Zac Efron's "We Are Your Friends" was unfriended by most of the country this weekend. The Edm movie, co-starring Wes Bentley and Emily Ratajkowski, was released on 2,333 screens but only made $1.8 million. That's not just short of the $8 million projection, it's also the worst wide-release launch of Efron's career and one of the worst openings of any studio film ever.
Entertainment Weekly culled the list of the top 10 worst wide-release movies ever, and "We Are Your Friends" ended up at No. 3, just behind "Delgo" and "Oogieloves In The Big Balloon Adventure." This movie actually did worse than the much-mocked "The Adventures of Pluto Nash" and marks Wes Bentley's second time on the list, since he was also in the horror movie "P2."
According to Variety, Warner Bros. only spent $2 million to acquire "We Are Your Friends." Warner Bros. distribution executive vice president Jeff Goldstein commented on the opening: "We're disappointed,...

Another faith based movie came out of "nowhere" to shock Hollywood at the box office on Friday. That's narrative you'll see in most stories about "War Room's" performance, but it may be more about the entertainment media ignoring the consistent performances of faith based movies more than anything else. "War Room," which was distributed by Sony Pictures division TriStar Pictures, took in $3.875 million on its first day to knock "Straight Outta Compton" from the top spot for the first time in 15 days. "Room" was directed and co-written by Alex Kendrick whose last two films, "Courageous" and "Fireproof," each earned over $33 million during their theatrical runs. Moreover, "Room" looks like it will slightly exceed the $9.1 million "Courageous" earned over its first three days in 2011. As with all of Kendrick's productions, the marketing is aimed at churches and religious groups on a grass roots level which flows under the radar for those covering the biz.

American in Peril: Dowdle Bros. Play on Base Fears with Survival Drama
It’s unfortunate so many superficial elements are working against the objective consideration of No Escape, beginning with its potentially problematic casting of an unwavering comic star as the lead in what promises to be a pulse-pounding thriller. Add to this a flurry of uneasy marketing elements, including dreadfully cheesy poster art, corny taglines, borrowing a title from a likeable 90’s sci-fi flick starring Ray Liotta, and the potential of this latest effort from the Dowdle Bros. (Quarantine; As Above, So Below) promises the making of an undeniable turkey.
Despite all of these unfavorable buzz-killing aspects, the film manages to be an unfathomable rarity in that it manages to overcome all of these red-flag detractions as an uncomfortably tense survival thriller. Though not without a certain amount of quibbling in reference to its sometimes problematic ‘truths’, such as...

Splendid form doesn’t necessarily mean equally noteworthy function: When film school professors screen the works of Leni Riefenstahl and D.W. Griffith, it’s for the craftsmanship and not for the messaging. It’s up to history whether or not future students categorize “No Escape” alongside the work of those earlier auteurs, but it’s fair to say that this new movie combines genuine filmmaking skill and effective action editing with a queasily racist subtext, one in which a bloody revolution in Asia only matters insofar as some white people might get killed. You may recall “The Impossible,” the recent tsunami movie in which the.

The late summer slowdown has arrived at America's movie theaters, but don't tell that to Universal Pictures. The studio is flying high with "Straight Outta Compton" ruling the box office for the second weekend in a row. F. Gary Gray's biopic about the rise of seminal rap group N.W.A. took in another $26.7 million (down a slightly more than expected 55.5%) for an incredible $111.4 million in just 10 days. With little real competition on the horizon, "Compton" could remain no. 1 all the way through Labor Day weekend. Holding strong at no. 2 was Paramount Pictures's "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation." The fifth installment in the long running franchise earned another $11.7 million for $157.7 million. Globally it's found $438.5 million and will look for a boost when opening in China on Sept. 8. Three new films entered multiplexes on Friday and the top performer was "Sinister 2." The Gramercy Pictures flick took third with $10.6 million. That's a...

Further horrors emerge in True Detective, from the past and the present. Here's Michael's review of Church In Ruins...
Warning: this review contains spoilers
2.6 Church in Ruins
Just a couple of weeks ago, True Detective offered us Down Will Come, a relatively strong episode that benefited from a dramatic climactic scene and an extended focus on one of the less examined of the four leading characters. Church in Ruins repeated the trick, albeit with some subtle differences. Where episode 4 ended with an explosion of violence, 6 finished with a deep burn of intensity. 4 let us peer into the soul of Paul Woodrugh, 6 uncovered more about Ani Bezzerides.
Indeed, that entire hideous sex party scene worked because the focus was so closely on Bezzerides’ experience there. The presentation could have been exploitative or gratuitous, but by tracking so closely to her point of view, it avoided either trap while offering a more intense feeling of unease.

We may remember Independence Day, The Matrix, The Phantom Menace. But what about these forgotten 90s sci-fi films? And are any worth seeing?
Think back to the science fiction cinema of the 1990s, and some of the decade's biggest box-office hits will immediately spring to mind: The Phantom Menace, Jurassic Park, Independence Day, Men In Black, Armageddon and Terminator 2 were all in the top 20 most lucrative films of the era.
But what about the sci-fi films of the 1990s that failed to make even close to the same cultural and financial impact of those big hitters? These are the films this list is devoted to - the flops, the straight-to-video releases, the low-budget and critically-derided. We've picked 50 live-action films that fit these criteria, and dug them up to see whether they're still worth watching in the 21st century.

After squaring away a significant amount of Bond movies, Pierce Brosnan still can’t shake off the action. In his post-007 career, the actor has turned in a handful of standard shoot-em-up affairs, but none that are likely to stand the test of time in comparison to the world’s favorite secret agent. Bearing that in mind, will 2015 be Brosnan’s year to shine? It just may be, as he has another couple of actioners due for release, including No Escape and the subject of today’s trailer: Survivor.
Directed by James McTeigue (V For Vendetta, Ninja Assassin) the movie revolves around a Foreign Service Officer (Milla Jovovich). The target of a ruthless assassin (Brosnan) attempting to take her out for a terrorist hit she committed, she must avoid his deadly attempts, try to clear her name after being framed And stop the actual perpetrators of the attack.

Pierce Brosnan played James Bond from 1994 to 2005, so clearly he knows his way around action fare. Yet his latest attempts at trying to position himself as a Liam Neeson-esque aging action star haven't been working out. You probably already forgot about last year's "The November Man," and this coming summer he's got the pretty terrible looking "No Escape" with Owen Wilson, but first is "Survivor" which I didn't even know existed, and a new trailer has arrived. James McTeigue ("V For Vendetta," "Ninja Assassin") directs this film about a Foreign Service Officer who is targeted by a ruthless assassin while trying to clear his name after being framed for a terrorist bombing and to stop the real bad guys' actual plan. That sounds exhausting. Dylan McDermott, Angela Bassett and Robert Forster also feature in this movie that has no shortage of electronic gadgets and actors looking aghast. "Survivor" arrives in theaters.

The 1990s: a time when Sleepwalkers, Burt Reynolds, No Escape, Chevy Chase and F/X/2 could top the Us box office...
By the 1990s, studios were waking up to movie marketing, and the era of the blockbuster. Tim Burton's Batman, released in summer 1989, had introduced the idea of a big opening weekend, and modern movies now target their promotional work to get just that. As such, it's harder and harder for smaller films to snare the top slot at the Us box office, even for one weekend.
In the 1990s, particularly the first half of the 1990s, that wasn't so much the case though. In fact, many films that have long since fallen from the public conscious topped the chart. And in this piece, I've tried to capture some of them.

It was due to come out next month but you wouldn't know it as no real promotional material exists yet for the film. Now "The Coup," the action thriller starring Owen Wilson and Pierce Brosnan, is being retitled and delayed.
The John Erick Dowdle directed film, which was slated for a March 6th release, is now targeting a September 2nd date. The film will also now be called "No Escape".
Wilson plays an American businessman who resettles his family in Southeast Asia. Suddenly finding themselves in the middle of a violent political uprising, they must frantically look for a safe escape as rebels mercilessly attack the city.
Why the title change? Seems "The Coup" tested poorly with audiences as, quite literally, it appears a decent portion of them weren't educated enough to understand what a 'coup' is.
Lake Bell also stars in the film which Drew Dowdle, Michel Litvak and David Lancaster are producing.

We’re still waiting to see another big-screen effort from Casino Royale man Martin Campbell – when your most recent film is the drubbed Green Lantern, it makes sense that you’d carefully select your next project. So while several possibilities are still in the air, he’s taking his time. Campbell has just added another potential film, teaming up with producer Gale Anne Hurd for an adaptation of the graphic novel Sebastian X.Déjà Vu writer Bill Marsilii is the man they’ve hired to write the script, adapting the title from French comics publisher Humanoids. Writer Michelangelo La Neve and artist Stuart Immonen concocted the graphic novel’s story, which sees an elite cop badly injured on a mission. As he recovers, he’s implanted with the memories of a terrorist so he can infiltrate the man’s gang before a planned attack.Voltage Pictures is also backing this one,...

To celebrate Alien: Isolation achieving gold status — meaning the first-person scarefest is finished and ready for distribution — publisher Sega has unveiled an eerie new trailer aptly titled No Escape.
The teaser trailer, which you can check out above, is the first of nine short clips which will be released periodically in the build-up to the title’s release in October. Starring our protagonist Amanda Ripley, the footage showcases the kind of terrifying, Outlast-like vulnerability we can expect come release.
In essence, the story of Isolation takes place a full fifteen years after the events of Ridley Scott’s seminal 1979 film and will place players in the shoes of the aforementioned heroine. After travelling into deep space in the search of a wayward flight recorder from the doomed Nostromo, Amanda ends up on board the Sevastopol where a deadly Xenomorph has already made itself at home. (And that’s where you come in.

Going into a film from the director of Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil, and Avp: Alien Vs. Predator, one has to put aside any hope that Pompeii will be anything more than a mindless 3-D adventure. I mean . . . look at the title. The inevitable volcanic eruption is far from just hinted at in the advertising for the disaster flick. And while one could argue that the film is quite a bit late to the whole disaster film crazy unofficially reignited by Roland Emmerich, the film’s director seems to be a slave to a script that attempts to be much more than just the kitschy spectacle that the film’s title would imply.
Pompeii wants to have its dramatic cake and explode it too. The film takes itself way too seriously instead of embracing the ‘B-movie’ style that it should. For the first hour we are treated to the recycled story...

We had the final trailer earlier this month, and now here's the ultimate* poster for Paul W. S. Anderson's Pompeii, promising "No warning" and "No escape". No emphasis on the stars either: the thinking is clearly that the focus of the film is the angry Mount Vesuvius. Kit Harington and Emily Browning are relegated to an anonymous embrace. Still, an anonymous embrace is better than no embrace at all, we're saying. In the film, Game Of Thrones' Harington plays Milo, a slave who must rescue not only his best pal (fellow gladiator Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) but also the woman he loves, Cassia (Browning), when Vesuvius erupts and begins to bury the shining Roman city of Pompeii under ash and debris. There’s just one other issue when it comes to Cassia and Milo’s happiness: she’s promised to a nasty Roman senator, played by Kiefer Sutherland.{New Pompeii Pics...

“No Warning. No Escape.” Not that Paul Anderson, this is the new movie from Paul W.S. Anderson, not Paul Thomas Anderson. This is a movie from the very much lesser Paul Anderson. Paul W.S. Anderson might not be as critically acclaimed as Paul Thomas Anderson, but his films do appeal to a large swath of the general public. While his films are not as gestures of artistic expression, they are action packed and exciting… for the most part. Read the film’s synopsis below: “Set in 79 A.D., Pompeii tells the story of Milo (Kit Harington), a slave turned invincible gladiator who finds himself in a race against time to save [ Read More ]

Here are 25 more great, unsung films - this time, from the year 1994...
Yes, 1994. The year cinemas were dominated by such whimsical wonders as The Lion King, Forrest Gump, The Mask and, erm, True Lies. It was also the year Gump dominated the Academy Awards, and Four Weddings And A Funeral loomed large at the Baftas.
As ever, there was so much more to the year's cinematic landscape than Tom Hanks' park bench ramblings or Hugh Grant mithering from beneath his gorgously crafted hair. To prove it, here's a list of 25 films that, in our estimation, are among its most underappreciated. There's much horror, drama, tears and laughter, plus a couple of classic documentaries, too.
25. Phantasm III: Lord Of The Dead
The Phantasm series was quite unusual, in that writer and director Don Coscarelli made all four of them. This means that,...

Sylvester Stallone should really know better by now than to go anywhere near a prison.
The evil machinations of Donald Sutherland in Lock Up tried to keep him behind locked doors, a rasping set up by Jack Palance in Tango And Cash ensured he spent some quality jail time in the shower with Kurt Russell, an overzealous legal system and Wesley Snipes’ hair resulted in some high tech freeze-incarceration during Demolition Man, and even a young David Caruso tried his luck at getting Sly behind bars in First Blood, which didn’t really end well for anyone.

Joss Whedon's "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." may be the latest live-action Marvel TV series to sweep the nation, but it is by no means the first. In the late '70's, families would gather around their televisions every Friday night at 9 P.M. to watch a show featuring everyone's favorite not-so-jolly green giant. Starring the likes of Bill Bixby (as Dr. David Banner) and Lou Ferrigno (as the Hulk), "The Incredible Hulk" has garnered a loyal following of fans throughout the years.
In fact, "The Incredible Hulk" was so successful that recently there has been talk of a re-imagined take on the series, helmed by the great Guillermo del Toro. However, with promotion for "Pacific Rim" now underway and huge films such as "Pinocchio" and "Justice League Dark" currently on his plate, it doesn't seem like del Toro will be getting to this passion project anytime soon.

Star Trek: The Video Game arrives on April 23 and shines a special spotlight on the Gorn, that toothy reptilian race that conquered the collective heart of Starfleet fans back in 1967 but never enjoys the kind of attention those loudmouth Klingons get.
April also brings us National Poetry Month and though it’s not the smartest pick as far as the calendar goes (the real reason T.S. At this point, I think we're all well aware that J.J. Abrams has reached the status of demigod in Hollywood and has been offered pretty much every sci-fi project in existence. Everyone wants a piece of him, even if it's just to have his name as a producer. Considering how busy he is, you would think that adding one or two more projects to the pile would be impossible, but what card-carrying geek can resist the draw of being the first one to make a decent video game movie? After Star Trek and Star Wars, everything else is just gravy. So hey, why not throw Portal and Half-Life into the mix as well? Although it may seem like just another wild rumour, J.J. Abrams appeared on stage this week with Valve co-founder Mike Newell at the Dice Summit in Las Vegas (Design Innovate Communicate Entertain). They delivered a keynote on...

The film adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan’s popular graphic novel Y: The Last Man has been in development for a decade, and four months after Vulture learned that it had become a priority at New Line, we now hear that the project finally has a director. It’s Dan Trachtenberg, a first-time feature director who made the short “No Escape,” a popular fan film of the video game, Portal.Y follows the adventures of Yorick Brown, a young escape artist who discovers that he, along with his monkey, Ampersand, may be the only males left living after a plague knocks off almost everyone with a Y chromosome. In nabbing this project on the basis of a fan film, it seems that Trachtenberg beat out the director of an actual Y: The Last Man fan film made by Captain America visual effects supervisor, Christian Cardona. It’s a fan-film-tastic fracas!

The finale of Doctor Who Series 7a seeks to answer an intriguing question – what if each living soul was like a sheaf of pages waiting to be rewritten? This imagined book – an epic account of each existence – would be forever in flux – shifting and changing with each decision made, expanding and contracting with connection and loss, beginning and ending but not necessarily in that order. How much control would we have over what is written there? And if we do not read ahead, can our story be changed?

From my experience, horror films are always the most interesting but least attended films at smaller film festivals as festival audiences seem to be more interested in stories about losing your virginity than werewolves and zombies.
