Fox is developing a drama series about the richest man in the world having to flee his private island after a global financial collapse.

Billionaire Apocalypse (w/t) comes from The Morning Show creator Jay Carson, who will write, and exec producers including Hugh Jackman, Pulp Fiction producer Lawrence Bender and Kevin Brown, exec producer of Starz’ Flesh and Bone.

The network is unveiling the project at Mipcom, where it is hunting for international partners.

Fox Entertainment Studios is producing and it will be distributed internationally by Fox Entertainment Global.

The series follows the richest man on the planet, 200 of his employees, and his family as they are forced to flee to his private island in the wake of a global financial collapse, where the employees and family members — who he’s treated as afterthoughts for decades — quickly realize he’s no longer rich and thus no longer in charge.

Fox said late Sunday night that it is developing a drama series tentatively titled Billionaire Apocalypse that hails from The Morning Show creator Jay Carson and counts Hugh Jackman among its executive producers.

The drama, from Fox Entertainment Studios for the Fox network, is written and executive produced by Carson, creator and writer of Apple+’s Emmy-nominated Morning Show. Also serving as exec producers are Lawrence Bender (Flesh and Bone, Pulp Fiction) and Kevin Brown (Flesh and Bone, Trumbo).

The logline for the drama: “The richest man on the planet, 200 of his employees, and his family are forced to flee to his private island in the wake of a global financial collapse, where the employees and family members — who he’s treated as afterthoughts for decades — quickly realize he’s no longer rich and thus no longer in charge.”

The project, which has received a script commitment, is being distributed worldwide by Fox Entertainment Global.

Katee Sackhoff wants to join Star Trek, and she should to complete her perfect sci-fi hat trick. Sackhoff became a sci-fi icon when she was cast as Kara "Starbuck" Thrace in Sci-Fi Channel's 2003 reboot of Battlestar Galactica, which was created by legendary Star Trek writer Ronald D. Moore. In 2012, Katee jumped the galaxy far, far away when she voiced Bo-Katan Kryze in Star Wars: The Clone Wars before embodying Bo-Katan in live-action in The Mandalorian season 2. Incredibly, Sackhoff has not been in Star Trek... yet.

Since Star Trek's rebirth on Paramount+, the various Star Trek series have scored multiple casting coups, starting with Jason Isaacs and Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh headlining Star Trek: Discovery season 1. Michelle Hurd and Allison Pill joined the cast of Star Trek: Picard while Jack Quaid became one of the leads of Star Trek: Lower Decks, and even played Ensign Brad Boimler in live-action on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

We have our first new cast addition for the highly anticipated Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2, and it's none other than Amber Midthunder, who many may recognize from her starring role as Naru in the sci-fi film Prey.

According to Variety, she joins the season 2 cast of the Apple TV+ series, playing a character named Isabel. Isabel is described as an "intelligent and powerful businesswoman." Her role in the second season is said to be a "heavily" recurring role. Unfortunately, that's all that was revealed about her character so far. TV’s production cycle just ain’t what it used to be, and creator Jason Katims is feeling nostalgic.

You can’t blame him: When Katims spoke with Variety recently, the topic was the 25th anniversary of his teen drama “Roswell,” which had been intended for Fox but ended up on The CW predecessor The WB.

Katims waxed poetic about the days when May’s TV upfronts actually mattered.

“Back in those days, it was this mad scramble where things could change drastically in a matter of hours,” Katims said. “At the time, I thought this was such an absurd system. Now I long for it, because you knew right then whether your show was going to go ahead, and you had to immediately get into production to get it on the air and put something in those time slots.”

In July 1947, there were multiple reports of a potential UFO sighting, but it did not become a worldwide phenomenon until the 1980s when Major Jesse Marcel, the man who took responsibility for the recovered debris, decided to reveal the truth about the incident. The show initially covered the Roswell incident in the original Unsolved Mysteries, but there have been significant updates in the last 35 years, prompting additional coverage of the sensational case.

After Danny Cron graduated from the California Institute of Arts in 2018, he did exactly what his instructors at the Valencia school recommended: he booked showcases in hopes of finding his first big acting gig.

Fox has found its main cast for the upcoming drama series “Rescue: Hi Surf,” Variety has learned.

The show was originally greenlit at Fox in April 2023. The series regulars will include: Robbie Magasiva, Arielle Kebbel, Adam Demos, Kekoa Kekumano, Alex Aiono, and Zoe Cipres. In addition, Sea Shimooka will appear in a recurring role.

Harry Johnson, an actor who appeared on dozens of shows throughout his 40-year career, including Battlestar Galactica, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Law & Order, has died. He was 81.

Johnson died Tuesday, his rep Jonathan Erickson confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. The cause of death is unknown at this time.

“It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Atb Talent client Harry Johnson,” Atb Talent Agency shared in a statement. “With a career spanning over 40 years, Harry was a true talent and cherished member of the community. His impact on the entertainment industry will be remembered and celebrated. Johnson’s passing was confirmed by his wife, Christiane, who told Deadline he died on Tuesday, January 2, in Los Angeles, just six days after his 81st birthday. Three-time Emmy winner David Nutter is set receive the Director Guild’s 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Achievement in Television Direction.

The award will be presented February 10 during the 76th annual DGA Awards at the Beverly Hilton.

Working across a wide variety of genres from sci-fi to drama to crime procedurals, Nutter has directed two dozen pilots, 21 of which were picked up to series and were responsible for more than 1,550 episodes of television. He won two Emmys for HBO’s Game of Thrones — one for directing in 2015 and the other for Outstanding Drama Series in 2019 — and another for directing the premium cabler’s 2010 miniseries Band of Brothers

He also won the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Dramatic Series for “Mother’s Mercy,” Season 5 finale of Game of Thrones. He has received six other DGA nominations since 2006 for episodes of The Sopranos, Entourage, limited series The Pacific and three for Game of Thrones.

Veteran TV director David Nutter has been selected to receive the Directors Guild of America’s lifetime achievement award for distinguished achievement in directing. He will receive the honors at the 76th Annual DGA Awards ceremony on Saturday, February 10, 2024.

Nutter is only the sixth director to receive the recognition, following James Burrows, Robert Butler, Joe Pytka, Don Mischer and Robert A. Fishman.

“David has had a truly phenomenal directing career on so many of the most high-profile series in episodic television,” said DGA president Lesli Linka Glatter. “To quote the cover of our own DGA Quarterly, David is truly the ‘King of the Pilots.’ His passion, creativity, and mastery of the craft over his expansive career underscores exactly why David serves as an inspiration to fellow directors everywhere. The CW is bringing even more live sports onto the network. The network was put on the market in early 2022 after its parent company alleged that it had never made a profit since its creation. Per The Hollywood Reporter, The CW recently inked a four-year deal to air live basketball and football games from the Atlantic Coast Conference (Acc).
