French actor Chiara Mastroianni and iconic Hong Kong director Johnnie To are among a pack of heavyweight names joining Tony Leung Chiu-wai on the main competition jury of this year’s Tokyo International Film Festival. The festival is set to run Oct. 28 – Nov. 6.
Completing the judging panel are Hungarian screenwriter and director Ildiko Enyedi and Japanese star actor Hashimoto Ai.
The festival’s full lineup of films and events will be outlined at a presentation in late September.
The selection of Enyedi, who won the 2017 edition of the Berlin festival with her “On Body and Soul,” cannot be a coincidence. She is directing Leung in upcoming title “Silent Friend,” a picture which marks Leung’s first European movie role.
“Being in a jury is always an exceptional, very intense experience. This is not a field for small talk. Jury work is a series of unusually deep and revealing meetings,” said Enyedi.

Plot:: This emotionally thrilling series reveals the shocking story of how fashion icon Christian Dior and his contemporaries, including Coco Chanel, Pierre Balmain, and Cristóbal Balenciaga navigated the horrors of World War Il and launched modern fashion.
Review: Fashion design has found great success as fodder for reality series and romantic comedies. Films like The Devil Wears Prada, Robert Altman’s Pret-a-Porter, and Ryan Murphy’s limited series Halston have looked at the intricacies of the fashion world, mostly from a contemporary standpoint. The new AppleTV+ series The New Look is designed as the start of an anthology series by looking at the tumultuous period after World War II when French fashion icons Christian Dior and Coco Chanel reinvented what we consider haute couture. With a stellar cast led by Ben Mendelsohn and Juliette Binoche, The New Look should have been an instant frontrunner for series of the year. Instead,...

Though she rose to fame thanks largely to her looks, Italian superstar Sophia Loren more than proved her acting chops with a series of international hits and an Oscar win for Best Actress. But how many of her titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 15 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1934 in Rome, Loren began appearing in films both in her native Italy and in Hollywood, popping up in several titles that played more to her incredible beauty than her acting chops. That all changed with “Two Women” (1961), a stirring drama from Italian neorealist Vittoria De Sica that cast her as a mother protecting her daughter from the horrors of World War II. The role brought her international acclaim and Oscar, BAFTA and Cannes Film Festival victories as Best Actress, making her the first performer in a foreign language film to win at the Academy.

As any critic will tell you, when you’re watching a comedy with an audience, it doesn’t matter how bad the movie is — even the jokes that are making you groan are going to provoke laughter. (That’s why comedies are always screened with a crowd; the studios want the audience giggles to rub off on you.) But at the Venice Film Festival, when I saw “The Palace,” Roman Polanski’s garish debacle of an ensemble comedy, I was sitting in the Sala Darsena, which seats 1400 (and was full), and on the rare occasion when a line in the movie got laughs, it was literally coming from about six people. I’m not sure if I’ve ever heard a giant theater this deadly silent for a movie that’s working this strenuously to amuse you.
Polanski, if you look back over his credits, has an astoundingly consistent track...

Actor who worked in film and TV for more than six decades, and was a regular in Robert Altman’s other films, had originally planned to be a singer
Sally Kellerman, the Oscar and Emmy-nominated actor who played Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in director Robert Altman’s 1970 film M*A*S*H, has died. Kellerman died of heart failure at her home Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, her manager and publicist Alan Eichler said. She was 84.
Kellerman had a career of more than 60 years in film and television. She was a regular in Altman’s films, appearing in 1970’s Brewster McCloud, 1992’s The Player and 1994’s Prêt-à-Porter – but she would always be best known for playing Major Houlihan, a strait-laced, by-the-book army nurse who is tormented by rowdy doctors during the Korean war in the comedy M*A*S*H.

Sally Kellerman, who was Oscar nominated for her supporting role as Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in Robert Altman’s “Mash” feature film, died Thursday in Woodland Hills, Calif. She was 84.
Her publicist Alan Eichler confirmed her death, and her daughter Claire added that she had been suffering from dementia for the past five years.
Among her other roles were a cameo in Altman’s “The Player,” a professor in Rodney Dangerfield’s “Back to School” and a Starfleet officer in the “Star Trek” episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before.”

Robert Altman’s 1994 fashion industry satire Prêt-à-Porter is getting a TV series adaptation. Paramount+ is developing a series based on the feature comedy-drama, sources said. It comes from Miramax Television.
Co-written, directed and produced by Altman, the Miramax-distributed film, released in the U.S. as Ready to Wear (Prêt-à-Porter), chronicles the interconnected lives of a group of people in the lead-up to the 1994 Paris Fashion Week, where models, designers, reporters and fashion editors gather to present next year’s trends. (Watch the film’s trailer below.)
Written by Ava Pickett, I hear the series will focus on the next generation, revolving around young people on the first rung of success’ ladder. It is envisioned as an aspirational series about ambition thwarted, youth culture and identity in crisis, and fighting for what you want. Reps for Paramount+ and Miramax TV declined comment.

A film acting career that spans seven decades is so extremely rare that it’s almost unheard of, but 86-year-old Sophia Loren is living proof that it is possible. Since her early days as an extra, the Italian screen legend has stunned audiences all over the world with her timeless beauty as well as her remarkable talent, for which she has been consistently rewarded. In 1995, she was chosen as the 10th female recipient of the Golden Globes’ highest honor: the Cecil B. DeMille Award. Though she has a total of five Globe wins to her name, she has still never prevailed in a competitive category – but, that could change this year.

Salvatore Ferragamo is now the subject of a new documentary from Call Me By Your director Luca Guadagnino. Ahead of its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, we caught up with the Oscar-nominated Italian filmmaker about the film, which charts Ferragamo’s remarkable rags to riches story.
Guadagnino spent two years piecing the story together from a script by fashion and culture journalist Dana Thomas. Talking heads include Martin Scorsese, Ferragamo’s family members, costume designer Deborah Nadoolman Landis, and famous designers Manolo Blahnik and Christian Louboutin. Aiello in Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing".
Actor Danny Aiello has passed away at age 86 following a brief illness. Aiello didn't start acting until age 34 but when he did, he became a reliable and popular character actor. He was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing", playing the owner of a pizza parlor trying to navigate boiling racial tensions in the neighborhood. He also had a memorable role in Norman Jewison's "Moonstruck". Other films include "The Godfather Part II", "The Front", "The Purple Rose of Cairo", "Radio Days" (the latter three with Woody Allen), "Fingers", "Fort Apache the Bronx", "The Cemetary Club", "Ready to Wear", "The Professional", "Once Upon a Time in America" and "Prince of the City". Although Aiello worked with some of the most legendary directors, his one regret was not having been cast in a Martin Scorsese film.

Aiello worked steadily in films starting in the mid-1970s, often playing cops, mobsters and other New York tough guys. Sophia Loren celebrates her 85th birthday on September 20, 2019. Though she rose to fame thanks largely to her looks, the Italian superstar more than proved her acting chops with a series of international hits and an Oscar win for Best Actress. But how many of her titles remain classics? In honor of her birthday, let’s take a look back at 15 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
SEEOscar Best Actress Gallery: Every Winner in Academy Award History
Born in 1934 in Rome, Loren began appearing in films both in her native Italy and in Hollywood, popping up in several titles that played more to her incredible beauty than her acting chops. That all changed with “Two Women” (1961), a stirring drama from Italian neorealist Vittoria De Sica that cast her as a mother protecting her daughter from the horrors of World War II. The role brought her international acclaim and Oscar,...

Michel Legrand, three-time Oscar winner and composer of such classic film songs as “The Windmills of Your Mind,” “I Will Wait for You,” “You Must Believe in Spring” and “What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?,” along with the groundbreaking musical score for “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg,” has died. He was 86.
Legrand died at his home early Saturday in Paris, his publicist told Agence France-Presse. His wife, French actress Macha Meril, was at his side.
His most recent film score was “The Other Side of the Wind,” composed for Orson Welles’ last film, which was finally completed and released in 2018. Decades ago, after their 1974 collaboration on “F for Fake,” the legendary director had asked for another Legrand jazz score. “I take it as a gift from Orson, through the clouds,” he said early last year.

All eyes were on Felicity Jones at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards Tuesday. The star of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story showed up to Berkeley Square Gardens in London wearing a black gown from Christian Dior's Fall 2017 Ready to Wear collection. But it was the diamond ring on her left hand that really had people talking, as Us Weekly had reported three weeks ago that Charles Guard popped the question in early May. The event marked Jones' first public appearance since the rumored proposal; her rep ignored E! News' requests for comment. Neither Jones nor Guard has commented on the status of their relationship. Jones was on hand to give Maria Grazia Chiuri with the Designer award. James Corden...

Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart Blu-Ray Review
There are few movies that are as wild, original, and filled with soul as Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart, and the only problem with that is that it’s going to make you think someone else directed it. (He didn’t.)
Adapted by Mathias Malzieu from his own bestselling novel and the gold-selling album by his band Dionysos, Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart is a magical story that feels like a new breed of myth, and it comes to you through brilliant animation.
Born on the coldest day in the history of the Earth, Jack’s heart is frozen solid. To save his life, midwife Madeleine grafts a tiny cuckoo clock into his chest to take its place. Everything will be fine, she tells him, so long as he follows three rules in order to keep things running smooth – He can never touch the clock’s workings,...

Manuel here with some Streeptastic news.
Meryl Streep has just signed on to play Florence Foster Jenkins in an upcoming Stephen Frears film. Florence will follow the eponymous protagonist, a New York heiress whose lack of musical talent didn’t stop her from pursuing a career in opera in the early twentieth century. This should be good news for us Streep fans because it means we may get three back-to-back-to-back musically-centered Meryl films in a row. Remember she’s set to play Maria Callas for Mike Nichols’ HBO adaptation of Terence McNally’s Master Class while she’s currently filming Ricky and the Flash, the Diablo Cody-penned Jonathan Demme film about an aging rock-star. More thrillingly, the Frears/Demme/Nichols triple punch is the closest we’ve gotten in a while to Streep committing to working with top-tier directing talent (no offense to David Frankel, Philippa Lloyd and Philip Noyce...

Hollywood has lost a second iconic voice in less than 24 hours. Lauren Bacall, star of screen, stage and television, passed away at the age of 89 Tuesday. Born Betty Joan Perske in the Bronx, New York in 1924, Bacall was discovered by director Howard Hawks' wife Nancy after she saw a photo of her in Vogue magazine. After flying her across the country for a screen test, Hawks transformed Betty into Lauren and cast her opposite Humphrey Bogart in his classic 1944 drama "To Have and Have Not." And, as they say, "a star was born." Bacall was a fixture of the golden age of Hollywood appearing on screen opposite Bogart, her first husband, several more times including films such as "The Big Sleep" (1946), "Dark Passage" (1947) and "Key Largo" (1948). She also starred alongside Marilyn Monroe in "How to Marry A Millionaire" (1953), with John Wayne in "Blood Alley" (1955), with Tony Curtis and Natalie Wood...

This week's news in the arts
London Fashion Week drew to a close yesterday, leaving us with only memories and a thousand photographs. But while fashion and photography have long been soul mates, the catwalk has also made a strong showing across film, music and literature – well beyond Naomi Campbell's classic Swan, and Lauren Weisenberg's seminal The Devil Wears Prada. Eighties sparring partners Bret Easton Ellis and Jay McInerney covered the territory with Glamorama (1998) and Model Behaviour (2007) respectively. A portrait of the empty world of the catwalk, Easton Ellis's anti-hero keeps himself entertained by joining a male model terrorist group.
In fact, the model caught up in world events is a recurring theme. As Zoolander's Derek Zoolander says: "I'm pretty sure there's a lot more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good-looking." It turns out that more is saving the world from the evil Mugatu during the course of a fashion show.

Paris -- Woody Allen would like to use France's first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy for a film role, the director said on Rtl radio Thursday.
"I'm sure she would be wonderful," he said through a translator. "She's got charisma, she's already acted so she's not unknown to an audience. There are a lot of ways I could use her though I don't have a story for her at the moment," he said.
"But I'll certainly talk to her about it and I'll ask her if she's interested."
Bruni-Sarkozy, one of the world's top models before starting a career as a singer and marrying President Nicolas Sarkozy last year, has appeared briefly on the big screen, playing herself in Robert Altman's 1994 fashion satire "Pret-a-Porter."
Allen, whose latest film "Whatever Works" comes out in France next month, plans to shoot a film in Paris next year, Rtl said.

Tributes for Altman Pour In
Tributes have poured in for director Robert Altman, who died on Monday from complications related to cancer. Meryl Streep, Elliot Gould, Richard Gere, Tim Robbins and Sophie Loren - all of whom starred in Altman's films - have praised the auteur, who passed away in a Los Angeles hospital at the age of 81. Gould, who starred in M*A*S*H, says, "He was the last great American director in the tradition of John Ford." Meryl Streep, the star of Altman's last movie A Prairie Home Companion, adds, "What a gent, what a guy, what a great heart. Bob's restless spirit has moved on. I have to say, when I spoke with him last week, he seemed impatient for the future. He still had the generous, optimistic appetite for the next thing, and we planned the next film laughing in anticipation of the laughs we'd have." Dr. T And The Women star Gere says, "There's no-one I'm prouder to have worked with. He was an ecstatic ... a magician ... a conjurer ... a mischievous boy. He understood and could express that uniquely American shapeshifting goofiness more than anyone. He was the deepest ocean and the lightest feather at the same time. We all loved him so much." Tim Robbins, who worked with Altman in The Player, Short Cuts and Pret-a-Porter, calls Altman, "A great friend and inspiration to me since I had the honour of meeting him in 1990." Pret-a-Porter actress Loren says, "I am extremely sad. Another giant has left us." Kevin Spacey, who put on a Altman-directed production of Arthur Miller play Resurrection Blues at the London theatre he is artistic director of, says, "Robert Altman was a truly unique director and an extraordinary man. We are all saddened by this news and send our condolences to his wife Kathryn and family."...

Robert Altman, the legendary director behind such modern classics as MASH, Nashville, The Player, and Gosford Park, died Monday night in Los Angeles; he was 81. The cause of death was not immediately disclosed, and a statement released Tuesday afternoon stated that Altman died from complications due to cancer; the news release also said that Altman had been in pre-production for a film he was slated to start shooting in February. When he was presented with an honorary Academy Award just last year, Altman revealed that he had been the recipient of a heart transplant within the past ten years, a fact he hadn't made public because he feared it would hinder his ability to get work. One of the most influential and well-respected directors of modern cinema, Altman's work was marked by a naturalistic approach that favored long, unbroken tracking shots and overlapping dialogue (as well as storylines), as well as improvisation, usually among a large ensemble cast. Though now regarded as one of the premier American filmmakers, Altman had a career that reached both popular and critical highs as well as lows, as he burst onto the scene in the early '70s with very acclaimed films, but had a string of commercial and critical failures as well. All told, he received five Oscar nominations for directing MASH, Nashville, The Player, Short Cuts and most recently Gosford Park. Other numerous awards include two Cannes Film Festival wins (for The Player and MASH), a Golden Globe (for Gosford Park) and an Emmy (for the TV series Tanner 88). Born in Kansas City, Altman attended Catholic schools as well as a military academy before enlisting in the Air Force in 1945. After being discharged, Altman tried his hand at acting and writing in both Los Angeles and New York before returning home to Kansas City, where he started making industrial films for the Calvin Company. After numerous false starts, Altman finally made the full move to Hollywood, and in 1957 directed his first theatrical film, The Delinquents. Though it didn't start him on the road to fame, the film was good enough to secure Altman work in television, particularly for Alfred Hitchcock and his Alfred Hitchcock Presents television series. In 1969, Altman was offered the script for MASH, which had been rejected by numerous other filmmakers. The movie, a black comedy set during the Korean War (and a thinly veiled attack on the then-raging Vietnam War), was a rousing commercial and critical success, scoring Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Director and, most famously, inspiring the successful TV sitcom, which took on a very different tone. His films after MASH included the revisionist western McCabe and Mrs. Miller and the updated California noir The Long Goodbye, but it was 1975's Nashville, a multi-layered film centered around the country music capital and the wildly divergent Americans who converged there, that would be his next major success, also receiving Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Director. After Nashville, Altman more often than not found himself on the opposite end of the spectrum, with films such as the acclaimed but sometimes puzzling 3 Women as well as the commercial flop A Wedding and, most notoriously, the Robin Williams version of Popeye, which was technically a hit but seen as an artistic failure. Altman worked constantly through the '80s - his films included Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, Streamers, Secret Honor, and Fool for Love - but it wasn't until the HBO series Tanner 88, about a fictional candidate's run for the presidency, that he found favor again. In the early '90s, the one-two punch of The Player (a biting Hollywood satire) and Short Cuts (based on the stories of Raymond Carver) put him back on the map, but he followed those with the less well-received Pret-a-Porter, The Gingerbread Man, and Cookie's Fortune. True to the ups-and-downs of his career, Altman was back on top with Gosford Park, a British-set ensemble film that combined comedy, drama and mystery, and marked his first Best Picture nominee since Nashville. His last films included a revisit to the world of Tanner 88 with Tanner on Tanner, and just this year, A Prairie Home Companion, based on the radio show by Garrison Keillor. Upon receiving his honorary Oscar last year, Altman appeared to be in fine health, but reportedly directed most of A Prairie Home Companion from a wheelchair, with the Altman-influenced director Paul Thomas Anderson on hand. Altman is survived by his third wife, Kathryn, their two sons, and a daughter and two other sons from two previous marriages. --Mark Englehart, IMDb staff...
