While Bloodsport, the 1988 martial arts tournament movie, is widely considered by fans to be Jean-Claude Van Damme’s best film, it almost never saw the light of day. Indeed, according to Nick De Semlyen’s book, “Last Action Heroes” (buy it here), the film was deemed unreleasable by Cannon Pictures head Menachem Golan. The film sat on the shelf for fourteen months and was considered so bad that Golan intended to release the movie direct-to-video. Things got so heated that Golan refused to go ahead with a proposed sequel to Lone Wolf McQuade, which would have featured Van Damme teaming up with Chuck Norris (who was an early mentor to Jcvd). He wanted Michael Dudikoff instead.
According to the book, Van Damme, who had returned to his old job as a limo driver when Bloodsport wrapped, convinced the studio to allow him to re-edit the film with Towering Inferno editor Carl Press.

Sylvester Stallone is a brilliant actor, screenwriter, and director. Since the start of his career, the actor has consistently proven himself as a formidable one-man army and has made some of the best movies of all time. Yet, his career has not been without several commercial and critical failures.
Sylvester Stallone ([PC: Tulsa King | Amazon Prime]Also, having made some of the worst movies of all time, the actor once believed he never had made a movie that could lose money. While that is far from the truth today, Stallone once stated that if his career was on the line so badly, he could have made his Rocky Balboa an astronaut.

The ongoing Motörhead live recording series, The Löst Tapes, is being collected on a new eight-disc CD box set arriving February 23rd. In addition, a fifth volume in the series, Live at Donington Download Fest ’08, has been announced as part the box set and as a standalone vinyl release.
The Motörhead camp launched The Löst Tapes series in 2021, restoring previously unreleased Motörhead concert recordings sourced from cassette tapes discovered in the archives of the late Lemmy Kilmister.
“[Cassettes] were a standard part of every tour … Motörhead were certainly no exception, recording show after show,” read the press release for the box set. “They contain gold, pure aural gold, and had for many years sat hundreds of feet underground in a small cave Lemmy owned, guarded by small, hairy centurions in Roman armor with small spears and bad attitudes. 1990 was a peak year for Van Damage. The Muscles from Brussels was on the way to the big time after Bloodsport and Kickboxer (which made our list of the Best Fighting Movies) proved to be huge moneymakers at the box office. But, Jean-Claude Van Damme was different from some of his contemporaries because he was a hearthrob and a prime butt-kicker. His 1990 movie Lionheart was bought for distribution by Universal, paving the way to his breaking into mainstream studio work. But, before he could jump on that gravy train, he had one more movie left to make on his Cannon movie deal – but ironically, the company itself would not release the film theatrically due to its waning fortunes, with this being Van Damme’s first major studio release after MGM opted to distribute it. The movie? Death Warrant!

Masters of the Universe was one of three big-budget 1987 movies that sunk Cannon Pictures (the other two were Over the Top and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace). It was supposed to be their version of Star Wars, boasting a significant budget (for Cannon) and high production values. It was based on the toys and cartoon series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe by Mattel, but the film had a very rocky road to the big screen. While it’s now considered a camp classic, thanks mainly to the involvement of Dolph Lundgren, at the time, many thought that his performance helped tank the movie. He almost ended up being dubbed in the final cut.
Indeed, in the documentary Toy Masters (excerpted by THR), Mattel executives found Lundgren’s accent unintelligible, and director Gary Goddard wanted him dubbed. “We actually did bring in a few actors to loop test,...

This is what a gold rush looks like: With channels dedicated completely to “Heartland,” “The Rifleman,” and individual “Big Brother” 24/7 camera feeds, there are approximately 1,683 unique, free, ad-supported streaming television channels in the U.S. as of September 15, according to Stream Metrics. According to us, that’s a few too many. But we got here so quickly because ad revenue is more lucrative than subscriptions — and because creating a Fast channel is, well, fast.
Frequency, a company dedicated to the care and feeding of Fast channels, recently launched 50 channels for a customer on a major distributor. CEO Blair Harrison wouldn’t name the companies, citing confidentiality agreements, but told IndieWire that completing all 50 took “about a month,” with most of that time going to the contracts. Barring legal complications, he said, his company can stand up a Fast channel in about a week.

Pro wrestler Terry Funk has died, according to WWE and pro wrestler Mick Foley. Funk was 79 years old.
Along with wrestling, the highly respected performer worked in film, including multiple Sylvester Stallone projects as far back as 1978’s “Paradise Alley.” Funk also appeared in “Over the Top,” did stunts in “Rocky III” and choreographed the climactic fight in “Rocky V.”
Funk was also featured in the cult classic film “Road House” and Johnny Knoxville’s “The Ringer.” He also had TV roles on shows such as “Quantum Leap” and “Swamp Thing.”
Funk was best known in his later years for pioneering “hardcore” wrestling, which involves using weapons and sharp objects, such as barbed wire, to both simulate and cause actual damage in order to increase the drama in a match. This often involved copious amounts of bleeding. Funk was also infamous for wrestling multiple “retirement” matches before quickly coming back afterward.

New Delhi, Aug 5 (Ians) Remember the 1987 sports drama film ‘Over the Top’ featuring American actor Sylvester Stallone? The movie revolved around the world of competitive arm-wrestling. Stallone plays the lead role of Lincoln Hawk, a truck driver and professional arm-wrestler, and brought attention to the techniques involved with the sport to the fore.
While the movie did not become as popular as Rocky or Rambo in the USA, in Central Asia, it left a long-lasting impression on the people of Kazakhstan, a part of Ussr at the time.
Interestingly, Sergey Sokolov, Master Referee, World Armwrestling Federation, was among many who got inspired from the movie as a young kid growing up in the Kazakhstan region. So much so, that he decided to take up the sport professionally and become an arm-wrestling referee years later.

It’s actually quite a busy month for non-American programming in Amazon Originals department. Shows and movies like Deadloch, My Fault, and Medellín all originate from outside the U.S. and U.K. For the American and British crowd, however, the streamer is debuting two big tentpoles.
The first is I’m a Virgo on June 23. Acclaimed director Boots Riley’s TV followup to Sorry to Bother You will tale the surreal and satirical tale of a giant in Oakland. That will be followed by the more conventional (assumedly) fourth season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on June 30.
The real fireworks this month come from a ludicrously deep bench of library TV and movie titles. Give them a look for yourself below but if we were to highlight just a few,...

Sylvester Stallone has been a fixture of pop culture for some 50 years, and it began with "Rocky," one of Hollywood's biggest success stories. That is not hyperbole. Stallone wrote a script that took him from obscurity and made him an Oscar-nominated actor and writer with instant star power and a few million in the bank.
Hopes were high for Stallone. Roger Ebert, for instance, wrote that the young actor reminded him of Marlon Brando, who had played a journeyman fighter in "On The Waterfront." However, thanks to mindless vanity pieces like "Cobra" and "Rambo: First Blood Part II," it wouldn't be long before such a comparison was viewed with derision.
Still, people shouldn't forget what made Stallone a success from 1976 to 1982, during which he proved himself as an actor of intelligence, naturalism, and heart. A mixture of ego and '80s commercialism reoriented his dramatic foundation throughout the rest of the decade,...

Tom Whitlock, who wrote the lyrics for the rock anthem “Danger Zone” and the chart-topping love song “Take My Breath Away” for the original Top Gun, winning an Oscar in the process, has died. He was 68.
Whitlock died Saturday at a memory care center in Gallatin, Tennessee, a spokesperson at the Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home in Springfield, Missouri, confirmed. He had Alzheimer’s disease, friends told the Springfield News Leader.
Whitlock wrote both Top Gun songs with Giorgio Moroder. Their relationship began when he fixed the brakes on the Italian composer’s Ferrari.
“Danger Zone,” performed by Kenny Loggins, was employed for the opening scene in the Tony Scott-directed, Tom Cruise-starring 1986 action movie, while “Take My Breath Away,” sung by Terri Nunn of Berlin, inspired the filmmakers to shoot additional scenes with Cruise and Kelly McGillis months later.

When Gilmore Girls fans see Liz Torres, they see Miss Patty. Torres, who portrayed the salacious dance instructor, for all seven seasons, also reprised her role in Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. Torres seemed born to play Miss Patty, but she was also in a short-lived and long-forgotten Amy Sherman-Palladino project a few years before the premiere of Gilmore Girls. Her character was far less titillating and more practical than the ever-eccentric Miss Patty.

Liz Torres might be best known as Miss Patty on Gilmore Girls, but once upon a time, she played a character named Rose on a short-lived series called Over the Top. Fame showrunner, Amy Sherman-Palladino, served as a producer on the ill-fated series.

When Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav recently talked up Fast channels, calling them “a unique opportunity to increase our addressable market” (and possibly create a new home for HBO shows like Westworld), many people had the same reaction.
What’s a Fast channel again?
Short for “free, ad-supported television,” Fast is a live, linear and growing area of the streaming universe that has emerged as a complement to on-demand offerings. The multi-billion-dollar sector is inhabited by an eclectic range of purveyors, content owners and connected-tv players, among them Pluto, Tubi, Roku, Amazon’s Fire TV and Freevee, Xumo, Local Now, Samsung, Vizio and Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment. With inclinations akin to Zaslav’s, cable TV programmers like AMC Networks, Hallmark and QVC have made moves in Fast. The maturation of the business in recent years has offered some consolation for media companies hit hard by pay-tv cord-cutting...

Legendary B-movie director Albert Pyun passed away this week, leaving behind many glorious contributions to this column, including…
Cyborg (1989)
Director: Albert Pyun
Stars: Jean-Claude Van Damme, Deborah Richter, Vincent Klyn
Is There A Plot?
In a completely unimaginable future where a deadly plague and the collapse of civilized society have completely destroyed humanity, a martial arts mercenary hunts down the pirate warlord who killed his family. There’s also a cyborg occasionally.
What’S The Damage?
Cyborg has the esteemed distinction of being the last movie released by Cannon Films, purveyor of such B-movie classics as Superman IV, Over The Top, and Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo, before the company went bankrupt amid an SEC investigation. It’s a film that only exists because of two higher profile Cannon failures: a sequel to Dolph Lundgren’s Masters Of The Universe and, believe it or not, a live-action Spider-man movie. In the late 1980s,...

When Parade magazine revealed in 1986 that Sylvester Stallone earned 12 million to star in "Rocky IV," every studio executive in Hollywood ordered Tums in bulk. That sum, which equates to 32 million in 2022, doubled the per-picture salary pulled down by the vaunted likes of Dustin Hoffman, Warren Beatty, and Robert Redford. Arnold Schwarzenegger was only making 3 million back then.
In an industry ever mindful of overspending -- while gleefully overspending when, say, someone decides the Universal Monsters brand should be reinvented as an action franchise spearheaded by Tom Cruise -- the last thing studios want is for a volatile, highly sought-after star like Hoffman to learn their competition is raking in twice what they make. This is when budgets start skyrocketing. And, in 1986, an era where there were no sure things like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this is how an executive loses their job.
This outrage was sparked anew two years later...

Kimberly and Usman As Usman prepares to go meet the young relative whom his mother wants him to marry, Kimberly realizes she needs to pull out all the stops to show him how much she loves him. She sets up a romantic scene of candles and photos in their hotel room and proposes on one knee with two different engagement rings — just in case one didn’t fit, which it didn’t. “If marrying you is what will make you happy in this life, I’m ready to marry you,” Usman says. He never thought she would propose to him; that’s not even something he sees in the movies. Kimberly has one ...

Known for his high-flying kicks and flexibility, Belgian actor Jean-Claude Van Damme is trained in kickboxing, taekwondo, and kung fu. As a teen, he won the European Professional Karate Association's middleweight championship. Hoping to use his unique skillset to become the next big thing in Hollywood, he moved to Los Angeles in the '80s. Today, Van Damme is regarded as one of the best action stars of all time.
His impact extends beyond the world of cinema. He inspired the ring name for one of my favorite professional wrestlers, WWE Hall of Famer Rob Van Dam, whose look and high-flying maneuvers were identical to those of the "Timecop" star, so much so that I actually thought they were brothers. In a 2021 episode of "WWE Icons," the wrestler explained the effect the actor had on his career:
"When I'm down in Florida in '91 and '92, [wrestler-turned-promoter] Ron Slinker is running the [professional wrestling studio] Tampa Sportatorium.

“She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” which just debuted on Disney+, is arguably the most delightful Marvel Studios series yet. Created by Jessica Gao and starring Tatiana Maslany as the lawyer-turned-superhero, “She-Hulk” is effervescent and refreshing, a balmy tonic after the darkness of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and other, more somber Marvel Studios productions.
Most of this is due to Gao, whose sensibilities are so perfectly suited for the character that you’ll wonder why she hadn’t done a Marvel project before. As it turns out, she tried.
In fact, “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” was spawned, in part, from a pitch she made to Marvel Studios for the “Black Widow” movie. When TheWrap asked her about the pitch, she was reluctant, in case she wants to use elements of it for a future project. But she described it in broad strokes.

Stephen Colbert celebrated a milestone on Thursday’s episode of “The Late Show,” welcoming his first in-studio guest since the Covid-19 pandemic shut everything down: “A Quiet Place Part 2” director John Krasinski.
To celebrate the big moment, Colbert challenged Krasinski to an arm wrestling contest and, unsurprisingly, got his ass kicked.
The bit began when Colbert asked Krasinski, “How strong are you?” We assume the answer is “very,” since Krasinski is also the star of Amazon Prime’s “Jack Ryan” TV series, which requires him to credibly do action hero things on the regular.
That’s probably why Colbert’s wife, Evelyn, who has frequently appeared on the Covid-era socially distanced version of “The Late Show,” wisely advised against this. “This is not smart, hon,” she said, though she was also chuckling pretty hard at the whole thing.

Whether you love the Sylvester Stallone-starring arm wrestling comedy “Over the Top” or think, “eh, maybe I don’t need a Sylvester Stallone-starring arm wrestling comedy in my life,” there’s a new option that will be more appealing: Maureen Bharoocha’s “Golden Arm,” which that it should please every stripe of arm wrestling comedy fan. Aided by a go-for-broke performance by star Mary Holland — consistently the best thing in many projects, and here finally getting the lead role she deserves — “Golden Arm” might be destined for the same sort of cult status as Sly’s version, and that’s just fine for this charming indie comedy.
Written by screenwriting duo Ann Marie Allison and Jenna Milly, who make their feature debut with the film, “Golden Arm” ably contorts the usual sports film tropes — an unlikely contender, a big final match, plenty of personal demons — into a new take on the genre.

Expect the unexpected indeed. While the coronavirus pandemic has shut down Hollywood (and the world) the past few months, CBS is optimistic that production will be able to resume in the summer to not only bring fans new fall programming but one of its staples that is synonymous with summer: “Big Brother.”
In an interview discussing CBS’ fall lineup with “The Hollywood Reporter,” CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl says that the network is hoping to be able to film “Big Brother” and its newest summer reality hit “Love Island” this summer. “The key difference on those shows is the turnaround time is quick,” Kahl stated. “‘Big Brother’ airs live shows every week. ‘Love Island’ is essentially a one-day turnaround. If we can get into production, and we certainly anticipate that, we anticipate having those shows on this summer.”
