To prepare for the film, Richard Gere, Mike Figgis and Eric Roth did a tremendous amount of research and studying on manic depression (now called bipolar disorder). Gere met with several people who have the disorder to gain insight and knowledge on what to accurately portray.
Richard Gere's character rides a Triumph Bonneville motorcycle in the movie. San Diego Antique Motorcycle Club president Art Bishop lent his Triumph Bonneville to the film makers for a scene at short notice. Eagle-eyed filmgoers may spot that Bishop's bike is a 1977 750cc T140 Triumph Bonneville whilst a 1966 650cc T120 Triumph Bonneville is in scenes shot earlier. Both Triumphs are finished in blue and white.
Bill Pullman appears in a cameo as the construction foreman in a scene with Richard Gere. The same year he also worked with Richard Gere in Sommersby (1993). Pullman also played a similar role in Liebestraum (1991), also directed by Mike Figgis. Liebestraum was Figgis' previous film to Mr. Jones (1993).
Michael Keaton was originally cast in the lead title role of Mr. Jones according to an article published in the 9th December 1989 issue of 'Screen International'. He had to withdraw from the role for contractual reasons so as to reprise his role as Batman/Bruce Wayne in 'Batman Returns' (1992). Ironically, co-star Michelle Pfeiffer was offered the role of the psychiatrist in 'Mr. Jones' (1993) but turned it down to play Catwoman/Selina Kyle also in 'Batman Returns' (1992).
