Marvel fans aren't new to the name Gwen Stacy: Spider-Man's first love, whose tragic death shaped his life and relationships for years and decades to come. Gwen Stacy was on the "stays dead" list of Marvel characters for around 50 years—the kind of characters whose deaths are so impactful, resurrecting them would prove a disservice to the continuity. The list used to include the likes of Bucky Barnes and Jason Todd, but nowadays, it seems only the people who died on Spider-Man actually stay dead. So no Uncle Ben, no Captain Stacy, and no Gwen.
Sure, we'll give her an alternate universe revival in the form of Ghost-Spider, but an Earth-616 restoration? Unlikely, right? Until now!

Once Upon a Time puts many unique spins on classic fairy tale characters. Once Upon a Time's concept is creative: the Evil Queen casts a Dark Curse that sends fairy tale characters to Storybrooke, Maine. Snow White and Prince Charming's daughter, Emma Swan, is destined to break this curse when she is 28. Emma arrives in Storybrooke because Henry, her son, finds her. However, the Evil Queen — Regina Mills in Storybrooke — adopted Henry when Emma gave him up at birth. This immediately establishes a complex family tree in Once Upon a Time, containing many surprises, twists, and turns.
And the Evil Queen is not the only character with a new identity in the real world. Marco and Archie Hopper exist: two characters formerly known as Geppetto and Jiminy Cricket from The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi. Another example includes Ashley Boyd, known as the titular character from Charles Perrault's Cendrillon (Cinderella). In fact,...

Long before Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande signed on to star in Wicked, several other big stars were considered for the lead roles in the film adaptation of the book and musical.
According to Variety, Wicked was nearly adapted for the big screen with Ghost and G.I. Jane star Demi Moore considered for the lead role of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. Wicked producer Marc Platt explained that the project had been with Universal for decades before finally making it to the screen in 2024. Platt shared, “I am going to try and get the timeline right if I can remember, but I believe when I became the president of production at Universal, the project was already here. It had been optioned initially by Demi Moore’s company.” Gregory Maguire, author of the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, was reportedly interested...

Dragon Ball Gt is absolutely the most divisive entry of Akira Toriyama’s hit martial arts series. Taking place directly after the events of Dbz’s finale, Gt starts out as a return to form to early Dragon Ball’s more adventure-oriented Journey To The West inspired arcs, before the latter half ends up leaning into the epic action and immeasurable power levels that made Dbz an international icon. This lack of personal identity makes Gt very hit-or-miss among fans. Its earlier arcs are usually heavily criticized, while the latter arcs are at least enjoyed for memorable concepts like SSJ4 and villains like Baby Vegeta.
That mix-match of styles, combined with the fact that Gt isn’t a part of the canonical Dragon Ball storyline, makes it the black sheep of the Dragon Ball franchise. That doesn’t mean Gt is entirely irredeemable, though. There’s a lot to love about the anime,...

Whether it was inventing the "walk-and-talk" camera technique or just remaining one of the best television shows to grace the small screen, The West Wing reveled in doing the unexpected. Case in point, creator and head writer Aaron Sorkin used the yearly holiday episodes common to TV at the time as just a tinsel-studded backdrop against which to examine sociological issues even more piercingly than was the show's custom. Although the White House sets were decorated to the nines with the requisite bright lights and ornamented trees, Sorkin's storylines in these episodes acknowledged the truth that America's capitalist structure is all too happy to ignore: that the winter holidays are far from a unanimously happy time. For as many people who draw joy from the affectations and traditions of Christmas, there are as many or more wounded by them for countless reasons. Season 2, Episode 10, "Noël," excels with this concept through a searingly accurate,...

Unfortunately, there are several great TV show characters whose exits are far more anticlimactic than they deserve. It’s not unusual for a character to depart mid-way through a show’s run, and many of the best TV shows of all time feature an exit from one of their most beloved figures. However, not all of these storylines are necessarily well written, or even make any sense.
There are plenty of examples of TV show exits that are out of character, but they are still dramatic and interesting enough to keep audiences engaged. For some actors, their departure storylines don’t do their character justice, and after years of starring in their respective shows, their final scenes fall flat. A bad or boring TV character exit is often annoying, but an anticlimactic one is often a lot worse.

The best episodes of The West Wing showcase why Aaron Sorkin’s political drama is still considered one of the highest quality TV shows to ever be broadcast. Running across 7 seasons from 1999 to 2006 on NBC, The West Wing focused on the presidency of Jed Bartlet (Martin Sheen) and the staff supporting him. It remains a hugely influential show, with many still citing it as one of the best written dramas of the last few decades. In fact, it was so well written that some real world governments such as Myanmar used it to study democracy (via NY Magazine).
Given the consistent quality of the show, competition for the best episode of The West Wing is fierce. When it comes to accolades, The West Wing was nominated for a staggering 289 awards across its run, winning 100. This article contains spoilers for "Wicked."
When Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman's stage musical adaptation of Gregory Maguire's novel "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West" made its Broadway debut in 2003, few could have anticipated what an international sensation "Wicked" would become. The story is told from the perspective of two witches, Elphaba and Galinda, who will later become The Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda The Good, respectively.
It takes place before and after Dorothy Gale's arrival in the magical land of Oz, explaining how both women would end up down their inevitable paths. With gorgeous spectacle evoking the technicolor brilliance of Victor Fleming's classic 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz," and some of the most memorable songs in the entire Broadway canon, "Wicked" took the world by storm. Released in 2005, Into the West is a special kind of Western. Most examples of Western movies and shows feature characters exploring the great American West. They tackle manifest destiny, a journey to the frontier, and conflict between the Indigenous and the colonizing community. Some non-traditional productions twist that trope. Still, they all generally revolve around the same idea of an intruder wandering into native territory and preparing for a fight of some kind. Sometimes, they fight against their own people. Sometimes, they fight against the native people. In most cases, there is certainly a fight of some kind.
Yet not all Westerns tackle those same concepts. There are some cases where the story does not take place in the new frontier,...

It's difficult to believe that The West Wing is celebrating its 25th anniversary -- because the show's pilot doesn't feel like it's 25 years old. The first episode of the NBC drama is the master class in how to write a TV pilot. Not only does it offer a strong story, but it makes strides toward character development and world-building that normally take a half-season elsewhere. That's fitting for a show that moves at breakneck pace, and yet doesn't lose anything in the shuffle.
In "Pilot," audiences meet the senior staff of the Bartlet White House on an incredibly hectic day. Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman is about to be fired for insulting a member of the Christian right on a TV show, Deputy Communications Director Sam Seaborn learns that the woman he slept with happens to be a call girl, and over a thousand Cubans are heading toward Florida seeking asylum.

The West Wingcreator Aaron Sorkin is no stranger to thoughts of rebooting the beloved political drama, especially given fans' continued enthusiasm for the show nearly two decades after its conclusion. But after a visit to the White House in celebration of The West Wing's 25th anniversary last week, Sorkin reports that he's now seriously considering a revival.

The new Mean Girls film is a hit at the US box office – but the marketing has not been going out of its way to reveal the movie is a musical.
Last week in the US and this coming weekend in the UK it’s the turn of the new Mean Girls film to try and draw people into cinemas. In the US as well, it’s certainly worked: a $28m opening weekend is a good return, and Paramount will be rather chuffed with that.
Not least because its marketing campaign has clearly paid dividends here. As we’ve discussed on this very site before, it selected the folder marked ‘market a musical, but don’t tell anyone it’s a musical’. The new Mean Girls is, after all, an adaptation of the stage musical, which in turn is based on the wonderful 2004 film.

Fans of Dragon Ball Super certainly know that the series originally was inspired by the Chinese classic, Journey to the West, with Goku being a direct parallel to that story's Sun Wukong. Few, however, realize that the trend of drawing from Journey to the West even applies to characters from Dragon Ball Super, in particular Goku Black.
Many original Dragon Ball characters, such as Oolong, Puar, and even Bulma were counterparts to Journey to the West characters which shared similar roles. As Dragon Ball gradually became its own thing, these similarities diminished, but the characters who were drawn from the classic tale remained a part of the world. By the time of Dragon Ball Z, the story had completely diverged, and it seemed no other elements of Journey to the West would likely make it into the series. However, as it turns out, Dragon Ball Super's villain Goku Black...

Television has been living in a Golden Age for a few decades now, and the advent of streaming has only increased the number of prestigious and high-profile series to generate headlines. With many people cutting the cord and switching to streaming, it seemed like the linear network model was going out the door. While it has had to be reworked in some respects, many successful series still draw viewers to live television, and no show has exemplified that more than Yellowstone.

Quentin Tarantino is a filmmaker well-versed in the Western genre. He has verbally voiced this in many instances, but his love for these films is more than evident in the way he quotes it with his style of filmmaking with callbacks to some of the greatest films in the genre. His reverence eventually bore fruit when he finally made his first true Western with Django Unchained in 2012, which was soon followed by another Western with The Hateful Eight in 2015.
Where Django received much-deserved praise, some saw The Hateful Eight as a weaker film in Tarantino's filmography, causing the movie to be disregarded in some circles. Not only is The Hateful Eight a wonderful Tarantino film, but it's also a masterpiece of the Western genre that should be celebrated for its incredible artistic value. Here are five reasons why The Hateful Eight is one of the greatest Westerns ever made.

In August 2021, the fall of Kabul was seen in news coverage taking place in real time, as the Taliban took hold of Afghanistan’s capital only a few days after the American armed forces pulled out of the country following a two-decade-long presence. After 20 years of hard-won gains, under Taliban rule, women in the country were almost immediately barred from education after the sixth grade, could not leave their homes without a male chaperone and were barred from working.
Afghan filmmaker Sahra Mani had left her home a few days prior to Kabul’s collapse to attend a film festival in Europe. Unbeknownst to her, she would not return. “I never thought, ‘This will be the last time I pack my suitcase and close my door,’” says Mani, who is currently living in France. “Even now I don’t remember if I closed my window properly or not.”

Kevin Costner caused a huge upset by stepping away from the Yellowstone franchise earlier this month, and it seems that fans are still unforgiving of his decision. The fallout of the actor’s departure from Paramount’s popular series could well end up impacting his new project, Horizon, which itself is an epic Western movie series. As Costner celebrated his new project with a post on Instagram, the comments section was bombarded with fans angry at the way his Yellowstone journey has ended and the fact that Costner is now keen to promote his own project in the same genre.
There seems to be many reasons why Kevin Costner decided to hang up his Yellowstone stetson, and while the franchise is continuing in other forms, there are many fans who are now abandoning the actor’s new project in the same way they feel he abandoned them. Costner shared an...

Plot: Kate Wyler is the new US Ambassador to the United Kingdom. She was supposed to go to Afghanistan. She’s great in a crisis zone. In a historic home… less so. War is brewing on one continent and boiling over on another. Kate will have to diffuse international crises, forge strategic alliances in London, and adjust to her new place in the spotlight — all while trying to survive her marriage to fellow career diplomat and political star Hal Wyler.
Review: Political series come in two distinct flavors. One is heavily action-oriented, with thrills rooted in espionage and chase sequences like The Night Agent. The other is the intricate palace intrigue housed within the halls of political machinations like House of Cards. Now and then, a third version comes into play that is not reliant on menace or action but manages to be engaging and aspirational, like in NBC’s acclaimed The West Wing.

Keri Russell is going from struggling with cocaine bears to struggling with international relations, as well as personal relations. Russell, who last starred in another politically charged series, The Americans on FX, returns in a new position within inter-country liaisons. Netflix has released the trailer for the drama, The Diplomat. The show’s first season will consist of eight episodes that run an hour long. The series was also filmed on location in London, Paris, and the Cotswolds. Co-starring with Russell is Rufus Sewell, who is seemingly having a ball stressing out Russell’s character as they play husband and wife.
The official synopsis from Netflix reads,
Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) is the new US Ambassador to the United Kingdom. She was supposed to go to Afghanistan. She’s great in a crisis zone. In a historic home… less so. War is brewing on one continent and boiling over on another.

Kevin Costner has landed a new series amid uncertainty surrounding his “Yellowstone” future. The actor will host and executive produce “Kevin Costner’s The West” (working title) for History Channel, the network announced Wednesday. Historian Doris Kearns Goodwin will also executive produce.
The eight-episode documentary series explores the clichés and myths of the “Wild West” and features various perspectives that “capture the spirit of opportunity, adventure and peril through the diverse, complex characters and untold stories that defined the era and continue to shape our country today.”
“I am in love with history. I love the rich, heroic and harrowing stories of the West. The people and their stories have always held a fascination for me, but there’s an urgency today to put those times and the men and women who we think we know in perspective, in the context of their times, without judgement,” said Costner in a statement.

Though an instantly recognizable face from films such as “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” “A Walk to Remember” and “Erin Brockovich,” it is Peter Coyote’s voice — a coolly authoritative baritone with a Zen master’s holy roll — that has endeared him to documentary lovers and makers. Alrhough director-writer Alex Gibney used Coyote’s wisened narration for “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room,” and “The Pacific Century,” it is Ken Burns’ work where Coyote’s tones are most welcomed. In a collaboration that started with the 1992 documentary “The West,” Coyote has gone on to narrate 11 of Burns’ PBS film series, becoming almost a DeNiro to the documentarian’s Scorsese.
Being a musician and musical collector since his adolescence made Coyote an apt choice to narrate Burns’ epic new “Country Music” series. But it is the actor-writer’s activist past in the 1960s, cofounding the Diggers — the anarchist communal group that sought...

An electric chamber piece that couldn’t more perfectly complement “Dunkirk” if Christopher Nolan wrote it, “Darkest Hour” is as rousing and ferocious as Winston Churchill was himself. It’s also a hell of a lot more controlled. Unfolding with the clockwork precision of a Broadway play — director Joe Wright has always been at his best when he’s at his most theatrical — this tightly coiled retelling of Churchill’s first days in office is more than (yet another) passionate appeal to our collective goodness; it’s a deliciously unsubtle testament to the power of words and their infinite capacity to inspire.
That the film arrives at a time when words seem to have lost all their value only makes it that much more persuasive.
Hardly the first time that Wright has fetishized the sway of language and its ability to shape history (“Atonement” was so lost in letters that...

When he isn’t composing music for filmmakers like David Fincher (“The Social Network”), Peter Berg (“Patriots Day”) or Ken Burns (“The Vietnam War”), Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor does what a lot of artists do: rage against opinionated internet users. In a new interview with Yahoo! Music, Reznor does just that — especially since he thinks it results in “made to please, vegan restaurant patron-type shit.”

“What has crept in is that everyone’s a commentator now,” Reznor laments. “The internet is giving voice to everybody thinking that someone gives a shit what they have to say and they have the right. I think, in general, that has created a toxic environment for artists and led to some very safe music. Artists are trying to make music to please the tastemakers that tell the sheep what to like.
