Tess is an alcoholic experiencing ups and downs in her struggle to maintain sobriety. The bartender got herself into a bad fight that resulted in disorderly conduct and assault charges at the top of the episode, and she used her father’s Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) courtesy call to try and get herself out of jail. Frank was shocked to meet with Tess in the booking room; he wasn’t sure why she had Lenny’s favor given to him by the commissioner. He’s heartbroken to learn that Lenny’s cancer had come back, and he died the night before. Tess’ violent outburst caused by a rowdy customer was driven by her grief.

Everwood alum Williams first played Lenny Ross, a former NYPD detective and police commissioner Frank Reagan’s old partner, in Season 6’s “Back in the Day.” Most recently, in his sixth Blue Bloods guest spot, he appeared in last season’s “Irish Exits”; there, Lenny revealed to Frank that he was dying of cancer related to his being one of the first responders at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

Like so many before and after him, Frank Laloggia had a hard time when he first started out in the film business. Yet after booking several roles as an actor, the Rochester native seemed to finally catch his big break. He had been given the chance to write and direct a feature film. Severe studio interference was the main cause of his disappointment, and as a result, Laloggia took an extended break from filmmaking. Hoffman stood out as Eleanor Roosevelt in the 1983 and 1988-89 Herman Wouk miniseries The Winds of War and War and Remembrance, directed by Dan Curtis and starring Robert Mitchum.

She also portrayed Meryl Streep’s mom in Curtis Hanson’s The River Wild (1994) and the elderly Ruth, the mother-in-law of Linda Hamilton’s character who lives in a cabin at the base of the volcano, in Roger Donaldson’s Dante’s Peak (1997).

The Locarno Film Festival, long known as a safe haven for indie cinema, is taking a turn into genre territory while remaining true to

its origins.

“People know what the mission is for Locarno,” says the fest’s new artistic director Giona A. Nazzaro, referring to the prestige of the event — the 74th edition runs Aug. 4-14 — that is known worldwide as a festival of discovery.

But Nazzaro, an Italian film critic and former chief of the Venice Critics’ Week, now intends “to broaden the moral imagination of this mission,” as he puts it, by digging deeper into genre cinema, and “also into the [festival’s] relationship with the U.S. studios and what people would consider as [pure] entertainment.”

Significantly, this year’s Locarno opener is Netflix Original “Beckett,” a thriller toplining John David Washington as an American tourist who becomes the target of a political assassination while vacationing in Greece, and...

Year after year a site par excellence for the most innovative premieres—in that respect an antithesis to the ensuing fall circuit—the Locarno Film Festival returns triumphant next month. Their 2021 lineup, per usual, mixes iconic names with complete unknowns and, admittedly, a head-scratcher or two. Abel Ferrara’s much-anticipated Zeros and Ones, sure. However, new festival head Giona A. Nazzaro sees it as part of a steady influx, telling Variety “A festival can be quite highbrow and also entertaining at the same time. That is why for this year’s lineup we have selected several comedies and also some genre movies, as well as straightforward auteur films.” By that metric it’s more inclusive than almost any other major competition on the European circuit.

With Cannes right around the corner, two more prominent European film festivals announced their official lineups for 2021 this week. The 2021 Locarno Film Festival (the 74th edition of the event) is taking place August 4-14 and will feature the world premiere of Abel Ferrara’s “Zeroes and Ones,” plus the Melissa Leo-Frank Grillo starring thriller “Ida Red” from director John Swab. Perhaps the most prominent U.S. title in the Locarno lineup is “Respect,” the Jennifer Hudson-starring Aretha Franklin biopic that has already caught the eye of Oscar pundits here in the states. The film will screen out of competition, as will Ryan Reynolds’ long-delayed Disney-Fox tentpole “Free Guy.”

The Locarno Film Festival has unveiled a promising lineup combining edgy new works by established auteurs such as Abel Ferrara alongside plenty of potential discoveries by emerging helmers and global newcomers for its upcoming 74th edition.

It will be the first one under new Artistic Director Giona A. Nazzaro, the former Venice Critics’ Week chief who is steering the Swiss fest known as an international incubator and indie cinema temple on a more audience-friendly course.

Made famous by directors such as Dario Argento, Mario Bava, and Lucio Fulci, Giallo (an Italian term) movies are murder mystery/horror thriller affairs that have always had a cult following. Unfortunately, there are very few modern Giallo movies made so I was pleased to see Nightmare Symphony get a release… and be able to review it!

Nightmare Symphony, a tribute to Lucio Fulci’s Nightmare Concert/A Cat in the Brain, in which Fulci himself played a tortured horror filmmaker haunted by his own bloody horror film visions; follows a director attempting to finish making his film while someone or something is killing off the people trying to finance and help him make it.

If the title Killdozer is familiar to you, you may have seen it before. Originally a novella by Theodore Sturgeon published in the November 1944 issue of Astounding Science Fiction magazine, a Marvel Comics book in April 1974, and later appearing in The Mammoth Book of Golden Age: Ten Classic Stories from the Birth of Modern Science Fiction Writing (1989), Killdozer was adapted into a made-for-tv movie which aired on Saturday, February 2, 1974. Sporting the tagline “Six men…playing a deadly game of cat and mouse…With a machine that wants to kill them,” and billed as A World Premiere ABC Saturday Suspense Movie, there is little suspense in this overly silly tale of a Caterpillar D9 that is enlisted by a team of construction workers who have been assigned to build a landing strip for an oil drilling company on an island near Africa.

Billy Goldenberg, the Emmy-winning composer and songwriter, died Monday night at his home in New York City. He was 84.

Goldenberg wrote the themes for such 1970s TV series as “Kojak,” “Harry O” and “Rhoda,” composed the pilot scores for “Night Gallery” and “Columbo,” and won Emmys for the TV-movie “Queen of the Stardust Ballroom” and miniseries “The Lives of Benjamin Franklin,” “King” and “Rage of Angels.”

He expanded his 1975 “Queen of the Stardust Ballroom” song score, with lyricists Marilyn and Alan Bergman, into the score of the 1978 Broadway musical “Ballroom,” directed and choreographed by Michael Bennett of “A Chorus Line” fame. It earned eight Tony nominations including Best Musical.

For the final week of home media releases in September, genre fans have a lot to get excited over, as we have a multitude of titles coming our way on Tuesday. In terms of recent releases, the Child’s Play remake will hit multiple formats, and both the Jacob’s Ladder remake and the possession thriller Luz (which is Incredible) are heading to DVD as well. As far as classic horror titles being resurrected this week, Scream Factory is keeping busy with both Fear No Evil (1981) and John Carpenter’s Vampires, and Arrow Video has put together some special edition releases for The Hills Have Eyes Part 2, In the Aftermath, as well as both Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser II (both of which has previously been released by Arrow as part of their Scarlet Box set).

A high school student literally raises hell in 1981's Fear No Evil, the feature film debut from Frank Laloggia (Lady in White). Ahead of its September 24th Blu-ray release from Scream Factory, the full list of special features for Fear No Evil have been revealed, including two new interviews.

I was never a strong student in high school, and it was completely for lack of trying; I had smart teachers with good intentions who tried their best to impart knowledge that I simply felt I had no use for. Ignorance, thy name is Scott and I’m certainly not proud of it. Anyway, I definitely never had the roadblocks facing the good students of Class of 1984 (1982), Mark L. Lester’s mesmerizing, brutal, dystopian look at the very worst of the educational system through the eyes of a teacher trying to wade his way through a barrel of diseased apples.

Distributed by United Film Distribution Company stateside in August with a world wide rollout continuing into ’83, Class of 1984 certainly rang some bells in the press; some critics offered effusive praise (such as Roger Ebert), while others were less kind. The film did bring in nearly seven million; which isn’t bad,...

As a first time filmmaker, it takes a lot of courage to not follow the trends. The early ‘80s were flooded with slashers, and for good reason; they were, for the most part, instant ATMs to the studios. Thank God then (or Satan, your florist, a masseuse, whatever floats your boat) for Frank Laloggia, a New Yorker in his mid-20s who decided to go epic out of the gate with Fear No Evil (1981), a parable on Good Versus Evil, capital letters, with a strong Catholic bent filtered through Carrie’s prom dress.

Filmed in 1979 with initial funding coming from Laloggia and the rest from Avco Embassy (who ended up releasing it), this January release found little love from critics (except for Variety) but did pick up the Saturn Award for Best Low Budget Film – and well earned, indeed.
