Another morsel of comic book movie news arrives today from the scoopster supreme at Latino Review, El Mayimbe. His latest tidbit of insider intel isn’t connected to Warner Bros.’ DC movie-verse or Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, but Fox’s X-Men Universe. According to his knowledge, Channing Tatum has been courting a list of “big” name directors to helm his upcoming X-spinoff, Gambit.
Free Twitter Scoop! Channing Tatum going after Big names to direct Gambit. He approached Bennett Miller & Darren Aronofsky who both passed.
— Umberto Gonzalez (@elmayimbe) April 16, 2015
Tatum landed the leading role on the long-awaited movie back in October 2014 and has since boarded as a producer, which goes some way to explaining why he’s so proactive in seeking out the perfect director. As El Mayimbe outlines in his short-but-sweet Tweet, Tatum has already approached Foxcatcher‘s Bennett Miller And Requiem For A Dream‘s Darren Aronofsky, but alas they both declined the gig.

20th Century Fox wants the world to know that they’ve not forgotten about card-trickster, Gambit. They might not be announcing a nine-film plan with crossovers more tangled than a box of Christmas lights, but they’ve officially revealed that Channing Tatum will lead the X-Men spinoff with Josh Zetumer onboard to pen the first draft.
Tatum’s name has been linked to Gambit for some time now, as the actor first showed interest in the role over a year ago. While today verifies his involvement, he spoke out earlier this month on the direction the story will take, implying it will be a unique origin story.
Now we’ve learned who will be tasked with bringing that tale to light, as Fox has hired RoboCop scribe Josh Zetumer to pen the screenplay. With only one feature to his name, Zetumer might be considered a risky move, but it seems...

Mark counts down 15 great episodes of The Simpsons from its often-overlooked past 15 years...
Last week, we counted down our list of the top 50 episodes of The Simpsons ever made. It's a tough list to make, picking out less than 10 percent of the 552 episodes broadcast to date, to select the very best of the best. This is despite the off-hand consensus of some viewers that the series has been total rubbish since season 10.
We don't hold much truck with this assumption. The Simpsons is an institution and to suggest that more than half of it is garbage is more than a bit reductive. Admittedly, there's much to support the argument that few episodes produced in the twenty-first century can quite stand up to the genius of the earlier canon, but anything would suffer in comparison to that golden age of the show.
If you're one of the people who stopped watching the series after the nineties,...

The New York Asian Film Festival has announced that its tenth anniversary edition will open on July 1 with the North American premiere of Yoshimasa Ishibashi's Milocrorze: A Love Story ("one solid slab of psychedelia," promises the festival; image above) and close on July 14 with the New York premiere of Na Hong-Jin's The Yellow Sea (aka The Murderer), which has just screened at Cannes in Un Certain Regard (see the roundup).
There'll be two Centerpiece Presentations, Benny Chan's Shaolin, with Andy Lau, Nic Tse and Jackie Chan, and Takashi Miike's Ninja Kids!!! — which, you may remember Danny Kasman caught in Cannes, and got quite a nice kick out of it, too. The festival will also be screening Miike's "director's cut" of 13 Assassins.
There'll be three special focuses. First off...
Wu Xia: Hong Kong's Flying Swordsmen
Tsui Hark's Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame...

The Tribeca Film Festival has the stars. The New York Film Festival has the award winners. But the New York Asian Film Festival has the coolest, boldest, and strangest genre movies, and that's why it holds a special place in my heart. While most festivals specialize in quote-unquote arthouse fare, Nyaff brings the Asian mainstream -- the stuff that would almost never play here otherwise -- to America.
We're big fans of the Nyaff at IFC and we're looking forward to another excellent edition this year. The lineup was just announced and it looks stacked. It includes a few superb films I saw at last year's Fantastic Fest, including the entertaining exploitation documentary "Machete Maidens Unleashed" from "Not Quite Hollywood" director Mark Hartley. The stuff I'm jazzed to see for the first time includes the world premiere of Takashi Miike's "Ninja Kids!!!" (their exclamation points, not mine), "Ocean Heaven,...

Welcome back for another edition of News Bits. What is it you ask? The film world can get quite overwhelming at times in the news that releases. Unfortunately some of this news is just too small to warrant a full article. Rather than deprive you of the news, we've created this section. This week we see a little bit of everything. From posters, in depth looks, and even fan dedication; you'll find it all here.
* A new poster for Scream 4 has appeared on line and it shows Ghost Face getting to the point...Sorry, couldn't help myself.
More The Amazing Spider-Man Videos
* IGN has proven they are incredibly nerdy, by posting this in depth analysis of the new Spider-Man suit. Definitely worth a watch for fans of the web-slinger.
* Stan Lee, the creator of Spider-Man (and many other heroes) was talking with Washington Post, and went on to explain...

Starting tomorrow, September 1, the first movies from the new Netflix/Epix deal will begin to appear as Watch It Now selections. As I mentioned in my earlier, Robocop-heavy blog, Epix is a subsidiary of Viacom and has the rights to the libraries of MGM, Paramount, and Lionsgate films. The first films of note to come to Watch It Now as a part of this deal are Iron Man and Star Trek. Now, the original Star Trek movies, starring your favorite elderly people reprising their roles from the television series, have been available for a while now.
The Star Trek coming tomorrow is the 2009 J.J. Abrams film most remembered for starring that one guy from Heroes. Maybe that isn't fair to say, but in my mind that's where the new Star Trek is filed. It's in there because I've actually never seen it. I should mention that I live on...
