers or something, so Cole Abaius is taking the reigns to drop kick your mind (instead of completely blowing it). Check back next week for the brilliance if you survive the completely adequate. It’s dark. Not the kind of dark where you strain to make out figures in the near distance or the kind of dark that sends a thrill through you in a movie theater. It’s the kind of darkness that your eyes never adjust to because there’s no light, and there never will be. I’m at the bottom of a cave near the small town of Bustamante, Mexico, and after passing graffiti from the 19th century, my friends and I have all decided to turn off our headlamps before heading into the grand hall. With...

Have you heard of Scarezone? If not, and if you like 80's slasher films then Scarezone will be the right film for you. The film is set within a haunted house attraction "where actors in costumes lunge from the darkness at hapless customers (Nevermore)." Scarezone is already set for a February 19th release at the Nevermore Film Festival and fans might want to check out this film that has been described as "a stylish, terrifying excursion through...make-believe (Nevermore)." A trailer for this project and synopsis are below.
The tagline for Scarezone (very Aliens inspired):
No one can hear you scream… if they're screaming too!
The synopsis for Scarezone:
"Scare Zone is Oliver's pride and joy. Sure, it is just another strip-mall Halloween Horror House, but as always, he has put his heart and soul into it. This year it is "Scare Zone III: the Psyco-Splatter Raw-topsy Slaughter Dungeon...

Is 'Titans Will Clash' a portent of creative bankrupcy to come, or just refreshingly plain speaking?
Unless the 2011 Oscars plan to introduce categories for Best 300 Imitation or Most Bafflingly Highbrow Cast In A Film About Some Giant Scorpions, March's Clash of the Titans remake doesn't look as if it will trouble too many award ceremonies.
But the Clash of the Titans trailer? Different matter entirely. Because if the Clash of the Titans trailer isn't recognised for its sterling contribution to the canon of shriekingly awful movie taglines, then there's simply no justice in the world.
First, let's just put the movie into context. It's a film called Clash of the Titans. In Clash of the Titans, a number of titans take it upon themselves to clash with each other, to presumably spectacular effect. Now, knowing this, what do you think the producers chose to use as the movie's tagline? Remember...

· Should the world be happy about the news that Ridley Scott is attached to direct a prequel to his seminal 1979 classic Alien? Fox announced Thursday that the 71-year-old filmmaker will take on a script commissioned from sci-fi screenwriter du jour Jon Spaihts; no plot has yet been announced, but it's probably safe to presume it will unfold aboard the crashed ship that sent the Nostromo crew its "Beware! Aliens!" distress signal in the first place. And then they die. I mean, wouldn't you much rather have a Blade Runner prequel, with Rutger Hauer's fox fur, Elton John glasses and all that? Seriously, Fox -- it's over. [Variety]

Yes, yes, I stole the line from some other scifi horror film, I’m a bad man. But I can live with that, particularly when its in the interest of something as intriguing as Almaz Black Box. This one appears to be right on the verge of becoming a lost film. The production year is listed as 2007, it appears to be the only thing that writer-director Christian Johnston has ever done, the production company’s listed website is non-existent, and despite some scattered references to it having screened in the Cannes Marche Du Film - the market component of the giant festival - there is nary a single mention of it to be found on the listed sales agent’s web site. When things like this happen it normally means that the backers have gone bankrupt after the film is finished but before it’s paid for - exactly what...
