David Schwimmer revealed the reason why he turned down Will Smith‘s role in Men In Black back in 1997.
While on Cush Jumbo‘s Origins podcast, he was asked if he turned it down because of the Friends production schedule, he said, “That’s not why I turned it down.”

He then explained, “[It] was a brutal decision. I had just finished filming The Pallbearer, my first film with Gwyneth Paltrow, and there were high expectations of that which didn’t come true. It was kind of a bomb but there were high expectations and the studio which was Miramax wanted to lock me into a three-picture deal at a fixed price and I said I would do that if I got to direct my first movie. Actor David Schwimmer recently discussed a pivotal career choice he made in the late 1990s. He had to pick between taking on a major role in the sci-fi blockbuster “Men in Black” or pursuing his dream of becoming a director. Schwimmer chose to direct his first film instead of starring alongside Will Smith. In hindsight, Schwimmer questions if that was the right call.
At the time, Schwimmer had just finished his role in the 1996 comedy “The Pallbearer.” He was ready to direct “Since You’ve Been Gone,” a movie featuring performers from his Chicago theater company. However, Schwimmer was also offered the starring role in “Men in Black,” which was set to start filming during his break from “Friends.”
This presented Schwimmer with a difficult decision. All of his theater friends had quit their jobs to act in “Since You’ve Been Gone.” Schwimmer felt committed to making his directorial debut with them.

David Schwimmer can’t help but wonder how different his life would have been as Agent D.
The Friends alum recalled the “brutal decision” of turning down a role in 1997’s Men in Black, which ultimately starred Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, as he questioned if he “made the right choice” in passing up the franchise.
He explained on the Origins with Cush Jumbo podcast that the opportunity came after his role alongside Gwyneth Paltrow in 1996’s The Pallbearer, which paved the way for his 1998 directorial debut Since You’ve Been Gone, featuring actors from his Lookingglass Theatre Company.

David Schwimmer recently said on the “Origins with Cush Jumbo” podcast that he’s well aware how different his career would have been had he not rejected the offer to lead 1997’s “Men in Black.” The actor’s popularity was skyrocketing at the time as he was a few seasons into “Friends.” He decided to direct his own movie instead of acting in “Men in Black.”

In an alternate timeline somewhere, "Men in Black" may have led to the blockbuster leading man career of "Friends" star David Schwimmer instead of Oscar-winner Will Smith. Stories about Schwimmer's near-casting in the first "Men in Black" film have been around for years. However, during his appearance this week on the podcast "Origins With Cush Jumbo" (via The Hollywood Reporter), Schwimmer explained more fully why he ended up picking a different project over the hit sci-fi action-comedy.
"[It] was a brutal decision," the actor admitted to Jumbo, noting that a lot more went into his decision to decline the Agent J role than his tight "Friends" shooting schedule. "I had just finished filming 'The Pallbearer,' my first film with Gwyneth Paltrow, and there were high expectations of that which didn't come true," Schwimmer told the host with a laugh. David Schwimmer doesn’t regret turning down Men in Black, however, he acknowledges his “career would have taken a very different trajectory” if he starred in the 1997 film.

Once upon a time, David Schwimmer was offered the leading role in Men in Black. He turned it down. Will Smith wound up taking on the role, and the film helped propel him to superstar status while Schwimmer was left toiling in one of the most popular sitcoms of all time.
While speaking on the Origins with Cush Jumbo podcast (thanks to IndieWire), Schwimmer reflected on turning down Men in Black and explained why he made the choice he did. The actor was in the midst of starring in Friends at the time, but he would have been able to fit in Men in Black during his summer hiatus. Instead, he chose to honour his commitment to what would become his feature directorial debut.

2017-02-23T14:14:56-08:00'Cloverfield' Director to Helm New Batman Movie
Since Ben Affleck quit his job as director of the upcoming Batman movie last month, speculation has been rampant over who would replace him at the helm of this critical installment in the DC cinematic universe. This week we got confirmation that one of the reported front-runners for the job will, indeed, be taking over directorial duties.
The job now belongs to Matt Reeves, whose early career included co-writing and directing credits on the Gwyneth Paltrow/David Schwimmer rom-com The Pallbearer. That project was produced, believe it or not, by Jj Abrams, and Abrams and Reeves would eventually team up to create Felicity for The WB.
Reeves made his biggest initial splash directing 2008's Cloverfield, and he went on to direct Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. He's also working on the follow-up to that film,...

Before he hit big with Star Wars and Star Trek, Jj Abrams was penning films such as Forever Young, Regarding Henry and Armageddon...
Jj Abrams is one of the most powerful people in Hollywood right now. Over his career in the movies, he's written, directed, produced, acted and played a wicked keyboard solo on Cool Guys Don't Look At Explosions, and through his production company Bad Robot, his name is counted among the credits of massive franchises like Cloverfield, Mission: Impossible, Star Trek and of course Star Wars. He's more of a household name than most filmmakers of his generation and we sometimes wish we wanted anything as much as he wants that Steven Spielberg status.

Let us weave you a tale of loyalty and heartbreak, about the time David Schwimmer wasn’t able to do Men In Black. The actor recounted the saga on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, and the story goes something like this: During Schwimmer’s Friends tenure, he made a Miramax rom-com called The Pallbearer, opposite Gwyneth Paltrow. The studio mistakenly foresaw greatness and wanted to sign Schwimmer to a three-picture deal. Being a wily fellow, Schwimmer negotiated that he would only sign on to that if they allow him to direct and cast his Chicago theater buddies, and he got his wish.
Turns out, however, that production on that movie conflicted with Men In Black, and ol’ Schwims had to say no to the blockbuster in order to honor his commitment to his friends. You see, he’ll be there for you/them: “I just said, I can...

Will Smith’s role in Men In Black was first offered to David Schwimmer, but he turned it down to support his friends...
One of the many curious footnotes in Hollywood history is that Will Smith’s leading role in Men In Black was first offered to David Schwimmer. The 1997 film that catapulted the Fresh Prince star to global super stardom was Schwimmer’s for the taking, and it lined up perfectly with a between-seasons production break on Friends.
So why did Schwimmer turn it down? He’s now explained the decision in detail in conversation with The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast host Scott Feinberg. Here’s the story, as Schwimmer regaled it...
The deal with that was: so I had shot The Pallbearer [a romantic comedy co-starring Gwyneth Paltrow] for Miramax, and they had very high hopes for it. And while we were shooting it, they wanted to lock me into a three-picture deal.

With rumours flying about a new Indiana Jones and Disney reportedly closing in on their final choices for Jj Abrams' Star Wars: Episode VII, the Hollywood casting machine is operating at an even higher temperature than usual.
You'll be familiar with some of these near-misses, but others are frankly astonishing. Which rapper almost took Matt Damon's role in Elysium? Which former Friends star was the first choice to front Men in Black? And why is Leonardo DiCaprio Christian Bale's nemesis? Read on...

Pacino revealed during a Q&A session last year that the role of roguish smuggler Han Solo was "his for the taking" back in the '70s, but he turned it down because he didn't understand the script. Harrison Ford made the role iconic and ended up having his own issues with Lucas's script, famously telling the director "You can type this s**t,...

Aaron Paul became a critically acclaimed actor while appearing in a recurring role on the television series Big Love and earned even more praise – and won two Emmy Awards – for his starring role on Breaking Bad. So why is it that the movie Need for Speed, which starred Paul, underperformed in U.S. theaters this past weekend?
Just because Paul is an award-winning actor on television does not mean audiences were going to pack the theaters to see his movie. In fact, there is a long history of wildly popular television stars who fail in their attempt to transition to movie stardom. In many cases, these TV stars made poor choices when it came to film roles. In other instances, viewers simply had no interest in seeing these actors play anything else but their beloved TV characters.

Disaster mini-series Ring of Fire premieres on Reelz in just a couple of days and it stars the talented and good-looking television-movie actor, Michael Vartan. While Vartan is probably most well-known for his role as Michael Vaughn in hit TV series Alias, he has also starred alongside Gwyneth Paltrow and David Schwimmer in The Pallbearer, Jennifer Lopez in Monster-in-Law and Robin Williams in One Hour Photo. He also played charming English teacher to Drew Barrymore in the 1999 romantic-comedy Never Been Kissed, making most of the female population fall over in the process. But while the actor may have proven his talents for teaching and the ability to shoot a gun or two, how will he fare when tasked with saving the world from extinction? We can’t think of anything not to like about the gorgeous French-American star but to keep our faith in his world saving abilities we have...

Exclusive: Friday Night Lights and Parenthood developer/executive producer Jason Katims is returning to his comedy roots with About A Boy, a single-camera comedy based on the Nick Hornby book and 2002 movie. NBC has bought the project, from Katims’ True Jack Prods; Universal TV; and Working Title and Tribeca Prods, the companies that produced the Hugh Grant-starring feature. Written and executive produced by Emmy-winner Katims, About A Boy follows the relationship between a bachelor man-child and the young boy who moves in next door with his kooky single mother. Katims’ head of development, Michelle Lee, will serve as producer. This is the second stab at developing About A Boy as a comedy series. In 2003, Fox ordered a presentation written by Matthew Carlson, directed by Ken Kwapis and starring Patrick Dempsey. This marks the third sale for Uni TV-based True Jack Prods this season. The first, two — a Katims-penned spy dramedy and an edgy,...

Felicity co-creator Matt Reeves is returning to television with an overall deal at 20th Century Fox TV. Under the pact, Reeves is expected to create, write and direct broadcast and cable projects as well as supervise other writers. Reeves was a feature writer-director (The Pallbearer) when he teamed with J.J. Abrams to co-create Felicity, which helped put the WB on the map. Since the end of the series in 2002, he has only directed two drama pilots — ABC’s Miracles and NBC’s Dick Wolf series Conviction – focusing his attention on features including directing the Abrams-produced sleeper hit Cloverfield and writing and directing Let Me In. 20th TV chairman Gary Newman said Reeves “has been one of the top 2-3 drama director names every pilot season that every studio goes to with their best projects.” Reeves had resisted returning to TV until now. “This is an incredibly exciting time in the...

Let Me In may star two extremely talented child actors, but it is definitely not a movie for kids. Director Matt Reeves doesn’t pull any punches in this violent remake of the acclaimed Swedish vampire film, Let the Right One In.
Let Me In delves deep into the somewhat troubled psyches of two young people in New Mexico during the early 80′s. The boy, Owen, is severly bullied at school and spends most of his time by himself. Then he meets Abby, a mysterious girl who moves into his apartment building. They gradually become friends, but the fact that she’s a vampire severely complicates the whole situation.
Keep in mind that this is a review of Let Me In alone. I intentionally avoided seeing Let the Right One In in order to go into the remake completely fresh.
The core of the film is the relationship between Abby and Owen.

During my visit to Fantastic Fest in Austin Texas, I got an opportunity to sit down with filmmaker Matt Reeves. After graduating from the University of Southern California, Reeves co-wrote a script that eventually became Under Siege 2: Dark Territory and made his feature directorial debut with The Pallbearer. The film screened at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section but went on to make only $5.6 million domestically, delaying Reeves chances at a feature film career. Reeves used this time to co-create the television series Felicity with his friend Jj Abrams, whom he met at age 13 while they were both screening short films on a cable public access channel. In addition to writing, Reeves directed a handful of Felicity episodes including the pilot. He later got a opportunity to break out of "director's jail" with the Abrams-produced monster movie Cloverfield, which was a big hit. His ...

Matt Reeves has to be breathing at least half a sigh of relief at the moment. The filmmaker has had a scattershot career helming the dramedy "The Pallbearer" and the shaky sci-fi epic "Cloverfield," but up until now his biggest achievement was probably co-creating and directing the pilot for "Felicity." That all changed after the initial reviews came in for "Let Me In," Overture and Hammer Films' English language remake of 2008's "Let The Right One In." Retelling what is already recognized as a modern classic is a daunting task, but as critics have noted, Reeves has accomplished the rare feat...

Let Me In is a remake, re-hash, transfusion, re-imagined, re-whatever of the Swedish classic, Let The Right One In. People are very weary of this production, but the two promo posters have been very well done indeed. This new one, especially.
This latest stab of American ‘film’ blasphemy (only joking … kind of) has been directed by Matt Reeves ‘director of Cloverfield’ although he directed The Pallbearer, too … you know, that mid-1990s movie with David Schwimmer.

Bloody snow! That’s what Londoners were exclaiming earlier this year – and the year before – after a cold snap seemed portent to the end of the known world and we’d be thrust into a Roland Emmerich movie about destruction and really cool CGI.
The reason I mention ‘bloody snow’ is it’s very much there – literally – in the first poster for Matt Reeves’ Let Me In. A remake, re-hash, re-blood, re-imagined, re-whatever of the Swedish classic, Let The Right One In.
They’ve wisely gone with ‘Director of Cloverfield’ and not ‘Director of The Pallbearer … you know, that mid-1990s movie with David Schwimmer’.
Synopsis:
Let Me In, a haunting and provocative thriller written and directed by filmmaker Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) and produced by legendary British horror brand Hammer Films, is an astonishing coming-of-age story between a young girl and an alienated young boy unlike any other you have seen.

It looks like Matt Reeves is coming out on the offensive regarding Let Me In, his remake of Swedish vampire thriller Let the Right One In, and he has to be: the backlash from fans of the original has been vitriolic. Even I had my doubts about an Americanized remake of such a stylish and unique horror film – but Reeves’ recent interview with the L.A. Times (where this new image comes from) has satiated my fears somewhat.
What surprised me reading the L.A. Times piece was the revelation that Reeves was actually responsible for the incredibly black David Schwimmer-starring comedy The Pallbearer, which is a Long way from the big budget extravaganza the was Cloverfield… Says Reeves:
I think because of ‘Cloverfield,’ people have an assumption, which is, ‘Oh, crazy handicam, he’s going to jazz it up,’ And I think that’s probably what a lot...

"Cloverfield" director Matt Reeves has signed to write and direct the horror remake "Let the Right One In" for Overture Films and Hammer Films.
The Swedish horror film, "Lat den ratte komma in," about a bullied boy whose desire for revenge becomes intertwined with his growing love for a girl who happens to be a vampire, began showing at festivals at the beginning of the year. Hammer Films picked up the remake rights in May after the film won the best narrative feature award at the Tribeca Film Festival.
The original film's source material is a bestselling novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist.
"I was immediately taken by both the novel and the Swedish film of 'Let the Right One In,' which are just so unique," Reeves said. "I found them not only terrifying but incredibly moving, and I am very excited about adapting them into an American context."
