He was 79.
His death was announced on Facebook by husband Luigi Camperchioli, who said Machray suffered from dementia.

Robert Machray, who starred as Orson Welles on the stage and played Fire Marshal Dobbins on Cheers in an acting career that spanned five decades, has died. He was 79.
Machray died Sunday at his home in North Hollywood after enduring two strokes and a brief battle with dementia, his husband, Luigi Camperchioli, told The Hollywood Reporter.
He also showed up on episodes of Operation Petticoat, Three’s Company, Life Goes On, Roseanne, Sister, Sister, Suddenly Susan, Profiler, The Drew Carey Show, Girlfriends, Criminal Minds and Parks and Recreation, which in 2011 marked his final onscreen credit.
Machray portrayed Dobbins, often the victim of pranks at the bar, on four episodes of NBC’s Cheers during seasons eight, nine and 11 from 1990-93.

We have sad news to report today. It has been announced that Martin Mull, the hugely talented comedian and actor known for playing Colonel Mustard in Clue, Leon Carp in Roseanne, Gene Parmesan in Arrested Development, and more, has died at the age of 80.
The news was revealed by Martin’s daughter Maggie on Instagram. “I am heartbroken to share that my father passed away at home on June 27th, after a valiant fight against a long illness,” Maggie wrote. “He was known for excelling at every creative discipline imaginable and also for doing Red Roof Inn commercials. He would find that joke funny. He was never not funny. My dad will be deeply missed by his wife and daughter, by his friends and coworkers, by fellow artists and comedians and musicians, and—the sign of a truly exceptional person—by many, many dogs. I loved him tremendously.“

The Phantom of the Opera is sometimes considered one of the Universal Monsters. I get it. From the 1925 version that gave us one of the most infamous unmasking sequences ever courtesy of the great Lon Chaney Sr., through the Hammer iteration with Herbert Lom, all the way up to the 2004 film that gave a lot of us our intro to Gerard Butler. Speaking of that movie, its inspiration and reason for its existence was the Andrew Lloyd Weber musical that premiered in October of 1986 and has had runs all the way through as recently as 2021. 1989 was the beginning of its U.S. tour and we got not one but Two Phantom movies that year. Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge is cheesy and may just be more well known due to our friend Joe Bob featuring it on the Last Drive In recently. Here in the JoBlo Horror kitchen today...

As the ’80s came to a close, so too did the first wave of the slasher cycle. While they would continue to be produced into the next decade, 1989 was the last gasp of a dying genre. Returning franchises and hopeful upstarts alike struggled to make an impact. We all know you can never really kill a slasher, but it would take Scream‘s reinvention of the concept in 1996 to renew broad interest.
Cutting Class, another ’89 entry in the subgenre, marked the directorial debut — and, as it turned out, sole directorial effort — from Rospo Pallenberg, who notably co-wrote Excalibur, contributed uncredited rewrites on Exorcist II: The Heretic, and served as a “creative associate” on Deliverance. Despite his pedigree, Pallenberg did not write the script; that was the work of Steve Slavkin, who would go on to create Nickelodeon’s pivotal series Salute Your Shorts.

Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, Jenn Adams weighs in on the dreamiest and scariest boyfriends the genre has to offer.
We’ve all dated our fair share of bad boys. They win us over with their dreamy aloofness, then just when we’ve let our guard down, they turn out to be monsters in disguise. Horror has a long history of these roguish young lovers, some so bad they commit cold-blooded murder. But they’re not all monsters.
Every once in a while, a cinematic boyfriend manages to be attractive, kind, and non-murderous, all while supporting his girlfriend as she runs away from the film’s true villain. There’s a reason that home invasion horror films like The Strangers, Them, The Purge, Hush, Don’t Breathe, Funny Games, and more rank highly among horror fans. The very concept of your private sanctuary getting corrupted and invaded by an unhinged intruder who means you grave harm is inherently terrifying. The realistic thrills of home invasion films can offer some of the most intense horror, and some of the biggest surprises when the formula is subverted.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to home invasion horror movies that unleash suspense, chills, violence, and stalker thrills. Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Brad Pitt has starred in multiple World War II movies, but only "Inglourious Basterds" is truly great. "Inglourious Basterds" successfully balances realistic moments with fantasy elements, showcasing Quentin Tarantino's storytelling skills. Christoph Waltz gives a standout performance, but Brad Pitt's portrayal in the final arc is also entertaining.
Brad Pitt has appeared in five World War II movies, but only one of them can be considered great. Two-time Academy Award-winning star Brad Pitt has appeared in films of varying genres throughout his acting career - From gripping thrillers like Fight Club and World War Z to biopics like Moneyball and 12 Years a Slave, from historical epics like Troy to romance fantasies like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. However, despite having a mixed set of movies on his resume, the actor has starred in some genres more than others.

Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Thanksgiving (2023).
Thanksgiving pays homage to classic horror films such as Halloween, Dawn of the Dead, Maniac, and I Know What You Did Last Summer. The film also references lesser-known horror movies like Cutting Class and The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover. The ending of Thanksgiving draws inspiration from My Bloody Valentine 3D and The Guest, leaving the possibility of a sequel.
While Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving might be based on a fake trailer, the slasher movie is filled with references to real horror classics and a few of the genre’s guilty pleasures. Director Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving began as a fake trailer sandwiched between Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof and Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror in the Grindhouse double bill. An ambitious flop, Grindhouse aimed to recreate the exploitation movie aesthetic of the ‘70s right down to the zany trailers that played between movies.

Peter S. Davis, the producer of the popular cult Highlander franchise, died in his sleep February 21 at home in Calabasas, CA, his son, Epic magazine co-founder Joshua Davis, told Deadline. He was 79.
Davis began his career as a Wall Street lawyer and launched his own firm in his 20s before heading to Hollywood in 1977. He produced more than 20 films during his career, including the early Brad Pitt starrer Cutting Class (1988), Joe Pesci’s Family Enforcer aka Death Collector (1976), and Sam Peckinpah’s last film The Osterman Weekend (1983). He worked with Bob Shaye and Bill Panzer to produce New Line Cinema’s first film, Stunts starring Robert Forster.
Above all, Davis is known for Highlander (1986), which began as an overlooked script written by UCLA undergrad Gregory Widen. Davis convinced Fox and Thorn/Emi to back the film in the early 1980s and recruited Sean Connery for the role of Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez.

Peter S. Davis, the producer behind the cult film “Highlander,” died this past weekend at his home in Calabasas, California, at the age of 79.
Davis was key to the creation of the hit 1986 film, having discovered the initial screenplay written by Gregory Widen while he was a student at UCLA. Davis gathered the team behind the film, including financing from studio Thorn Emi. But the biggest get for Davis was the casting of the late Sean Connery as Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, the immortal warrior who welcomes Christopher Lambert’s Connor MacLeod into the battle among immortals to gain an unknown but powerful prize.
“The Highlander” struggled when it was first released, but began to gain a cult following in Europe and later in the U.S. when it was released on VHS. Soon, the mantra “there can be only one” became a part of pop culture, with MacLeod becoming a star-making role for Lambert.

Karen Cogan’s “Fled” has come top of The Brit List, a league table of unproduced scripts from British writing talent, this year devoted to television projects. The list, similar to The Black List in the U.S., was compiled from recommendations by British production companies, talent agencies, financiers and broadcasters.
Cogan, represented by Independent Talent Group, received 20 recommendations for “Fled,” a darkly comedic drama in which a pregnant girl and a scared nun are forced together to find some kind of freedom in 90s Ireland. No producer is attached.
Cogan, who has seven original projects in development with television and film production companies, wrote season 2 of the BBC’s “The Young Offenders,” and was part of the writers’ room for Sky’s “Temple.”
Next, with eight recommendations, came “Only Child” by Ryan J. Brown, a crime thriller in which a grieving mother from a small town finds new life...

The Sundance Film Festival announced today that it will hold a series of panels titled the "Art of Film Weekend" which will take place Jan. 29-31. This new initiative should create more buzz worthy moments during a period when the Festival is traditionally winding down. The slate will kick off with a conversation between Festival founder Robert Redford and George Lucas that will be streamed online at Sundance.org. In a release, Festival Director John Cooper noted, "Exploring cinema, body and soul, Art of Film Weekend will take aspiring filmmakers and film-loving audiences behind the scenes to see the creative, collaborative spirit of artists at every stage of the independent filmmaking process that is so core to our Festival." A full rundown of the panels are as follows: Power of Story: Visions of Independence — Kicking off Art of Film Weekend, join Robert Redford and George Lucas—two iconic filmmakers who...

“Buy a Bag, Go Home in a Box.” You have no idea how thrilled I am to report that one of my absolute favorite horror movies of the Nineties, Popcorn, will get a fully-loaded special edition Blu-ray sometime around Halloween this year courtesy of Synapse Films.
For the uninitiated, Popcorn is a love letter to the golden age of b-movies in the guise of a fun slasher flick about film students putting on an all-night bad movie horror film festival; a master-of-disguise maniac begins killing them off during the show via twisted takes on old school movie theater gimmicks.
The true highlights are the fake movies-within-the-movie lovingly paying homage to the b-movies of the Fifties and Sixties: The Amazing Electrified Man, The Stench, and Mosquito!
As much as I’ve had a major soft spot for Popcorn since seeing it in theaters opening weekend, I clearly don’t love it...

Synapse Films has done a fantastic job with their horror Blu-ray releases to date and we’re happy to hear that they’ll be releasing 1991′s Popcorn as a special edition Blu-ray/DVD later this year:
“Popcorn, the 1991 cult classic starring Jill Schoelen (The Stepfather, Cutting Class), Malcolm Danare (Christine, Heaven Help Us), Dee Wallace (E.T. the Extra-terrestrial, The Frighteners, The Lords of Salem) and Tom Villard (One Crazy Summer, My Girl) is coming to Special Edition Blu-ray and DVD from Synapse Films, Inc in 2014!
This release will give fans a brand-new 2K restoration of the film, taken directly from original vault materials. Supplementary materials from Michael Felsher’s Red Shirt Pictures will round out the exciting package. While the line-up of bonus materials has not yet been finalized, it will feature a retrospective documentary on the making of and legacy of Popcorn along with more extra features currently in the planning stages.

Cutting Class (1989) Director: Rospo Pallenberg Stars: Brad Pitt, Jill Shoelen, Roddy McDowall Someone is murdering the students and staff at the local high school. But is it the stressed out jock. or the psycho killer just released from an insane asylum? Cutting Class may be best known as the first film to feature a young Brad Pitt, but don't let that fool you. At the tail end of last year, Gregory Burkart presented you with his top 10 favorite horror inspired music videos of the year, a gory collection of horrific imagery mashed together with delightful sounds; a combination that I personally can't get enough of. Be sure to go back and check out his picks, if you missed that post or just want to re-watch some kickass videos.
Today, I've queued up ten more awesome horror-themed music videos that I think you're going to like. So instead of sitting here and talking to you any further, I invite you to turn up the volume and dig in!
Franz Ferdinand: "Evil Eye"
This here is actually the video that inspired this whole list. Released just a few days ago, Franz Ferdinand's new video "Evil Eye" is an absolute must-watch, a blood-soaked ode to those cheesy '80s shot-on-video horror flicks that we all love so much.

Movie characters may seem more glamorous than you and me, but they've gotta eat. And you know who eats a lot in movies? Brad Pitt. And unlike the rest of us, even in comic moments, he looks good doing it (shocker).
Pitt did a fair amount of eating in his Oscar-nominated turn as Billy Beane in "Moneyball," but he chows down so much in so many movies, we're starting to wonder if the actor just gets hungry on set and brings his lunch into the scene with him. We're just waiting to see how much he ingests in "Killing Them Softly," out this week.
Movies Included (Click to Buy):
Troy | Mr. and Mrs. Smith | Moneyball | Ocean's Eleven | Johnny Suede | The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford | The Devil's Own | Inglorious Basterds | Across the Tracks | Cutting Class | Kalifornia | Spy Game | Meet Joe Black | Sleepers | Seven Years in Tibet...

Graduation Day is a high school slasher and there are tons and tons of these films out there... and oddly enough they are all virtually identical. From Cutting Class to Prom Night to Return to Horror High to Scream (which more paid homage to them than anything in my opinion) they all follow the same basic building blocks. Some horrible tragedy or prank perpetrated in the past gets avenged by masked killer. Many teens die multiple red herrings teenage sexual hijinks yada yada yada. You get the point.

We know all know Jennifer Aniston got her start running in terror from a tiny evil leprechaun in, you know, Leprechaun, but did you know that most A-listers have a crappy horror film lurking in their past somewhere? From Paul Rudd to Jack Black, Demi Moore to Amy Adams, the biggest names in Hollywood have at one point been covered in corn syrup blood and chased by a prop chainsaw. So enjoy 10 amazing actors and actresses who had to pay their dues at the business end of a fake meat cleaver. Our personal favorite? Julianne Moore. Can anyone name a dumber movie death than hers? We honestly want to know!
1) Paul Rudd, Halloween 6: The Curse Of Michael Myers (1995)
It would be so cute to see Paul Rudd carrying a baby! Unless of course he’s carrying a baby while sprinting down a hospital corridor to escape Michael Myers in this 1995 horror film.

Not all great cinema stars have the most auspicious beginnings to their lives in celluloid. Some start in commercials, TV, bit parts, background work. Hell, a few even dabble in porn (we're looking at you, Sylvester Stallone).
Ground zero for acting talent, more often than not, is the horror genre. This being Halloween season, we decided to highlight a few mega-talents who jumpstarted their careers in much the same way they entered the world: naked, screaming and covered in blood.
George Clooney, 'Return to Horror High' (1987)
It took the "Ides of March" actor-director a solid decade in show business before he launched into superstardom as Dr. Doug Ross on "ER." Good ol' Gorgeous George may have paid his dues at the school of hard knocks, but he earned his diploma from "Horror High" playing an actor who gets killed by a serial killer while filming a movie about that killer.

1989 wasnt exactly a landmark year for horror. I dare you to name one movie from that year that has become a classic. Sure, there was Intruder, but other than that, there are just a lot of movies that I personally enjoy (Cutting Class, Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, Halloween 5, Shocker, Return of the Family Man, etc.). Of course, there were a few stinkers in the bunch, like Elm Street 5. So naturally, I wasnt too enthralled…...

There are more horror films being made today than ever before in history. No, the studios might not be churning them out like they used to, but that has never been, as bookies are fond of saying, where the action was. It has been in the underground, on the fringes, and outside of the usual Hollywood influences. The reason Night Of The Living Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, and other first time/early efforts are so potent is because they arrive in front of audiences untainted, pure of the artist, and with the only consideration in their creation being…their creation. This independent spirit doesn’t need heaps of money to achieve realization, and as such, indie horror has been a gateway into “the business” for as long as cameras have been rolling.

Like you, we like movie stars. We flock to see their films, cheer when they win Oscars, and memorize their famous lines. But sometimes they forget to return the love, cranking out movies that are so god-awful we’re left slack-jawed, wondering how the hell the things ever got made. We’re not talking about high-profile trainwrecks like Ben Affleck’s Gigli or George Clooney’s Batman & Robin. We’re talking about the under-the-radar pieces of celluloid dreck that, more often than not, limp straight to DVD and quickly vanish into out-of-print oblivion.

You may have thought he was just pouting at the camera, but Brad Pitt follows a profound and complicated acting method
Unusually for a movie star of his stature, Brad Pitt has never appeared on Inside the Actor's Studio. Perhaps this is because he doesn't want to spend an hour of his life being fawned over by a creepy-eyed interviewer and a room full of drippy sycophants, but it's more likely that he's just very wary of revealing the secrets of his acting method.
Because, make no mistake, Pitt has an acting method. It's why he can flit from action to comedy to impressionistic, dinosaur-heavy meditations of the meaning of life itself with enviable ease. But what's the secret behind Pitt's style? Is it that he's really pretty? No. Well, yes, a bit. But mainly no. In fact, Pitt has a long and complicated process that's kept firmly under lock and key.

James Earl Jones in The Exorcist II There has been plenty of funny characters to grace movie screens in the horror genre. The patheticness of Roddy McDowell's character results in some good laughs or the absurdity of his character in Cutting Class which can be seen cross dressing at certain points of the movie. Speaking of cross dressing... you have the film Trick or Treats which features a killer cross dressing as a nurse to make it back to visit his son on Halloween?!? Zombies got in on the comedy as well as they were given a more comedic tone in The Return of the Living Dead Part II. Also, how can we forget about Randy from the Scream franchise? Comedy can be something unintentional or intentional as I demonstrated above. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. So which character from which film gets my vote?

Tremors? Nightbreed? Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat? 976-evil? Are all on the list this year. And though there were not huge horror wins in sound editing through screenplays, the Technical Awards never cease to bring out the horror veterans. Notably Tim Drnec who contributed to such VHS classics as Alien Seed, Destroyer, and Prison won for his work on “Spydercam 3D volumetric suspended cable camera technologies.” An award also shared with Ben Britten Smith and Matt Davis who both also worked on Constantine.
But among all the winners, the Academy also honored some great loses in 2010. And though they mentioned some of our heroes, Dennis Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Kevin McCarthy (Invasion of the Body Snatchers) and Dino de Laurentiis (King Kong), they did not mention Zelda Rubinstein or Corey Haim. But we will in this last section and the others lost to us last year.
So farewell fight fans and remember,...

Let's travel back in time before Brad Pitt was part of the Brangelina borg or even before Tyler Durden. Brad's breakout role was young paramour and parolee J.D. in 1991's Thelma and Louise, and Johnny Suede came just a few a couple of months after Thelma and Louise premiered at Cannes. (This was also a few years after Pitt starred in Cutting Class, an awesomely ridiculous '80s slasher flick that I caught on cable late one night.)
According to writer/director Tom Dicillo's blog, when the NYC casting director passed him Brad Pitt's head shot, "he'd done a small Canadian TV series and he'd just finished shooting what he'd listed as his only real film credit-something called Thelma and Louise that no one had heard about because it hadn't even been edited yet." And when Pitt came in to audition, Dicillo writes, "Call me an idiot...

After a busy day playing at the park and eating cupcakes on Saturday, Tom Cruise and Co. took it easy on Sunday with a trip to Starbucks and a lesuirely walk back to their Boston hotel.
While Katie Holmes enjoyed a caffeine pick-me-up, Suri, 3, went with a hot chocolate.
An onlooker tells People: “[Suri] treated her warm drink like it was a treasure, and she enjoyed small sips.”
Heading back to the hotel, the three were spotted by fans, some of whom asked for autographs — which Tom graciously obliged.

Hollywood Reporter I guess turnabout is fair play and Hollywood is always remaking Asian films. Zhang Yimou is going to remake the Coen Bros debut film Blood Simple. Er... good luck
Bright Lights After Dark reminds us that not everyone loves the legendary Pauline Kael as a critic. 'She didn't "get" the 60s' is the claim here.
Socialite Life Harrison Ford and Rachel McAdams to co-star in Morning Glory (not a remake of the Katharine Hepburn Oscar winner
Empire Watchmen getting rereleased... and it's even longer now? (gulp)
Topless Robot remembers the geek side of Farrah Fawcett's career
Twitch Audition, one of the scariest movies I've ever seen, is getting a 10th anniversary DVD edition with extras
Splash Page fan made Spider-Man 4 posters. Eliza Dushku as the Black Cat? Yes, please
Mike Lynch 200 characters from Dick Tracy. Does anyone besides me wish the movie version had had a sequel?...

Unless you’re a die-hard slasher completist, it’s understandable if Slaughter High is, as stated on the case of its “Lost Collection” Lionsgate DVD edition, one of those “movies you totally forgot about.” And if you do happen to recall catching it during its very brief theatrical release or via VHS from Vestron back in the day, well, it’s pretty much as goofy as you remember.
This very late-in-coming entry in the 1980s slasher cycle (completed in 1985 but not released till a couple of years later) starts with a protracted prologue in which high-school misfit Marty (Simon Scuddamore in oversized dork glasses) is tormented by his cruel 20- and 30something classmates, until one of their pranks ends with him being horribly burned. Cut to an undisclosed amount of time later, when one of those students, Carol (Caroline Munro), is now an actress turning down a sleazy movie offer from her agent,...

It’s time once again for horror at the Oscars. Sunday’s festivities were filled with folks who have worked in the genre and per usual, I feel if it’s a win for Danny Boyle, it is a win for rage-zombie fans everywhere. Seems like a lot of folks this year are veterans of Exorcist: The Beginning, Amityville: A New Generation and Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Of course, the most important genre win would be Greg Cannom, a staple of 80’s horror effects; he worked on such films as Fright Night Part 2, The Lost Boys and The Howling.
Now some movies on this list might be “kinda horror.” These thrillers or genre-friendly frameworks are on the ghoulish cusp and are marked with an asterisk. Some flicks on the list are there because, what the fuck,...

Pitt "Embarrassed" by Early Films
Brad Pitt was so embarrassed by his performance in movies Cutting Class, Meet Joe Black and Seven Years In Tibet, he's apologized to film critics. He admits some of his roles in the late 1980s and 1990s were not his strongest - and agrees with movie critics who claim his earlier work is not his best. But Pitt insists the experience has made him a much better actor. He says, "I believe I'm quite capable and we, as people, can learn to do anything, and that's proof of it! And my education is on film, on record! Now I can take on anything that comes my way and find truth in it an do a pretty good job."...
