Damien Leone’s “Terrifier 3” (Iconic/Cineverse) grossed about $27 million in the U.S./Canada in its first week. That will make it easily #1, helped by the second-week collapse of “Joker: Folie à Deux” (Warner Bros.), which will end up #4 with around $10 million.
The slasher/horror sequel will ultimately earn a massive profit. With a reported production and marketing cost of around $5 million and additional revenues, “Terrifier 3” investors could easily see profits far exceeding $50 million.
Apart from its cost, other elements leading up to the slasher film’s success are unusual. As with any sleeper hit, its successes will be examined by studios to see if they can be replicated.
If “Terrifier 3” does lead to major changes, it will follow the lead of John Carpenter’s “Halloween” (1978) and Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez’s “The Blair Witch Project” (1999). And not just in terms of its impact on the horror genre.

What does "Pulp Fiction" have to do with low-budget horror movies? Well, the film's $8 million budget might seem like a fairly significant amount of money, but it's not the kind of figure you'd expect for a film starring Samuel L. Jackson, John Travolta, and Uma Thurman. Of course, at the time those actors weren't the bonafide megastars they'd become, or, in Travolta's case, king of the 0% Rotten Tomatoes score. Still, $8 million is more the kind of budget you'd expect for a mid-range horror movie, so it's impressive Quentin Tarantino managed to make $212 million from his off-beat postmodern pastiche.
That's not the only connection between "Pulp Fiction" and horror, either. Aside from the film's often striking depictions of violence, there's a surprising link between one of its stars and an ultra low-budget horror movie that debuted the same decade as Tarantino's film.

Spoopy Season is upon us, dear readers, and any cineaste worth their weight in bone matter is likely scouring the world's many streaming services looking for the best fright flicks available. Most casual horror fans may be content to idly re-watch well-trodden classics like "Halloween," while more enterprising gorehounds will be studiously studying the carefully curated films on Shudder. The jaded, more experienced fright fans, however, will require stronger coffee to get their fear fix, and those brave souls may dive face-first into the overstuffed trough of Night Flight or Eternal Family, looking for oddities that the average soul cannot stand. Are you going to watch a gentle film like "Hocus Pocus" this October, or are you the type to try out "Bloody Muscle Bodybuilder in Hell?"

Since watching it with my friends at our annual Scary Movie Marathon years ago, The Houses October Built has been one of my favorite found footage horror films, perfectly encapsulating the "wait, is this real?" vibe of The Blair Witch Project and infusing it into the world of real-life scare attractions throughout autumnal America. This year marks one decade since The Houses October Built was released, and its approach to immersive horror is even more timely now that when it first graced screens back in 2014 and introduced viewers to Brandy, Zack, Bobby, Mikey, and Jeff, a quintet of thrill-seekers filming a documentary on haunted attractions who gradually get pulled into the wicked web of Blue Skeleton: a haunt that is extremely immersive and more real than they could ever imagine.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die (Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah)
Bad Boys: Ride or Die is a film about retribution and redemption. Not just on screen, but in execution. After their last attempt at a blockbuster was shelved in the name of a tax loophole, directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah seem intent on unleashing all their pent-up energy, whether they’re selling us Batgirls or Bad Boys. Even if it bears the baggage of a meta redemption arc for its star, Ride or Die brings enough stylistic gusto to its action in the absence of Michael Bay but has a hard time justifying most other decisions, which adopt the tedium rampant in modern blockbuster filmmaking. – Conor O. As we’re well into October, I’m sure plenty of you have already watched more than a few horror movies (as if you need an excuse), but it’s always fun to see what other folks recommend for the spooky season. Kevin Bacon, who I believe has appeared in a few horror movies, took to Instagram to share a list of twenty of his personal favourites.
Audition Don’t Look Now One Cut of the Dead Dawn of the Dead (1978) Shaun of the Dead 28 Days Later Get Out A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night Let The Right One In X Pearl MaXXXine The Witch The Love Witch The Blair Witch Project The Descent Slither Midsommar Martyrs Hereditary Smile Stir of Echoes
A quality list, and as you can see, Bacon appears in a few of them. Bacon’s most recent horror movie was MaXXXine, which appears on the list alongside X and Pearl.

Everyone’s got horror on the mind as we inch closer to Halloween, and that list of “everyone” most definitely includes Kevin Bacon, who has damn sure made his mark on the horror genre over the years. From appearing in the original Friday the 13th to starring in this year’s MaXXXine, Bacon’s horror pedigree is strong – and he’s a genre fan through and through.
Bacon notes in one of the bonus features for MaXXXine, “I’m a huge horror film fan.” And he’s building on that statement over on Twitter today, sharing some of his personal favorites.
“I love October because it’s all about apples and leaves changing and pumpkins, but it’s also about horror movies,” he begins the video. “So here are 20 of my favorite horror movies in no particular order.” The list naturally includes some films the Bacon family has appeared in,...

Stephen King knows horror. The bestselling author has been scaring people for more than 50 years now, with the vast majority of his books being turned into memorable horror movies. Because of this, King's thoughts on the genre often get lots of attention. He has an entire non-fiction book about the art of horror, and he often offers up his opinion on horror movies. In a new essay over at Variety, King tackles a loaded subject: the scariest movie ever made. King is smart enough to acknowledge that the concept of something being thought of as the "scariest" is relative. "My conclusion is that the 'scariest' varies according to the viewer's age," King writes. "As a kid of 16, the scariest movie was 'The Haunting' (directed by Robert Wise). As an adult, it was 'The Blair Witch Project,' with that building sense of doom and those truly horrible last 35 seconds.

This essay by Stephen King on his favorite horror movie of all time is one of several contributed as part of Variety’s 100 Best Horror Movies of All Time package.
I thought deeply about this question, perhaps more deeply than the subject — my scariest horror movie — deserves… but then, I’ve seen a lot of horror movies, so maybe it’s a valid Q.

Filming intimate scenes must be the weirdest part of an actor's job -- and according to Andrew Garfield, he and Florence Pugh made everything much, much weirder by taking a sex scene way too far on the set of their new romantic drama "We Live in Time."
During a live taping of Josh Horowitz's "Happy Sad Confused" podcast (via a social media post mined by Variety), Garfield literally re-enacted the hilarious moment on set, explaining that he and Pugh had to shoot a sex scene alongside only a couple crew members (for privacy).
"We do the first take of this very intimate, passionate sex scene," Garfield explained. "And it's a closed set, which means it's only me and Florence in a room together and the camera operator, who is our [director of photography], a very lovely man called Stuart [Bentley]. The scene becomes passionate, and we choreographed it, and we get into it,...

What would you consider the best film franchise of all time? Despite the objective metrics for success -– box office, critical consensus, awards and quantifiable impact -– this is a surprisingly subjective question, and the answer you give may say more about yourself than anything else. You might go to bat for genre-defining classics like the "Alien" franchise or "Scream" movies, or highlight childhood favorites for your generation, like "Harry Potter" or "Indiana Jones." Franchises surrounded by big mythology (on screen and off), like "Star Wars," often earn greatest-of-all-time status for fans, while arthouse lovers may pick something less familiar to American audiences, like Satyajit Ray's The Apu Trilogy.
It's a question with either no right answers or many, depending on how you look at it, but the folks at aggregate site Metacritic recently decided to answer it for themselves once and for all by using their well-established system...

Anthology films have become synonymous with the expression "mixed bag," as it's incredibly difficult to bring in multiple different directors with distinct voices to create short films and expect there to be an equal level of quality or tone. In my opinion, that's part of the fun. An anthology film gives me the chance to micro-dose an experience of a time gone by, where I'd agonize over VHS box cover art in the hopes that whatever I brought home would become my new favorite movie. If it didn't, that's okay, because I could just move on to the next one. The "V/H/S" films capture that experience, and every so often, a segment transcends its place within the anthology and becomes something singular. There are plenty of "V/H/S" segments that I adore and can watch on repeat without ever tiring, but there will always only be one "Safe Haven.

The next time you see The Texas Chain Saw Massacre – and if you haven’t seen it, brace yourself accordingly – close your eyes for the first five or 10 minutes and listen, preferably with a good set of headphones. Because as extraordinary and unforgettable as so many of the images are, the soul of the film comes through on the soundtrack, which unsettles you on several different fronts at once. And now 50 years later, when it’s rightly placed on the shortest of shortlists for the greatest horror films ever made, the film’s ambience still blankets American culture, the low hum (and occasional random shriek) of media malevolence.

Found Footage Alert, ya’ll. We got another one! This new addition to the best dang subgenre in modern horror, titled What Happened To Dorothy Bell?, takes the terror out of the backwoods and onto the bookshelves with a classic ghost set-up (or maybe demon!? it’s always a 50/50 shot) that explores loss, tragedy, and mental health. Written and directed by Danny Villanueva Jr., What Happened To Dorothy Bell? stars Asya Meadows as Ozzy, a young isolated adult who documents her march into madness.
Ozzy has been estranged from her parents after discovering a dark secret about her grandmother that the family had tried to keep hidden from her. She has been working with a therapist (played by A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child‘s Lisa Wilcox) to unpack the aftermath of that revelation, and combing through old home videos from her childhood. The horror genre might be the only genre where a low budget can have a positive effect on the final product. Horror movie fans are often swayed by the quote-unquote charm of a thriller with mere pennies to its name; and if the finished picture has a certain energy and style to it, the fact that it had no money to work with becomes part of its allure and legacy. We think of movies like Night of the Living Dead, The Blair Witch Project and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, to name an obvious few. Perhaps a not-so-obvious choice would be Basket Case (watch it Here), Frank Henenlotter’s deranged tale about a couple of conjoined twins who share an unusual bond. Or at least, they used to… It’s a funky, disorienting little item, and while the lack of money is always apparent on-screen, it’s ends up being to the movie’s benefit.

I’ve always found it strange how Found Footage appears more frequently in film than in television. If you think about it, most of the recovered footage that we see in real life comes from True Crime TV and investigative journalism rather than movies – or at least it used to before the internet turned the whole world into one giant Found Footage horror flick streaming live until the end of time.
Despite this, there were actually quite a few big-name TV shows that recognized the storytelling potential of the Found Footage format and decided to experiment with Pov filmmaking during their run. And in honor of these small screen pioneers, today we’d like to highlight six excellent Found Footage episodes of non-Found-Footage TV shows.

Over the past couple years, Hollywood has realized something the internet’s known for years: YouTube is the home for indie horror. There is a veritable smorgasbord of short horror films posted across the platform, with some nabbing hundreds of thousands and even millions of views. And those films are helping YouTube creators like RackaRacka and Chris Stuckmann pave a path to the big screen.
The latest creator to join them is Curry Barker, whose 2023 horror short The Chair (5.5 million views) put him on the map, and whose latest project, a full-length, 62-minute found footage film called Milk & Serial, is turning him into a serious contender for top up-and-coming horror writer/director/actor/you-name-it-he’s-got-it.
Barker and his crew made Milk & Serial for $800. They all worked pro bono as the film’s cast of influencer-and-friends characters, so the production budget was used to compensate the one outside actor they hired.

The iconic horror film, which propelled the found footage genre into the 21st century, apparently has never been released as “intended,” according to Monello. A limited edition re-release with the correct version will be out on Blu-ray in November 2024 via Second Sight Films.
“In 1999, theatrical films didn’t originate on video, so there was no codified process for putting them out on video. So they did it like all films back then: They transferred the 35mm negative to video,” Monello tweeted. “Unfortunately, the 35mm negative is Not the actual camera negative. As a result, the version released for all forms of home video is incorrect. The colors, the motion, the strange rounded corners, it didn’t look like a home video, and it didn’t look like film.”

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
1999 is widely considered to be one of the best years in cinema history. Truthfully, 25 years later, it's not remotely hard to see why. It saw the release of groundbreaking films like "The Matrix," which remains one of the most important sci-fi hits ever made. The likes of "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace," "Toy Story 2," "The Blair Witch Project," "American Pie," "Sleepy Hollow," "Deep Blue Sea," "Eyes Wide Shut," "Fight Club," "The Mummy," and so much more. It's an embarrassment of riches.
Unfortunately, even the best year is going to have its share of misfires. As far as 1999 goes, the biggest misfire of them all (at least by reputation) is unquestionably "The 13th Warrior." Directed by John McTiernan, of "Die Hard" and "Predator" fame,...

The Blair Witch Project has been back in the news big time, and this time, no one is questioning whether it’s real or not.
You may have heard that the production company Lionsgate announced that they’re teaming up with Blumhouse to reimagine (read: reboot) some of their horror classics, starting with The Blair Witch Project, and in addition to predictably mixed internet reactions about the prospect of a new/old film, the announcement also kicked up some old resentments among the original stars. Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams, and Joshua Leonard wrote an open letter to Lionsgate requesting residuals, input on how their images are used in the franchise going forward, and a grant for young filmmakers.
What may come as slightly more surprising is that since The Blair Witch Project came out, dozens of Blair Witch properties have come out without the direct participation of Donahue, Williams,...

The horror genre has continued to remain a crucial part of the filmmaking industry. Looking back at two of the most iconic films –The Blair Witch Project (1999) and Cloverfield (2008), they had one particular factor in common: both these movies were filmed with found-footage technique.
A still from The Blair Witch Project (1999) | Haxan Films
It is a part of the filmmaking technique where the story is presented as if it was recorded by the characters in the story. Although these movies garnered critical and commercial success, the filmmaking technique ended up troubling audiences, which could have easily sunk their reception.
The Blair Witch Project Made Audiences Sick
Released in 1999, The Blair Witch Project left an indelible mark on the horror genre with its low-budget, found-footage approach. It heavily utilized shaky camerawork to create a sense of realism and fear.

Sometimes, the wrong movies get all of the credit. The Sixth Sense has become famous for its shocking twist. It would have been a lot more shocking if a cult classic movie didn’t pull off the same twist decades earlier.
‘The Sixth Sense’ has the same twist as a classic horror movie
The 1990s were a terrible time for horror movies. For every good 1990s horror film like Scream or The Blair Witch Project, the decade churned out several duds like I Know What You Did Last Summer, Leprechaun, or Bram Stoker’s Dracula. In that context, The Sixth Sense looked a lot better than it actually was. The story is drawn out, humorless, and overly somber. The overall mood of The Sixth Sense is more depressing than scary.

In the summer of 2007 a group of emerging filmmakers and actors set out into the Scottish wilderness to make a low budget horror film in homage to the low budget American horror films of the 1970s. The grizzly slasher titled The Bench has never been completed, until now.
Inspired by Tobe Hooper’s original Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), this team of filmmakers led by writer / director Sean Wilkie (Matter of Time) used the HD revolution to their advantage, shooting the film on Hdv tape lends a quality that’s been absent from cinema since 16mm celluloid went out of fashion some decades earlier, the film taps into elements established by the grungy guerilla films such as The Blair Witch Project.

There’s some undeniable wisdom in that Mark Twain quote about writing what you know, and that’s likely the reason why some of the best films of all time are about filmmaking itself. This also applies to the horror genre, as we can see from beloved classics like Wes Craven’s New Nightmare and even The Blair Witch Project.
And in honor of recent meta horror flicks like MaXXXine and The Exorcism (not to be confused with The Pope’s Exorcist), we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating 6 underrated Hollywood Horror Films that explore the dark side of show business.
For the purposes of this list, we’ll be defining ‘Hollywood Horror’ as scary movies where filmmaking itself is a source of scares. That being said, we’ll be avoiding Found Footage movies since most of them are already exercises in meta storytelling.

To lead the next installment in the “Alien” franchise, Cailee Spaeny actually looked to other classic horror films to maintain a sense of terror on set.
Breakout “Priscilla” actress Spaeny told SFX magazine that while she did her best to convey being horrified during scenes for “Alien: Romulus,” she sometimes had to call in reinforcements to inspire fear.
“You do sort of run out of ideas. You’re like, ‘I don’t know how to be horrified again today in an interesting way. I’ve got, like, three facial expressions and you’ve seen all of them about 100 times now!'” Spaeny said. “Honestly, when you shoot a movie like this for months, and you’re doing so many horror beats, you do run out of ways to be horrified! The whole time I was making the movie, the second I got home I either had a sci-fi or a...

Once every year or two a movie comes along that brings fresh energy to the found-footage horror movie, a terrain that’s been mercilessly, repetitiously over-tilled since “The Blair Witch Project” broke out a quarter-century ago. Unfortunately, “In Our Blood” does not capture that prize for 2024. Though a notch above the subgenre’s norm in terms of acting and production polish, documentarian Pedro Kos’ first narrative feature — in which two filmmakers investigate mysterious disappearances around Las Cruces, New Mexico — ultimately teases expectations too long en route to an underwhelming resolution.
With overt horror elements delayed until the last 20 minutes or so, the film ends up feeling like an attenuated prologue for a series in the general conceptual (if not budgetary) wheelhouse of “Blade” or “Underworld.” But it’s anyone’s guess whether this Fantasia premiere will spark the kind of enthusiasm that merits a single follow-up, let alone several.

The Blair Witch Project producer Michael Monello says the upcoming October Blu-ray release of the movie from Second Sight will finally “represent the filmmakers complete vision for the film” after years of sub-par transfers.
“For 25 years, Artisan/Lions Gate have been content to put out a version of this film that is Not how the filmmakers intended it to look, with broken motion and film grain over video,” Monello said. “Now that we have an actual filmmaker and producer approved version coming out, I think I’ve earned the right to dump on a release of the transfer that Artisan did without consulting us. If they want to cash grab dump it in the market I can’t stop them, but I’m not going to shut up about something I worked so hard on being released with a shoddy transfer and the same old extras.“

Shelby Oaks is the highly anticipated debut film from Chris Stuckmann, the film critic and YouTube sensation who has parlayed his love of genre film into bringing this story of revenge and redemption to the big screen. Promising to tap the font of found footage films from the ‘90s and 2000s,...

Paramount Pictures is resurrecting the once-popular Scary Movie spoof franchise with a brand new reboot movie that’s expected to slash into theaters in 2025, but can we expect any stars of the original franchise to reprise their roles? Chatting with People this week, Scary Movie mainstay Anna Faris comments on what it would take to bring her back to the franchise.
Anna Faris starred alongside Regina Hall in the first four Scary Movie installments, with Faris playing Cindy Campbell and Hall playing her character’s best friend, Brenda Meeks. And it sounds like Faris doesn’t plan on returning unless Regina Hall is also asked to return.
“I would love to work with Regina [Hall] again. I just love her so much,” Faris answered when the outlet asked her what it would take to get her to sign on. “We would make each other giggle all day long. Regina Hall would be my answer.

Plot: When Riley (Sarah Durn), a YouTube paranormal investigator, disappears, her older sister, Mia (Camille Sullivan), frantically searches for her.
Review: Of all the films premiering at this year’s edition of the Fantasia Film Festival, very few have piqued the interest of genre fans everywhere, like Shelby Oaks. The feature directorial debut of YouTube film critic Chris Stuckmann (who also wrote and co-produced the film), it was recently snapped up for theatrical release by Neon, who are riding high as a genre distributor following the success of Longlegs. Many of his fans are curious whether Stuckmann’s on-camera criticism translates into solid directorial chops.
So what’s the result? Sad to say, the hope that Shelby Oaks would be the next great horror debut was overblown. This is meant as no sleight against Stuckmann who, I must admit, I know next to nothing about. I’ve only seen a handful of his reviews,...

The feature film debut of writer/director Chris Stuckmann has a solid, albeit slightly familiar, premise. In 2008, four YouTubers known for a ghost hunting show called ‘Paranormal Paranoids’ go missing near the deserted town of Shelby Oaks, sparking conspiracy theories and suspicions it’s a hoax to increase the channel’s notoriety.
When the bodies of Laura (Caisey Cole), Peter (Anthony Baldasare), and David (Eric Francis Malaragni) are discovered, however, the focus shifts to the fourth member: host Riley (Sarah Durn), whose disappearance prompts nationwide speculation around the question: “Who took Riley Brennan?”
That’s the question that Riley’s older sister Mia (Camille Sullivan) can’t stop thinking about. Twelve long years after the disappearance of her supernaturally gifted sibling, Mia is being interviewed by a documentary team led by Janet (Emily Bennett). It’s something of a hail mary by Mia’s husband Robert (Brendan Sexton III), who...

There’s been a bit of mystery surrounding Shelby Oaks, the directorial debut of Chris Stuckmann. A YouTuber who got his start reviewing films and has now amassed over two-million subscribers, Stuckmann pursued his goal of becoming a full-fledged filmmaker, got producers to come aboard, and then pulled off the feat of raising nearly $1.4 million via crowdfunding to finance his film. After making Shelby Oaks, he got Mike Flanagan to sign on as executive producer, nabbed a world premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival, and compelled Neon to pick the film up for a wide theatrical release. While he’s not the first person to pull off the transition from YouTube to theaters––you can look to Danny and Michael Philippou’s (aka RackaRacka) breakout success Talk to Me as another example––Stuckmann’s journey to the big screen is about as ideal as a first-time feature filmmaker could ask for.
