HONORABLE JONES is not all that different from the usual '70s gay porn features, except it succeeds in injecting a comical plot line with topical references. Once the sex scenes get going, it is as dull as the rest.
Allan Wood is amusing in the title role of an assistant district attorney in Frisco, ordered to harass the gay community or else, as the mayor is heading up a crackdown. He is reluctant but with his job at stake he dutifully visits all-male porno theaters like the Spartan and Nob Hill (latter advertising a showing of Fred Halsted's SEXTOOL, and we see rather strong content screened, including fistiing. In the audience Jones is approached and participates in various sex acts himself.
That's the formula for an hour of deadpan, mechanical gay sex. Despite threats to his livelihood (he has a wife and family to support), Jones never follows through to arrest the manager of any of the theaters, and ends up joining an orgy in the bathroom of one. Picture ends with him happily sitting in the audience with the other patrons, enjoying the porn.
Film has a jazz score, including liberal pirating (as did so many XXX films in this era) of Lee Morgan's hit Blue Note LP "The Sidewinder".
Casting of a milquetoast like Wood makes the film work, even though eventually he is doing the f&s routine like a seasoned pro. I'm sure the filmmakers were on the receiving end of police harassment at the time, so the film's storyline has relevance beyond its tongue-in- cheek premise.
Oddly enough, two years later the movie occasioned an unauthorized remake (read: ripoff of plot line) by mainstream (non-Gay) pornographers resulting in THE TENDER TRAP, also set in San Francisco.
