Richard Chamberlain, the handsome leading man who thrilled women as the young star of Dr. Kildare and then centered the epic, melodramatic miniseries Shogun and The Thorn Birds, has died. He was 90.
Chamberlain died Saturday night in Waimanalo, Hawaii, of complications following a stroke, publicist Harlan Boll told The Hollywood Reporter. He was two days shy of his 91st birthday.
“Our beloved Richard is with the angels now,” Chamberlain’s longtime partner, Martin Rabbett, said in a statement. “He is free and soaring to those loved ones before us. How blessed were we to have known such an amazing and loving soul. Love never dies. And our love is under his wings lifting him to his next great adventure.”

When it comes to British historical dramas, very few can be said to have matched the popularity attained by Peaky Blinders, so it’s understandable why fans were excited for series creator Steven Knight’s latest venture, A Thousand Blows. Set in the underworld of late 19th century London, the six-episode series focuses on the real-life all-female thieves gang, The Forty Elephants, and highlights the transition period of boxing. A Thousand Blows is engaging enough to keep its viewers hooked throughout, and aside from a solid script and the authentic recreation of historical settings, a colorful ensemble of characters proved to be the major reason behind that. With a second season already greenlit, there is a possibility of the series gaining a cult following in the near future, and the continuation of a proper arc of the players involved will be something to look forward to.

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon is reaching back into late-night TV history to find a temporary replacement for The Roots. The NBC show announced a familiar face is returning to TV later this month.
Musician Paul Shaffer will fill in for The Roots on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon beginning next week. Jimmy Fallon's usual band will be busy rehearsing for the concert special put on as part of Saturday Night Live's 50th anniversary.
Shaffer made his mark in late-night TV leading The World's Most Dangerous Band on Late Night with David Letterman and Late Show with David Letterman. The musician revealed to Billboard that the Dangerous Band will join him on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon for four shows.
The Roots are perhaps the most talented band on the planet, let alone in late-night TV. So it's no easy task for anyone to replace them.

Netflix offers another true crime series where the filmmakers put the media on trial. The most current example is American Manhunt: O.J. Simpson, a series that, by the third episode, points fingers at the salacious nature of the case, which was perfect for the dawn of putting a trial on television.
However, the series offers eye-opening, fair treatment from both sides of the aisle. It correctly shows that putting the trial on television affected both sides. From the prosecutors to the defense attorneys, from the judge to the jury, everyone thought and acted differently because of it.
That makes American Manhunt: O.J. Simpson so compelling, gripping, and, at times, jaw-dropping. This behind-the-scenes true crime docuseries, the first original from Netflix on the case, pulls back the curtain on the maneuvering and explains why the infamous Hall of Fame football player was charged but never convicted.

Once upon a time — before binge-watching and endless streaming queues — the 1980s reigned supreme as television’s wild, experimental playground.
It was the decade that dared to push boundaries, experiment with formats, and redefine what TV could be.
Without it, today’s streaming giants might not even exist.
Cheers (NBC/Screenshot)
From sitcoms that perfected character-driven comedy to serialized dramas that kept audiences glued to their seats, the DNA of streaming owes more to the ‘80s than we often acknowledge.
Think about it: episodic storytelling, serialized sagas, groundbreaking miniseries, and programming for niche audiences — it all started in this golden age.
If streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney+, and Hulu are the cool kids of today’s TV world, the ‘80s were the trailblazing parents who laid the groundwork.

Show business is notoriously tough — and before actors make it big, they end up taking small parts to get by. It's inevitable, and if an aspiring actor doesn't book something super lucrative like, say, a national commercial (which can provide solid payouts every time they air), they probably turn to background work to make ends meet and get some exposure. All of this is to say that, if you're enjoying a slightly older movie or TV show, you might see a familiar face in a background scene from time to time. So, which of your favorite famous actors worked as an extra before they got their big break?
From an actor who eventually became a duchess to a handful of Oscar winners to the star of a breakout Netflix hit, here are just a few performers you can spot in the background or in small roles from their early days in the industry.

It’s not an exaggeration to call Nicole Avant one of L.A.’s most influential political figures. A former U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas, she’s been a top bundler for the Democratic Party for more than 20 years — getting Hollywood’s wealthy progressives to open their wallets for Barack Obama, Gavin Newsom, Kamala Harris, Joe Biden and many, many others. But if you’re looking for a shoulder to cry on about the recent election, she’ll probably tell you to save your tears. “People have to understand that no matter how much you might want something or think that it’s right, it doesn’t always happen,” says Avant. “I hope people really look at themselves right now.”
Sitting in the ballroom turned salon of the Hancock Park estate she shares with her husband, Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos, Avant is even-keeled about the nation’s recent swing to the right.

Although Kerry Washington finds the fact that she’s receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame “surreal,” her father, Earl Washington, thinks she should’ve gotten a star a lot sooner.
“Anytime he would hear that somebody was getting one, he was like, ‘Why don’t you have one?’” Washington tells Variety, laughing as she recounts their conversations. “I was like, ‘I don’t know, Dad. I don’t make those decisions.’ So I feel like he’s manifested this moment. I’m excited that I get to share it with him.”
Washington’s father is right. She could’ve been honored anytime in her nearly 25-year career — with a resume highlighted by standout turns in films like “Save the Last Dance,” “The Last King of Scotland,” “She Hate Me” and “Ray,” all before she landed the role of D.C. fixer Olivia Pope on ABC’s “Scandal.

Hollywood A-lister Will Smith emotionally paid tribute online to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Airs own Quincy Jones, following the award-winning producer and composer's death on Sunday, Nov. 3. Smith, who was not by any means a full-fledged actor when he began his run on NBCs Fresh Prince sitcom, landed his own on-screen character in no small part thanks to Jones. Smith shared his emotional tribute to Jones on social media via his Instagram account:
Quincy Jones is the true definition of a Mentor, a Father and a Friend. He pointed me toward the greatest parts of myself. He defended me. He nurtured me. He encouraged me. He inspired me. He checked me when he needed to. He let me use his wings until mine were strong enough to fly.

Quincy Jones, producer of several of the best-selling albums of all time, died at his home in Bel Air on Sunday as per his publicist. Though his work covered all genres, Jones will forever be best known for helping coronate the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, by helping craft Jackson’s infectious and highly lucrative sound across three classic albums: Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad. In 1985, he produced the “We Are The World” session, arguably the apex of 1980s pop music.
Jones, who in 1968 became the first African-American nominated for a Best Original Song Academy Award with “The Eyes of Love,” received an astonishing 80 Grammy nominations and 28 Grammy Awards throughout his career. Around the time of starring in the first Deadpool as the titular hero's blind roommate, Al, Uggams also started to enjoy a resurgence with her recurring role in Empire as the mother to Terrence Howard's Lucious Lyon.
Deadpool & Wolverine's story picks up six years after the events of its predecessor, with Ryan Reynolds' Wade having been dumped by Vanessa and moved back in with Blind Al. During the titular hero's birthday party, he's taken by the Time Variance Authority and learns that...

Who doesn’t love LeVar Burton? He was Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Chief Engineer Geordi Laforge, Kunta Kinte in the acclaimed ‘70s TV miniseries Roots and, of course, he taught generations of kids that reading is cool, so long as it’s on television.
This week, the Reading Rainbow host was presented with a National Humanities Medal, which “honors individuals or groups whose work has deepened the nation’s understanding of the humanities,” for his “acting and literacy advocacy work.” The medal was presented to Burton during a private ceremony at the White House.
Despite the fact that he’s now been feted by the President of the United States, some people are still quizzing Burton about a silly show that once explored the corpo-humanization of the Subway empire.

Peter Yates' "Bullitt" is one of the most stylish cop flicks ever made. Those multi-screen opening credits designed by the great Pablo Ferro, that jazzily urbane Lalo Schifren score, those wildly cool outfits donned by Steve McQueen at the height of his laconic sexiness (some inspired by the suits sported by real life detective Dave Toschi) –- it's a stone groove punctuated by spasms of violence and, of course, a raucous car chase through the hilly streets of San Francisco. It's so ineffably pleasurable, you don't mind that the narrative is a sketchily plotted afterthought. Who needs an intricately structured story when you're watching, as Quentin Tarantino wrote in his book "Cinema Speculation," "one of the best directed movies ever made?"
You throw on "Bullitt" for the 1968-ness of it all (it's the apolitical flip-side of the coin to Haskell Wexler's roiling docudrama "Medium Cool"), as well as the...

The following reveals spoilers for Futurama Season 12, Episode 9, "The Futurama Mystery Liberry," now streaming on Hulu.
Futurama takes great delight in mocking Star Trek, whose prominence and standing in the science fiction genre makes it far too tempting a target to resist. Figures like Zapp Branigan exist as riffs on prominent Star Trek characters like James T. Kirk, and the show's loose format matches the "planet with a problem" format of Star Trek: The Original Series. Futurama takes particular delight in using its concept of celebrity heads that are kept cryogenically alive into the 31st century, to give prominent cast members a chance to make a cameo. Notably, Season 4, Episode 12, "Where No Fan Has Gone Before" included five members of the original cast, along with Star Trek: The Next Generation actor Jonathan Frakes.

LeVar Burton shared his thoughts on the late John Amos during an appearance on ABC’s The View today, praising his Roots costar – they played the enslaved person Kunta Kinte at different points in the character’s life – for his groundbreaking TV portrayal on Good Times.
“James Evans, the character that John played on Good Times, was the first Black man as householder on TV,” Burton said. “The whole family, the father making it work for the family. When I was coming up Black men were generally portrayed as absent fathers, shiftless, fodder for prison and criminals. And John Amos changed that. May his name forever be blessed.”
“And it will,” responded View moderator Whoopi Goldberg.
Amos died August 21 at the age of 84. His death was announced on October 1 by his son Kelly Christopher Amos. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office, Amos died of congestive heart failure.

The passing of John Amos has been a reminder of his historic starring role in one of the more unlikely Disney live-action hits ever!
The news that John Amos died in August at the age of 84 has led to some looks back at his long acting career. Breaking out as weatherman Gordy Howard on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Amos took the lead role in the hit comedy Good Times. After leaving the show following a beef with the producers, Amos starred in the Emmy-winning mini-series Roots.
After that, Amos was a familiar face on TV and in movies, with notable appearances in Coming To America, Die Hard 2, The West Wing, Men in Trees, and more. Yet amid all that, it's easy to forget Amos' starring role in one the weirder Disney films of a weird period.

Losing a beloved family member is always difficult, but there’s a wrinkle in John Amos‘ passing that makes his death a bit odd. Amos’ daughter said on Tuesday that she learned of her 84-year-old father’s death not through private channels but through media reports.

“This should be a time of honoring and celebrating his life, yet we are struggling to navigate the wave of emotions and uncertainties surrounding his passing. Still, there is some semblance of peace in knowing my father is finally free,” Shannon Amos continued. She then went on to note that she and her family “deeply appreciate the outpouring of love, calls and texts.
