Author Bryan Senn, in his book "A Year in Fear", identifies this as the first film adapted from the work of an African American playwright, and as the first "blaxploitation horror movie" in film history.
Adapted by Augustus Smith from his own play "Louisiana", which had bombed when it debuted on Broadway in 1933.
Cast members Laura Bowman, Morris McKenny, Edna Barr, A.B. DeComathiere and others reprise their roles from the stage production of "Louisiana" that preceded this film adaptation.
Production was completed in late March, 1933.
Laura Bowman made a number of personal appearances at screenings of the film in Washington, DC, in February 1934.
