From his jail cell at Rikers Island on Sunday, Harvey Weinstein insisted that the dancing scene in “Down to You” that made Julia Stiles feel “slimy” made 2000 rom-com better.
Weinstein, who produced the film, said that having Stiles’ character dance around a pool table was to “enhance the film’s appeal.”
“I felt so slimy doing it the whole time,” Stiles told Brett Goldstein on his “Films to Be Buried With” podcast last week while discussing her experience making the film. “It was annoying. Because I was like, ‘Well, this is so cheap, and it’s not adding to the story.’”
In a statement shared to media via his spokesperson, Weinstein said, “Julia Stiles is a talented and charismatic actress who naturally connects with audiences. Beyond her acting skills, she’s also a fantastic dancer, which was something fans really wanted at the time.”

Julia Stiles has spoken about her experience working on Down to You and how Harvey Weinstein’s involvement altered the film. During an appearance on the Films To Be Buried With podcast, Stiles described how reshoots pushed by Weinstein forced her into a dance scene that she felt was unnecessary.
“It was a time when teen rom-coms were really popular,” Stiles said. “The director [Kris Isacsson] wrote the script. He was a first-time director and a very, very intelligent, capable guy. The script was very good. And then Harvey Weinstein got his hands on it and decided to capitalize on this trend. And it just became dumb.”
The actress recalled being told that, due to the success of Save the Last Dance and 10 Things I Hate About You, Weinstein wanted her to perform a dance sequence. “They’re pouring money at it in stupid ways,” she said. “So when we went and did reshoots,...

Julia Stiles is recalling working with Harvey Weinstein on a movie she says was “executed very poorly.”
The actress appeared on a recent episode of the Films To Be Buried with Brett Goldstein podcast, where she opened up about feeling “so slimy” during reshoots for her 2000 teen rom-com Down to You.

Now that the cat’s been out of the bag for a good while, it seems everyone has there own Harvey Weinstein story to share. Thankfully Julia Stiles’ personal anecdote regarding the convicted sex offender isn’t as bad as others, but nonetheless speaks to the former producer’s bad taste in all situations.
During a recent interview on Brett Goldstein‘s “Films to Be Buried With” podcast, Stiles discussed her early 2000s heyday, when she had her pick of any teen rom-com being put one the market, but fell into one project that was “executed very poorly.” The film was called “Down to You” and co-starred another hot actor of the moment, Freddie Prinze Jr.

When you think back to cinema in the 1990s, there's a lot that the decade had to offer. There were some groundbreaking horror movies, a plethora of action classics, and, of course, a ton of romantic comedies that focused on young adults finding themselves, and each other. Two of the big stars to come out of the decade were undoubtedly Julia Stiles and Freddie Prinze Jr., who were paired together in the year 2000 for the film Down to You, which Stiles now says was completely ruined by disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein.
Appearing on Brett Goldstein's Films to Be Buried With podcast, Stiles spoke about her time on the set of Down to You, which was directed by Kris Isacsson and starred her and Prinze Jr. as young lovers who meet in college and go through the ups and downs of a relationship. She called the script – which Isacsson also wrote – "very good,...

Julia Stiles has opened up about feeling "slimy" while filming a 2000's rom-com movie. She blamed Harvey Weinstein for ruining her experience with his changes to its original screenplay.
As reported by Variety, Stiles appeared on Brett Goldstein's Films To Be Buried With podcast, and she talked about performing a dance scene in the romantic comedy Down to You, where starred opposite Freddie Prinze Jr.Stiles praised the film's original script and Prinze as a "lovely, wonderful actor" but didn't have such kind words for Harvey Weinstein, the head of Miramax who ordered extensive post-production changes to the director's original cut of the film.

"[The script was] very good," Stiles remarked. "Then Harvey Weinstein got his hands on it and decided to capitalize on this trend… and it just became dumb." She was referring to the early 2000s teen romantic comedy boom, which led to her own rise to fame as well as Prinze's.

Julia Stiles appeared on Brett Goldstein’s “Films to Be Buried With” podcast and remembered feeling “slimy” when she was forced to perform a dance scene in the 2000 rom-com “Down to You” after Harvey Weinstein took control of the production. Stiles said Weinstein ruined the movie.
“Down to You” paired Stiles with Freddie Prinze Jr. in the story of two college students who fall for each other and have an up-and-down romance. The movie was made during the teen rom-com boom, when both actors became icons of the year prior thanks to the hits “She’s All That” and “10 Things I Hate About You.” Stiles called Prinze a “lovely, wonderful actor” and said the “Down to You” script was “very good. After a fall-off in popularity (and quality) throughout much of the 1990s, teen-skewing comedies were suddenly all the rage in Hollywood again at the turn of the millennium. The "Pygmalion"-inspired "She's All That" kicked off the craze, which included such highs as "10 Things I Hate About You" and "Dick," and more lows than I care to remember. These films were quite clearly the offspring of John Hughes' 1980s classics, but they could rarely come close to the mix of insouciance and sentimentality that made his films snap. They also weren't very funny, which didn't help.

Julia Stiles' Shakespeare movie adaptations boosted her fame and made a mark in her career. "Hamlet" (2000) is the worst of Stiles' adaptations, lacking originality and receiving mixed reviews. "10 Things I Hate About You" (1999) is Stiles' best Shakespeare adaptation, a beloved rom-com with a talented cast.
From 1999 to 2001, Julia Stiles appeared in three movies, all of which were modern Shakespeare retellings, so of course, it is only natural to rank these films from worst to best. Julia Stiles is an actress whose career began in 1996 when she played a small role in the film I Love You, I Love You Not. Stiles' first leading role came in 1998 with the thriller, Wicked. However, it was Stiles' prominence in teen romance and comedy movies that boosted her to fame, including Down To You and Save the Last Dance. Since then, Julia Stiles' movies have continued to make their mark.

Freddie Prinze Jr.'s career peaked in the late '90s and early 2000s with high-profile romantic comedies like "She's All That," but his subsequent films flopped at the box office. Prinze Jr. took a break from acting to prioritize his role as a father and has appeared on screen less since 2008. While only dabbling in a film career, Prinze Jr. has remained involved in the entertainment industry through voice acting, WWE, and creating content for his YouTube channel and podcasts.
Freddie Prinze Jr. was a teen heartthrob and winner of multiple Teen Choice Awards, but he has spent much less time in the limelight in recent years. Son of Freddie Prinze Sr., star of the '70s NBC sitcom Chico and the Man, it seemed that acting was in Prinze Jr.'s blood. His breakthrough in I Know What You Did Last Summer set him on a decade-long high in Hollywood.

10 Things I Hate About Julia Stiles
I hate that her idgaf attitude was not present in more 90s teen rom coms.
I hate that I totally forgot about the movie Save The Last Dance.
I hate that she doesn’t get the respect she deserves.
I hate that I thought she was in that movie Swimfan.
I hate that she got stuck doing generic rom coms.
I hate that her character in the Jason Bourne franchise never got a spin-off.
I hate that I really haven’t seen much of her later work.
I hate that she tricked me into liking Shakespeare as a teen.
But most of all, I hate the way I don’t hate her – not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all. Oh, and I hate that I don’t know what the heck happened to her?
So let’s find out: Wtf Happened to.

Much of its first quarter is devoted to an entire live show from Carnegie Hall in 1971, months after Mitchell’s landmark album Blue had been released. Sounding at the top of her game, vocally and instrumentally, Mitchell opens with a swooping, vivacious “This Flight Tonight.” Accompanying herself on guitar, piano and dulcimer,...

Joni Mitchell Announces The Asylum Years (1972-1975) Archival Box Set, Shares “Help Me” Demo: Stream

Joni Mitchell has announced a new box set called Joni Mitchell Archives, Vol. 3: The Asylum Years (1972-1975), the latest release in her ongoing archival project. The 5xCD/4xLP package is out October 6th via Rhino, while a demo version of her 1974 song “Help Me” is out now.
The Asylum Years refers to the label that released Mitchell’s early ’70s albums, but it also references the artist’s retreat into British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast, a move she made out of frustration with her treatment by the press. Though she temporarily retired from performing live, the move didn’t hinder her songwriting: the period spawned 1972’s For the Roses, 1974’s Court and Spark, and 1975’s The Hissing of Summer Lawns, records that pushed Mitchell into a more jazz-inspired soundscape.

In the midst of Kelly Clarkson’s divorce, she had a revelation. Contrary to the meaning of her 2015 ballad “Piece by Piece,” which praised her talent-manager ex-husband Brandon Blackstock for restoring her faith in men after her father deserted her as a child, the pop singer realized that no one could truly heal her but herself. “It’s almost too much to put on someone to do that for you, you have to do that yourself,” the pop singer admitted on her talk show in 2020. Said revelation appears on Clarkson’s wistful new song,...

Kelly Clarkson doubled up for her first release of original music in six years. Ahead of her forthcoming album Chemistry, set for release on June 23, the singer has introduced the record with two separate outlooks on two different songs, “Me” and “Mine.”
“We decided to release ‘mine’ and ‘me’ at the same time because I didn’t want to release just one song to represent an entire album, or relationship,” Clarkson explained in a statement. “There are many stages of grief and loss on this album. Each song is a different stage and emotional state.

Emilie (Valeria Bruni Tedeschi) with Anaïs (Anaïs Demoustier) in Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet’s lively Anaïs In Love (Les Amours d'Anaïs)
My first interaction with Anaïs In Love (Les Amours d'Anaïs) director Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet was when I sent in a question during Unifrance’s 10 Talents To Watch in 2022 panel in Paris: “Which film you saw did you particularly like in 2021?” Her response included Leos Carax’s Annette (seen at Cannes), Bruno Dumont's France, starring Léa Seydoux, Joachim Trier’s The Worst Person In The World, and Mathieu Amalric’s Hold Me Tight (another highlight of New York’s Rendez-Vous with French Cinema).
Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet with Anne-Katrin Titze on Marguerite Duras and Alain Robbe-Grillet: “It mattered to me that the film was situated in this universe, this world of literature.”

One of the most delightful films I’ve seen thus far in this early year is Anaïs in Love, Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet’s Cannes selection which was picked up by Magnolia Pictures for a release this spring. Ahead of the debut next month, the first trailer has now arrived.
The French comedy examines modern romance and erratic youthful passions with a Rohmerian touch as we follow a spirited young woman (a great Anaïs Demoustier) who falls in love with the novelist wife of the man with whom she’s having an affair. If you’re in the NYC area, the film plays this Friday at Rendez-Vous with French Cinema, otherwise one can check it out starting April 29 in theaters and May 6 on VOD.
Also starring Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Denis Podalydès, Jean-Charles Clichet, Xavier Guelf, and Christophe Montenez, see the trailer and poster below.
Anaïs in Love opens on April 29 in theaters and on May 6 on demand.

Amid the mounting pressure on Spotify over allegations of Covid misinformation presented on its Joe Rogan Experience podcast, the show’s host made an apology of sorts — “if I pissed you off, I’m sorry” — and garnered support from Dwayne Johnson, Kevin James, Jewel, Jamie Kennedy, Tulsi Gabbard, Troy Aikman, Kat Von D, Domanic Monaghan, Candice Owens, Jillian Michaels, Tomi Lahren and Andrew Dice Clay.
All of those boldfaced names responded in the comments section of the Instagram video that Rogan posted Monday in which he said he just likes to have “interesting conversations with people that have differing opinions,” but admitted he doesn’t “always get it right” and promised to “do better.”
He did so in response to criticism from Neil Young and Joni Mitchell aover what they called “fake information about vaccines” presented on his show. Rogan did not go so far as to characterize views expressed on his show as “fake.

Khalid shared a preview of his upcoming song "Fall in Love at Christmas" with Mariah Carey, and their harmonies are incredible! The song, which Carey teased earlier this week and comes out on Nov. 5, is already a contender for the best holiday song of the season, aside from Carey's "All I Want For Christmas," of course. In the 30-second snippet Khalid shared, he and Carey harmonize in the chorus, singing, "We're gonna fall in love again at Christmas time." Carey also hits her signature whistle tones. Kirk Franklin is on the track as well, though he wasn't featured in the teaser. "Fall In Love At Christmas ❤️...

Country singer Billy Currington has emerged from wherever he goes for years at a time and dropped a surprise new album. The “People Are Crazy” singer’s seventh major-label release Intuition is out now and sees him tilting more toward the textures of Eighties synth-pop, dance music, and R&b.
Currington, whose most recent radio single was 2019’s “Details,” has never shied away from experimenting with different styles — “Must Be Doing Somethin’ Right” was sultry country-soul, “We Are Tonight” was an unabashedly U2-style arena-rock anthem, and “Pretty Good at...

Romantic dramedy series returns from a four-year hiatus on May 23
Netflix has released the trailer for the third season of “Master of None,” sharing the first look at the new season starring Lena Waithe and Naomi Ackie.
Waithe, who won an Emmy for writing a Season 2 episode of “Master of None” based on her own coming out experience, takes over as the star of the new season from series co-creator Aziz Ansari, who anchored the first two seasons. “The End of the F***ing World” star Naomi Ackie joins the series as Waithe’s on-screen partner.
Per Netflix, the new season is described as “a modern love story that intimately illustrates the ups and downs of marriage, struggles with fertility, and personal growth both together and apart. Fleeting romantic highs meet crushing personal losses while existential questions of love and living are raised.” It bears the subtitle “Moments in Love.”

May isn’t quite summer yet but it is usually time that the networks start wrapping up their newest shows and preparing for a relatively fallow summer period. Since HBO isn’t a network, it has no such business model. But May sees the winding down of some HBO blockbusters all the same.
While there are some notable new releases for HBO in May 2020, the bigger story might be the things that are ending. Westworld concludes its third season on May 3 while new series Run wraps up on May 24. Thankfully the film losses in May aren’t too bad for HBO, unless the Agent Cody Banks saga drives a lot of traffic.
The most notable TV premiere in May is I Know This Much is True, a book adaptation starring Mark Ruffalo. This is a very bleak story coming along at a bleak time in history but perhaps those two things will cancel out.

When Harvey Weinstein was trying to lose weight and visited one of his sets, handlers advised the crew to remove certain foods from the craft service table. With a crew of well over 100 people, the solution wasn’t to provide an enticing, healthy alternative for the visiting boss, who had to be followed with cans of diet soda like a nurse with an oxygen tank. The solution was to eliminate any food that could be a possible temptation. The assumption was clear: Weinstein’s appetite was huge, his discipline nonexistent, and the entire company needed to cater to his shortcomings.
This isn’t meant to be a metaphor to explain the avalanche of sexual assault accusations against Weinstein. It is one of thousands of examples that show how an entire business was built around his failings as a human being. The traits that he forced his staff to account for...

If your 1990s poster collection didn't include this hunk ... then we feel bad for you.
Freddie Prinze Jr. was a teen heartthrob back in the glory days, starring in numerous rom-coms as the good guy who wins over the leading lady's heart. From "She's All That" (swoon) to "Down To You" (double swoon) to "Head Over Heels" (triple swoon) to "Summer Catch" (Ok, you get it), Prinze was the actor every young girl dreamt about at night -- along with Leonardo DiCaprio, James Van Der Beek and Justin Timberlake.
Not to mention he married everyone's favorite vampire slayer, Sarah Michelle Gellar, in 2002. They have two kids together, daughter Charlotte, 3, and son Rocky, 9 months.
So let's take a look at all the reasons Why we miss Freddie -- and need him to come back into our lives:

Jennifer Lawrence might have been a no-show at the premiere of "Silver Linings Playbook" in NYC last night (Nov. 12), but her co-star Julia Stiles hit the red carpet at the Ziegfeld Theater, stealing the attention from all the other attendees.
Sporting a shorter hairdo, the teen favorite from the late 1990s and early 2000s -- come on, "10 Things I Hate About You," "Down To You," "Save The Last Dance" and "O" -- wowed in a black dress as she proved nothing has changed with age. The 31-year-old actress, who stars in "Silver Linings Playbook" alongside Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro, made sure her legs were the main attraction, something she wasn't so keen on doing over a decade ago.
On Feb. 5, 1999, Stiles, sporting her iconic golden waves, wore a tea-length blue dress at the premiere of the television movie, "The '60s," in Hollywood, Calif. She was only 18 years old.

Mindy Kaling has been blowing up this fall like an adorable, witty neutron bomb. Anne Hathaway has already rolled around nude with Jake Gyllenhaal in Love And Other Drugs, not to mention pulled off a British accent and spectacles for One Day. All signs point to a Kaling-penned/Hathaway-starring rom-com being a runaway success…until you read the film’s plot summary. Entitled The Low Self-Esteem of Lizzie Gillespie, the movie, co-written by Kaling, “centers on a woman whose lack of self-worth has limited her choice in men to losers. When she is about to hit the bottom of the barrel, life takes an unexpected turn when she is pursued by the hottest guy ever.” Hoo boy. The sound you just heard was a million lady-nerds getting their hopes up. Way, way up.

The British network Channel 4 will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its film arm, Film4, with a new iPad app that brings together the trailers, images, posters, Q&As and film info of more than 500 titles supported by the label since 1982. "Slumdog Millionaire," "Sexy Beast" and "Down To You" will share space on the app, known as Film4 at 30, with early works from directors such as Stephen Frears, Derek Jarman, Ken Loach and Peter Greenaway. Known originally as Film on Four, Film4 represented the first foray of a UK broadcaster into the development and co-financing of films. The endeavor's chief innovation, however, was perhaps allowing its movies to play in theaters before their debut television transmissions on Channel 4. Film4 at 30 is available in the iTunes store.

Photo: Warner Bros. I was completely out of the loop when it came to Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever, a film predominantly known at this point as the worst reviewed movie of the last decade by RottenTomatoes standards. So, when I decided I would follow in the footsteps of my previous look at Skyline and regularly take a look back at movies considered to be among the worst ever that I had not yet seen, there was no better place to start.
In short, yes, this is a bad film. Terrible in fact. Is it the worst? That's all relative to the discussion. Worst in what way? Plot? Characters? Execution? Entertainment? In all honesty, this is a film I would consider a perfect entry in a new age of grindhouse. All I could think of while watching the inexplicable amount of explosions, lack of story and silly predicaments was of Robert Rodriguez...

Director Steven Antin takes us behind-the-scenes of this epic battle between divas Cher and Christina Aguilera
Director Steven Antin's hit musical Burlesque arrives on Blu-ray and DVD today, March 1st. Starring the mega-powerhouse musical divas Cher and Christina Aguilera, this raucous tale follows one small-town girl with big dreams and an even bigger voice who takes Los Angeles' underground Burlesque scene by storm.
We recently met up with Steven Antin, who you may remember from his iconic turns in both The Last American Virgin and The Goonies, to chat about his transition from being an actor to becoming a sought after director, working with two of the biggest names in music, and why he is attracted to the musical as a genre.
Here is our conversation.
How did this transition from being an actor, to becoming a writer, to becoming a director happen?

Sharp dialogue and a fiery redhead highlight an unexpected comedy surprise.
Nobody has been able to capture the facetious moments and day-to-day malaise of adolescence like John Hughes did in the 1980s. Films like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Sixteen Candles, and The Breakfast Club helped to define a generation. A generation that wishes it could be as unrestrained and live every moment like Ferris Bueller or wishes for just a little recognition on a sixteenth birthday. A lot of films have tried to match the writer-director’s deftness at creating scenes that explore that youthful exuberance. Unfortunately, what we’re left with most of the time is sex comedies and romantic comedies without nearly the heart or humor. For every Clueless, which defined teenage life in ‘90s, there’s a Down to You or She’s All That. Actually, the output of teen comedies - let alone good-great teen...

There were a lot of bad movies released during the past decade. That’s not anything that distinguishes the aughts from any other decade before it, but then most of these movies were bad in the usual, torturous ways. There is, of course, a lot of room for debate over these picks and readers should be aware that for my own sanity (sorry Rob Schneider), I purposefully skipped many top contenders. Without further ado, in descending order, our worst 15: The Dukes of Hazzard (2005) I’m not a fan of movies about really stupid people behaving stupidly, and that’s all that happens in this smoldering pile of TV adapted junk. Johnny Knoxville and Seann William Scott indulge their worst instincts in a laugh free assemblage of moronic Southern stereotypes and car crashes that’s like a horrible, Z grade 80s comedy nightmare come to life. It’s even got Burt Reynolds. Lady in the Water...

I would list 10 things I love about Julia Stiles, but I don't have the energy to try to justify the existence of A Guy Thing and Down To You. With that in mind, I'll just cut to the chase: one reason I love Julia Stiles is this parody video, which takes a jab at several of the so-called celebrity "designers" (yes, you, Lindsay!) who've unleashed their ill-advised visions on the world. Not only does the video prove that Stiles is best when delivering that acerbic wit of hers, but I have to give the girl props for supporting the journalists: "People say that the newspaper industry is dying, but I say it's living. Living on your body." Watch the parody below to see Stiles' eco-friendly invention of shants, and think about how much this makes up for The Omen.

Freddie Prinze Jr. Retires From Teen Flicks

Hollywood heart-throb Freddie Prinze Jr. is retiring - but only from the teen roles that made him a star. The 24-year-old I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) star has gained a reputation for playing lovestruck teens in films like She's All That (1999) and Down to You (2000). But Prinze says he wanted to make a trilogy of teen flicks because he missed out on watching the teen movies of his generation. He explains, "These were three movies that I wanted to make - Boys and Girls (2000), Down to You (2000) and She's All That (1999). When I made She's All That (1999), I said I wanted to make these three movies for a generation. I wanted them to have a video library of movies they can relate to. It was kind of a goal of mine because I wanted that generation to have something I didn't. And now I'm finished with those. I've already made a couple of different kinds of movies and I'm very happy with them." Freddie next gets to play an adult in Head Over Heels (2001) - in which he's a 27-year-old businessman - and Summer Catch (2000), where he plays a 25-year-old aspiring baseball pitcher.
