Shaken, stirred, or even streamed, spy movies make up many of the most exciting, edge-of-your-seat stories the movies have to offer. From the harrowing heights of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise to the suave savvy of six James Bonds, espionage has become the thematic ground on which some of cinema’s most epic dramas, thrillers, and comedies are built. Even films primarily centered on other subject matter make frequent use of spy drama beats, proving it’s a bedrock source for onscreen entertainment.
The espionage genre is as old as filmmaking itself with silent spy movies set against the backdrop of World War I (1914’s “The German Spy Peril” is on YouTube) testing the medium’s limitations early in the 20th century. Literary works inspired many more of the spy movies to follow. Over the years, filmmakers have repeatedly adapted the works of John le Carré, Robert Ludlum, Ian Fleming, and...

If you grew up in the early 2000s, chances are you spent many evenings with Ray Barone (Ray Romano) and his eccentric family in the hit comedy series "Everybody Loves Raymond." For good reason. This critically acclaimed sitcom about Ray, a Newsday sportswriter, dealing with his put-upon wife Debra (Patricia Heaton), bickering parents (Peter Boyle and Doris Roberts), and neurotic brother Robert (Brad Garrett), perfectly captures the working-class family and all its quirks, resulting in a heartfelt, often hilarious look at everyday life.
Running from 1997 to 2005, "Raymond" won 15 Primetime Emmys, garnered critical acclaim, and averaged over 20 million viewers during its peak. More impressively, the cast became household names, forever tied to their characters. Still, while many cast members achieved even greater success following the show's finale, others faded into obscurity or endured heartbreaking tragedy. Interested to learn more? Then, keep reading to see what happened to the cast of "Everybody Loves Raymond.

You can't really have a true 007 adventure without an opening title sequence. They're a seminal piece of the James Bond experience that thematically set the tone for the film you're about to watch. It's difficult to imagine that ever going away even with the creative changing of the guard to Amazon MGM Studios. The ingenuity in their kaleidoscopic imagery has evolved over a number of ways across the franchise's six decade run. But it's ultimately the musical selection that accompanies these visuals that give these sequences their power. The wrong track — even if it's a good song — can offset the mood of the film.
Nearly every Bond film has had to go through the lengthy process of matching the right voice to those opening titles, with "Thunderball" proving to have one of the most interesting developments. Anyone who's marathoned the title sequences — as I have — knows that suave crooner...

For the bulk of his career, Leslie Nielsen was best known for his stern, dramatic roles. His tall stature and low voice had casting directors offering him parts as commanders, leaders, and even heavies. Many might recall Nielsen's stone-faced turn in 1956's "Forbidden Planet" as the captain in "The Poseidon Adventure," or playing a cop in the 1972 cop drama "The Bold Ones: The Protectors." In 1977's "Day of the Animals" he plays a manly outdoorsman who loses his mind and, quite darkly, declares insane dominion over animals and women. Some might recall that he can hold his breath a long time, as he declared in "Creepshow." Many will be shocked to witness Nielsen beat and assault Barbra Streisand in the 1987 drama "Nuts."
However, Nielsen did appear in a handful of comedies, most notably, playing Dr. Rumack in the Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker farce "Airplane!" The parody proved that he had a talent for deadpan comedy,...

After leading a mixed career as a dramatic actor, Leslie Nielsen experienced one of the greatest career shifts in Hollywood when he reinvented himself as a comedy star, beginning in 1980's Airplane!. Soon after, the actor took on a variety of roles in some of the funniest movies of the next two decades, from police parodies to superhero spoofs. As a result, he has remained one of the most beloved comedy actors of the era, particularly for his deadpan performances.
While his comedy career had its share of hits and misses, Leslie Nielsen always made sure to be the most memorable part of his projects, even if he didn't have a leading role. Under comedy directors like Jim Abrahams, David & Jerry Zucker and Mel Brooks, Nielsen gave audiences the sillier side of humor. While his films might be seen as too low-brow for some viewers, others continue to embrace what...

The 1991 spoof Hot Shots! found itself to a small degree mirroring the front pages of the newspapers – and 20th Century Fox was worried.
Save for a few sporadic examples – the first Scary Movie, for instance, and more recently The Goes Wrong Show on the BBC – it feels like the era of the successful screen spoof came to a juddering halt in the 1990s. In 1993, we had the second of two Hot Shots! films, and in 1994 the Naked Gun trilogy came to an end. After those? It was slim pickings.
There were further attempts to breathe fresh life into the spoof – Spy Hard, Jane Austen’s Mafia!, Wrongfully Accused – but nothing that could live up to some of the movies we got in the 80s and early 90s.
In 1991 in particular, the spoof was a box office draw. This was the year when many big budget Hollywood productions came in well below box office expectations.

The 1980s brought some of the best James Bond movies, like License to Kill and the massively underrated For Your Eyes Only, but it also brought some of the worst, like Octopussy and A View to a Kill. The ‘80s were a very hit-and-miss time for Hollywood, as the experimentation of the American New Wave was replaced by flashy big-budget studio fare, and, by extension, it was a hit-and-miss period for the Bond franchise. The decade kicked off with the final years of the Roger Moore era, when many critics were complaining that Moore had aged out of the role.
After Moore’s tenure ended, Timothy Dalton was brought in with a radical reinvention of the character. The goofy, tongue-in-cheek humor of the Moore era was replaced by a darker, more grounded tone more in line with Ian Fleming’s source material. Dalton’s two Bond movies were the polar...

The Sixth Sense may have been a monster hit, but it inadvertently killed its own studio brand! Here’s how Disney’s mega-hit ended Hollywood Pictures!
Twenty-five years after its debut, much has been written about The Sixth Sense and its impact. One thing overlooked is how almost no one in Hollywood expected this supernatural thriller to make an impact. Indeed, in their annual Summer Movie Preview issue in 1999, Entertainment Weekly didn’t even mention Sense.
Sure, it had a big-name star in Bruce Willis, but it was an odd film from a completely unknown writer/director being released in August, traditionally the dumping ground for bad movies. It debuted to $26.6 million, then the highest August release. Thanks to good reviews, strong word of mouth and, of course, that now-famous twist ending, Sense became the second highest-grossing movie of 1999, $672.8 million worldwide. It earned multiple Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and director,...

Spy spoofs like Austin Powers and Kingsman brought humor and fun back to the genre, poking fun at Bond movie tropes. Archer and Johnny English offer comedic takes on arrogant spies, creating characters that are both silly and endearing. Spoofs like The Tuxedo, Oss 117, and Carry On Spying blend action and humor to create memorable parodies of the Bond franchise.
From Get Smart to the Austin Powers trilogy, there are a ton of hilarious movies and TV shows out there that parody the James Bond franchise. With their goofy one-liners, far-fetched gadgets, and nonsensical villain plans, the Bond movies are an easy target for parody. They even became a sort of self-parody during the Roger Moore years. A movie like Moonraker is so ridiculous on its own that its difficult to make fun of.
A bunch of different movies and TV shows have spoofed the Bond franchise. Archer satirizes Bonds arrogance and self-centeredness.

It's been nearly forty years, but people still remember "The A-Team." The action adventure series went on for five seasons, but stuck around in the public consciousness for much, much longer. People still remember the theme song, the cartoonish violence, the catchphrases. But although many viewers throughout the 2000s wanted a revival of the show, the TV series itself never came back.
Instead, we got a feature film in 2010 starring an updated A-Team, with the characters being veterans of the Iraq War instead of veterans of Vietnam. The film underperformed at the box office, however, and they never made a sequel. Unlike "21 Jump Street," a franchise where the later movies have now long-since overshadowed the TV show for most younger viewers, when people of all ages today think of "The A-Team," they're still almost certainly thinking of the show.
So what have the cast members been up to since...

Hulk Hogan's lack of success in Hollywood can be attributed to his poor movie choices and limited acting range. Hogan struggled to break out of his muscle-bound nice-guy image and land the right projects at the right time. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's success in Hollywood can be attributed to his diverse acting portfolio and his dedication to choosing good material.
Since both The Rock and Hulk Hogan leveraged their experience as WWE wrestlers to become Hollywood stars, their acting career journeys beg an intriguing question: Why The Rock was successful, but Hulk Hogan was not? Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Terry Gene Bollea (aka Hulk Hogan) rank among some of the most accomplished wrestlers of the WWE/F. Several James Bond theme songs have been nominated for an Oscar for Best Original song, and only a few of them have managed to walk away from the ceremony with the golden statuette. As a series of big-budget action movies, the Bond franchise rarely gets any attention from the Academy. An actor playing 007 has never been nominated for Best Actor, none of the scripts have been nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, and a Bond movie has never been nominated for Best Picture. However, it does appear that the theme songs stand out the most, particularly because the lyrics are fitting with the spy genre and resonate deeply.
Ever since Shirley Bassey recorded her iconic title theme for Goldfinger, theme songs by contemporary pop artists have become a fan-favorite staple of the Bond franchise. Just like megalomaniacal villains and trips to exotic locales, Bond fans expect a catchy theme song...

Actors Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis starred in a 1994 action-comedy about a man named Harry Tasker living a double life as both a husband and secret agent.

On the day he would have turned 95 years old, fans all across the world are remembering Leslie Nielsen with tribute posts on social media. With a career in entertainment spanning over six decades, Nielsen played more than 220 characters throughout his lifetime, with the one-of-a-kind actor making each role a memorable performance. We sadly lost Nielsen when he passed away in 2010 at the age of 84, but more than a decade later, fans are still paying tribute to the late actor in honor of his birthday.
"Happy Birthday, Leslie Nielsen! From Forbidden Planet to Naked Gun you could play it straight or make it funny or both," writes one fan on Twitter.

We have a new trailer for Undercover Brother 2, which is probably an assortment of words nobody expected to find themselves reading today. Indeed, Universal Pictures has pulled something of a fast one on all of us by putting together this direct-to-video sequel to its 2001 predecessor rather quietly. Though, it seems to be a sequel mostly in name only, as we've got an entirely new cast, with Michael Jai White as our new titular hero.
The trailer is admittedly brief, clocking in at just 30 seconds, which is normally what we can expect from a TV spot. But this appears to be a very small budget, low-key affair. Though, for those familiar with the 2002 movie, many of the same elements are at play here. We've got the organization known as The Brotherhood, who are tasked with trying to take down The Man. It's all coated in 70s sheen and layers of cheese.

Shazam star Zachary Levi has lined up his next major role. The rising actor is set to take the lead in a new action/comedy titled Spy Guys for New Line Cinema. This comes from producers Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer, who make up the comedy trio The Lonely Island. Jeff Tomsic (Tag) is set to direct and, if all goes well, this project is going to be coming down the pipeline sooner rather than later.
According to a new report, New Line is currently in negotiations with Zachary Levi to take on the lead role in Spy Guys. Weird Al Yankovic has composed the theme song for the upcoming DreamWorks animated superhero adventure Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. The movie, based off of Dav Pilkey's best selling children's book series, isn't set to hit theaters until June 2nd but today DreamWorks has shared "Weird Al" Yankovic's perfect theme song. Yankovic proves that he was born to sing a song about a superhero that only wears underwear and a cape.
"Captain Underpants Theme Song" basically sets up the movie, mentioning key details including that the students only need to snap their fingers to hypnotize their principle turning him into his alter ego, Captain Underpants and his call of "Tra La La." Yankovic calls him the "waistband warrior" and then sings that it's "wedgie power time," while also calling him "the freaky bald dude in his underwear." We’re well aware that the Captain Underpants movie is pretty far outside The A.V. Club’s usual demographic, but there’s not much we won’t put ourselves through for new “Weird Al” Yankovic music. So when we heard that Yankovic was gifting the upcoming film with the same theme song magic he once applied to Spy Hard and his own The Weird Al Show, we couldn’t resist the urge to check it out.
And while the end result’s not exactly “Eat It,” it’s still pretty perky and fun. (“Watch out crime,” Yankovic sings, “It’s wedgie power time.”) We’re not familiar enough with the Underpants Saga to know how faithful Yankovic’s lyrics are to the overall mythos, but it seems to match the film’s bright, juvenile animation pretty well.

Some actors manage to catch lightning in a bottle twice. It’s impressive enough to find your niche in Hollywood’s A-list even once. Occasionally, an actor will reinvent him/herself and begin a new phase of their careers that will be even more successful than it was before. Here are nine actors who had a cinematic rebirth.

Many in Hollywood pair Suzanne Todd with her younger sister and producing partner Jennifer, long known as Team Todd. Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for director Guy Ritchie's spy thriller The Man from U.N.C.L.E., based on the 1960s TV series of the same name. Set during the height of the Cold War, the film stars Armie Hammer and Henry Cavill as a Kgb agent and CIA agent, respectively, who are forced to team up in a joint mission to stop a mysterious criminal organization from proliferating nuclear weapons and technology. This trailer shows off a big, sexy, and fun spy thriller that very much seems to be in the vein of Rictchie's Sherlock Holmes films. The rapport between Hammer and Cavill appears strong, and there's an added draw now in the form of Ex Machina breakout Alicia Vikander as the film's female lead. I like the tone and bombast on display here, and visually Ritchie looks to have found an interesting palette, so I'm looking forward...

Spy Hard: Feig’s Generally Entertaining Espionage Parody
Director Paul Feig does a James Bond send-up for his latest Melissa McCarthy headlined romp, Spy. But for as many laughs as this talented duo is able to generate, its ability to linger in your mind remains questionable. Running a bit long in the tooth, clocking in at two hours and with a handful of scenes and tangents that flat line, a love for the talented and likeable McCarthy will determine audience response to a scenario that’s not exactly fresh. Once again, she’s saddled with playing the buffoon who comes to learn a thing or two about a thing or two, and it would be nice to escape the creepy feeling wherein it sometimes seems we’re supposed to laugh at McCarthy in these illogical scenarios rather than with her.

The world lost two famous supporting screen talents this weekend. Firstly, comedian and famed character actor Taylor Negron died at the age of 57 after a long battle with cancer. You may not recognise the name, but his deadpan delivery and complete lack of fear about tackling all sorts of topics will long be remembered.
Negron is best known for numerous bit roles in various films and TV shows including "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," "The Last Boy Scout," "Easy Money," "River's Edge," "Punchline," "Angels in the Outfield," "Spy Hard," "Bio-Dome," Chairman of the Board," "The Thin Pink Line," "Stuart Little," "The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas ," "The In Crowd," "Loser," "The Hughleys," "So Little Time," "Funky Monkey," "The Aristocrats," "Three Days to Vegas," "Vamps" and more.

Paul Thomas Anderson's adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s 2009 novel Inherent Vice hit the big screen last weekend and tells the tale of a particularly crap (and perpetually stoned) gumshoe named Larry "Doc" Sportello who is roped into a missing-person case by his ex-girlfriend. Sportello’s clumsiness certainly isn’t unprecedented. Here's a look back at ten other hopeless movie and TV detectives whose methods of deduction could leave a game of Guess Who? permanently unwon.10. Dick Steele, Spy Hard (1996)If detectives are designed to play it cool, Secret Agent Dick Steele (Leslie Nielsen) made for one tepid exception. People rightfully had their doubts when a task as simple as Steele hanging his hat came with its own complications. 9. James Carter, Rush Hour (1998)When FBI Agent James Carter (Chris Tucker) was in his element, he was a force to be reckoned with. But upon getting caught up in the case...

Summer movie season is a magic time of year when Hollywood traditionally rolls out its most appealing merchandise. It’s true that some summer movie seasons are better than others. This is our ranking of all the summer movie seasons since 1980 from worst to best.
On January 20th, 1975, Steven Spielberg and Universal Studios released Jaws. The movie landscape would be forever changed from that date. Jaws is widely credited as being the first blockbuster film because it was the first movie to make over $100 million (non-adjusted). The fact that the film had a meager $8 million budget meant that it was a huge cash cow for the studio and rocketed Spielberg to the the forefront of a new generation of filmmakers for a new era of movie mass-consumption. George Lucas and Spielberg followed up in 1977 with Star Wars, which became a sensational and very profitable hit. It helped to convince production...

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers will unite once again to do battle with a series of weird and wonderful monsters. Though the series has been on air since 1993, this new incarnation will be a big budget reboot from the team behind Twilight, The Hunger Games and Divergent.

But what became of the original (and best!) Power Rangers cast we worshipped in the early '90s? Digital Spy finds out what happened to the all-action sextet below.
David Yost (Blue Ranger/Billy Cranston)
David Yost landed the role of Blue Ranger Billy Cranston just three months after moving to California in 1993. In an intriguing piece of trivia, his character was named after Bryan Cranston, who at the time was doing voice work for Power Rangers producer Haim Saban.
Yost appeared in more than 200 episodes of Power Rangers, making him the only Ranger to appear in every episode of the original series.

Following an initial report from CinemaBlend after interviewing director Paul Feig, the spy comedy Susan Cooper starring Melissa McCarthy is lining up an action man for a lead role. For those who don't remember, the film was revealed earlier this summer and was described as the beginning of a potential franchise with the same tone as The Heat, featuring a more realistic approach to the spy action with some laughs as opposed to a spoof of the secret agent subgenre like Spy Hard with Leslie Nielsen. Now Deadline reports Jason Statham might head into the realm of comedy as he's already met with Feig about the film. Negotiations are expected to begin very soon, but we're not sure how Statham's character comes into play. If we had to bet, McCarthy and Statham are spies who are forced to become partners. Though it might seem sudden for Statham to get into...

I think by this point we’re all pulling for Melissa McCarthy. Since her breakout role in Bridesmaids, she’s become a movie mainstay, with her TV show Mike & Molly and her role in the sleeper hit The Heat, alongside Sandra Bullock. Now McCarthy is in talks to rejoin Bridesmaids and The Heat director Paul Feig in the spy comedy Susan Cooper.
According to reports, Melissa McCarthy is currently in talks to play the lead in Susan Cooper. The spy film is being treated as a potential franchise, close in tone to The Heat in terms of realistic action in the midst of a comedy. In other words: don’t go looking for Spy Hard or Austin Powers here. The negotiations right now turn on McCarthy’s scheduling for Mike & Molly, which have to be worked through before they solidify a deal. Given the involvement of Feig, it looks likely...

It seems that director Paul Feig has found the actress that he wants to play the first lead in his upcoming spy comedy Susan Cooper, but if you know his most recent work then it won't be a name that surprises you. The Wrap has reportedly learned from multiple sources close to the new production that Melissa McCarthy is now in talks to take one of the lead roles in the movie. What's strange is that the source doesn't specify what role McCarthy is up for. Earlier reports about the project said that the movie will be a two-hander, but didn't specify the gender of the female spy's partner. Feig wrote the original screenplay for Susan Cooper himself, and while there aren't any plot details currently available, you shouldn't be expecting a spoof like Johnny English or Spy Hard. Instead, the movie is said to be a more realistic comedy...

It would seem the Paul Feig/Melissa McCarthy comedy train is ready to keep clanking right along. The actress is now in early talks to star in the writer/director’s next planned project, Susan Cooper. We say early talks because McCarthy will have to juggle her TV duties on Mike & Molly and the work she’s putting in to editing Tammy, which she co-wrote, produced and directed alongside husband Ben Falcone. Still, given the clearly easy working chemistry between Feig and McCarthy on Bridesmaids and this year’s The Heat, we figure she’ll try to make it work.Feig’s latest is described as a spy film the same way The Heat was about cops – a comedy, but not a Spy Hard-style spoof. The aim is to be realistic in the Casino Royale vein, albeit with less testicle punishment. Or possibly a lot more of it?It...

Following a breakout comedic turn in Bridesmaids, actress Melissa McCarthy reteamed with director Paul Feig and joined forces with Sandra Bullock for this summer's cop comedy The Heat. The film is being eyes as the beginning of a potential franchise with the same tone as The Heat, featuring a more realistic approach to the spy action with some laughs as opposed to a spoof of the secret agent subgenre like Spy Hard with Leslie Nielsen. The Wrap reports McCarthy has an offer for the role and is currently negotiating the details, but scheduling with her CBS comedy series "Mike & Molly" needs to be worked out in order for the deal to come through. Chicago – It is a horror movie image that is immediately recognizable. Michael Berryman portrayed “Pluto” in Wes Craven’s renown 1977 film, “The Hills Have Eyes,” and even the poster image evokes a memory of his distinctive look. Berryman made an appearance last November at the Days of the Dead Horror Convention in Chicagoland.
Part of Berryman’s unique look is due to rare genetic disorder he was born with called Hypohidrotic Ectodermal Dysplasia, which prevents the development of fingernails, teeth and sweat glands. He got his start in the movies in 1975 with “Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze” and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” Two years later he appeared in Craven’s “The Hills Have Eyes” and solidified his niche in cinema history. Over the years, he has appeared in “The Hills Have Eyes Part II” (1984), “Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home” (1986), “Evil Spirits” (1990), “Spy Hard” (1996) and “The...

Los Angeles — Charles Durning grew up in poverty, lost five of his nine siblings to disease, barely lived through D-Day and was taken prisoner at the Battle of the Bulge.
His hard life and wartime trauma provided the basis for a prolific 50-year career as a consummate Oscar-nominated character actor, playing everyone from a Nazi colonel to the pope to Dustin Hoffman's would-be suitor in "Tootsie."
Durning, who died Monday at age 89 in New York, got his start as an usher at a burlesque theater in Buffalo, N.Y. When one of the comedians showed up too drunk to go on, Durning took his place. He would recall years later that he was hooked as soon as he heard the audience laughing.
He told The Associated Press in 2008 that he had no plans to stop working. "They're going to carry me out, if I go," he said.

We're lucky enough to have a wonderful new Bond theme song for "Skyfall," compliments of Adele, but as we look back on the series and its themes, we can't help but notice that some of the best songs have been from other movies and some TV shows.
As we kick off a week of some serious "Skyfall" coverage on all things Bond, we thought we'd take a look at some of the best fake James Bond theme songs.
Check out our list after the jump!
"Brian Song" from "Monty Python's Life of Brian"
The opening credits from this Python classic also includes animation from Terry Gilliam.

They Might Be Giants laid down this track for the second Mike Myers Bond parody that lovingly riffed on the Shirley Bassey themes.

The Starving Games – it’s like The Hunger Games went wrong or something like that. C’mon, you must admit this title sounds great! Date Movie writers and directors Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer are bringing us the completely new spoof, and as you already see – Brant Daugherty (best known from Pretty Little Liars) is on board to star as the lead.
So, Friedberg and Seltzer are writing and directing the comedy, which will (obviously) center on Daughtery’s character, a brooding teen heartthrob in the mold of Liam Hemsworth‘s character Gale in The Hunger Games.
As Variety reports, Peter Safran of The Safran Company is producing the parody pic, which will also take aim at The Avengers, Sherlock Holmes and the finale of the Harry Potter franchise.

James Bond's gadgets, girls and spying skills have been parodied many times before, but that's not stopping Borat alter-ego Sacha Baron Cohen from writing yet another 007-skewering script.Working with Cedar Rapids scribe Phil Johnston, Paramount has commissioned the screenplay around the idea of a British superspy “...forced to go on the run with his long-lost brother, a moronic soccer hooligan” – From Russia With Nick Love? Danny Dyer 'Nother Day? – which may or may not see Baron Cohen starring, depending on his schedule. Following in the footsteps of In Like Flint, Get Smart, Austin Powers: International Man Of Mystery, Spy Hard, Carry On Spying and many, many more, it's a well-mined vein of comedy gold, but with Baron Cohen at the wheel, it's a safe bet this one won't be as pedestrian as, say, Johnny English Reborn.Incidentally, Johnston has also written a few words for Disney's upcoming video game family feature,...

Phew, I’m glad someone is finally spoofing secret agents! Variety reports that Paramount Pictures have bought a pitch for a new spy spoof from comedy star Sacha Baron Cohen and writer Phil Johnston. The movie will follow a spy who has to go on the run with his long-lost soccer hooligan brother. The spy in question is said to resemble a certain martini-loving British agent who makes his return to the silver screen in November, but will obviously not be him because Paramount doesn’t own the rights.
Now armed with a low six-figure sum from the studio, Cohen and Johnston will now set out to write the script and like the Variety article also states, don’t be surprised if Cohen either stars or co-stars in the movie given his track record. Johnston’s next movie, the animated ode to video games Wreck-It Ralph, is due to bow...

Andy Griffith, the likable and versatile star who famously played a small town sheriff in The Andy Griffith Show, has died. He was 86 years old.

Andy Griffith died on Tuesday at his California home at the age of 86. Though the late actor was most famous for his roles on television shows like "Matlock" and, fittingly, "The Andy Griffith Show," he made his splash in Hollywood with "A Face in the Crowd." The 1957 film was Griffith's big-screen debut.
Directed by the legendary Elia Kazan, "A Face in the Crowd" told the story of a charismatic country man, Lonesome Rhodes (Griffith), who gets plucked from obscurity by a local radio show producer and becomes a media sensation and political pundit. While "A Face in the Crowd" received mixed reviews upon its release, the decades since have been kind to the film -- especially with how it relates to the current cable news climate. Glenn Beck has been compared to Griffith's Lonesome Rhodes on more than one occasion.
