Audrey Hepburn was persuaded to take the role of Marian, in part, from the insistence of her sons, Sean Hepburn Ferrer and Luca Dotti. Once the boys learned that Sir Sean Connery had been cast as Robin Hood, they begged their mother to take the part, so she could act with "James Bond". She happily complied.

Denholm Elliott's widow detailed some of what occurred during the production. She remarked that Sir Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn were perfectly manageable. It was Robert Shaw, Nicol Williamson, and Richard Harris who caused the tension, according to her book about her late husband. All hell would be let loose if and when all three actors would be alone together, sober or otherwise.

Esmond Knight lost an eye in active service at sea during the Battle of the Denmark Strait in 1941. For his role as the one-eyed Old Defender in the opening scenes, he removed his glass eye.

Richard the Lionheart died from an arrow shot into his neck while besieging a castle, exactly as portrayed in this film. He was not wearing armor because he felt he had no need to.
