Science fiction stories are built upon mankind’s inherent curiosity over the unknown, but other than that there’s nothing that’s off the table. Terence Davies, the accomplished and thoughtful director behind such films as Distant Voices, Still Lives, The House Of Mirth and, most recently, Benediction, about World War II poet Siegfried Sassoon, had died. The actual history being explored in Giorgio Diritti’s three-hour drama Lubo is fascinating, and on paper would promise to be an exceptionally agonizing and important recuperation of victimization in Switzerland during WWII (especially as it’s balanced on the shoulders of Franz Rogowski). Unfortunately, Diritti’s penchant for old fashioned storytelling drifts a bit languorously across a twenty year time period in Mario Cavatore and Freda Valla’s somewhat standard script. As a member of the nomadic Jenisch population in 1939, Grisons, Rogowski excels as a father hopelessly searching for his abducted children, relocated by officials set on exterminating his people through sinister eugenics programs while the Nazis’ rampage billows hatred across the border.…...

Abortion rights took center stage at a rally Tuesday for striking film and television writers, who gathered with their supporters outside the New York City headquarters of Amazon on the first day of the retail and streaming giant’s “Prime Day” summer sale.

Linking abortion rights to labor rights, speakers said that film and TV workers in anti-abortion states are less protected today from pregnancy-related health emergencies than they were before the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe v Wade last summer. That ruling turned abortion rights and restrictions into a state-by-state patchwork after the high court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

They also said production companies such as Amazon — which reimburses employee travel expenses for medical procedures including abortions — could be more vocal in their support of women’s reproductive freedom and medical care.

What horror movie comes to mind when you think of children? It is probably Stephen King’s Children of the Corn or something similar to The Exorcist, where they are evil or possessed. Or maybe what pops into your brain first is Insidious or Paranormal Activity when they are in danger and being manipulated by some unseen entity. The bottom line is that children have been in horror movies since the genre first started. Even now, in 2023, children appear in more horror films than ever.

When the genre was first picked up in the movie industry, children in horror films were mostly siding characters or in the position of a person in distress. As the genre evolves, so do the roles children play. Modern horror still depicts children as two tropes: innocent and curious or evil and creepy. Still, they have more character development in today’s horror than when the genre first started.

Copenhagen’s Cph Pix festival, now in its new autumn dates, has revealed a record 226 feature films in its lineup.

The 14-day festival (Oct 27 - Nov 9), which now also includes kids and family festival Buster, will show 46 features for young people in its daytime programmes and 180 films for teenagers and adults in the evenings.

As previously reported, the eighth edition of festival will open with a gala premiere of Marvel’s Doctor Strange (Mads Mikkelsen will attend).

The two actors made a Super Bowl bet that the loser would visit a children's hospital in the winning team's city. And while Pratt, the Seattle Seahawks fan, lost the bet and already stopped a Boston hospital, the duo decided to extend the goodwill to Seattle, as well.

Yellow school buses dominated 53rd Street Dec. 5, when 3,200 children visited the Broadway Theatre to go behind the scenes at “Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella.” Hosted by Inside Broadway, an organization that has been introducing New York City public school children to theater for 32 years, the event showed the students all aspects of what it takes to make a Broadway show. Cast members Laura Osnes, Rebecca Luker, and Andy Jones sang songs, while the production stage manager Ira Mont spoke to people from the properties, lighting, and sound departments to convey the technical aspects as well. “If I had been able to do something like this as a child, it would have been incredible,” says Luker, who received the organization’s Broadway Beacon Award in 2007. “We’re teaching children at a very young age to love theater and appreciate every aspect of it. The Academy's Short Films and Feature Animation Branch Reviewing Committee viewed all 56 eligible entries for the preliminary round of voting at screenings held in New York and Los Angeles and now the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch members will select three to five nominees from among the 10 titles previewed below. In what can only be described as an inspired bit of counter-programming, the Guardian brings you the second in our series of British cult classics double bills, in conjuction with the BFI. The absolute acme of 1980s British auteurist cinema, Distant Voices, Still Lives and A Zed & Two Noughts couldn't be more different to the current breed of blockbuster: both intensely personal, inward-looking, and defiantly unconventional.

That's not to say these two films run on similar tracks; they themselves are practically polar opposites. Distant Voices was the 1988 feature debut of Terence Davies, the intensely neurotic Liverpudlian who would go on to make The House of Mirth and The Deep Blue Sea. Davies had already acquired...

Mahler's Symphony No. 3 in D minor is his longest, a six-movement ode to Nature and the World. It includes a children's choir and a contralto soloist but is largely instrumental, using a quite large orchestra complete with posthorn, harps, English horn, bass clarinet, contrabassoon, bass trombones, and a lot more brass than usual. Mahler's nature is not exclusively a calm pastoral scene -- it's stormy, uneasy, sometimes threatening, with mysterious rustling and twittering, yet with rays of sunlight cutting through the shadows at times.

This work had a long and confusing path from conception to completion. Mahler wrote movements II through VI in the summer of 1895. The following year, he worked on a first movement, weaving in elements of the movements he’d written in '95. That movement kept growing and growing -- at least a half an hour long, by itself it as long as all of Beethoven's First Symphony.
