The horror genre possibly harbors the most valuable props you can think of. Freddy's glove, Leatherface's chainsaw and, why not, the cup used by the lady in Get Out to hypnotize Chris. Most horror movies have a specific object that fans would like to own. And as it turns out, you can actually buy one of horror's most precious objects:Evil Dead's Necronomicon, a.k.a. the Book of the Dead, which is activated upon reciting some incantations to summon the visciously playful and wicked demons from Sam Raimi's franchise.

Ethan Embry may only be 46 years old, but he has 35 years of acting credits to his name, having worked on more than 100 different projects. And now he’s set to cross paths with Ghostface, as Deadline reports that he has joined the cast of Scream 7!
Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures once intended to make a Scream 7 that would have starred Scream (2022) and Scream VI leads Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, with Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon at the helm. But then Ortega allegedly asked for a substantial pay raise – and as we saw when Neve Campbell dropped out of Scream VI due to a pay dispute, these pay issues don’t tend to work out. Then Barrera was fired from the project after comments she made about the Israel-Hamas war didn’t go over well with executives at Spyglass. Landon dropped out the of the project soon after.

Are we in for more visitations from the ghosts of Ghostfaces past? Despite being killed off in the first Scream back in 1996, Ghostface killer Skeet Ulrich lingered in the mind of one of the lead characters in Scream (2022) and its follow-up Scream VI… and now Scott Foley, who played the Ghostface killer in Scream 3 back in 2000, has signed on to join the cast of the currently-in-production Scream 7. As Deadline notes, Foley played “antagonist Roman Bridger, the film director and half-brother of Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell)” in Scream 3. Ulrich’s character was seen in hallucinations had by his daughter in the most recent Scream sequels, so maybe Sidney will be having hallucinations of her dead half-brother in the new film. Or maybe they’ll work Foley into this one in a different way…

In the mid-1990s, the slasher genre was on its last breath. Countless sequels, half-hearted attempts at capturing the magic of the ones that came out of the ‘70s and ‘80s, and recycling of the same tropes and clichés had audiences tired of the subgenre. Then in 1996, a little movie called Scream hit theaters and changed everything. With its whodunit premise, meta humor, and fresh take on the typical slasher, it raked in box office money and became an instant classic. It was the revival the genre desperately needed at the time, and it instantly carved its place into horror history.
After Hollywood saw the success of Scream, the teen whodunit slasher dominated the late ‘90s horror world. I Know What You Did Last Summer, Cherry Falls, and even Halloween: H20 emulated the style of Scream, all with varying degrees of critical and commercial success. The movie Virus did not officially scuttle across screens until 1999, but its biomechanical horrors first sprang to life a bit earlier. The road to screen adaptation was not straightforward for Navy Seal turned writer Chuck Pfarrer; he first pitched his high concept to Universal Pictures, only to then have it land at Dark Horse Comics. Upon the series’ success, Pfarrer tried his luck again with Universal. This time, though, producer Gale Anne Hurd was there to help get Virus optioned as well as find a potential director.
It was in 1995 that Universal first approached John Bruno about helming Virus. Initially, the visual effects artist was hesitant about directing a feature, and Pfarrer’s screenplay was a major factor in that uncertainty; he found it to be too dense and complicated for his liking. Yet after a talk with colleague and friend James Cameron, Bruno eventually accepted the offer, providing that...

In hindsight, 1978's "Halloween" was always destined to have a sequel. Co-writer/director John Carpenter and co-writer/producer Debra Hill even included a particularly prophetic line of dialogue in their tale of a supernaturally-charged maniac, Michael Myers, terrorizing his hometown on Halloween night: "You can't kill the bogeyman." Thanks to the film's massive success critically, commercially, and culturally, "Halloween II" was practically a given.
While "Halloween" concludes with the assertion that Myers has indeed not yet been killed, a trickier question for Carpenter and Hill concerned what to do with the other surviving supporting characters. Dr. Sam Loomis (Donald Pleasance) was established as the Van Helsing to Myers' Dracula, so his return was fairly natural. A bigger issue revolved around bringing back star Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode, the babysitter who unfortunately crosses Myers' path and becomes the focus of his All Hallows' Eve rampage. Not wanting to kill...

Quick Links The Plot of Lake Place Is Classic Creature Feature The Stellar Cast Makes It Worthwhile The Humor Made Lake Placid a Cult Classic This 90s Movie Made Crocodiles Creature Feature Icons
Steve Miner is a prolific director known for some of his horror movies that continue to be cult classics in the genre, including iconic sequels in major franchises such as Friday the 13th: Part 2 (1981) and Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998). However, arguably, Miner's most underrated directorial work is the '90s creature feature, Lake Placid. Though other creature features of the time period, such as Anaconda and Tremors, have been widely praised for influencing the horror subgenre, this crocodile movie deserves far more credit than it gets.
Despite having a 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a slightly higher rating on IMDb with a 5.8/10, Lake Placid is one of the most impressive dark comedy creature features in the niche genre.

Nearly two decades removed, Josh Hartnett's cult horror film 30 Days of Night might honestly be one of the most underrated movies in the entire vampire genre. Following his roles in films like Oppenheimer and M. Night Shyamalan's Trap, it feels like Josh Hartnett is enjoying a little bit of a renaissance, though he has been continuously working for the better part of three decades. Given that Hartnett's fame is greater than it has been since his early 2000s days, it's worth looking back on some of his more underrated projects.

When a film is successful enough, a sequel is made. If that does well, it could lead to a trilogy, spin-offs, and suddenly a franchise is born. The problems that then often arise are that these films are rarely written or directed by the same person, the original actors are not always available, and certain storylines might end up being received differently than initially anticipated.
As this happens, some plot points might get pushed to the side or dropped completely. Characters who are fan favorites might meet their grizzly end in one movie, only to be brought back due to popular demand. There are also remakes that may or may not do well, and may or may not need to somehow be inserted back into the original timeline. This all results in a lot of confusion among viewers about some of the longest-running Hollywood franchises.

The world of Stephen King adaptations runs the gamut across nearly every aspect of filmmaking. You have theatrically released ones and straight to video ones. The Halloween franchise's unstoppable bogeyman is possessed by an inhuman evil, but why is Michael Myers so strong? Given how Michael always comes back from death, even if Halloween Ends seemingly killed him forever, there's no definitive answer to this question since the franchise is divided across four different timelines, each of which has offered its own take on Michael Myers. Most recently, 2018's Halloween reset the timeline, ignoring everything from Halloween II onwards and positioning itself as a direct sequel to 1978's Halloween.
From Michael Myers' first appearance on theater screens, his psychiatrist, Dr. Samuel Loomis, maintained that Michael was not a man. When a distraught Laurie Strode calls Michael Myers the bogeyman, Dr. Loomis tells her that she is right. No matter what timeline he's in, Michael is a force of irrepressible evil. However, is Michael Myers immortal? Here's every possible answer to the looming specter of Michael Myers' origins.

Jamie Lee Curtis, who played final girl Laurie Strode in the Halloween series, teased a possible return to the horror franchise. After starring in the original Halloween movie in 1978, Curtis has gone on to appear in six more Halloween films. The most recent installment, 2022's Halloween Ends, served as a conclusion to David Gordon Green's reboot trilogy which began in 2018. However, over its almost 50-year history, the Halloween franchise has ended and then started again in a new form multiple times, so it wouldn't be surprising for another Halloween movie to be released sooner rather than later.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Curtis revealed she may be open to returning to the role. This comes as a surprise, as in the build-up to Halloween Ends, Curtis claimed it would be her last time playing Laurie Strode. It seems only right on All Hallows Eve that Jamie Lee Curtis might be cryptically teasing another go-round with the unstoppable Michael Myers in the Halloween franchise. During a brand-new interview, the famed Scream Queen spoke about a number of her upcoming projects, including her reunion with on-screen daughter Lindsay Lohan in next years Freakier Friday. However, the conversation took an intriguing turn when Curtis also insinuated that she might not be done with The Shape just yet. Curtis told Entertainment Weekly:
"I have hung up my bell-bottoms and my pale blue button-down shirt. And I have relinquished [Laurie Strode] to the ages with a warm, 'aloha,' and a thanks for all the years and memories. And yet, if Ive learned anything in my 65 years on the planet, its never say never."

Jamie Lee Curtis has ended her time with the Halloween franchise multiple times over the years, but she always manages to find a way to return. First in Halloween H20 back in 1998, and of course later in David Gordon Green’s trilogy that came to a close with Halloween Ends. But is she finally ruling out another return? Or is there still life left in Laurie Strode?

Jamie Lee Curtis, the actor known for her roles in True Lies, Trading Places and Everything Everywhere All at Once, celebrates the role that shot her into Hollywood stardom way back in the late 1970s. Curtis gave life to what remains one of her most iconic roles, that of Laurie Strode in John Carpenters slasher classic, Halloween. A role she has reprised as recently as 2022. In honor of spooky season, the actor took to Instagram to celebrate the spooky season and her legacy as the ultimate final girl.
In Halloween, Curtis plays babysitter Laurie Strode, a shy and introverted teenager living in Haddonfield, Illinois. On the night of Halloween, while Laurie is taking care of kids Tommy and Lindsey, and while her friends are misbehaving, the slasher killer Michael Myers comes home. 15 years ago, a then six-year-old Michael savagely stabbed his sister to death, and never spoke a word again.

Halloweens villain Michael Myers has become a cinematic icon and a favorite among horror fans, and while many are aware that Michael Myers was originally named The Shape, they might not know why. The Halloween franchise has seen many ups and downs with multiple retcons, remakes, and reboots of the series. Though not all Halloween films have been successful, they have certainly helped maintain the popularity and reputation of Michael Myers, who is now part of pop culture, being referred to and parodied on multiple occasions in different films and TV shows from all genres.
Michael Myers is credited as "The Shape in the original Halloween before being officially credited as "Michael Myers" in the sequels, only for the most recent Halloween trilogy, including Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends, to return to crediting him as The Shape. A new episode of the Awfully Good Horror Movies video series has just been released, and since this is the week of Halloween, we decided to take a look back at one of the least popular entries in the Halloween franchise, 2002’s Halloween: Resurrection (watch it Here), a movie that took the mostly-clean slate it was handed by the previous film, Halloween H20 (which disregarded the events of all but the first two Halloween movies), fumbled it, and let it shatter on the ground. You can hear all about it by checking out the video embedded above.
Directed by Rick Rosenthal from a screenplay by Larry Brand and Sean Hood, Halloween: Resurrection has the following synopsis: The original house of horrors, the dilapidated home of infamous serial killer Michael Myers, has now become the set of a webcam reality show. But when the veteran slasher discovers that a group of...

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is set to star in Pendulum, a new genre pic directed by Black Swan scribe Mark Heyman and produced by Darren Aronofsky, Deadline reports today.
Pendulum will start principal photography in March 2025 and is described as a “terrifying new genre film.”
The film follows “young couple Patrick (Gordon-Levitt) and Abigail on a journey to a new-age retreat in New Mexico, drawn by the possibility of healing after a traumatic event. Patrick is willing to do anything to help his wife but becomes distrustful of the retreat’s enigmatic leader even as Abigail falls under her spell. As paranoia builds, the couple must determine if the group’s unconventional spiritual practices offer genuine healing – or mask a terrifying truth that threatens to consume them both.”
Aronofsky will produce through his Protozoa outfit. Also joining as producers are Jacob Jaffke (MaXXXine, Dream Scenario, Bodies Bodies Bodies) for Motel Mojave and Dave Caplan (Longlegs) for C2,...

What is the legacy of David Gordon Green's "Halloween" reboot trilogy? When the first film, "Halloween," arrived in 2018, fans and even critics were impressed — a dormant franchise was alive again! But then Green would go on to make two more movies, both of which were met with a much more lukewarm reception. The sequel "Halloween Kills" had plenty of gore, but it was also a bit of a mess and not nearly as praised as the 2018 movie. Then came "Halloween Ends." Marketed as the definitive conclusion to the story of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode, "Halloween Ends" was drubbed by both critics and loyal fans. As a result, the general consensus surrounding Green's trilogy these days seems to be negative. But what if I told you that "Halloween Ends" is ... good, actually? In fact, it might even be great. And you don't have to take my word for it! Stephen King,...

Halloween is almost upon us and just a few days away. It calls for scary decorations, a spiced pumpkin latte, a blanket fort, and spooky movies with family and friends. So Scream 7 has been re-developed, Campbell has signed on to return as franchise heroine Sidney Prescott, back in the lead role – and her Scream (1996) co-star Matthew Lillard has confirmed that if he were asked to reprise the role of killer Stu Macher,...

The “Halloween” movie series has had quite a journey, spanning over four decades and presenting multiple timelines that can leave even the most devoted fans scratching their heads. With the release of each film, Michael Myers has become a horror icon, and Jamie Lee Curtis’ portrayal of Laurie Strode has cemented her as a symbol of survival and strength. Whether you’re new to the series or a long-time fan, knowing the correct order to watch them is essential to fully appreciate the intricate (and sometimes confusing) narrative threads. Here’s a guide on how to watch all the “Halloween” movies in both chronological and release order.
Halloween Movies in Release Date Order
If you prefer to watch the “Halloween” films based on when they were released, here’s how they line up:
Halloween (1978) Halloween II (1981) Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) – (Unrelated to Michael Myers) Halloween 4: The Return...

When John Carpenter made the original “Halloween” in 1978, it was just another horror movie in a long line of horror movies. But the blockbuster success of this low-budget movie, about a masked killer murdering babysitters, made “Halloween” a cultural institution. The film spawned legions of imitators and codified the slasher genre as we still know it. And yet the official “Halloween” franchise has often struggled to meet the standard of the movie that inspired the craze. Let’s look back at all of these classic (and not so classic) horror movies, and see how they stack up.
Behold, all the “Halloween” movies ranked from worst to best.

14. “Halloween: Resurrection” (2002)

Horror movies are closely associated with rapid succession sequels than they are legacy sequels. (How many years did we have a new “Saw” and/or “Paranormal Activity” sequel to look forward to?) But there are still a fair amount of legacy horror sequels – follow-ups that take much longer to marinate than the traditional sequel – and these are the ones that were definitely worth the wait.
Universal “Psycho II” (1983)
The first true legacy horror sequel was a follow-up to perhaps the most celebrated horror movie ever, Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 shocker “Psycho.” “Psycho II” was directed by Australian filmmaker Richard Franklin, whose previous movie “Road Games” is one of the greatest Australian thrillers ever, and was written by Tom Holland, who would go on to direct future classics “Fright Night” and “Child’s Play.”
The sequel sees Norman Bates (once again played by Anthony Perkins) finally released from prison and attempting to enjoy a normal life,...

There's a long history of unusual and downright wild contract stipulations in Hollywood. On the unusual side, when Jack Nicholson signed on to play "The Joker" in 1989's "Batman" he not only negotiated a huge back-end deal that ensured the box office hit likely never made Warner Bros. any money, but he was also afforded time off to watch Lakers games and given top billing over Batman himself, Michael Keaton. On the wilder side, alt-comedy legend Andy Kaufman agreed to appear in a recurring capacity on "Taxi," but only if his alter ego -- sorry, "friend" -- Tony Clifton could appear in an episode.

Halloween H2O introduced a new family member for the franchise's hero and Final Girl, but what happened to Laurie Strode's son, John? Halloween follows the story of Michael Myers, who, after killing his sister when he was six years old, was sent to Smith's Grove Sanitarium. Fifteen years later, Michael escaped and returned to Haddonfield, Illinois, where he began stalking Laurie. As the franchise evolved, Laurie had a daughter, Jamie Lloyd (Danielle Harris), introduced in 1988's Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers. After Laurie's death, Jamie becomes the new protagonist, but her timeline ends up retconned.
The first Halloween retcon happened in 1998 with Halloween H20: 20 Years Later. The new Halloween timeline brings Laurie back and leaves Jamie Lloyd aside. Halloween H20 ignored all the movies after Halloween 2. Laurie and Michael are still siblings, and it's explained that Laurie faked her death so she could hide from Michael and live a normal life,...

Quick Links The Return of Michael Myers Changes the Narrative The Revenge of Michael Myers Is Fantastical Jamie Remains a Halloween Legend
The Halloween franchise is a substantial franchise that has over a dozen movies, even though only a couple of them have received positive critique. Most of the movie series has focused on the dynamic of serial killer Michael Myers and his victim from the original 1978 film Laurie Strode. In the timeline of the first six movies (excluding the outlier Halloween III: Season of the Witch), Laurie is revealed to be Michael's sister, and he goes after her and her family to end their bloodline. In Halloween: H20 and the 2018 revival trilogy, Michael is no longer believed to be Laurie's relative but still goes after her and her loved ones.
The battle between Michael Myers and Jamie Lee Curtis' iconic scream queen role is a trademark of the beloved franchise.

The 1990s were a contentious decade for horror movies, with many films from the era not holding up to the scrutiny of modern sensibilities. Though perhaps not as highly regarded as the previous decade, the greatest 90s horror movies showed off what the decade was capable of, from clever slashers that deconstructed the genre like Scream to thrilling intersections of horror and drama like The Silence of the Lambs. Sadly, not every scary movie ages quite as well as these masterpieces, as the 90s has demonstrated repeatedly.
There are many things that can date a movie quite substantially when looked back on through a modern lens. In many cases, it's changing social norms and the constant evolution of pop culture that reflects poorly on films of the past. However, especially bad special effects or outdated filmmaking practices can be just as destructive to a given movie's longevity, especially in the horror space,...

The Grammy-winning rapper got candid in a recent interview with The Independent about feeling conflicted once his acting career took off in the 1990s.
“The more successful I became in acting, the less I wanted to do it, as it was taking me further away from music,” he admitted. “I later realized I could find the right balance, that I could do all these things I wanted. But it took time.”
While LL Cool J went on to star in dozens of TV shows and movies, including Halloween H20: 20 Years Later, In the House, Any Given Sunday and long-running NCIS: Los Angeles, he also struggled to find time to work on his music, even taking an 11-year musical hiatus following the release of his 2013 Authentic album.

Kevin Williamson is keeping busy like it’s 1998! Best known for writing Scream, Scream 2, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and The Faculty, producing Halloween H20 (while doing uncredited work on the script), and creating Dawson’s Creek, Williamson is currently gearing up to direct his second feature film, Scream 7. Back in February, we heard that he and his producer banner, Outerbanks Entertainment, were developing four major projects as part of an overall deal with Universal Television. One of those TV series projects, a crime drama called The Waterfront, was picked up by the Netflix streaming service back in May.
