With the passing of Donald Sutherland, I was looking through his catalogue for stuff I hadn’t seen yet as I like to look at the entire catalogue to find some hidden gems. What I was reminded of while looking was his stellar horror output over the years. Fallen, The Puppet Masters, Don’t Look Now, Virus, the Salem’s Lot TV miniseries, and of course Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors are all fun to great but for my money, his turn in Invasion of the Body Snatchers (watch it Here) and really the movie in general, is his best stuff. After buying the wonderful 4K from Kino Lorber and rewatching it, I’m also ready to crown it as the best San Francisco based horror movie too. While it can feel every bit as long as it’s 1 hour and 55-minute runtime, it uses that slow build tension to...

Jamie Lee Curtis is one of the most renowned names in the entertainment industry. She is known for her acting range and versatility, which have been followed by immense fame and accolades over the years, including an Academy Award for her role in the 2022 film Everything Everywhere All at Once.

In her 47-year-long career and counting, she has played several iconic roles and does not intend to stop adding more under her belt. The True Lies actress was very eager to portray the role of Doctor Kureha in the widely acclaimed live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece.
However, in a tragic turn of events, that is no longer the case, and it has sent a temper tantrum in the fan community as they believed the 65-year-old actress to be the only one to play the role.

Bud S. Smith, an Oscar-nominated film editor who was a regular collaborator with William Friedkin and whose other credits include “Putney Swope,” “Flashdance” and “The Karate Kid,” died Sunday at his home in Studio City, Calif. due to respiratory failure after a prolonged illness. He was 88.
Smith’s death was confirmed by his wife, dialogue editor Lucy Coldsnow-Smith.
Over a career spanning five decades, Smith was a two-time Academy Award nominee: in 1984 for Adrian Lyne’s romance fantasia “Flashdance,” and in 1974 for William Friedkin’s horror classic “The Exorcist,” which Smith shared a nomination for with Evan A. Lottman and Norman Gay. Smith won the BAFTA award for best editing for “Flashdance” and received a career achievement award from American Cinema Editors in 2008.
After beginning in television and working under David L. Wolper in the ’60s, Smith’s first feature editing credit came at the end of the decade with Robert Downey,...

William Baldwin starred in three projects with Donald Sutherland, the Emmy- and honorary Oscar-winning actor who died Thursday at age 88 after a seven-decade Hollywood career.
Below, he shares his thoughts on Sutherland, his co-star in Ron Howard’s Backdraft, Universal’s Virus and the ABC series Dirty, Sexy, Money.
I have the honor and pleasure of working with Donald Sutherland on three occasions.
The first was when he so brilliantly portrayed the deranged, psychopathic arsonist Ronald in Ron Howard’s Backdraft.
The second was 20 weeks on the Universal sci-fi thriller Virus with Jamie Lee Curtis.
The third, and by far my favorite, was when he played my father and patriarch of the Darling family, Tripp Darling, on the short-lived but wonderful ABC hit Dirty, Sexy, Money.
Donald was a complex, complicated and quirky man in the most delicious way. He had a gentle, childlike boyish streak in him that I absolutely adored.

After a long battle with illness, it’s been announced this afternoon that the legendary, Emmy-winning actor Donald Sutherland has passed away in Miami, Florida at the age of 88.
Son Kiefer Sutherland writes on Twitter, “With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”
Donald Sutherland made a handful of notable pit stops in the horror genre throughout his multi-decade career on the screen, which kicked off back in the early 1960s. Here in the horror world, Sutherland is known for his roles in Don’t Look Now (1973), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), and most recently, Stephen King adaptation...

Keanu Reeves’s The Matrix is one of the most beloved and widely known film series of all time. Over the last 20 years, the series has found itself ingrained in the very fabric of popular culture. Although it started in 1999 with Reeves’s Neo front and center, its latest and fourth past was released only recently, in 2021.

Reviews of Billie Eilish’s extraordinary Hit Me Hard and Soft have, not surprisingly, underscored the singer’s embrace of her bisexuality. Both the 22-year-old’s sense of style and dry, clipped vocal delivery are at times reminiscent of another queer trailblazer, Ani Difranco, whose fierce independence helped carve a path for “outsider pop” artists like Eilish—and who also has a new album out this week.
Unlike Eilish’s latest, Unprecedented Sh!t is less interested in interpersonal relationships than the sociopolitical conditions surrounding them. On “Virus,” Difranco examines her guilt about how Covid affected her (“I was so deeply pleased to pause this life/I think I jinxed the world and caused this strife”) and acknowledges the ways in which we silo ourselves from each other (“I just keep listening to my own voice/In the echo chamber of my choice”).

The end of the 1990s was an odd time for cinema and in general. We were in the midst of Y2K, a panic over clocks and computers needing to roll over from 99 to 00, something people feared more than monsters and cults, something people really feared and fearmongered about. It was expected to be something of an apocalypse by some. So of course, Hollywood ran with it. Technology gone wrong, end of days, Satan coming to Earth, etc. We got films like Strange Days, Stigmata, eXistenZ, Virus, The Matrix, and End of Days (watch it Here), our movie today.
Following a dry patch of work for Arnold Schwarzenegger following Batman & Robin and heart surgery, he didn’t get all that many offers and eventually, it seemed like he would not be coming back. Then, End of Days came his way, and it seemed like a good, if darker than his then-recent work,...

As we have mentioned many times before, the documentary format has been improving significantly through the latest years, particularly due to the increased exposure of the category due to both festivals and streaming services. With the main motto here being that ‘reality goes beyond any kind of imagination', the stories presented have been shocking and at the same time, quite entertaining, particularly since a number of Asian countries have started loosening the control over information available and the overall censorship. Even in countries that have not done the same, the result is actually similar, due to the diaspora filmmakers, who, outside the confines of authorities, managed to say all those things they were supposed not to. Lastly, the rise of the mockumentary, which seems to be included in various programs more as documentary rather than fiction, adds even more depth to the category.

Gather 'round fellow Supes and sickos, because "The Boys" are back in town for season 4. The smash-hit superhero satire series on Prime Video has been one of the streamer's greatest success stories, spawning the equally popular animated spin-off "Diabolical," and more recently, the college-set "Gen V." When we last saw the foul-mouthed heroes and villains (and everything in between) at the end of season 3, there were some massive shakeups happening. Homelander straight up killed a guy in front of a crowd to uproarious applause, Annie has given up her role as Starlight and has joined the Boys' mercenary group in an official capacity, and The Seven is in absolute shambles.
Fortunately, we already know we can expect two new Supes, Sister Sage and Firecracker. With Starlight out and Queen Maeve having faked her own death to live a life in obscurity with her partner Elena, it's about time we had...

Things that stressed our parents didn’t worry us one bit and things we stressed about they found silly. Escape was found, as before and as still is, in horror movies. That year saw a few big releases, some great fun ones like eXistenZ, Deep Blue Sea, and Lake Placid, some that were meant to be great like Virus, The Haunting and The Astronaut’s Wife, and a whole lot of middle of the road titles like The Bone Collector, Resurrection, and From Dusk Till Dawn 2. Welcome to Give Me the Fear, a new Frightfest 2023 preview series hosted by screenwriter Stuart Wright.
These brief, spoiler-free interviews will – across the entire series – help you to discover the kind of knowledge and experience about how to make indie horror films that they don’t teach at film school.
After looking back at the blood, sweat and tears that went into their creative successes, I ask them one last question: If you could hand pick one person to be in the audience for your Frightfest screening, who would it be and why? I think you going to love the answers this question elicits.
This episode features The Glenerama Tapes (Tony Devlin), The J-Horror Virus (Jasper Sharp) and Transmission (Michael J Hurst)

This month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies. Some selections reflect a specific day or event in June, and others were chosen at random.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include a Japanese slasher, a dark tale about family, a Scandinavian haunting, a terrifying coming-out story, and an aquatic creature-feature.
The Attic (1980)
Directed by George Edwards and Gary Graver.
Fathers are usually depicted as unkind and cruel in horror, and the one in The Attic is no exception. Carrie Snodgress plays the dutiful Louise who has sacrificed her own happiness for far too long. When she tries to turn her life around and do something about her loneliness, which entails adopting a chimpanzee, her tyrannical father (Ray Milland) is quick to stomp out her ambitions.

As Scream Factory continues to release pared-down catalogue titles on their now five-year-old label, the brand keeps expanding to include all different kinds of movies. Once known for releasing deluxe special editions of horror fan favorites, the company has diversified over the last half decade and begun releasing new films (as part of their deal with IFC midnight), unknown (and sometimes previously unavailable) cult films, a handful of classics, and even their own in-house productions. This last batch of catalogue titles, the majority of which have been released with only minimum bonus features but new HD scans, continues to broaden the reach of the Scream Factory brand to include a range of titles from secretly successful ’70s sexploitation sci-fi to well-intentioned failures of the 1990s.
