HBO Max has entered the streaming wars, and WarnerMedia is hedging its bets that the new platform’s massive back catalogue will warrant its premium price tag.
The AT&T-owned company’s new streaming service, which launched earlier today, boasts 10,000 hours of content from AT&T’s numerous brands and franchises, from the DC Extended Universe and CNN to the Turner Classic Movie catalogue and Studio Ghibli films. The platform is also home to the entire HBO catalogue — rejoice, “Game of Thrones” and “Westworld” fans — as well as all eight “Harry Potter” films and every episode of “Friends” and “The Big Bang Theory,” which WarnerMedia had previously licensed to competing distributors.
Though HBO Max’s catalogue doesn’t encompass every AT&T-owned release, such as the recent Harley Quinn film “Birds of Prey” or originals from the DC Universe streaming service, its library is nonetheless brimming with beloved releases, and...

It seems like every other week brings a new streaming service with it, but the May 27 launch of HBO Max is, indeed, a potential watershed moment. While presented as a branch of the existing HBO brand, it’s more accurately a WarnerMedia behemoth effort that unites the conglomerates many properties (plus a few original efforts) in one convenient place — that is, if you can figure out how to get it, let alone whether or not you already have access to it.
On its debut day, Variety’s chief TV critics Caroline Framke and Daniel D’Addario took a look through the new service to discuss its library, interface, and overall potential.
Caroline Framke: The first thing I did this morning was figure out how, exactly, to access HBO Max at all. In the months, weeks, days leading to this moment, the seemingly simple question of “how do you get HBO Max?...

The goal of any new streaming service worth its salt is consolidation. We’ve got a lot of major entertainment conglomerates now and each one of them needs a streaming home to consolidate its content on. With that in mind, WarnerMedia’s HBO Max is undoubtedly the biggest streaming release since Disney+ last year.
When AT&T acquired Time Warner and all its holdings in 2016, the newly-branded WarnerMedia subsidiary needed a place to house thousands of Warner movies, and other series, films, and documentaries from Warner-branded studios like CNN, TNT, TBS, The CW, Adult Swim, and much more. Enter HBO Max. Though HBO Max is named after Warner’s original premier streaming and cable entity in HBO, this is much more than just an “upgraded” version of HBO. HBO Max is the juggernaut WarnerMedia streaming service AT&T promised.

With the launch of HBO Max today comes a new batch of Looney Tunes Cartoons. The Warner Bros. Animation series honors both the long history that came before it and brings a fresh new energy to classic characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Marvin the Martian, and Tweety. HBO Max, WarnerMedia’s long-awaited streaming service, launches Wednesday with hundreds of titles, including beloved TV series, blockbuster film franchises and some originals created specifically for the new platform.
And while we’re willing to bet you’ve heard classics like “Friends” and “The Big Bang Theory” are among the offerings that will be available at launch, we’re also pretty sure you don’t know how many other shows and movies you’ll have access to on Day 1.
And, as a bonus surprise, HBO announced all eight “Harry Potter” films as well as “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” will be available on launch day.
Well, don’t worry, because TheWrap has rounded up a list of the biggest films and TV series will be streaming on HBO Max at launch so that you can decide if it’s worth the $14.99/month price tag, which is bumped down to...

There have been several different iterations of Looney Tunes (and by association Merrie Melodies) in recent years that have tried to update the classic cartoon characters with contemporary animation styles and modern day storylines. Most if not all modern cartoon comedy series today can trace their roots back to Looney Tunes. The acclaimed Warner Bros. cartoons famously introduced characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd, Tweety & Sylvester, Yosemite Sam, Marvin the Martian, Road Runner & Wile E. Coyote, to name but a few. Even after nearly a century in existence, the timeless characters and their simple but effective gags still have the power to resonate with today's audiences and make them laugh. That's an impressive legacy, and it's one that lives on, even if it doesn't …...

With “Scoob!,” Warner Bros. Animation launches a new Hanna-Barbera cinematic universe built around the crime-fighting Mystery Inc. teenage gang and its lovable Great Dane. The plan was to release the franchise’s first CG-animated feature theatrically on May 15, but, of course, the pandemic intervened, so it’s going straight to VOD instead.
Whether or not “Scoob!” taps as large an audience as DreamWorks’ “Trolls World Tour” remains to be seen, but, according to director Tony Cervone, a veteran of the Hanna-Barbera and Looney Tunes home video franchises, it offers nostalgic comfort food for quarantined families. “Sure, I would’ve loved a theater experience, but we’re in a weird time,” he said. “It’s a bummer. But because of that, there’s families at home looking for stuff to watch, and there’s something reaffirming and warm and fuzzy and bright and colorful [about ‘Scoob!’].”

Although Bill Murray is very well known for his roles in movies like Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day, the legendary actor wants just a little more recognition for helping his team win the final game in the classic basketball movie Space Jam.
As Bugs Bunny and Michael Jordan seem to get all of the credit, many of us tend to forget that Murray played himself in the movie and even directly played a very big part in helping the Tune Squad defeat the Monstars in the climax. Now, nearly 24 years later, Murray is looking to get his just desserts.
In Space Jam, Jordan joins a cartoon basketball team to help the Looney Tunes characters win their freedom. It all comes down to a final game between the Tune Squad and the Monstars, with the former trailing the latter by just one point and only ten seconds remaining on the clock.

The Spy Vs. Spy movie is finally moving forward with Rawson Marshall Thurber attached to direct. Warner Bros. hired the Central Intelligence director to take over the project. This will be a live-action adaptation of Mad Magazine's Spy vs. Spy cartoon strip, which has been in development for well over a decade now.
Ron Howard was previously attached to direct back in 2011 from a screenplay by John Kamps. Brian Grazer and David Koepp were set to produce, but the project stalled.
With Rawson Marshall Thurber on board as director, Spy vs. Spy will be produced by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer. One has to wonder if Dwayne Johnson will sign on next. The pair have made three hit movies together, including Central Intelligence, Skyscraper and Netflix's upcoming Red Notice. So, will The Rock play one of the Spies?
In addition to directing, it is believed that Thurber will be writing the screenplay too.

Looney Tunes has had a rather interesting 40 years. When their glory days faded, they started releasing box office films that acted as glorified clip shows. They made crossover/cameo appearances in a Disney movie. They spent a few years acting as torch-passing professors to a crop of teenage knockoffs. Then they did a movie with Michael Jordan that wasn’t very good, but is so weird that it’s considered a beloved cornerstone of the ‘90s. There were a couple of spinoff shows for Taz and Tweety, as well as a whole lot of embarrassing shirts featuring characters wearing baggy pants and backwards caps.
Things got worse when their Brendan Frasier movie failed to scrounge up interest. They became extreme space superheroes, Daffy became a different kind of space superhero, and then they tried some more modern takes on the Looney Tunes concept with mixed results. Though it did teach...

AT&T wants to use WarnerMedia’s HBO Max, which launches May 27 in the U.S., as a carrot to get people to subscribe or upgrade to its most expensive TV, wireless and internet tiers.
The telco on Tuesday outlined multiple promotional offers for HBO Max — regularly priced at $15 per month — that will be available to current and new customers when the streamer debuts next month.
First, as previously announced, those who currently subscribe to HBO through AT&T will automatically have access to HBO Max for no additional charge.
Next, subscribers of AT&T’s highest-tier wireless, video and internet plans will have HBO Max included, while nearly all other AT&T customers will get at least one month — and up to 12 months — of the service free depending on their plan. The telco’s customers can check if they will have access to HBO Max based on their plan in the MyAT&t app.

That last one already sounds better than James Corden’s show.

Last year the Overlook Hotel made its return to the big screen in Mike Flanagan's adaptation of Stephen King's Doctor Sleep, and now Warner Bros. is teaming up with Bad Robot to bring the haunted hotel to life on the small screen, as the streaming service HBO Max has given a production commitment to Overlook, a new series inspired by Stephen King's The Shining.
According to the official press release (see below), Overlook is "inspired by and featuring iconic characters from Stephen King's masterpiece The Shining," and "explores the untold, terrifying stories of the most famous haunted hotel in American fiction."
The show reunites the Castle Rock team of J.J. Abrams and Katie McGrath’s Bad Robot, Stephen King, and Wbtv, which is fitting, because Overlook sounds like it could be in the same creative vein of the Castle Rock Hulu series, as it looks to expand upon...

Scorpion from Mortal Kombat goes after Daffy Duck from Looney Tunes in the new animated movie Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge, and crossovers don't get much more bizarre than this. Known for pulling in his enemies with a harpoon before roasting the flesh off their bones with his demonic fire breath, Scorpion is perhaps the last character any of us expected to tussle with everybody's favorite cartoon duck. Still, with Warner Bros. behind the new movie, the door was opened for Daffy to make a cameo of sorts at the start of the movie.
During the animation sequence for the Warner Bros. Animation logo, Daffy Duck can be seen acting mischievously, bouncing around and making lots of noise. The cartoon duck learns quickly enough that this perhaps wasn't the best movie for him to try these shenanigans, as Scorpion himself bursts through the Warner Bros. logo moments later to utter his classic catch phrase,...

While it’s not a controversial opinion, given the cult status for the movie, James Gunn has announced he prefers Gremlins 2: The New Batch to the original Gremlins.
The director named Gremlins 2 in a list he posted on Twitter over the weekend of 36 sequels that he thinks are better than their predecessors. Other choices included Evil Dead 2, The Dark Knight, and Blade II, with the Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker also throwing in some more recent McU movies to the mix.
Preferring Gremlins 2 to Gremlins may arguably be down to the former’s scrapping of a rulebook that was already pretty loose in the original picture. Director Joe Dante agreed to return to the franchise after Warner Bros. gave him rare creative control, allowing him to experiment with what usually goes into a major studio sequel. Not a lot is known about Space Jam 2 at this point, aside from the fact that it features LeBron James in the lead role, with Ryan Coogler set to produce. But now actor Paul Scheer, who will also be in the film, has revealed during an episode of the Clip City podcast that Don Cheadle will play a villain the movie.
"Actually Don Cheadle, who I do 'Black Monday' with, he's the bad guy in 'Space Jam,' and he said LeBron's really great. He was great in 'Train Wreck' too."
It was previously hypothesized that Cheadle would be appearing as a celebrity friend of LeBron James, in much the same way as Bill Murray in the original Space Jam. But recently when asked about the role, Cheadle had said he could not comment on 'what' he could be playing.

The Snopes family were a collection of Southern-fried scoundrels introduced by William Faulkner in 1940’s The Hamlet. Over the course of three novels and several short stories, the clan proved themselves capable of just about any atrocity. They were so comically loathsome they could have been kissing cousins to Mamie, Mert and Bert: the Fleagle family – a slapstick version of the Snopes. Even the local sheriff is terrified of the Fleagles and a greenhorn census taker from the big city is about to find out why.

Even though there is a lot of doom and gloom when it comes to the entertainment industry right now, specifically on the movie side of things, we have a bit of good news. Especially for those who are nostalgic about 90s movies. Space Jam 2, at least for the time being, is still on track for a summer 2021 release and is being worked on as we speak, according to LeBron James.
The Los Angeles Lakers star is set to take up Michael Jordan's mantle in the long-awaited sequel. Filming took place during the NBA offseason but, since this largely involves the Looney Tunes characters, there is a massive animation component. And that seems to be the saving grace right now, as explained by LeBron James during a recent podcast interview. Here's what he had to say about it.

Space Jam 2 is turning out to have an even bigger scope than we thought. Having been in the works for years, we’ve always known to expect the sequel to reheat the premise of the 1996 original, with LeBron James stepping into Michael Jordan’s shoes to play basketball with Bug Bunny and co. However, leaked images have confirmed that the movie will dig deeper into Warner Bros.’ catalogue of iconic characters than just the Looney Tunes.
Leaked pics that have been circulating online reveal that a bunch of supervillains have a surprise cameo in the film, with the group including the Wicked Witch of the West, Bill Skarsgard’s Pennywise from It, Jim Carrey’s the Mask and even the Joker. As the DC universe is ripe with recognizable characters, though, it seems that there’s a good chance that some superheroes could appear in the sequel as well.

The original Space Jam was such a hit back in 1996 because it had a lot of fun dropping basketball legend Michael Jordan into the world of the Looney Tunes. Sure enough, the upcoming Space Jam 2 will follow suit by having LeBron James team up with Bugs Bunny and co. But just to up the ante, it looks like the semi-animated sequel will also throw in some other iconic characters from Warner Bros.’ library.
A couple of leaked images have been circulating online this week which confirm that a group of iconic supervillains will get together for a cameo in SJ2. These are the Wicked Witch of the West, Bill Skarsgard’s Pennywise the Clown and even Jim Carrey’s the Mask. And let’s not forget DC’s Joker, too.

We’re beginning to get more and more details on the upcoming Space Jam 2. We Got This Covered already brought you the news that Jim Carrey’s Mask as well as Pennywise will be appearing in the film and now it seems our scoop has been confirmed, as we’ve got a leaked photo for you which gives us our first look at both of them along with the Joker.
As we told you yesterday, Pennywise will be entirely CGI, but actor Bill Skarsgard, who brilliantly portrayed the character in the two It movies, will voice the role once again. The leaked photo, which is definitely a bit grainy, can be seen down below and shows us Pennywise in all his creepiness alongside the other two aforementioned characters.
So the rumor is that #SpaceJam2 will expand to other WB properties besides Looney Tunes. The Mask? The Joker? Pennywise? pic.

When Warner Bros. says “everybody get up, it’s time to slam now, we got a real jam goin’ down, welcome to the Space Jam,” they really mean everybody. Space Jam 2 completed filming last September, though given the nature of the movie, it’s destined for a lengthy post-production process and won’t hit cinemas until July 2021. LeBron James will be taking over from Michael Jordan, with the film directed by Malcolm D. Lee, a script by Creed and Black Panther director Ryan Coogler and a score by Hans Zimmer.

Bill Skarsgård did a fantastic job of terrifying children in both of the It films as Pennywise. The Oscar-nominated documentary shorts are not now, nor have they ever been, a laughing matter. But the joke that gets told most often, which has a nugget of truth in it, is that they frequently represent the grimmest category of any given year at the Academy Awards.
Recent nominees have vividly, heartbreakingly illustrated end-of-life care, the opioid crisis, the plight of refugees, systemic racism in the criminal justice system, and the Holocaust. These are not, generally speaking, films that you can idly eat popcorn to.
This year’s nominees, which occupy their own theatrical program this week via ShortsTV, also tackle heavy subjects and will also make any halfway-present audience member ponder important issues of the day. And yet, somehow, they’re a little less brain-meltingly sad than usual.
