Two Winnipeg filmmakers gathered in Toronto last week to discuss their latest works and their relationship to their hometown and its anti-mainstream film scene. Matthew Rankin, whose “Universal Language” now represents Canada in the Best International Feature Film Oscar race, was joined by Canadian auteur Guy Maddin at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival for a dialogue about their filmmaking.
Guy Maddin co-directed the 2024 film “Rumours” with Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson, and the political satire has played festivals far and wide, from Cannes to TIFF. Rankin won the Directors’ Fortnight Audience Award at Cannes for his absurdist triptych comedy that riffs on Wes Anderson while homaging Abbas Kiarostami. Rankin’s Oscilloscope release (out early next year) connects three seemingly unrelated stories about people in Winnipeg whose ordinary lives take a surreal turn.

Updated: While the calendar has clicked over to September, summer vibes are still being felt at the global and international box office. In yet another ascent, and on its 12th weekend of release, Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has now grossed $1.666B+ globally, overtaking 2019’s The Lion King to become the 9th biggest movie ever at the worldwide box office. The cume through Sunday is an estimated $1,666.2M.
Summer has indeed been good to Disney and its brands, and vice-versa. Between Pixar’s Inside Out 2 and Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine, Dis boasts the two biggest movies of the year and the only billion-dollar grossers so far. Meanwhile, 20th Century’s Alien: Romulus is chomping its way to $300M global.
Sony/Wayfarer’s It Ends with Us is headed towards the same milestone, and Illumination/Universal’s Despicable Me 4 has gruved past the $900M global mark.

Box Office: ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Crosses $600M to Rule Labor Day, ‘Reagan’ in Close Race for No. 3
Labor Day weekend is never a big holiday for moviegoing, as most people mark the end of summer with other activities, and this year is no exception. Deadpool & Wolverine is the biggest headline of the four-day weekend as it stays No. 1 in its sixth outing and crosses $600 million domestically, becoming only the 16th film in history to do so, not adjusted for inflation.
The only newcomer landing in the upper reaches of the chart is the indie biopic Reagan, starring Dennis Quaid and based on Paul Kengor’s book The Crusader: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of Communism. After a better-than-expected Sunday, the film has found itself in a three-way contest with Twisters and It End With Us for either third or four place. The order won’t be determined until final grosses for the four-day holiday weekend are issued Monday.

Founded in 1946, Switzerland’s Locarno Film Festival is one of the world’s longest-running film festivals, known for its adventurous programming, exciting retrospectives, and nightly open-air screenings in the Piazza Grande, capable of seating 8,000 spectators. The latter is by no means the only screening spot, but it’s the location most associated with the festival.
Hosting world premieres and special screenings of highlights from Cannes, SXSW, and other early-year festivals, this year’s Piazza Grande selection includes the launch of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette portrait “The Flood,” starring Guillaume Canet and Mélanie Laurent; Bérénice Béjo-led thriller “Mexico 86”; Mohammad Rasoulof’s Cannes prizewinner “The Seed of the Sacred Fig”; actor Paz Vega’s directorial debut “Rita”; and the world premiere of Tarsem Singh’s restored recut of “The Fall.”

Where to begin in describing the emotions that Hollywood and theater owners — not to mention Pixar and its parent company Disney — are likely feeling over the stunning start of Inside Out 2 at the box office. (Hint: Sadness isn’t one of them.)
In a joyous comeback for Pixar, the tentpole opened to a massive $155 million domestically over Father’s Day weekend — well ahead of an expected $90 million — to secure the second-biggest animated launch of all time for a three-day weekend, not adjusted for inflation. It also did historic business overseas, where it opened to a record $140 million for a global total of $295 million, the biggest opening of all time for an animated film in like-for-like markets when accounting for exchange rates.
Fellow Pixar sequel Incredibles 2 is the crown-holder for top animated domestic opening ($182.7 million). That was previously followed by Illumination and Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie...

Julien’s Auctions, the Beverly Hills-based company that specializes in movie memorabilia, drew sharp criticism on Friday for listing a fragment for sale from the plane crash that killed actress Carole Lombard in 1942.
The item is offered as part of the “Danger, Disaster and Disco” lot, which runs from June 12-14 and is cosponsored by Turner Classic Movies. The starting bid is $250, with the piece of wreckage valued at between $1,000 and $2,000.
Film historian Olympia Kiriakou tweeted, “It’s quite despicable that @JuliensAuctions is selling a piece of mangled plane debris from the crash that killed Carole Lombard.”
Her tweet was shared by X user Frank Wells, who wrote, “I’m trying to figure what kind of ghoul would want this in their home, certainly not an actual Carole Lombard fan. And do what with it? Display? Trot it out at parties? ‘Hey, check this out….'”

Drew Barrymore is a child of Hollywood royalty and a Golden Globe winning actress whose career has spanned nearly her entire life, making her first credited screen performance at the age of three. But how many of her titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at 15 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Barrymore was born to a celebrated acting family though she never really knew her famous ancestors. Her grandfather was John Barrymore, star of “Grand Hotel”, “Twentieth Century” and “Dinner at Eight” among others. She is also the great grand niece of Oscar winners Lionel Barrymore and Ethel Barrymore. Lionel won one of the earliest Oscars as Best Actor for “A Free Soul” in 1931 but is probably best remembered as the villainous Mr. Potter of the Christmas classic “It’s a Wonderful Life.” His sister Ethel won the 1945 Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “None but the Lonely Heart...

Great news, “Predator” fans: a new pic in the franchise is on the way. And no, it’s not “Prey 2,” although that’s still very much in development. Deadline reports that 20th Century has greenlit “Badlands,” a new standalone tale in the franchise, with “Prey” director Dan Trachtenberg returning to direct. And Patrick Aison, who wrote “Prey,” also returns for the new sequel, with he and Trachtenberg working on the story of “Badlands” together.

Following the massive success of the Predator pic, Prey, 20th Century is moving forward with the next film as Deadline is hearing Dan Trachtenberg is returning to write and direct Badlands, a new standalone pic in the franchise that is expected to shoot later this year. The film is a high priority for the studio and sources say Trachtenberg and execs are already meeting with talent for the lead role. Trachtenberg co-wrote script with Patrick Aison.
20th Century had no comment.

Back in October, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions announced that The Black Phone 2 will be receiving a theatrical release on June 27, 2025, marking the “launch of a sinister new franchise.” Soon after, it was revealed that the sequel will see the return of Mason Thames (How to Train Your Dragon) as Finney Shaw, Madeleine McGraw (Secrets of Sulphur Springs) as Finney’s sister Gwen, Jeremy Davies (Justified) as their dad Terrence, and Miguel Mora, whose only previous credit is The Black Phone, as Robin, a friend of Finney’s who was killed in the first movie. Plus, yes, Ethan Hawke (Moon Knight) will be reprising the role of the child-killer known as The Grabber. The Black Phone director Scott Derrickson had said he would only return for a sequel if Hawke did as well… and after Hawke was confirmed to be returning, we learned that Derrickson will indeed be directing The Black Phone 2.

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including the 2021 winner “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Costume Design predictions.)

Since she first appeared in "E.T." when she was just 7 years old, Drew Barrymore has been a beloved fixture in the entertainment industry. Films like "Never Been Kissed" and "Charlie's Angels" solidified her star power, and she's started a new chapter as the host of "The Drew Barrymore Show," which kicked off in September 2020.
Over the years, Drew's candid, vulnerable conversation style has helped her interviews stand out on her talk show. She's been able to connect with people like Brooke Shields about the sexualization they both faced as child stars, and in particular, Drew's openness about the struggles she faced with her parents during her youth has allowed her to bond with stars with similar backgrounds, like Jennette McCurdy.

Howard Hawks was the Oscar-nominated director who has become a favorite among cinephiles, praised as a master of genre entertainments. But how many of his titles have remained classics? Let’s take a look back at 20 of Hawks’ greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1896, Hawks had a background in engineering and aviation before turning to filmmaking during the silent era. He proved himself to be a versatile talent, adapting his direct, fast-paced style to a variety of genres, including comedies, westerns, film noir, adventures (“Only Angels Have Wings”), gangster epics (“Scarface”) and war dramas.
Although Hawks often explored the codes of masculinity in films starring Humphrey Bogart, John Wayne and Cary Grant, he was noted for his strong-willed, fast talking female characters, coined the “Hawksian woman.” The battle of the sexes was never more evenhanded than it was in one of his films, thanks to the likes of Katharine Hepburn,...

When Twa Flight 3, a twin-engine DC-3 concluding its cross-country route from Indiana to Burbank, California, slammed into Potosi Mountain just outside of Las Vegas in the early evening of January 16, 1942, the movies lost its greatest screwball comedienne.

Another high profile sequel has turned in a solid opening weekend at the box office as Paramount/Spyglass’ “Scream VI” has scored a $44.5 million domestic launch this weekend from 3,675 theaters.
The last “Scream” film, which opened to $30 million, kicked off a 2022 that was Paramount’s best box office year since 2011. While that great year ended on a rough note with Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon” flopping, “Scream VI” now has Paramount back on a roll as it hopes to continue that in a few weeks with “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” which gets a premiere at SXSW this week ahead of a release on March 30.

“Anne Heche has been peacefully taken off life support,” a rep for the actor said Sunday evening.

US actress Anne Heche is dead but will remain on life support to allow for a possible organ donation, her representative has said. The 53-year-old had been in a coma for a week after crashing her car into a house in Los Angeles, reports the BBC.
“Today we lost a bright light, a kind and most joyful soul,” her family said in a statement on Friday.
Heche appeared in films including ‘Volcano’, ‘Donnie Brasco’ and the 1998 remake of ‘Psycho’.
The mother-of-two also appeared on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ in 2020.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department (Lafd), Heche’s vehicle “erupted in heavy fire”, which took 59 firefighters more than an hour to fully extinguish. The two-storey home she crashed into was left “uninhabitable”.
As well as suffering burns, the actress was left with “a severe anoxic brain injury”, when the brain is deprived of oxygen, the BBC quoted her family as saying.

Anne Heche, star of “Six Days, Seven Nights” and an early LGBT role model for openly dating TV host Ellen DeGeneres in the 1990s, has died from injuries she sustained in a horrific car crash a week before. She was 53.
Her death was first noted Friday by friend Nancy Davis, who posted a tribute on Instagram. TMZ later reported that she was brain-dead, which is legally considered dead in California. A rep for Heche confirmed to TheWrap that she had no brain function Friday, but had no update as to whether she was still on life support.
Before she was formally declared dead, her representatives said in a statement released Thursday that the actress was unlikely to survive due to severe brain injuries. Anne Heche is reportedly in a coma and in critical condition Monday following a car accident in which her car crashed into a Los Angeles residence on Friday, setting fire to both the home and vehicle.
“She has a significant pulmonary injury requiring mechanical ventilation and burns that require surgical intervention,” a rep for the actress said in a statement sent to media outlets Monday. Heche slipped into a coma shortly after the accident, the rep told CNN.
Heche’s reps previously shared on Saturday that the actress was in “stable condition” after her hospitalization and that Heche’s family was asking for “thoughts and prayers and to respect her privacy during this difficult time.”
The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed in a public report that the car collided into a two-story home in the Mar Vista neighborhood of L.A., causing a fire.

Sending well wishes. After a 2021 in which very few American blockbusters made it to Chinese movie theaters, Warner Bros.’ next DC blockbuster “The Batman” has been approved by the Chinese film board for a release on March 18.
The approval is a big boost to Warner’s box office hopes, as it will be the first comic book movie since “Wonder Woman 1984” to get a release in China and the first major American import after the Lunar New Year period, which is reserved for Chinese films only. Warner Bros. has released a new poster with the release date, which can be seen below

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) has announced nominations in the Motion Pictures and Television categories for the 33rd Annual Producers Guild Awards, which will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2022 at the Fairmont Century Plaza.
The PGA is a sturdy bellwether for the likely nominees for the Best Picture Oscar, which will be a guaranteed ten this year. This opens up the field to more adventurous choices. While ABC is rooting for a global blockbuster like “Spider-Man: No Way Home” to gain a Best Picture slot, it is not listed by the more mainstream PGA. Since its inception, the PGA has predicted 22 of the past 32 winners of the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Additionally, the PGA has extended the the voting window for select categories. Final ballots for TV and Film will now close on March 8; Final Ballots for Children’s, Short Form and Sports Programs will remain on their...

Earlier this month, Virginia-based movie theater owner Mark O’Meara witnessed something he hadn’t seen in nearly two years. A packed house.
Audiences filled the 190-seat auditorium at University Mall in Fairfax to watch “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” the epic finale in Tom Holland’s web-slinging superhero trilogy. In the days since, the Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios film has become the kind of global box office juggernaut that once seemed impossible in the wake of Covid-19. “No Way Home” has already earned $1 billion globally after less than two weeks in theaters and it is continuing to put up monster grosses through the holidays.
“I went in front of the crowd and waved my hands. I think we filled up because other theaters were sold out,” O’Meara says. “We’re not as well known, and there were a significant number of people who had said they had never been to our theater before.

Updated, writethru: We’re in a sort of holding pattern at the international box office, as big year-end titles are still in the wings. This weekend was all about holdover business — and some further market launches on major pics already in release elsewhere. Last frame’s debut, Disney’s Encanto, leads the session again for the studios with a solid 30% drop, adding $20.7M from 49 material markets for an overseas cume of $58.1M and a global total of $116.1M.
Positive word of mouth is helping to drive the animated musical, with France, Italy, Colombia, Brazil and Mexico among the continued No. 1s this session. Asia Pacific has underwhelmed, however. The top performers to date are France ($6.5M), Colombia ($5.9M), UK ($4.2M) and Russia ($3.5M) which is tied with Italy and Korea.
MGM/Universal’s House Of Gucci, meanwhile, is fashioning some impressive numbers. The Lady Gaga-starrer added $14.8M in 60 combined...

No Time To Die may not have broken records last weekend, but the overall weekend box office did: It was the first time since the pandemic began that we had two weekends in a row with a total gross exceeding $100 million, which until this month only two weekends had accomplished. This weekend we might see that happen for a third week in a row with the releases of Universal’s Halloween Kills, the latest entry in the long running slasher franchise, and 20th Century’s The Last Duel, the latest historical epic from Ridley Scott. While we saw some big grosses from individual films over the summer, we’re finally starting to see a steady slate of films that audiences are showing up for and solid numbers from the market as a whole.
Halloween Kills, which is opening on 3,600 screens, is the likely number one for the weekend. The 12th...

Some pundits worry that the Oscar ceremony won’t feel like the real thing, because the late date (April 25) is disorienting and because the show will be divided between two venues, L.A.’s Union Station and the traditional Dolby Theatre. In truth, a fluid date and multiple locations go back to Oscar’s earliest days.
The first televised ceremony in 1953 had cameras in both Hollywood and New York, a tactic that continued through 1957. Even before that, Oscar included live segments. So this is a return to the original format.
Early ceremonies were broadcast on radio; in 1940, the show stopped for its first live remote, which was Franklin D. Roosevelt’s six-minute address to showbiz.
In 1951, ABC Radio aired the Oscars. Lead actor contender José Ferrer was starring in the comedy “20th Century” on Broadway with fellow nominee Gloria Swanson, so he scheduled a modest Oscar-night birthday party for her...

Two Normal Rockwell paintings owned by legendary television producer Robert Boyett are going up for auction in December.
The two paintings are part of Boyett’s collection with Thomas Miller, his late partner in business and in life who passed away in April. Boyett and Miller were instrumental in the creation of “Happy Days,” “Mork & Mindy,” “Laverne & Shirley,” “Bosom Buddies,” “Family Matters” and “Full House.” On the film side, they produced “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” following by Broadway’s “War Horse” and the musical adaptation of “Tootsie.”
Rockwell’s “An Audience of One,” created as an illustration for the December 1938 issue of Ladies’ Home Journal, is estimated to be worth $2.5-3.5 million, according to Phillips, the auction house handling the sale of both works.
“The Peephole,” originally commissioned for a 1958 issue of “The Saturday Evening Post,” is estimated at $1-1.5 million.

Paramount Pictures Motion Picture Group President Emma Watts is reviving the studio’s production shingle Paramount Players and has hired Jeremy Kramer, former production EVP at 20th Century Studios, as its president.
In addition, the studio has promoted Ashley Brucks, who has overseen “A Quiet Place” and other Paramount hits, as Senior EVP of Paramount Players.
“Jeremy has a proven track record of nurturing talent, both established and new, supporting their vision and helping them execute at the highest level — from ‘Let’s Be Cops’ to ‘Kingsman’ to ‘Deadpool’,” says Watts, who previously worked with Kramer at 20th Century Fox. “There’s isn’t a movie that he’s worked on that he hasn’t made better. Disney added “The New Mutants” back to its release calendar, setting the “X-Men” superhero adventure to debut in theaters on Aug. 28.
The studio also moved “Ron’s Gone Wrong,” an animated film from 20th Century, back a few months from Feb. 26, 2021, to April 23, 2021. An untitled 20th Century title previously set for that date has been removed from Disney’s schedule.
For now, it’s uncertain if movie theaters will be fully operational in areas like Manhattan and Los Angeles by the time “The New Mutants” is expected to grace multiplexes. Cinemas in areas like Texas and Georgia, which have been less impacted by the coronavirus outbreak, have slowly started to reopen. But if major moviegoing markets aren’t up and running, studios might continue to move around release dates.

A staple of any Marvel movie, including those outside of the McU, was always the Stan Lee cameo. I mean, who could blame the man largely responsible for creating the modern-day Gods for wanting to be a part of the films in some way?
Of course, Lee passed away in 2018, but he still managed to make more than 60 cameos in various movies and TV shows over the years. Perhaps the most memorable of them all though was his appearance in Deadpool. In the film, he plays a DJ in a strip club introducing “Chastity to the stage.” But according to Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld, Lee didn’t do the scene on set. Instead, he was by himself in front of a green screen and was placed in the strip club afterwards.
“And here we go to the biggest cameo of all time,” Liefeld said during a commentary track he did with ComicBook.com’s Brandon Davis.

The McU will still see Scarlett Johansson play the beloved character at some point this year, but the May 1st release is not happening. Disney also made a number of other changes, as the studio pulled The Personal History of David Copperfield (a Searchlight release starring Dev Patel and directed by Armando Iannucci), as well as The Woman in the Window...

Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog managed to hold off 20th Century's The Call of the Wild for a second weekend at #1, topping $106 million after just ten days in release and already ranking as the fourth largest video game adaptation domestically of all-time. Stx's release Brahms: The Boy II currently holds a narrow lead for a fourth place finish while truTV's release of Impractical Jokers: The Movie managed to land just outside the top ten despite playing in just 357 locations.
Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog dipped a little more than we anticipated, but still managed to hold on to the #1 spot at the weekend box office over its sophomore frame. The film fell -55% compared to its strong debut last weekend and delivered an estimated $26.3 million over the three-day, pushing the film's domestic cume over $106 million after just ten days in release. Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog looks to keep things rolling this weekend as it faces incoming competition from 20th Century's The Call of the Wild and Stx's Brahms: The Boy II. Sonic will have no trouble holding on to the top spot following its strong start last weekend as it looks to top $110 million after just ten days in release.
Following a massive start last weekend, accompanied by solid critical reviews and audience response, Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog is looking at a another weekend atop the box office. We're anticipating a dip around -48% or so for a $30 millilon three-day. Should that forecast hold look for the film to top $110 million by the end of the weekend, on its way to becoming the third highest grossing video game adaptation domestically after just ten days in release.

There are two sides to every story, a concept that filmmaker Noah Baumbach and streaming giant Netflix seem intent on baking into the very fabric of their upcoming drama, “Marriage Story.” And that includes marketing materials, as Netflix has now rolled out not one, but two trailers for the upcoming drama, all the better to show off two perspectives on one tale.
Billed by the streaming giant as an “incisive and compassionate portrait of a marriage breaking up and a family staying together,” the film stars Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver as a once-happy couple going through a heartbreaking divorce. The film also stars Laura Dern, Alan Alda, Ray Liotta, Julie Hagerty, Merritt Wever and Azhy Robertson, with Wallace Shawn, Martha Kelly, and Mark O’Brien.
Despite the inherent drama of the premise, these first trailers still smack of Baumbach’s trademark dark humor, and while “Marriage Story” will offer plenty of tears,...

There’s a moment in Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” when all the unspoken tension breaks loose. Playwright Charlie (Adam Driver) and actress Nicole (Scarlett Johansson) have been enmeshed in nasty divorce proceedings involving the custody of their young child, and their attempt to talk it through results in harrowing bursts of anger on both sides. Watching the A-list actors throw themselves into the moment, Baumbach was caught off-guard.
“I was very moved by it,” the filmmaker said, in his first interview about the movie this week. “It’s extremely personal for me, but it really became this thing where I felt like everybody was bringing themselves to it.”
Baumbach last explored the trauma of divorce nearly 15 years ago, with his Oscar-nominated “The Squid and the Whale,” which drew on his adolescent memories of watching his parents split up. With “Marriage Story,” Baumbach’s 2010 divorce from Jennifer Jason Leigh after...
