There are endless possibilities when it comes to science fiction and it’s become one of the most versatile storytelling genres. Sci-fi covers such a wide, diverse range that can cover anything from silly buddy comedies with aliens, heartbreaking meditations on loneliness through the eyes of a robot, or global battles against unknown alternate dimensions.
Science fiction stories are built upon mankind’s inherent curiosity over the unknown, but other than that there’s nothing that’s off the table. Sci-fi’s eclectic extremes also mean that there are certain films that technically qualify as science fiction, but they’re actually better examples of other genres.

The Children of the Vault, a group of superhumans, have evolved through time dilation in the Vault and are now incredibly powerful, with Perro rivaling the Hulk in strength. The Children of the Vault's mission is to usher in a new era of humans by exterminating everyone on the planet, and they are rebranding themselves as heroes to gain trust. In X-Men #16, Perro demonstrates his incredible strength by throwing a punch comparable to the Hulk's, surpassing Colossus's strength and potentially even matching the Hulk's level of power.
Since first joining the team, Colossus has always been the X-Men’s resident powerhouse, playing the same conceptual role on the team the Hulk does on the Avengers. But now, there’s a new crop of superhumans on the rise, and one of them actually rivals the Hulk himself. In other words - sorry Colossus, there’s a new Hulk-strength hero in town:...

Key takeaways: Marvel's Children of the Vault #4 teases a major event called the Beyonder/Phoenix War that will rival the Infinity Saga in scope. Cable and Bishop compare weapons during their battle with the Children of the Vault, mentioning the rare P832 Zero-Point Plasma Cannon from the Beyonder/Phoenix War. The power of the Beyonders and the Phoenix Force far surpasses Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet, making the Beyonder/Phoenix War potentially the most destructive event in Marvel's history.
Warning: contains spoilers for Children of the Vault #4!
Marvel’s new Beyonder/Phoenix War makes the MCU’s Infinity Saga look weak in comparison. Terence Davies, the accomplished and thoughtful director behind such films as Distant Voices, Still Lives, The House Of Mirth and, most recently, Benediction, about World War II poet Siegfried Sassoon, had died. Davies, who began his career making autobiographical short films but switched to literary adaptations and dramas, which nevertheless kept an emotionally affecting through line. Dying at home after a short illness, Davies was 77.
Born in Liverpool to a large Catholic family (which informed much of his early film work), Davies spent a decade as a clerk before attending Coventry Drama School, and starting to make short films. He followed that up with the National Film School. His three initial shorts are Children, Madonna And Child and Death And Transfiguration all tackled autobiographical stories of emotion and religion.

Director Fritz Kiersch scared Linda Hamilton on the set of Children of the Corn by surprising her with a real child actor in a key scene. Despite the scare, Hamilton considers Children of the Corn her worst movie and worried it would harm her acting career. Many of the special effects in the film were cut due to budget restrictions, which disappointed Hamilton and affected her faith in the film's success.
One scene in Children Of The Corn legitimately scared Linda Hamilton during filming. A slasher-horror based on the Stephen King short story of the same name, the 1984 film featured The Terminator star in the co-lead role of Vicky Baxter. While the movie is not necessarily viewed as one of the strongest horror adaptations, it's cult following, multiple sequels, remake, and reboot suggest there's something thrilling about the story and setting that's worth keeping alive.

Children of a Lesser God: Diritti Highlights Swiss War Crimes in Prolonged Drama
The actual history being explored in Giorgio Diritti’s three-hour drama Lubo is fascinating, and on paper would promise to be an exceptionally agonizing and important recuperation of victimization in Switzerland during WWII (especially as it’s balanced on the shoulders of Franz Rogowski). Unfortunately, Diritti’s penchant for old fashioned storytelling drifts a bit languorously across a twenty year time period in Mario Cavatore and Freda Valla’s somewhat standard script. As a member of the nomadic Jenisch population in 1939, Grisons, Rogowski excels as a father hopelessly searching for his abducted children, relocated by officials set on exterminating his people through sinister eugenics programs while the Nazis’ rampage billows hatred across the border.…...

For around half of the entire last century, there was a semi-official policy enacted by the Swiss state to forcibly separate the children of “itinerant” parents from their families. The program, known as “Kinder der Landstrasse” (“Children of the Road”), was ostensibly designed for the protection of such children from the perils of vagrancy and criminality which the state imagined rife among the traveller population. In retrospect, of course, the practise, which was discontinued in the 1970s, has been revealed for what it actually was: an unjustifiably cruel abrogation of the human rights of various minority populations, among them the Yenish, the group to which Franz Rogowski’s Lubo Moser, the focus of Giorgio Diritti’s sprawling, overlong “Lubo,” belongs. Nobody could deny that such a historical injustice merits a moving and epic cinematic investigation. It’s just a shame that while the three-hour-long “Lubo” probably contains that very film,...

Horror novels have a long history of being adapted into both brilliant and embarrassingly bad films, with Stephen King's works being no exception. Many successful horror novels, such as The Body Snatchers and The Haunting of Hill House, have been poorly adapted, disappointing fans and deviating from the source material. Films like Dreamcatcher, Pet Sematary, and Children of the Corn have received lackluster adaptations that failed to capture the terror and depth of the original novels.
For decades, great horror books have undergone some terrible film adaptations. From urban legends to true-crime books to bestselling novels, literature has influenced horror cinema since its silent, black-and-white origins. This longstanding relationship has blessed cinephiles with Gothic classics like Frankenstein and Dracula, cerebral thrillers like The Silence of the Lambs and Psycho, and a multitude of Stephen King adaptations like The Shining and Misery. Abortion rights took center stage at a rally Tuesday for striking film and television writers, who gathered with their supporters outside the New York City headquarters of Amazon on the first day of the retail and streaming giant’s “Prime Day” summer sale.
Linking abortion rights to labor rights, speakers said that film and TV workers in anti-abortion states are less protected today from pregnancy-related health emergencies than they were before the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe v Wade last summer. That ruling turned abortion rights and restrictions into a state-by-state patchwork after the high court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
They also said production companies such as Amazon — which reimburses employee travel expenses for medical procedures including abortions — could be more vocal in their support of women’s reproductive freedom and medical care.

What horror movie comes to mind when you think of children? It is probably Stephen King’s Children of the Corn or something similar to The Exorcist, where they are evil or possessed. Or maybe what pops into your brain first is Insidious or Paranormal Activity when they are in danger and being manipulated by some unseen entity. The bottom line is that children have been in horror movies since the genre first started. Even now, in 2023, children appear in more horror films than ever.
When the genre was first picked up in the movie industry, children in horror films were mostly siding characters or in the position of a person in distress. As the genre evolves, so do the roles children play. Modern horror still depicts children as two tropes: innocent and curious or evil and creepy. Still, they have more character development in today’s horror than when the genre first started.

From Turning Red to Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, some of the greatest movies of the 21st century bombed at the box office. Whether poor box office results are due to unclear marketing, a bad release date, or a global pandemic, some cult classics and widely celebrated films fail to find an audience in theaters. These 30 films are prime examples that the box office isn’t the final judge of what makes a great film, and sometimes a good movie takes decades to discover.
As theaters and streaming services fight for the primary platform for movie releases, some terrific movies may lose recognition in one format yet gain an audience in the other. This list compiles 30 films from 2000 onward that had disappointing box office results or failed to meet their production and marketing costs. Movies like Children of Men and Idiocracy prove that box office revenue does not reflect a film’s greatness.

The current roster of Marvel performers are no different in that regard, as Chris Hemsworth’s role as Thor has overshadowed everything he’s done, and Ruffalo is now associated with The Hulk more than any other role of his career.

The kids were beyond excited to meet Captain America and Star-Lord. #TwitterBowl pic.twitter.com/SSkdJk3pwW . Seattle Children's (@seattlechildren) March 8, 2015 For those who aren't up on the now-infamous Star-Lord/Peter Quill and Captain America/Steve Rogers bet, this is how it all got started. Captain America says he met some true super heroes.
Chris Evans and Chris Pratt brought some happiness to Seattle Children's Hospital.
The two actors made a Super Bowl bet that the loser would visit a children's hospital in the winning team's city. And while Pratt, the Seattle Seahawks fan, lost the bet and already stopped a Boston hospital, the duo decided to extend the goodwill to Seattle, as well.

The visit wouldn't be complete without a real superhero so Evans was sure to break out his Captain America gear. Don’t worry, the Marvel actors also gave action figures too.

Chris Evans may have won his Super Bowl bet against Chris Pratt, but that didn't stop him from showing good sportsmanship. Instead of betting money on the Feb. 1 game, the two superheroes decided to wager charity visits dressed up as their Marvel superheroes. Even though Evans, who rooted for the New England Patriots, won the bet, he decided to drop by Pratt's charity of choice, Seattle Children's Hospital on Saturday. The day was filled with smiles and laughter as Evans, who was dressed up as Captain America, handed out toys to the children who were being treated at the hospital.

Chris Pratt and Chris Evans brought cheer to the Seattle Children's Hospital on Saturday. The pals had fun with kids at the center, flexing their muscles with a boy set to receive a transplant and doting on two girls holding figurines inspired by Star-Lord, Pratt's Guardians of the Galaxy character. Meanwhile, Evans looked like he walked straight off the set of Captain America, wearing his Marvel character's costume. One mom was especially touched by the gestures, as she shared pictures of the guys on Twitter. "Huge thanks for making Colton's Day!" she wrote. Their cute visit is the result of an awesome Super Bowl bet the guys made in January. In a Twitter conversation that made headlines, Pratt told Evans that, should the Seahawks win the big game, "you fly yourself to Seattle, visit @seattlechildren hospital as Captain America, waving the 12th man flag." Evans accepted the bet, adding, "And...

Chris Evans may have won his highly publicized Super Bowl bet with Chris Pratt last month, but that doesn't mean he's above dressing up as his Marvel character for a good cause. On Saturday, Evans — a New England Patriots fan — made good on his promise to don his Captain America duds for a visit to Seattle Children's Hospital with Guardians of the Galaxy star Pratt. The visit stems from their bet that the person whose favorite team lost in the big NFL game would appear in character at a charity of the other's choosing. Read More

Chris Pratt made good on his Super Bowl bet with fellow Marvel superhero Chris Evans when he stopped by Christopher's Haven in Boston on Friday to visit with sick children. If you need a refresher, Star-Lord (Pratt) and Captain America (Evans), bet each other that their favored football team would take home the big win at the Super Bowl on Sunday. (Pratt, 35, was rooting for the Seattle Seahawks and Evans, 33, was cheering on his hometown team, the New England Patriots.) Instead of betting money, the pair each agreed to visit a children's charity of the other superhero's choice if they lost their bet.

We’re still recuperating from the madness of last night’s Super Bowl Xlix. Whether you’re worshiping your Tom Brady shrine or pulling a Marshawn Lynch and stiff-arming the cameras, you should be rooting for real-life superheros Chris Pratt and Chris Evans. The two are fans of opposing teams, yet used the event as a platform to help causes much bigger than football.

Yellow school buses dominated 53rd Street Dec. 5, when 3,200 children visited the Broadway Theatre to go behind the scenes at “Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella.” Hosted by Inside Broadway, an organization that has been introducing New York City public school children to theater for 32 years, the event showed the students all aspects of what it takes to make a Broadway show. Cast members Laura Osnes, Rebecca Luker, and Andy Jones sang songs, while the production stage manager Ira Mont spoke to people from the properties, lighting, and sound departments to convey the technical aspects as well. “If I had been able to do something like this as a child, it would have been incredible,” says Luker, who received the organization’s Broadway Beacon Award in 2007. “We’re teaching children at a very young age to love theater and appreciate every aspect of it. It’s going to keep theater alive.” While the...

Mahler's Symphony No. 3 in D minor is his longest, a six-movement ode to Nature and the World. It includes a children's choir and a contralto soloist but is largely instrumental, using a quite large orchestra complete with posthorn, harps, English horn, bass clarinet, contrabassoon, bass trombones, and a lot more brass than usual. Mahler's nature is not exclusively a calm pastoral scene -- it's stormy, uneasy, sometimes threatening, with mysterious rustling and twittering, yet with rays of sunlight cutting through the shadows at times.
This work had a long and confusing path from conception to completion. Mahler wrote movements II through VI in the summer of 1895. The following year, he worked on a first movement, weaving in elements of the movements he’d written in '95. That movement kept growing and growing -- at least a half an hour long, by itself it as long as all of Beethoven's First Symphony.

The premiere of Madonna's video for "Give Me All Your Luvin,'" the first single off her new album M.D.N.A., is today, children. It's bound to be a little over-the-top and nutty, like the deranged song itself, and I assume it's not going to live up to the greatest stuff in Madonna's catalog. Then I remember: What does live up to the best stuff in Madonna's catalog? Turns out, not much. Madonna's repertoire is a varied and thundering collection of self-empowering pop ditties, soulful ballads, and kooky little anomalies. And they're mostly all irreplaceable.
