Absolute Batman is the latest reimagining of the Caped Crusader as a physically massive hero with no money, no butler, but one of his parents. You can read my reviews of issue one, two, and three, at the respective links. In issue four, we get a shortened Year One style of story for the hero. While it’s interesting, I feel as if it gets in the way of a story that was finally starting to build serious momentum.
Spoilers for Absolute Batman #4 below.
In this issue, Bruce Wayne is given the opportunity to confront Joe Chill, the man who killed his father, before he is tried in court. The scene is broken up into several parts intersected with other plot points, but Bruce’s message for Chill is essentially this: Bruce was the happiest he’d ever been before Chill killed his father, he will never be that happy again,...

One of Batman's most chilling villains is about to make his debut in the wild Absolute Universe. Since DC All In began, the Absolute line of comics has updated several of DC's biggest heroes and villains, and Batman's world is no exception.
Darkseid's death has led to a world where things are harder than ever for the heroes. The Absolute version of the Dark Knight has had his hands full, with both new villains like the Party Animals and a more extreme version of Black Mask. But Absolute Batman writer Scott Snyder looks to the future and reveals what he has planned for the Absolute reinvention of Mr. Freeze.

Warning: This list contains discussion of extreme violence and sexual assault.
Heroes are nothing without their villains, and that is especially true under the DC Comics banner. How much the audience loves its protagonist is often decided by how much it hates the antagonist. When it comes to the "heels" of DC, they offer plenty of reasons for readers to hate them.
DC Comics has a tendency to go darker than its superhero universe counterparts, and that darkness offers more opportunity to deliver stories where the villains can be downright despicable. Rather than just plant bombs or indulge in cartoonish plots, DC's villains often commit despicable, even disgusting acts of villainy. Batman's rogues gallery alone is a threat to the entire DC Universe, but the universe at large is filled with grimy evildoers who have committed crimes that would make anyone clutch their pearls.

Marvel was a wild place for comics in the ‘90s, with Spider-Man getting his fair share of events that were amped up to eleven thanks to the decade’s inherently over-the-top and extreme nature, mainly stemming from his infamous Clone Saga and the unexpected debut of Peter Parker’s double, Ben Reilly, as Spider-Man. Thanks to the talent of the cosplay community, Ben Reilly’s brush with the Carnage symbiote has been given the live-action treatment in a way that begs to be explored on the silver screen.

The DC Extended Universe reached what proved to be an underwhelming end in 2023 with a series of critical and commercial flops. If nothing else, it died just as it lived (a disappointment).
The Dceu certainly wasn't all bad, of course, and Warner Bros. had a lot of good ideas over the years...most of which sadly never came to fruition. There are any number of reasons for that but as DC Studios and James Gunn continue fleshing out the new Dcu, a handful are of those definitely worth revisiting.
In this feature, we take a look back at some of the movies that failed to become a reality and explore how they could be reimagined for the Dcu. That could be in live-action, animation, in theaters, or on streaming; they all deserve a second chance, though.

Many iconic DC villains graced the screen in Batman: The Animated Series, but there were also numerous villains left on the cutting room floor. Some were deemed too dark, others simply didnt fit the tone of the DC show, and a few were outright vetoed by the studio. However, creators Bruce Timm and Paul Dini have revealed fascinating behind-the-scenes details about these unused characters. Theyve also speculated on who would have voiced them if they had made it into the series.
The creative team behind Batman: The Animated Series included Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and a stellar roster of writers and directors who redefined the Dark Knights rogues' gallery for Batman: Tas. Timm and Dini, in particular, often share behind-the-scenes tidbits through interviews and fan sites like The Worlds Finest. Theyve revealed details about villains who almost appeared on the show, how likely their inclusion was, and the actors they envisioned for these roles.

The second issue of Absolute Batman went on sale today and the series continues to redefine the Caped Crusader.
It opens with a young Bruce Wayne being enveloped by bats moments after his father was gunned down. In the present, Batman is waging war on Black Mask's twisted Party Animals and continues to use near-lethal methods to take down his foes.
That includes breaking an aquarium tank and using a chemically concentrated version of vinegar to turn the water into hydrochloric acid, burning off the skin and feet of the villains.
Alfred Pennyworth observes all of this and figures out that his bases - or "caves" - beneath Gotham make the shape of a bat. His employers force him to remove the protection placed on Batman, but not to be fooled, he sets a trap for them...that's appropriately bat-themed.
Alfred also learns that Bruce Wayne has visited his father's killer,...

DC Comics' brand-new Absolute Universe has already gotten off to an incredible start, taking classic heroes and subverting their conventions in daring ways. From a working-class Batman to a Superman without the Kent family, each character differs from their normal status quo. The DC Universe is changing, and so too is its power-scaling.
The Absolute Universe is much darker than DC's main universe. Born from Darkseid's energy as opposed to Superman's, the heroes in this continuity find themselves without the advantages they've historically relied on, forced to fight twice as hard to prove themselves. Though it's too early to say for certain how these fighters would all fare against each other in battle, here's a ranking of the 10 most powerful characters in DC's Absolute Universe so far.

DC Comics has launched its own version of Marvel's Ultimate Universe with its Absolute line of comics, and Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta kicked that off in style with today's Absolute Batman #1.
The issue opens with Alfred Pennyworth arriving in Gotham City; he appears to be a secret agent of some sort and has been sent home to assess the threat posed by the "Party Animals" crime gang. His motorbike is stolen and his daughter, Julia, wants nothing to do with him.
A bulked-up Bruce Wayne is found working out in Croc's Gym. Run by Waylon Jones (Killer Croc in the main DC Universe), we learn he went to school with Eddie, Harvey, Oz, and Selina, characters who are now his friends and allies rather than Batman's greatest enemies.

Red Hood and Black Mask's banter is unparalleled, showcasing wit and hostility in a way that is both entertaining and unique. Their equal strength as characters makes their dynamic strong, with distinct voices that enhance their rivalry in comics. DC needs to bring back Red Hood and Black Mask's rivalry, as their chemistry offers a wealth of untapped narrative possibilities.
I am utterly convinced that DC has forgotten about its best 'hero'/villain rivalryRed Hood and Black Maskgiven how little they utilize the two characters. While some might consider this a controversial choice for the top spot in 'DCs best rivalry,' I firmly believe there is no better pair. Jason and Roman's interactions are some of the most chemistry-filled and funniest in comics, and they are long overdue for a return.

Batman: Caped Crusader, the latest animated interpretation of DC’s Dark Knight, embraces the pulpy horror theatrics of EC Comics.
“And you don’t know how to catch a ghost.”
“Before today, I didn’t believe they existed.”
One of superhero media’s greatest luxuries is that it’s an exaggerated genre that frequently toes the line with other styles of story. It’s not unusual for a superhero series to become a political thriller, fantastical rom-com, or epic spaghetti western based on the specific characters who are in play. Batman, in particular, is a classic DC Comics character who’s frequently steeped in dark ideas and he’s someone who’s a natural fit for the horror genre. Each cinematic Batman offering features some degree of horror, even the neon-colored Joel Schumacher entries, and there is no shortage of horror-blending comic stories between Batman: Night Cries, Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth,...

Pulp Fiction's title pays homage to old, violent, and provocative pulp magazines popular in the late 19th to mid-20th centuries. Tarantino's non-linear storytelling and cultural impact set Pulp Fiction apart, cementing its status as a revolutionary masterpiece. Despite the enigmatic title, Pulp Fiction's success, critical acclaim, and influence on cinema make it a remarkable directorial achievement.
Although Pulp Fiction might be Quentin Tarantinos most iconic movie ever, the movie never explains its enigmatic title within the film itself. It would be tough to name a 90s movie more influential than director Quentin Tarantinos crime epic Pulp Fiction. Much like director Francis Ford Coppolas The Godfather set the tone for 70s cinema, Pulp Fiction provided the building blocks for the decades indie output. DiCaprio's versatility and talent make him a prime candidate for iconic DC roles like Black Mask, Mr. Freeze, and Jonah Hex. His ability to embody complex characters with depth and nuance would elevate characters like Thomas Wayne and The Question in the DC Universe. DiCaprio's experience portraying morally ambiguous and vengeful characters aligns perfectly with the layered personalities of characters like Hush and Deadshot.
Leonardo DiCaprio seems unlikely to star in a comic book movie, but there are some DC Universe roles that he might struggle to decline. There have been many calls for renowned actor Leonardo DiCaprio to star in a comic book movie, but his previous comments on the genre make this improbable. DiCaprio reportedly warned Timothée Chalamet not to make superhero movies, and has turned down several comic book roles. However, there are a number DC characters that would prove far harder for him to pass up on.

Joker: Folie à deux offers a fresh take on Joker's origin, blending drama, psychological thrills, and musical numbers in a unique superhero genre twist. Lady Gaga joins Joaquin Phoenix's Joker in the sequel, promising 15 cover songs and dark musical sequences, unlike anything seen before in DC films. Birds of Prey pays homage to classic Hollywood musicals with a hallucination sequence featuring Harley Quinn lip-singing "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend," showcasing striking visuals and character depth.

Joker surprised audiences with a dramatic, psychological thriller exploring the Joker's origins, providing an intriguing angle within the superhero genre. The film earned some divided reactions but was a huge hit with critics, earning 11 Academy Award nominations, including two wins for Best Original Score and Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix.

Once upon a time there was a film industry that wasn't dominated by the comic book behemoths of D.C. and Marvel. Where a comic book style movie felt fresh, innovative and where the Hong Kong production line hadn't been stripped bare in the service of mainland blockbusters with a patriotic core. “Black Mask” in many respects is a last hurrah of an industry about to go through immense change. As Eureka Entertainment bring it to blu-ray, it's time to revisit this Frankenstein's monster of a collaborative effort between several unique talents.

Eureka Entertainment announced today that they will be releasing Jet Li’s martial arts extravaganza Black Mask on Blu-ray on April 23rd.
Influenced by Bruce Lee’s role as Kato in The Green Hornet, Black Mask stars Jet Li as Tsui Chik, “a librarian who leads a quiet, unassuming life – or, at least, that’s what he wants people to believe. In truth, he was once a member of the 701 Squad, a group of elite combatants produced by a failed super-soldier project. In-kind with his former comrades, his central nervous system has been altered to render him impervious to pain. When several of his fellow test subjects resurface and embark on a crimewave under the leadership of their former commander Hung Kuk (Patrick Lung), Tsui is forced to use his extraordinary abilities once more. Donning a costume, he sets out to face his past – as the vigilante known as the Black Mask.

Black Mask's portrayal in the Dceu was hit-or-miss for fans, but a new cosplay brings out his true terrifying nature. Cosplayer Brad Johnson and digital artist Soumik create a visually dangerous and stylish version of Black Mask. Black Mask's next live-action look should draw inspiration from this cosplay to highlight the character's inherent terror.
The Dceu has finally come to an end, with Black Mask’s only big screen appearance being a hit-or-miss portrayal for fans of this iconic Batman-related character. Leave it up to the cosplay community to make up for it, however, because a new set of images has brought Black Mask’s more terrifying nature to light as the brutal underworld villain he is, making this the real-world design the live-action space needs to beat.

In the Dceu, many villains lack compelling backstories and depth, with a focus on team-up movies rather than individual character development. Some villains like Cheetah and Starro stand out as well-developed, but classic villains have been poorly inducted into the Dceu. Villains like Black Mask, Maxwell Lord, Dark Flash, Steppenwolf, Lex Luthor, Enchantress, Doomsday, Dr. Sivana, Harley Quinn, and Black Manta suffer from underdeveloped or confusing origins, hindering their impact as antagonists.
The Dceu is fraught with villains with less-than-compelling backstories, with much of the series' rogues gallery failing to garner depth or sympathy. As more and more heroes were introduced into the DC cinematic universe, many of the franchise's films were expected to pull double-duty, providing origins for not only its heroes, but their antagonists as well. In reality, most of the Dceu movies didn't shake out this way, introducing multiple important players at once in team-up movies rather...

DC movie adaptations have often seen actors inject their own ideas and quirks, resulting in instant iconic and improved scenes. Notable unscripted moments in DC films include Jack Nicholson ad-libbing a silly moment as The Joker in Batman (1989) and Ewan McGregor ad-libbing lines for Black Mask in Birds of Prey. Improvised moments by actors like Joaquin Phoenix, Ben Affleck, Zachary Levi, Ezra Miller, Henry Cavill, and Gal Gadot have added humor and emotional depth to DC films.

The writers and actors strike is getting a boost from the comics world and a new superhero named General Strike.
Indie publisher Black Mask Studios, run by Matteo Pizzolo, is putting together a comics anthology that will be written by WGA members with the company matching the writers’ fees with donations to the safety net organization Entertainment Community Fund.
The announcement comes as the writers strike hits its 100th day. No new contract talks are scheduled to begin any time soon.
Titled General Stike: Calexit and Other Tales of Fighting the Good Fight, the collection of new stories has the theme of confronting economic inequality and, like any good superhero story, featuring new characters fighting the good fight against injustice. A bubblegum-chewing, labor-organizing character named General Strike will act as the host of the comic, threading the stories together.
The book is in pre-launch mode on Kickstarter now, with an official launch set for Aug.

The book is in pre-launch mode on Kickstarter now, with an official launch set for Aug.

Margot Robbie‘s Harley Quinn sure knows how to round up a group.
The standout from 2016’s Suicide Squad returns for her own film, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) — and she’s got a few friends this time.
A new trailer for the highly-anticipated film starts with Robbie’s Quinn relationship with Jared Leto‘s Joker ending under fiery circumstances. After some crying, she’s ready to face the world on her own.

How are you holding up, Harley Quinn fans? Birds of Prey is now under a month away from smashing into cinemas and with its release right around the corner, Warner Bros. has dropped a new trailer for Margot Robbie’s second outing as the Clown Princess of Crime which teases more of what we can expect from this wacky, female-fronted ensemble action movie.
With the subtitle (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), naturally the former Dr. Quinzel is the star of the film, with Robbie stealing the spotlight in the bulk of the marketing. However, Harley won’t be on her own, as she’ll form an all-female team to make their mark on Gotham City.
Robbie is joined by Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Helena Bertinelli/Huntress, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya and Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Dinah Lance/Black Canary. You can even get a glimpse of Dinah...

Warner Bros.’ upcoming Birds of Prey is starting to make serious waves and it’s still over a month away away from reaching theaters. That’s mostly because the blockbuster will be the first major superhero movie to have prominent Lgbt representation amongst several of its main characters.
Of course, the biggest one will be Black Mask, the primary antagonist of the film. From what we understand, his sexuality won’t be explicitly stated, but it’s been said that there will be very clear sexual tension between him and fellow baddie Victor Zsasz, while the promotion for the pic so far has also strongly hinted that he’s quite the flamboyant character. But apparently, Warner Bros. has now made a bit of a change.

Marvel’s hard at work making sure that they have better representation across the board in the McU moving forward, that much we know. In terms of Lgbt characters, Avengers: Endgame began to pave the way with Joe Russo’s small role. And while it wasn’t much, it was at least a positive step in the right direction.
Of course, Phase 4 will be taking much greater strides in this regard, with Thor: Love and Thunder hoping to establish Valkyrie’s sexuality as she looks for a queen and one of the main characters in The Eternals set to be gay and shown with a husband and children. And the studio isn’t stopping there, either, as Phase 5 will also bring about some representation and possibly the strongest form of it yet, as Marvel’s reportedly going to have two McU heroes come out.

We visited the Birds of Prey set and talked to Margot Robbie about the more "contained" stakes of the Dcu movie.
From Avengers: Endgame to Crisis On Infinite Earths, so many of our comic book stories deal with unimaginably high stakes. Frankly, it doesn't seem possible to raise the stakes any higher than the aformentioned superhero stories have, and that isn't a bad thing—hopefully, it will encourage comic book movies to consider lower stakes. Logan, one of the best comic book adaptations of the last decade, proved how effective and universal a story you can tell with relatively small stakes.
Birds of Prey is a spin-off from Suicide Squad, a film that loaded up its anti-heroes' mission with humanity-ending stakes, but this girl gang movie is intentionally looking to do something much different.

We’ll cut to the chase. The extremely 1980s first trailer for “Wonder Woman 1984” just dropped, and you can watch it above right now.
In the clip, which by the way makes fantastic use of New Order’s “Blue Monday,” we see a bit of where Diana Prince/Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) is nearly 70 years after defeating Ares during World War 1. Via an interview being conducted by Kristen Wiig’s Barbara Minerva, we learn she’s a publicly known superhero and a celebrity — pretty much confirming Warner Bros. is ignoring “Batman v Superman” and “Justice League” moving forward — but very lonely having never filled the void left behind by the death of Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) all those years ago.
From there we get a glimpse of America at the height of the Reagan era; huge malls, flashy celebrity stuff, successful businessmen who are basically jumped up con artists,...

Get ready to feel slightly bad about the hours you’ve spent slaughtering video game characters. At Comic Con Experience Brazil, Ryan Reynolds debuted the first trailer for what he called “my favorite movie I ever made,” his upcoming new action comedy “Free Guy.” Watch it here right now.

‘The Boys': Homelander Is Really Bloody (and Probably Still a Jerk) in First Season 2 Teaser (Video)
It looks like “f— supes” will very much still be in effect when “The Boys” returns next year, judging from the first Season 2 teaser anyway. Amazon unveiled the footage Friday for attendees at Comic Con Experience Brazil, and you can see it — and a very, very bloody Homelander — for yourself at the top of the page right now.
The clip begins with a silent shot of Homelander (Antony Starr) descending to the ground with a blank, freaked out look on his face — and also blood, a ton of blood. We see what appears to be the beginning of a face off with Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) and the rest of The Boys, before things transition to a sizzle reel of various scenes from the upcoming season. Yes there’s plenty of Superheroes acting like celebrity douchebags, and also a surprisingly huge amount of blood. Like, really, a lot.

We visited the Birds of Prey set to talk to Harley Quinn herself, Margot Robbie, about the future of the Dcu.
In this age of superhero movie storytelling, the lone (male) protagonist continues to rule. While we’ve begun to see the occasional outlier from the “Chosen One” template that makes up a disproportionate amount of Hollywood's tentpole storytelling, it’s still quite rare to find a mainstream movie that goes with a truly ensemble story rather than something more individualistic in its cinematic philosophy.
In a culture so saturated with that mindset, it can be difficult to articulate what this norm looks like or to imagine other kinds of storytelling, but it's my job to try! For a superhero film (a term used here to describe all comic book movie adaptations from fictional worlds that include superheroes) to truly defy the “Chosen One” structure, there can...

Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and her new friends will be facing off against a classic Batman foe in Birds of Prey. Ewan McGregor will be bringing Roman Sionis Aka Black Mask to the big screen for the first time in the movie, with the Star Wars actor looking to put his own spin on the comic book character. We’ve got a flavor of the British star’s flamboyant performance from the trailers so far and now, McGregor has teased a few new details about the villain.
As part of Men’s Journal‘s cover story on him, the star called Black Mask the perfect antagonist for “the time of Trump.” It’s easy to see what he means as well by the following description he gave of his character:

Grant Morrison has been unfairly overlooked when it comes to live-action adaptations. In an era where pretty much every major comic book writer has had a lavishly budgeted big screen realization of their work, he’s been left behind. That’s particularly frustrating given that for almost three decades he was putting out some of the most exciting and interesting superhero comics around.
Where’s my Final Crisis adaptation, or Batman Rip, or Animal Man? Being someone who didn’t quite know what to think about the upcoming Birds of Prey movie, I was pleased to find the first full trailer that debuted earlier today rather impressive. If anything, we’ve been given the impression that Cathy Yan’s foray into the DC Universe will be highly entertaining and in keeping with Harley Quinn’s brand of irreverent humor.
Still, it’s hard for me to shake how none of the characters featured actually resemble their comic book counterparts, but I’ll probably get over it (for the most part) if the movie itself lives up to the hype. That said, I’m right there with those of you who are perplexed by how Black Mask doesn’t actually where, you know, a mask of any sort. Perhaps he’ll gain one before the movie is over. I don’t know. But fingers remain crossed.

The Chinese mountain-climbing adventure “The Climbers” works best when it’s an old-fashioned macho melodrama about the hardships faced by the first mountaineering team to document their summit of Mount Everest’s treacherous North-side in 1975.
In these scenes, writer-director Daniel Lee (“Black Mask”) and his colleagues deliver a less flamboyant but equally nationalistic mountain-climbing answer to “Top Gun,” one that’s mostly focused on the camaraderie and heartbreak that the (predominantly male) National Mountaineering Team faces whenever their stubborn but resourceful leaders Wuzhou Fang and Qu Songlin (Zhang Yi) press on in the face of avalanches, snow drifts, and other killer weather conditions.
Most action set pieces — which are the movie’s biggest selling point, given its IMAX presentation here in America — are marred by cheap-looking computer graphics and image-compositing, especially whenever the mountaineering team is super-imposed on the side of Everest during helicopter or crane shots. But impressive sound design,...

At long last, the first full-length trailer for “Birds of Prey,” featuring Margot Robbie’s colorful alter-ego, has made its worldwide debut.
DC Comics released the official trailer for its forthcoming film Tuesday, showing Harley Quinn’s transformation from Joker’s sidekick to leader of the group of antiheroes.
“You know what a harlequin is? A harlequin’s role is to serve. It’s nothin without a master,” Harley Quinn intones in a voiceover.
“No one gives two s—s who we are beyond that,” she continues as she takes a shot.
“The Joker and I broke up,” she explains, “I wanted a fresh start. But it turns out I wasn’t the only dame in Gotham looking for emancipation.”

The first trailer “Birds of Prey,” the superhero and villain team-up film starring Margot Robbie reprising her role of Harley Quinn from “Suicide Squad,” has arrived.
With the full title “Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn,” director Cathy Yan’s film is a colorful, playful and outrageous take on the superhero genre. And while Harley Quinn usually plays the bad girl, “Birds of Prey” now sees her split from the Joker and teaming up with a trio of other female superheroes as they fight to save a young girl from an evil crime lord.
“Do you know what a harlequin is? A harlequin’s role is to serve. It’s nothing without a master. No one gives two sh— who we are without that,” Robbie says in the trailer over a shot at a bar. That’s all about to change as she proves...
