Near the beginning of Irvin Kershner's 1980 sci-fi flick "The Empire Strikes Back," the psychic rebel warrior Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is riding alone through the snowy drifts of the distant planet Hoth, mounted on the back of a bipedal beast of burden called a tauntaun. He is on the lookout for any sign of the Empire, hunting the rebels after the destruction of their superweapon, the Death Star. Rather suddenly, Luke is attacked by a wampa, a humanoid yeti native to the planet. The wampa kills the tauntaun, claws Luke, and drags the hapless rebel back to its lair, presumably to be eaten.
The wampa is only seen in flashes. Luke sees a roaring face for a split second and a waving claw. For the 1997 Special Edition of "The Empire Strikes Back" — a notorious re-release that remastered and reworked most of the effects shots — a full-bodied shot of the wampa was included.

Paul Verhoeven's 1990 film "Total Recall" takes place in the distant future of 2084. Mars has not only been colonized, but it has also fallen under the rule of an evil governor named Vilos Cohaagen (Ronny Cox). The planet is rich with a rare, valuable ore called turbinium, but mining it has caused widespread pollution and radiation. Many of the Martian citizens have mutated as a result, their bodies sprouting extra body parts or sporting unusual growths. In many cases, mutants are also mildly psychic. To combat Cohaagen's corruption, a Mutant Resistance has formed, led by the mysterious and difficult-to-find Kuato (Marshall Bell).
The protagonist of "Total Recall" is Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a former agent for Cohaagen who had his memory erased and his identity changed. It takes a long while for Quaid to understand what happened to him, but he eventually discovers that he has to combat Cohaagen and help the Mutant Resistance.

Peter Weller has been in some of the most acclaimed films of the 80s and 90s. He starred in Buckaroo Banzai, Mighty Aphrodite, The New Age, and Naked Lunch. In the 2000s and 2010s, he played Christopher Henderson and Stan Liddy in the fifth seasons of 24 and Dexter respectively. In film, he most popularly appeared as Alexander Marcus in 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness.
Peter Weller in The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension
People over the years have mostly associated Weller with his iconic role of Alex Murphy in 1987’s RoboCop. The thrilling and thought-provoking sci-fi flick became a groundbreaking yet misunderstood film at the time, similar to Blade Runner. However, director Paul Verhoeven initially felt the script was too alien to him and far removed from his previous works.

I don’t think it’s a controversial opinion to state that, of all the RoboCop movies, only Paul Verhoeven’s original 1987 film deserves to be called a classic. However, a lot of us have always thought that the ultra-violent sequel, RoboCop 2, was better than its reputation suggests. I know from our Original Video on the movie that it has more than a few fans, so it’s exciting to reveal that RoboCop 2 is finally getting a 4K Blu-ray release via Scream Factory.
The news was broken by our friends at Blu-ray.com. The company has also licensed José Padilha’s 2014 remake for release. No RoboCop 3 yet. I suppose the company just decided to let that one go, and you can’t really blame them, as it just might be one of the worst sequels of all time.
No news yet on whether RoboCop 2 will contain any special features.

The 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King's horror novel "It" may be best known for Tim Curry's performance as Pennywise, who made an entire generation seriously terrified of clowns, but it would be nothing without the heart and soul of the Loser's Club. In the 1950s, a group of misfit kids growing up in Derry, Maine are brought together, partially because they don't belong anywhere else, but also because they happen to be targeted by the malevolent force that haunts their town, stealing and murdering its local children. Together, they have to face off against Pennywise to stop the killing once and for all. That's what they think, anyway. But despite defeating Pennywise as children, they're forced to return to Derry as adults and once again confront the terrors of their youth.
As a result of this, "It" has an interesting casting dilemma of finding not only seven...

It is 36 years since RoboCop blasted its way onto UK cinema screens and made a splash of epic, gruesome, proportions. With that a cult-like following is born and the film’s influence cannot be overstated.
RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop is an incredibly methodical ‘making of’ documentary that has now set the standard and an exceptionally high one, no less. It comes as no surprise with the success of their recent projects which include Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story and Pennywise: The Story of It.
The documentary oozes passion and is testament to its directors Christopher Griffiths and Eastwood Allen clear love for the film in a project that has been over seven years in the making.
This four part series spans over more than four hours is nothing short of a triumph, it is forensic in its analysis and brings to life the chaos of the RoboCop shoot and does so brilliantly.

It’s been another blockbuster year for horror, but then again it always feels like that. Superhero fatigue has set in and major franchise pictures haven’t returned as expected, but horror, as ever, always seems to reach new heights. The news in 2023 may have been a load of gout, but the horror has been pure gold.
So, without further ado, here is a list of my top 10 of 2023.
RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop
Arrow Films, Vinegar Syndrome and others who have perfected the art of producing feature-length behind the scenes documentaries really have their work cut out for them thanks to RoboDoc. RoboDoc has broken the mould by creating an in-depth documentary that takes you through the entire film scene-by-scene. RoboDoc combines a retrospective documentary, director’s commentary and behind the scenes features into one glorious 4-part series.

One of HBO’s former hot properties returns in a big way this January, as True Detective season four finally arrives on the service. Will this be a return to form for the gritty show? Well, that remains unclear, but this time around the anthology series will follow detectives Liz Danvers (Jodie Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) as the long winter darkness in Alaska. When eight people at the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace, these detectives need to get on the case quickly.
Also hitting Max this month is the final season of Sort Of. Season three finds Sabi (Bilal Baig) dealing with the unexpected death of their father, and making some big life choices as a result.

The heat is back on in this episode of Revisited, as we follow up our last outing with Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop with the inevitable sequel. Part one proved to be such a mammoth hit that not only helped send Eddie Murphy’s career into the stratosphere but it guaranteed that part two wouldn’t be too far away.
If you take a look back at the 1980s, which is something we love to do here at JoBlo, there are many franchises that started in the era and still have longevity or an influence in modern Hollywood. The fan-funded, four-part docuseries RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop is available to watch through the Screambox streaming service, and has also received a Blu-ray release. As fans watch the docuseries, it seems the most popular, standout moment is a sequence where weapons master Randy E. Moore talks about interacting with RoboCop star Peter Weller while holding a stack of Oreos. You can watch that clip in this embed:

RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop documentary is getting sequels that cover RoboCop 2, 3, & TV series
The fan-funded, four-part docuseries RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop was acquired by Cinedigm last year, and the company gave it both a Blu-ray release (you can pick up a copy Here) and a streaming release, through the Screambox streaming service. Directed by Chris Griffiths and Eastwood Allen, RoboDoc focuses primarily on the first RoboCop, but does give a nod to RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3. And if any fans were disappointed that the sequels didn’t get enough coverage, the makers of the documentary have shared some very cool news: RoboDoc is getting its own sequels, which will cover RoboCop 2, RoboCop 3, and even the RoboCop TV series!
The first follow-up will be called RoboDoc Season 2: RoboCop 2, and it’s already expected to be released sometime in late 2024. Then sometime not too far down the line we’ll get RoboDoc Season 3: RoboCop 3 and the TV Series.

When Robocop was first released back in 1987, critics and audiences alike showed their appreciation for Peter Weller, who starred in the title role. The fact that Weller was able to make the character work was a testament to both his work ethic and acting abilities — within a film in which the gore and mayhem was almost cartoon-like, Robocop himself maintained a grounded demeanor. Part of that had to do with an old habit of Weller’s that he put in place: Whenever he was on the set, at the time of the Robocop 2 he told us, he wasn’t Peter, he was Robocop. (Click on the media bar below to hear Peter Weller) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/Peter_weller_RoboCop_.mp3 Robocop and Robocop 2 are available on DVD, Blu-Ray, and most digital platforms.

Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 film RoboCop has withstood the test of time. A whip-smart satire of the police industrial complex and capitalism, it has a unique and grimy flavor that’s rarely been replicated. And the premise of normal police officer Alex Murphy being turned into an unstoppable crime-stopping machine has an appeal that feels tailor made for video games. Years have passed and the RoboCop franchise has received numerous video game adaptations that range from arcade side scrollers to fighting games. Yet none have captured the feeling of the original film and the balance of style and substance it carried. None have ever made the player truly feel like a one-man war on crime in the streets of Detroit. None have ever really felt like RoboCop.

The first-person-shooter video game RoboCop: Rogue City, which features the return of Peter Weller as the iconic hero RoboCop, is set to be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store this Thursday, November 2nd. To remind us the game is right around the corner, a new trailer has arrived online – but this one only features a brief glimpse of the game. Instead, it’s mostly a live-action short in which we see RoboCop out on patrol. You can watch this live-action trailer in the embed above.

RoboCop: Rogue City arrives later this week, and in anticipation, Teyon has released a new live-action trailer for Rogue City that sees RoboCop ride out once again into the streets of Old Detroit to combat crime. The trailer is admittedly a bit more lighthearted than the grittiness that one would expect from RoboCop, and it’s not Derek Mears under the helmet this time or Peter Weller, but hey, it’s fun!
The story for Rogue City takes place between RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3, and sees RoboCop (played once again by Peter Weller) caught up in the gang violence in Old Detroit. Making matters worse is that the gangs have decided to throw in with the “new guy in town”. Previously unknown to the police, this new figure is behind a rash of disappearances, a variety of brazen crimes of all kinds and the trafficking of Nuke.

Ocp, er, Teyon and publisher Nacon have announced pre-orders for RoboCop: Rogue City, which is currently set for release next month. In addition to the regular edition of Rogue City, there will also be a Deluxe Edition referred to as the Alex Murphy Edition, which will include 48-hour Early Access for the game ahead of its launch.
On top of the Early Access, the Deluxe Edition will include a battle-damaged alternative skin for RoboCop reminiscent of the armor at the end of the first film, the Auto-9 prototype handgun skin and the Ocp shotgun secondary weapon, as well as a digital artbook.
If that’s not enough, if you pre-order the game on either PC or console, you can also get the Vanguard Pack. That includes RoboCop’s blue-tinged armor from RoboCop 2, as well as a pitch-black version of the Auto-9.

We’ll have to wait a little longer before we can start serving the public trust in RoboCop: Rogue City. Developer Teyon took to X/Twitter to announce that the game will be pushed back from its original September release for PC and consoles to a more definitive November 2.
This delay comes after Teyon had shown off a new gameplay trailer, along with several minutes of gameplay footage, at Gamescom last week. Furthermore, no mention of the delay was made last week. The developer also didn’t explain the reasoning for the delay, though given how stacked September and October are with highly-anticipated titles, it’s probably not a stretch to have that as a reason for Rogue City‘s delay.

The fan-funded, four-part docuseries RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop was acquired by Cinedigm last year, and the company is currently releasing the series through their Screambox streaming service, with episodes being released on a weekly basis starting today – but if you want to own the documentary on physical media, you’ll be glad to hear that RoboDoc is also set to receive a Blu-ray release in October! On October 17th, to be exact.
Our friends at Bloody Disgusting gave us the heads-up that a collector’s edition Blu-ray release of RoboDoc is available for pre-order through Amazon, and there’s also a steelbook that’s exclusive to Walmart. (It can be pre-ordered through the Walmart website.)
Coming to us from Dead Mouse Productions Ltd and Cult Screenings UK Ltd, RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop is a fully independent retrospective into the making of RoboCop and its cultural impact over the last 30 years.

The eagerly-anticipated RoboCop documentary RoboDoc hits streaming service Screambox & VOD, on August 29th.
It is over 30 years since the Paul Verhoeven classic blasted its way onto the big screen leaving a trail of body parts and blood. Directed by Eastwood Allen and Christopher Griffiths, RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop will showcase the chaotic production of the first movie and more. This is part one of what will be a 4-part limited series spanning over four hours.
Though the streaming release is U.S only, Kaleidoscope Home Entertainment have acquired UK distribution rights with a release expected by the end of the year.
In what promises to be the most in-depth insight into the making of the films as well as TV series it features over 60 interviews with cast and crew including Paul Verhoeven, Nancy Allen, Kurtwood Smith, Ronny Cox as well as Phil Tippett.

Intro: There’s a scene, roughly half way through the much maligned Robocop 3, in which the eponymous law enforcer is malfunctioning, battered and bruised, which is almost the perfect metaphor for the franchise at this point. As outlined in our previous video in this series, Robocop 2 may have had its fair share of issues, but alongside the annoying characters and a frustratingly dumbed down hero, it’s actually a pretty decent movie. It was just nowhere near the sequel it could so easily have been. Which leads us to part three, which is, well…Where do we start? Historically, in the wonderful world of movies in which we all often reside, part three’s, and later sequels to popular franchises, have that nagging tendency to Look like they should, but for the most part, this familiarity leads to something so very, very…Wrong! A good franchise is hard to kill. Bad ones, like the seven-film torture device Police Academy, can be even harder to exterminate. But sometimes doomed series are finally put out of their misery. Up on the shelf they go, doomed to a future of languishing on lists like this one.
The murder weapon is usually money. More specifically, the lack thereof. A big enough failure means a franchise won’t get another chance to pull their act together, and the most spectacular bombs get to live on as warnings to future film students. Even more interesting are the ones that aren’t total flops, the movies that maybe made a profit, but one so small or negligible that their studios decided to put that old franchise to bed, anyway. Here are 15 movies that killed their respective franchises for good.

When you’ve managed to catch lightning in a bottle once, with one of the most revered, beloved, exciting, brutal and iconic movies as 1987’s Robocop, how on earth do you follow it up? Well, it appears from revisiting the much maligned sequel for this retrospective, you make it louder, flashier and, well, a Lot dumber. That’s not to say that Robocop 2 is necessarily a bad movie, it’s just that it had some very broad, metallic, shoulders to follow. So, yes folk, we’re traveling back to dystopian Detroit for the sequel to Paul Verhoeven’s classic original to see what the late, great The Empire Strikes Back director, Irvin Kerschner could pull out of the bag for the much anticipated sequel. When trying to replace a director as ‘edgy’ and formidable as Verhoeven it was certainly wise to pick somebody who had, arguably, delivered The greatest...

Ahead of its September release, IGN has posted a new hands-on preview for Teyon’s upcoming RoboCop: Rogue City. In addition to 10 minutes of gunplay and blood for longtime fans, IGN has also dropped new details on the first-person shooter that will no doubt please longtime fans.
Among the new details, Rogue City will take place between RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3, and will consist of a campaign lasting between 20 to 30 hours, with multiple endings and side quests. The game will also allow players the option to uphold the law in a more peaceful manner in certain situations, or go in Auto 9 blazing.
So yes, it won’t all be a “shoot first, ask questions later” affair, as you will have to do some actual police work in some situations by gathering clues and conducting investigations. Furthermore, you’ll have to serve the public trust, which is where the game’s dialogue trees come in.

You’d think there wouldn’t be all that many surprises in a ranking of the various Star Trek movies. Official fan doctrine tends to elevate a select handful of them to the very top while dismissing, fairly or unfairly, others. But the reality is, there’s such a wide array of tones across Star Trek films that one fan’s skippable entry is another fan’s favorite (well…most of the time).
We chose a panel of our most decorated Starfleet experts to vote on the highs and lows of the Star Trek movie franchise. There’s probably a few surprises in here, but one thing we hope we managed to do, if nothing else, is dispel the “odd number/even number” superstition about these flicks.

It’s hard to imagine any entry in the entire franchise straying further from what Star Trek is all about than Into Darkness.

In the 1920s, Russian animator Władysław Starewicz, a.k.a. Lasislas Starevich, began experimenting with stop-motion animation techniques that would make the process look a little bit more natural. Traditionally for stop-motion, a doll, clay, or other plastic substance would be moved slightly, photographed, moved slightly again, and so on for 24 frames per second, creating the illusion of movement. The resulting animation takes a lot of painstaking work and a great deal of time, but it makes for an appealing style than allowed dolls and models to come to life. The issue Starevich had with stop-motion was that is possessed a "jerky," unnatural quality of movement. He combated this by moving his camera during the photography process to add a blur to the image. If an animated figure had the same photographic blur as a quick-moving human, Starevich figured, then the animated object would appear more real.
Thus, go-motion animation was born.

Conventional wisdom dictates that Irvin Kershner's 1980 film "The Empire Strikes Back" is the best feature in the long-running "Star Wars" film series. Although only the second film -- the third if you count "The Star Wars Holiday Special" -- "Empire" startled audiences by announcing itself as "Episode V." It wouldn't be until 1981 that 35mm prints of George Lucas' "Star Wars" would attach "Episode IV: A New Hope" to the beginning.
Fans of "Empire" appreciate its relatively bleak tone when compared to the rollicking, traditional, 1930s-adventure-serial vibe of the 1977 film. The tone is grayer, the heroes are less assured to win the day, and the film ends without concluding, leaving audiences hanging right when Han Solo (Harrison Ford) is apprehended by the mob, and after Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) has his hand severed in a fight with the evil Darth Vader. Darth Vader also claimed to be Luke's father in that scene,...

Who doesn't love a good team-up? From the Avengers and the Justice League to Dominic Torretto's family and the Expendables, action movies tend to feature some seriously badass collections of people that unite to take down the bad guys. We may even see them team up in some pretty major ways from time to time like in "The Suicide Squad" or "Spider-Man: No Way Home." But most recently, we've seen it happen in the latest season of "Cobra Kai."

Phil Tippett is one of the unsung heroes of modern cinema. Though not everyone knows his name, everyone knows his work: the At-at in "Empire Strikes Back," the titular dragon from "Dragonslayer," the robot sequences in "RoboCop," and some of the dinosaurs in "Jurassic Park."
Tippett helped revolutionize visual effects and stop-motion, as we recently saw in the excellent Ilm doc "Light and Magic." That documentary series shone a light on the artists behind the scenes that made the biggest movies of the past 40 years by mixing old-school techniques with cutting-edge technology, innovating at every turn. Though the documentary follows many people over the course of decades, one narrative stands out — that of Phil Tippett, his rise to the top, and then his fall once CGI starts dominating the visual effects industry.
Though we haven't seen Tippett's name featured prominently in movie credits for a while, he finally made the comeback he was due.

The film will continue to expand next month, including several screenings at Alamo Drafthouse theaters across the United States starting July 3.
“Phil Tippett is a towering figure in the animation and visual FX industry, and ‘Mad God’ is the ultimate, purest expression of his visionary genius,” Shudder general manager Craig Engler said in a statement. “Shudder is honored to be the exclusive home for his cinematic masterpiece, and we’re delighted to see Mad God enthusiastically embraced by our members.”

Hey, everyone! We’re back with a brand new installment of our horror and sci-fi home media recap, and if you’re looking to check out some fun stuff this upcoming Memorial Day weekend, maybe this week’s releases can help keep you entertained. If you haven’t had a chance to check them out yet, both Umma featuring Sandra Oh and Matt Reeves’ The Batman arrive on Tuesday via a variety of formats. Both Tobe Hooper’s Lifeforce and James Wan’s Malignant are getting the 4K format treatment this week, and somehow I missed the fact that there was a RoboCop TV series at some point, but that’s being released on both Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday. And on a bittersweet note, the Foo Fighters’ Studio 666 is making its home entertainment debut this week as well.

You may not know the name Phil Tippett, but you most certainly know his work. The VFX legend has been integral in the creation of some of modern cinema's greatest creature effects, from the animation for the At-at walkers and the tauntauns in "The Empire Strikes Back," to the dinosaurs in "Jurassic Park," to the robots in "RoboCop," and even the bugs in "Starship Troopers."
But while he was working on mesmerizing audiences with his work in "Robocop 2," Tippett was also working on an independent project that would become his magnum opus: "Mad God." This stop-motion descent into hell has been in the works for 30 years, dropped several times,...

In December 2020, “Lightyear” was announced as part of the Disney Investors Day, a presentation meant to drum up interest in upcoming Disney projects while assuring the market that, yes, 2020 was a very lousy year but there’s plenty to get excited about still. Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter explained that “Lightyear” wasn’t a new “Toy Story” film, exactly, but rather the film that inspired the toy that Andy loved so dearly. Instead of Tim Allen voicing the character, this version of Buzz would be voiced by Chris Evans.
While this seemed straightforward, the Internet was immediately confused. Part of this had to do with Evans’ tweet that immediately followed the announcement that read, in part, “Just to be clear, this isn’t Buzz Lightyear the toy. This is the origin story of the human Buzz Lightyear that the toy is based on,” and some fuzzy messaging around the announcement,...

Exclusive: Shudder has locked down rights to the critically acclaimed feature Mad God, directed by two-time Academy Award-winning artist, animator and filmmaker Phil Tippett. The experimental animated project 30 years in the making will hit limited theaters and debut on AMC Network’s premium service for genre fare on June 16.
In Mad God, a corroded diving bell descends amidst a ruined city, with an Assassin emerging from it to explore a labyrinth of bizarre landscapes inhabited by freakish denizens. The inspiration for the film came to Tippett, whose VFX work can be seen in such legendary films as Star Wars, RoboCop and Starship Troopers, during a lull in his schedule following RoboCop 2.
After sketching and designing a few creatures and sets, he and his stage and stop-motion team at Tippett Studio shot the film’s first few scenes, then suspending work on the project to focus on creating the groundbreaking effects for Jurassic Park.

Despite stop-motion animation mostly focusing on children’s movies nowadays, with Laika and Aardman leading the charge for the medium’s cinematic output, the animation technique has always lent itself toward horror. As films like “Coraline” prove, no matter how cute the puppets work their mere movements already make them creepier than hand-drawn animation ever could. Oscar-winner VFX artist Phil Tippett recognizes this, so his feature directorial debut

Phil Tippett, a visual effects pioneer who worked on Star Wars: A New Hope, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Starship Troopers, and more, has a stop-motion sci-fi horror movie on the way, and it looks amazing.
