Before he started filling up the nation's drug store book racks with tawdry tales of romance and suspense, Sidney Sheldon was one of Hollywood and Broadway's most prolific writers. He could write comedies, musicals, musical-comedies, mysteries, dramas, thrillers ... just about everything short of slasher flicks (though he probably would've knocked out one of those had they been a thing during his 1940s - '60s heyday). Clearly, he had an ear for what worked, and he wasn't just knocking out quickie programmers. He won a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for the Cary Grant-Myrna Loy-Shirley Temple screwball hit "The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer," and earned a Best Musical Tony for the Gwen Verdon-led Broadway smash "Redhead."

And when television came calling, rather than turn up his nose as many of his established film and theater colleagues did during the medium's early days, he enthusiastically picked up the phone.

Lucky for Ken Loach and his Jimmy's Hall that the most deluxe of festivals treats all films as equals which is apt because the competition entries are proving hard to separate this year

It is early evening at the Cannes film festival, and the umpteenth suited-and-booted world premiere is already under way. From the terrace at the back of the Palais, I see the people carriers line up and the dignitaries emerge: the men in dickie-bows, the women in designer finery. One golden, tottering beauty has opened her handbag and let her iPhone fall out. The woman hasn't noticed, she walks on oblivious. But then, crisis averted. A handsome young prince has now spotted her phone. He scoops it up and chases her down as she reaches the car. The pair then embrace. We could be watching the climactic scene from Cinderella: The Eurotrash Remake. All that's missing is the orchestral score.

Los Angeles (January 15, 2013) – Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment announced today its partnership with the ultimate film discussion website, Home Theater Forum, for a one-of-a-kind campaign, Voice Your Choice, allowing film enthusiasts to decide which classic films they would like to see digitally restored and transferred to Blu-ray for the very first time. The program celebrates Fox’s most notable films from the 1930’s thru the 1960’s featuring performances by famous actors such as Henry Fonda, Shirley Temple, Paul Newman, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, John Wayne and more. Throughout the campaign, fans will also have the opportunity to write in and submit additional titles.

Seattle – Dalton Trumbo was one of the biggest names in screenwriting who for the longest time wasn’t allowed to show his name on the screen. He won two Oscars, but wasn’t allowed to step onto the stage.

At the peak of his career in 1947, he was brought before the House Un-American Activities Committee to testify about communists in Hollywood films. Like other screenwriters before the Huac, he refused to answer the questions. Their decision to not name names got them blacklisted in the industry and sent to prison. After nearly a year behind bars, Dalton secretly returned to screenwriting. He used fake names and front writers on various project. It wasn’t till 1960 when his name accompanied Exodus and Spartacus that the blacklist was broken.

I can't begin to imagine why any of you aren't already watching this brilliantly hilarious sitcom, but 30 Rock - Season Three is available to those of you who haven't been converted (as well as those who need repeated viewings to catch all of the rapid-fire gags).

This season contains two of my favorite episodes—"Believe in the Stars," in which a prescription-drug–addled Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) shares a flight from Chicago with Oprah Winfrey, and "Reunion," where Liz begrudgingly attends her high-school reunion to discover that she wasn't a picked-on nerd, as she'd remembered, but actually a bully.

Movie mogul Martin Scorsese has joined the list of celebrities paying tribute to movie icon Paul Newman, stating the history of film is "unthinkable" without the late actor.

The moviemaker directed Newman in The Color of Money, and recalls fondly the "precious" memories he has of working with the icon, who lost his battle with cancer on Friday.

He says, "It's a great loss, in so many ways. The history of movies without Paul Newman? It's unthinkable. His presence, his beauty, his physical eloquence, the emotional complexity he could conjure up and transmit through his acting in so many movies - where would we be without him?

"In From the Terrace or The Hustler or Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid or The Verdict or Nobody's Fool, to name just a few pictures that come to mind, he's more than just iconic. In those movies and in many, many others, he created characters that are lasting and durable.

"His powerful eloquence, his consummate sense of craft, so consummate that you didn't see any sense of effort up there on the screen, set a new standard.

"But in addition to being a great actor, one of the greatest really, he was also such a fine, caring man. I will miss him greatly."

Movie couple Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon have also joined those paying tribute to Newman.

In a statement, Robbins says, "The world has lost an angel.... He was always a hero of mine both as an actor and as a man, and it was an honour to have known his wonderful spirit, to act with him, to laugh with him, and to sit in the passenger seat while he drove 100 mph with mischief in his eyes."

And Sarandon adds, "Paul Newman was a class act; smart, sexy, generous and kind. He was committed equally to justice and pranks. He was something you don't hear mentioned often these days; a good man. He taught me to appreciate the home grown tomato, championship badminton and chamber music. He will be missed."...
