Not many people can say Prince asked them out on a date in a memorable way but Halle Berry can.
The Oscar-winning actress recently stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where the host asked her if there was any truth to rumors that Michael Jackson once asked Babyface to ask Berry if she’d go out with him. “I don’t know, but I know Prince asked me out on a date,” she responded.
Berry said the legendary singer, who dies in 2016, actually asked her to go on a date using a piece of paper while she was at one of his Los Angeles concerts.
“I was at one of his concerts here on Sunset at the Key Club, and he had somebody come out with a piece of paper. And you know like kids do, you say, ‘Do you like me? Yes or no.’ I went, yes!” she recalled. “I mean,...

Tell me if you’ve heard this one before: After going on a hike and getting “really stoned,” Off! guitarist Dimitri Coats approached his friend and bandmate Keith Morris with a tall order: He wanted to make a film that featured the band… with the singer’s erectile dysfunction as the inciting incident. “I was a little worried (Keith) wouldn’t go for it,” Coats told IndieWire.
Morris, the legendary dreadlocked former lead man for The Circle Jerks, detailed his struggle with diabetes in in his 2016 autobiography “My Damage.” And, as he previously disclosed to Coats, erectile dysfunction (now resolved) was an early warning sign. In the film Coats envisioned, Morris never followed his musical dreams and became a defeated elderly porno store clerk who is inspired by a bout of erectile dysfunction to visit a “boner doctor”.
This leads to a hallucinogenic “antidote” created by aliens with the help of albino bees,...

Billy Ray Cyrus was just as much a part of Disney‘s Hannah Montana phenomenon as Miley Cyrus was. For example, Billy Ray wrote a song for Hannah Montana: The Movie that was about his experiences making the show. Interestingly, some aspects of that movie have aged in an unexpected way.
Billy Ray Cyrus wrote a song he called a cornerstone of ‘Hannah Montana: The Movie’
Hannah Montana: The Movie is the rare anti-Hollywood movie to come straight from Tinseltown. The plot line centers on Hannah Montana going back to her home state of Tennessee because Hollywood is supposedly too shallow. While in the South, she falls in love with a cowboy and matures a bit. The film champions Southern small-town values over Californian careerism. Who knows if Hollywood could make a movie like this today without sparking a major controversy?

John Legend welcomed Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz Wednesday night at the Democratic National Convention, performing a song by one of Minnesota’s greatest artists: Prince. Ahead of Walz’s acceptance as the party’s vice presidential nominee, Legend honored the Gopher state, where Walz coached high school football before becoming governor. (Legend previously participated in a Prince tribute at the 2020 Grammys, with a performance of Prince-penned Sinead O’Connor hit “Nothing Compares 2 U.”)
Together with Sheila E., Legend sang “Let’s Go Crazy” — the 1984 single by Prince and The Revolution, from the album Purple Rain.

Give us a D! Give us a U! Give us an N! Give us an S! Give us a T! What’s that spell? Dunst! Dunst! Dunst! Los Angeles was out in force this past Saturday night to celebrate the Academy Award nominated actress Kirsten Dunst and two of her films celebrating 25th anniversaries next year. Every year, Cinespia hosts a slumber party at their Hollywood Forever Cemetery summer screening series and this year’s pairing had the crowd jumping, flipping, and cheering with joy and ennui. Sponsored by Amazon MGM Studios, Cinespia was proud to present the 2000 films “Bring It On” and “The Virgin Suicides.” To add to the festivities, Dunst herself made a surprise appearance to kick off the evening.
“I’m Ta-Ta-Ta-Torrance — your captain Torrance! Let’s go Toros!” Dunst said, reciting her iconic cheer from “Bring It On” as she walked out to a raucous audience.

Sometimes, Hollywood makes twin movies around the same time. M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap has a snappy, exciting premise. It feels a little similar to another upcoming thriller. We may never know if one film was trying to copy the other.
M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Trap’ shares a lot with an upcoming horror sequel
Trap is about a serial killer named Cooper (Josh Hartnett) who takes his daughter to a concert by pop sensation Lady Raven (Saleka). Instead of being an inspiring tale about how Ted Bundy could have been a good father, Trap is a thriller where Cooper realizes that the entire pop concert is one big trap where law enforcement is trying to snag him. It’s a tight concept for a movie that fizzles out thanks to implausible dialog, a misguided lead performance, and a mid-movie twist that doesn’t work at all.

On the evening of Feb. 28, 1984, Prince was at home, watching Michael Jackson become the first artist to win eight Grammys in a single night, including Album of the Year for Thriller. When the broadcast was over, Prince turned to Bobby Z, his longtime friend and drummer for the Revolution, and told him, “Next year, that’s gonna be us.”
As both an album and a movie, Purple Rain was still unfinished at that point, but Prince had a good idea of what he had. The very idea of making a movie was inspired,...

Take your seats; the show is about to begin. M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap is now out in theaters, and so, too, is the soundtrack from musical artist Saleka Shyamalan, who plays pop star Lady Raven in the film.
Saleka’s Lady Raven (Original Music From The Motion Picture Trap) is out everywhere, giving fans multiple ways to experience Trap. Listen now.
In the thriller starring Josh Hartnett, “A father and teen daughter attend a pop concert, where they realize they’re at the center of a dark and sinister event.”
As the official trailer for Trap reveals, the pop concert is actually an elaborate trap designed to catch The Butcher, a sadistic serial killer who has been evading authorities.
Per the press release, “Saleka and her dad, filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan, had always shared an appreciation for music-driven films and long dreamed of a collaboration. They essentially built Trap from kitchen table conversations.

Prince took his stardom to new heights when he made a splash with Purple Rain.
Director Albert Magnoli’s musical drama starred Prince as the Kid, an aspiring musician from an abusive upbringing who navigates a rivalry with another performer (Morris E. Day) and a romance with a fellow singer (Apollonia Kotero).
Following the success of his 1982 album, 1999, Prince told manager Robert Cavallo of his big-screen aspirations. After facing resistance from studios, Cavallo produced the project himself, with Prince writing the songs and culling story ideas from his own journey.
Magnoli worked on the script with screenwriter William Blinn (Fame) but also encouraged collaboration from Prince’s friends who were cast in supporting roles, including Day, who fronted the band Prince put together. Recalls co-star Jerome Benton, who was the sidekick in the band: “Albert would ask me, ‘If Morris said this, what would you say?’ [And then,] ‘Morris, if you said this,...

Prince has been posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
The induction took place on Saturday, July 27th at a 40th anniversary screening of Prince’s Purple Rain at the Target Center in his native Minneapolis. His induction marks the second time the Songwriters Hall of Fame has awarded an artist posthumously after inducting the late Cindy Walker in April.
Prince was inducted by Gilbert Davidson, a longtime colleague of the musician, who then bestowed the award to Prince’s sister, Sharon Nelson. “You will always remember his songs,” Nelson told the crowd. “This is the award he wanted more than any other in life — to be known as a great songwriter.”

The Los Angeles Herald Examiner’s Mika Gilmore compared it to Orson Welles’ 1941 masterpiece “Citizen Kane.” The L.A. Even eight years after his passing, Prince remains a singular presence in pop culture. There are truly only a handful of people who, worldwide, can be recognized by one name (with Oprah and Cher also landing on that coveted list). Prince will always be remembered best as one of the most popular recording artists of all time, with chart-topping hits such as "I Wanna Be Your Love" and "Batdance" from the soundtrack to Tim Burton's "Batman," just to name a couple. For all of his many accomplishments, Prince's defining moment came 40 years ago, in 1984, when his hit film "Purple Rain" topped the box office, rocketing him to new heights of stardom.
For as much as the film was a hit, it was downright dwarfed by its accompanying soundtrack. With two number one songs in "When Doves Cry" and "Let's Go Crazy," the music permeated the greater cultural landscape well beyond the big screen.

Lady Gaga‘s “Bad Romance” inspired one of the best and trippiest music videos of all time. The director of the clip explained that it’s about people who are “kind of vampires.” Interestingly, “Bad Romance” didn’t manage to reach No. 1 in the United States — but it did inspire a Meryl Streep cover.

Jimin of BTS is turning heads worldwide with Muse, his ambitious and experimental new solo album. One of the tracks getting the most attention is the great single, “Smeraldo Garden Marching Band,” featuring South Korean rapper Loco. A big reason why Shaun of the Dead works so well as a zombie movie is because the characters’ terrible plans to survive the zombie apocalypse are so relatable. We can’t all be Brad Pitt with his muscles and helicopters, some of us would have to rely on whatever junk is lying around the house to save us.
Before they decide to risk life and limb to travel to the local pub, Shaun and Ed’s first brilliant idea is to weaponize their vinyl collection by hurling various records at the walking corpses in their backyard, before eventually giving up and grabbing a couple of blunt objects instead.
Director Edgar Wright and star Simon Pegg recently spoke with NME about the film, which celebrated its 20th anniversary earlier this year, and revealed that not every musician they approached was totally cool with having their work being violently hurled at zombies’ brains.

As chronicled in Michaelangelo Matos’s Can’t Slow Down: How 1984 Became Pop’s Blockbuster Year, pop music as a cultural force was already reaching new and unheralded heights as 1984 got underway. That was thanks not only to the resurgence of the blockbuster album, but also the sea change caused by the birth of MTV, and the emergence of Michael Jackson, Madonna, and others as avatars for the cable network’s new confluence of music, filmmaking, style, and celebrity into arguably the decade’s most powerful cultural flame-thrower.
And then there was Prince, who commanded, “Take a picture, sweetie! I ain’t got time to waste!” Even as the artist’s death in 2016 cemented his reputation as one of rock’s all-time legends, it’s still easy to underestimate how massive the impact of Purple Rain was upon its arrival in the summer of 1984, especially as its key tracks have...

39 studio albums. 97 singles. 33 Grammy nominations, with 7 wins. One Oscar. It’s fair to say that Prince was one of the greatest musicians to have ever lived. In 1984, the songwriting legend brought his musical genius to the big screen with Purple Rain – a semi-autobiographical romantic rock opera starring Prince as The Kid, the talented but troubled frontman of Minneapolis-based band The Revolution, who are regular performers at nightclub First Avenue. One night, he meets aspiring singer Apollonia (Apollonia Kotero), and the pair fall for each other, as The Kid gets to grips with his difficult family situation and musical ambitions.
The film won Prince that Oscar, for Best Original Song Score, and as such is packed with many mega goosebump-inducing on-stage sequences and musical moments – now available to watch in higher quality than ever, with the film receiving a 4K restoration in honour of its 40th anniversary. Madonna will always be known as the Material Girl. Ironically, Evita led Madonna to stop feeling so materialistic. She explained some of the reasons she changed as a person. In addition to changing her life, Evita also produced one of the Queen of Pop’s best and most underrated ballads.
The internal contradiction of Madonna’s reactions to ‘Material Girl’ and ‘Evita’
During a 2004 interview posted on Oprah’s website, Madonna explained why she stopped being the Material Girl. “There were many years when I thought fame, fortune, and public approval would bring me happiness,” she said. “But one day you wake up and realize they don’t.”
Madonna said that a certain movie changed her mind about life. “After I made Evita [in 1996],” she recalled. “I’d won a Golden Globe, I was about to have a baby, and life was hunky-dory. But I still felt something was missing.” The...

With two new movies premiering this summer, M. Night Shyamalan is expanding the family business.
The Oscar-nominated director’s daughters Ishana and Saleka told The New York Times “it was unplanned” but “it feels right” that their respective movies, The Watcher and Trap, are debuting within months of each other.
“I feel like in some ways we’ve always done that, since we were growing up, experience things together,” said Saleka, the 27-year-old R&b singer who plays pop star Lady Raven in her dad’s latest directorial outing, Trap.
She and M. Night took inspiration from Prince‘s Purple Rain as they conceived the idea of Trap together, a thriller about a man (Josh Hartnett) taking his daughter to see her favorite artist, played by Saleka. Additionally, Saleka wrote 14 songs for her character to perform, all of which had to fit into the film’s narrative.

By 1984, films like “Jaws” (1975), “Star Wars” (1977) “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981) and “E.T.” (1982) had firmly established the summer blockbuster craze, with Steven Spielberg productions leading the way. On June 8, 1984, two films were released simultaneously that continued the summer blockbuster trend, while also establishing new trends with their combination of horror/comedy and fresh marketing and merchandising strategies. Unsurprisingly, one film was produced by Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, and his “Gremlins” battled for the number one box office spot with familiar faces from “Saturday Night Live” who were now “Ghostbusters.” Their quotable scripts and at-the-time unique blend of humor and gore have had long-lasting effects on the film industry and on pop culture that continue to resonate four decades later. Read on for more about the 40-year anniversary of both “Gremlins” and “Ghostbusters.”

The drummer, DJ and Oscar-winning director is a key custodian of Black culture, with 200,000 records to prove it. So why does he think he’s getting too old for rap music?
With a sigh, Ahmir Thompson – better known as Questlove – turns his laptop around, so I can see the inside of his apartment, rather than the beautiful view of the New York skyline through the window behind him. It is a chaos of overflowing boxes and furniture covered with papers. “An ex-publicist of mine decided that they didn’t need their 8x10 photographs and old articles from the NME any more, so they gifted them to me,” he shrugs.
Thompson seems equivocal about this state of affairs. On the one hand, he can barely contain his delight: “Look at this!” he enthuses, showing me a newly acquired invite to the 1984 premiere of Prince’s Purple Rain movie. But, on the other: well,...

The top 10 also includes Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life; Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city (Deluxe Version); Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black; Nirvana’s Nevermind; and Beyoncé’s Lemonade.

The encounter is described in detail by David Pesiner in a piece for Rolling Stone that was published late Sunday night. Pesiner visited Kid Rock at his Nashville ranch last month for what proved to be a dizzying, multi-hour interview, during which the Detroit rocker discussed his embracement of Donald Trump and right-wing culture wars.
As the drinks continued to pour and Kid Rock became more intoxicated and erratic, Pesiner described a scene in which the musician pulled out a black handgun and waved it in front of Pesiner’s face “to make some sort of point.” “And I got a fucking goddamn gun right here if I need it!” Kid Rock reportedly shouted. “I got them everywhere!

The directors of the Cate Blanchett-starring Rumours, one of the movies that premiered this week at the Cannes Film Festival, confirmed at a press conference Sunday that the film is named after the classic Fleetwood Mac album.
Rumours — described as “dark comedy” about a group of G7 world leaders who get stranded in the woods, leading to debauch situations, Variety reports — doesn’t share much in common with the legendary band, but co-director Galen Johnson found similarities between the film’s plot and the story behind the album.

The first movie role for Prince – Purple Rain – is getting a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release this summer, for its 40th birthday. More here.
Warner Bros continues its support of catalogue physical media – and good on it for that – with the news that Purple Rain is to make its 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray debut. It’s arriving on the 4K format in part to mark its 40th birthday which, as usual when running these pieces, makes some people out there feel really old. Not me though, obviously. Cough.
The film stars the late Prince in his first ever movie role, and is as famous for its score as the feature itself.
It’s coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray on 24th June 2024 in the UK, in a set that will also feature a Blu-ray disc in the box. As such, previous extra features are being carried over.
