The Score featured an eclectic group of talent, both in front of and behind the camera. The movie marked the first and only time Brando and Robert De Niro ever appeared on screen together — in a project directed by Frank Oz, the legendary Muppets puppeteer and voice of Yoda in the Star Wars movies.

Cheryl Gates McFadden was a dancer before she was an actress. She studied theater in college (she has a Bachelor of Arts degree) and lived in Paris for a spell, performing with the celebrated movement coach Jacques Lecoq. In New York in the 1970s, she taught dance at various colleges, and formed her own theater troupes and comedy companies. In the 1980s, she landed a few high-profile gigs serving as a choreographer and movement coach on "The Muppets Take Manhattan" and "Labyrinth." She can be seen giving her commentary in a making-of documentary on the "Labyrinth" DVD.
McFadden, however, exploded in popularity in 1987 when she was selected to play Dr. Beverly Crusher, the chief medical officer on board the USS Enterprise on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." McFadden (who was just going by Gates back then) didn't get to do much dancing on "Star Trek," but she was given a mature,...

For people who didn't live through the era, it's a bit hard to quantify just how huge the Muppets were between 1975 and 1985. For five seasons, they were the stars of the beloved and wildly popular syndicated series "The Muppet Show," rubbing shoulders with celebrities like Liza Minnelli, Sylvester Stallone, and Mark Hamill. During that show's run, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, and Fozzie Bear also made the leap to the big screen with the absolute, stone-cold classic 1979 film "The Muppet Movie," which only proved how talented they were while giving the world one of the most instantly iconic songs in "Rainbow Connection." While "The Muppet Show" ended its run in 1981, the Muppets would continue making successful films, such as that year's "The Great Muppet Caper" as well as the end of the would-be trilogy of sorts, "The Muppets Take Manhattan." This 1984 musical comedy is set in the Big Apple and...

“Life is a cabaret, old chum,” a mindful lyric from the iconic Cabaret, performed by Liza Minnelli, perfectly encapsulates the vibrant spirit with which Linda Lavin lived her life. Alas, the world lost a theater giant on December 29, 2024, when Lavin passed away at the age of 87 due to complications from lung cancer.
Known to millions for her unforgettable portrayal of Alice on the beloved CBS sitcom, she was far more than just the face behind a diner waitress.

Frank Oz’s illustrious career will be celebrated by the Museum of the Moving Image with screening series “The Magic of Oz: A Frank Oz Retrospective.”
All 15 films Oz directed will screen, ranging from “Little Shop of Horrors” to “The Muppets Take Manhattan” to “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” and “Bowfinger.” Oz’s acting roles in “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Inside Out,” plus his character creations for “Sesame Street” and “The Muppet Show,” will also be part of the lineup. The series will take place from October 4 to November 30.
“Frank Oz has been a revered and adored artist for generations, yet I’d argue he’s under-appreciated for his filmmaking, which he’s dedicated the past 40 years to,” curator of film Eric Hynes said.
“From the beginning he defied expectations, starting with his now-classic homage to the Hollywood studio musical and B-movie creature feature, ‘Little Shop of Horrors,’ and continuing through...

Dabney Coleman, the character actor who delighted audiences in films like 9 to 5, Dragnet, The Muppets Take Manhattan, Tootsie, WarGames, Cloak & Dagger, You’ve Got Mail, and the TV shows The Guardian and Boardwalk Empire, has died at 92. I was a kid just as the drive-in craze was coming to a close. I can recall packing into our giant boat of a Chrysler station wagon and trekking out to see some first-run movies with my family back in the early 80s. I vividly remember seeing The Muppets Take Manhattan, Superman III (which terrified young me to no end), and Return of the Jedi on the massive screens of the Starlight Drive-In that stood for decades after the projectors were shut down and the lot converted into a gigantic swap-meet. Unfortunately, I was far too young to take in the legendary exploitation fare of the period. Sometimes I wish I had been born fifteen or twenty years earlier so I could have experienced the heyday of Aip, New World, and their ilk firsthand, but living through the dawn of the home video boom wasn’t a bad trade off.

The Muppet Babies say they’ll make our dreams come true but do they mean it? How long has it been that you’ve seen an episode of Muppet Babies? For some of us maybe since it went off the air in 1991 while the rest of us probably most recently caught it during its reruns not long after. And unless we’re talking bootlegs or VHS rips, that will probably be the last time we see the animated show. So what gives? Where are the diaper-clad versions of Kermit, Piggy, Fozzie, and the rest of the gang?
According to Guy Gilchrist, who worked under Jim Henson (albeit not on Muppet Babies), the reason we will never have the show has to do with rights. If you remember, the show would frequently incorporate clips of classic movies, TV shows and more as part of the Muppets’ fantasies, putting them in the...

This post contains minor spoilers for the "Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "The Inner Fight."
Throughout the fourth season of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," audiences have seen a mysterious white UFO, its motivations unknown, cruising about the galaxy attacking and destroying numerous alien vessels. Details about this UFO have slowly been revealed throughout the season, but its true secret remains. Who is flying it and why is it attacking non-Federation ships?
In the latest episode, called "The Inner Fight," it is also revealed that the UFO may be targeting specific Starfleet officers, again for reasons unknown. Captain Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) notes that one of the potential targets may be Dr. Beverly Crusher, once the chief medical officer on the U.S.S. Enterprise. Lieutenant Boimler (Jack Quaid), being intimately familiar with Starfleet history, immediately begins to geek out. He will get to meet the Dr. Beverly Crusher? He is giddy just at the possibility.

Star Trek: The Next Generation represented a watershed for the vaunted sci-fi franchise. It first premiered on Sept. 28, 1987, and ran for seven seasons: evolving from almost an afterthought to one of the best television shows of all time. More importantly it moved Star Trek from a one-crew series into something far more expansive, allowing numerous shows with all-new characters to flourish. In many ways, the franchise wouldn't have survived without it.
Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard serves as a reunion of sorts for the Next Generation cast, bringing many of the show's favorites back for a curtain call. That includes both the seven "core" members of the cast -- constituting the bridge officers of the U.S.S. Enterprise-d -- and a surprising number of supporting cast members, some of whom returned earlier in Picard. Together, they have helped define Star Trek in the post-Original-Series era.

The third "Muppets" feature film and, sadly, the last one that creator Jim Henson and puppeteer Richard Hunt worked on prior to their untimely deaths, "Manhattan" sees Kermit and the gang graduating from college and headed to New York City in the hopes of turning their humble little stage musical, "Manhattan Melodies," into a Broadway sensation. I've already gotten on my soapbox about how I feel "The Muppets Take Manhattan" doesn't get the credit it...

One of the enduring strengths of Jim Henson's band of Muppets is their ability to bridge generations. Kids can enjoy The Muppet Movie for its freewheeling, colorful fun — their parents can chuckle at euphemistic lyrics. (Rowlf the Dog's song lyrics about being tied down in a relationship come to mind.) Multiple levels of engagement create a truly unique kind of entertainment — but there's one film in particular out of the many Muppets movies that presents everyone's favorite band of misfits at their most adult. Frank Oz's 1984 musical-about-a-musical The Muppets Take Manhattan is the closest our favorite misfits come to truly growing up. With plot lines that revolve around finding a place to live and making enough money to buy a hot meal (particularly relevant right now), you might see this one a bit differently all grown up.

The Muppets are some of the few TV characters and intellectual properties (IP) to transcend their TV show and become more famous for their movies. After the success of their first three movies, The Muppet Movie, The Great Muppet Caper, and The Muppets Take Manhattan between 1979 and 1984, the Jim Henson characters transitioned to Muppet-themed adaptations of classic stories. These movies include their retellings of classic stories, such as A Muppet Christmas Carol starring Michael Caine, Muppet Treasure Island starring Tim Curry, and The Muppets' Wizard of Oz. Naturally, IP that is old enough becomes public domain, meaning there is an abundance of stories The Muppets can adapt without issue, but now with Disney owning not only the Jim Henson characters but also an abundance of acquisitions from Fox, Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm, here are 10 adaptations the Muppets could theoretically remake under Disney's banner...

The reason Gonzo is front and center in The Muppet Christmas Carol instead of Kermit has finally been explained. The 1992 film, which was the fourth theatrical venture for The Muppets, and the first since 1984's The Muppets Take Manhattan, was helmed by Brian Henson, the son of Muppet creator Jim Henson. It starred Michael Caine as Charles Dickens' iconic miserly protagonist Ebeneezer Scrooge opposite a cast of Muppets including Kermit as Bob Cratchit and Gonzo as the narrator, Charles Dickens.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Muppet Christmas Carol, Henson sat down with Entertainment Weekly for an interview about the holiday classic, during which he revealed why Kermit didn't take center stage in the film. He revealed that the idea for Gonzo to narrate the film came from screenwriter Jerry Juhl, and they seized on the idea because it presented them with the opportunity to spend more time making sure they got Kermit right,...

It’s been a big year for Prime Video. From The Boys season 3 to The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power to even the terrible games presented on Thursday Night Football, there were many hits to satisfy Jeff Bezos’ bottom line. How is the Amazon streamer planning on closing out 2022? Why, with another potential hit, of course!
Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for December 2022 is highlighted by the return of an old favorite. Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan season 3 premieres all eight episodes on Dec. 21. This time around John Krasinki’s CIA analyst will be dealing with a potentially nuclear conflict with Russia. The only other original TV series of note this month is Three Pines on Dec. 2. The mystery series stars Alfred Molina as Chief Inspector Armand Gamache.
Over on the movie side of things, Prime Video is bringing forward a major holiday tile on Dec.

At this year's D23 Expo, Brian Henson announced that his directorial debut "The Muppet Christmas Carol" would finally be coming to Disney+ in its complete and uncut form later this year. After a number of years of trying, the studio has finally found a way to properly restore the song "When Love Is Gone" to the film, so now it can be viewed the way it was originally intended.
However, "original" is a relative term in this instance because this beloved holiday classic that has become a seasonal staple for three decades was originally intended to be a TV special similar to the recent "Muppets Haunted Mansion." During the panel celebrating the film's legacy — and the new life it's about to receive thanks to this release — Henson shared the origins of what is regarded as one of the most faithful adaptations of Charles Dickens' iconic tale to date.

For decades, The Muppets have entertained fans all around the world with their wholesome messages, hilarious humor, and incredible musical numbers.
