Parental guilt springs from an inexhaustible source. Even if your kids go to sleep every night safe, clean and fed, there’s still plenty to beat yourself up about. Are they creative enough? Excelling enough? Getting enough Vitamin D to stop their bones from crumbling like Oxo Cubes and their adult teeth from coming in like a splayed hand of playing cards?
Are you, in short, doing everything you can to give them The Best Possible Childhood?
In online parenting circles, The Best Possible Childhood has recently had a rebrand. Bloggers have looked with concern at the device-blue light illuminating the faces of kids who hiss like a pointy-toothed Bilbo Baggins hissing for the One True Ring whenever an attempt is made to separate them from their phone. They’ve decided that what today’s kids need is what they had: the 1990s.

Directed by Mark Sheppard
Written by Cameron Larson, (loosely) based on the book by Jules Verne
Featuring Gina Holden, Lochlyn Munro, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Susie Abromeit, Mark Sheppard, J. D. Evermore, Edrick Browne, Caleb Michaelson and William Morgan Sheppard
One might suspect the Syfy premiere of Jules Verne’s The Mysterious Island last February was another “mockbuster” from The Asylum, timed to coincide with the theatrical release of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. But blame this one on the Syfy channel, as The Asylum wasn’t involved with this 2010 production. And that’s unfortunate, as this movie lacks any sense of fun or campy humor.
Most genre fans know how the film starts out. During The Civil War, as a group of Union prisoners, along with a reporter and a Confederate deserter, escape from their captors in a hot air balloon. A Confederate soldier, attempting to stop them, is pulled...

Dwayne Johnson is going to see what else is out there besides giant electrical eels and super-advanced submarines.
The "Fast Five" star is in talks to continue replacing Brendan Fraser in the third installment of the incredibly successful "Journey" series of sci-fi adventure films, according to The Wrap.
Johnson appeared as Hank Parsons, a stepfather who's looking to connect with his brooding stepson, Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson), in "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island." Their bonding commences when Sean intercepts a distress signal from his grandfather (Michael Caine), who's been stranded on the very island that inspired Robert Louis Stevenson to write "Treasure Island," Jonathan Swift to write "Gulliver's Travels" and, of course, Jules Verne to write "The Mysterious Island."
No word on what the plot of the third "Journey" will involve, but "Journey 2" ended with the family mulling over a copy of Verne's "From the Earth to the Moon," so...

With four movies opening to over $20 million for only the second time in history, it was a very good weekend to be in the movie business. The Vow wound up in first with an excellent $41.2 million, though Safe House wasn't far behind in second. Journey 2: The Mysterious Island also drastically outperformed expectations, and Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace in 3D reaffirmed the enduring popularity of the Star Wars franchise. Overall box office was at over $191 million, which is behind Valentine's Day Weekend 2010 ($204.7 million) but up from with Valentine's Day 2009 ($188.9 million). The Vow's $41.2 million topped Dear John's $30.5 million for best opening ever from a Sony/Screen Gems release. It was also the sixth-highest debut ever in February, and third-highest for a romance or romantic comedy behind Valentine's Day ($56.3 million) and Hitch ($43.1 million). The audience was 72 percent women and 55 percent under the age of 25, and there is currently no CinemaScore available.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island
Starring Josh Hutcherson, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Michael Caine
Directed by Brad Peyton
Rated PG
As a movie reviewer, when I sit down and write my thoughts on a particular film, I sometimes need to alter my process. I really can't rate something like Journey 2: The Mysterious Island on the same scale as last year's Drive, or 50/50, or anything with a deep or complicated plot and characters. But as a family film, it does its job really well, and makes it so both kids and adults will be entertained, without alienating either with humor or or questionable situations.
A few years after Journey to the Center of the Earth, we find Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) at odds with his mother for moving them away from his friends, and marrying Hank (Dwayne Johnson). However, after receiving an encoded transmission from his grandfather Alexander (Michael Caine...

Chicago – If you hear an unusual sound this weekend, it may be Jules Verne, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Jonathan Swift spinning in their graves. The writers who have become an essential part of any growing person’s library have now been associated with a piece of 3D junk that insults the intelligence of everyone who sees it. “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” is not a trip worth taking.

I know what some of you are already thinking. I’m being too hard on it. It’s a kid’s movie. It’s 3D fun and if it introduces some great authors to another generation than this cynical critic is being predictably belligerent. I wish I could agree. I would love to support a “dumbed down” version of classic fiction that might get young viewers doing something that seems increasingly uncommon – cracking a book. But does it have to be this far down?...

It seems there’s a pervading opinion that children’s entertainment doesn’t have to be good. Any criticism of a work of art intended for the younger members of our society is almost immediately met with cries of “oh come on, it’s just for kids.” It’s a strange form of hypocrisy given that most parents almost always want the best for their kids, except, apparently, when it comes to films. Films seem to get a pass no matter how shitty they may be. But if your kid’s sick and needs a doctor, you want the best possible doctor to treat them. It’s an unfathomable double standard. There should be no shame in demanding better films for youngsters, and, unfortunately, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is not one of those better films. The film centers on Journey to the Center of the Earth lead Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson), who receives a coded message...

Had its filmmakers not hedged all over their creative bets, "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" might have at least been an admirable folly. Its creators many attempts to pander to the lowest common denominator and attract as many potential viewers as possible has made 'Journey 2' look like it was assembled by a creatively challenged brain trust. Based loosely on Jules Verne’s "The Mysterious Island," 'Journey 2' is thankfully not as spectacularly awful as director Brad Peyton’s last kiddy-oriented sequel, "Cats and Dogs: Revenge Kitty Galore." But screenwriters Brian and Mark Gunn don’t really add anything of note to the film’s mostly bland proceedings. If you changed its island setting and accordingly swapped out a few key plot details, the character of 'Journey 2' would not change at all. The rest of the movie’s 94-minute runtime is consequently totally anemic and uninspired, which is saying.

From South Pacific to Archipelago, cinema and fiction has long explored island paradises and hell-holes. But why are film-makers enchanted by islands time and time again?
Jules Verne's works have much to offer the makers of CGI-prone, 3D-disposed kids' adventure flicks. The 2008 version of Journey to the Centre of the Earth did well enough at the box office, so a sequel was obligatory. We could have had Captain Nemo's submarine odyssey, the exploration of Africa from a balloon or a voyage to the moon by cannon-fired projectile. Instead, we get a trip to an island.
Even in Verne's day, this was considered a bit of a let-down. The author's publisher rejected the first version of what was to become The Mysterious Island with the reproach: "Where is the science?" To beef things up a bit, Verne got his adventurers blown off course while escaping from a war zone by balloon.

This cheerfully silly adventure about a secret island is fun enough to forgive its ludicrous central idea
Here's a cheerful and silly family adventure followup to Journey to the Center of the Earth, featuring loads and loads of giant-sized animals. The nearest it comes to being clever is making the "2" in the title work as a goofy pun. Teen explorer Sean (Josh Hutcherson) and his muscly stepdad Hank (Dwayne Johnson) make the remarkable discovery that the imaginary maps in the family-owned editions of Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels (1726), Jules Verne's The Mysterious Island (1875) and Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island (1883) all fit together to reveal the shape and actual coordinates of one real secret island – the island in Verne's book! (Huh? What? But surely … oh, never mind.) So they journey to this fabulous place to find Sean's castaway granddad, played by Michael Caine. Thoroughly daft and entertaining.

Aside from the Winchester brothers themselves, our favorite character on "Supernatural" is probably Crowley, as portrayed by Mark Sheppard. Now he's stepping behind the camera for Syfy's Jules Verne’s Mysterious Island, and we have all the details you need right here along with the trailer and a few never-before-seen photos.
From the Press Release:

★★☆☆☆ Directed by Brad Peyton and starring Dwayne Johnson (Aka The Rock), Vanessa Hudgens and Michael Caine, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012) is a high octane, stereoscopic 3D adaptation of Jules Verne's The Mysterious Island - which despite giving little consideration towards its literary source, is undeniably an exhilarating family friendly, action adventure that’ll no doubt thrill younger audiences.

You know for a movie with Dwayne Johnson, formally known as The Rock, starring in a family-friendly film, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, actually looks pretty good. That being said, I don’t have any kids that I could take to watch this. New Line Cinema and Walden Media has just released the new trailer for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, which features the likes of Johnson, Josh Hutcherson, Michael Caine, Luis Guizman, and Vanessa Hudgens.

A new international trailer has been released for the upcoming 3D adventure film Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. The sequel is loosely based on the classic Jules Verne novel The Mysterious Island. The first movie looked so bad I didn't bother seeing it, so of course I have no reason or desire to see this sequel either. The special effects look exceptionally bad.
The movie stars Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson who is the character taking the place of Brendan Fraser who must have found something better to do. Josh Hutcherson reprises his role d the lead character Sean, Michael Caine plays Sean’s lost adventurist explorer grandfather. The movie also stars Vanessa Hudgens as Sean's love interest, and Luis Guzman plays a helicopter pilot that adds a comedic element to the story.

The first trailer for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island was all about fun family adventure. The film is the sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D, the film that was ahead of the recent wave of 3D releases, and as such got away with some pretty shoddy effects. This sequel is loosely based on Jules Verne's novel The Mysterious Island, and the original trailer highlighted a little bit of danger and a lot of wide-eyed adventure all brought to life with effects that are still pretty shoddy-looking. At least there are a few likable people in the cast: Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson tags in to replace Brendan Fraser; Josh Hutcherson is the lead kid Sean, and Michael Caine plays Sean’s long-lost explorer grandfather. Luis Guzman is the comic relief, and Vanessa Hudgens is a love interest for Sean. This international trailer gets a lot more serious,...

Ostensibly a sequel to Journey To The Center Of The Earth, which proved a surprise hit back in 2008, it appears to have few ties to that film. Brendan Fraser’s bailed from the franchise, and Journey 2’s subtitle implies that it’s loosely based on another Jules Verne novel, The Mysterious Island, which was actually written as a follow-up to Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea and In Search Of The Castaways, and therefore has nothing to do with Journey To The Center Of The Earth at all.

Last night Yahoo debuted the trailer for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, the second Brendan Fraser franchise Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has honed in on, this time a sequel to Fraser's 2008 3D adventure, Journey to the Center of the Earth. The film, which is loosely based on Jules Verne's "The Mysterious Island," finds The Rock playing stepfather to Sean (the returning Josh Hutcherson) and the two have to team up when Sean receives a coded distress signal from his grandfather on a mysterious island where no island should exist. Together with a helicopter pilot and his daughter (Vanessa Hudgens), they set out to find the island, rescue grandpa and escape before seismic shockwaves force the island under the sea and bury its treasures forever. The world has a lot of strange and interesting islands. New Zealand, for instance, is a pretty mysterious island. Japan is also fairly mysterious. And don't even get us started about Staten Island.
But when you have an island that features mountains of gold, bees the size of Volkswagens and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's steel-hard pecs -- not to mention "The Hunger Games" star Josh Hutcherson -- then you have to agree that "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" may just top them all.
"Journey 2," of course, implies that there was a "Journey 1," and in this case it's referring not to the legendary rock band (sorry, Randy Jackson) but instead to the family-friendly 2008 3-D adventure "Journey to the Center of the Earth." This time around, they aren't going anywhere near the center of the Earth, with the destination instead being a completely different Jules Verne story, "The Mysterious Island."

Time travel, ruthless pirates, erupting volcanoes, monstrously hairy swamp cannibals, a giant octopus, and Captain Nemo armed with a steampunk raygun await the characters that have crashed landed on Jules Verne's Mysterious Island in the newest adaptation of the 1874 literary classic. The only thing missing is Doug McClure.
The other week I reported on a Syfy-bound creature feature titled Xtinction: Predator. One of that film's producers, George M. Kostuch, was nice enough to send over word of his newest production: the latest feature film adaptation of Jules Verne's classic Mysterious Island.
Filmed on location in Louisiana, K2 Pictures and Leverage Entertainment present a cinematic adaptation of Jules Verne's 1874 novel "The Mysterious Island", the story begins during the American Civil War, as famine and death ravage the city of Richmond, Virginia. Yet another movie set joins the long list of recent productions to have their security breached by determined "spy" photographers. The latest is the Hawaiian set of Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, the sequel to the 2008 family-friendly hit movie Journey to the Center of the Earth. Very loosely based on Jules Verne's The Mysterious Island, the script for Journey 2 had to be reworked to feature Josh Hutcherson's character, Sean Anderson, after Journey star Brendan Fraser declined to reprise the role of Prof. Trevor Anderson. The large set of new pics include a few shots of Hutcherson, but they primarily focus on newcomer Vanessa Hudgens, who can be seen running in distress, lounging in the sand, and *gasp* using a port-o-potty. Dwayne Johnson, Luis Guzman, Kristen Davis and two-time Academy Award-winner Sir Michael Caine also star.

Some might say I.m a big hypocrite when it comes to chastising actors for taking so-called paycheck roles, but I firmly believe there's a difference between an A-list actor choosing horrid projects and a supporting actor ending up in horrid projects. When Jim Carrey makes a bad movie, I point the finger at him; when Luis Guzman makes a bad movie, I say, well, a man.s gotta support his family. Knowing this, I will now defend Luis Guzman by saying the man has to support his family. According to THR, Guzman has just agreed to join Dwayne .The Rock. Johnson, Josh Hutcherson, Michael Caine and Vanessa Hudgens in the upcoming sequel to Journey To The Center Of The Earth entitled Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. The principal photography of "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" has been kicked off in late October and now new pictures from the set have been found. Lead stars Vanessa Hudgens, Josh Hutcherson, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Luiz Guzman were seen involved during the filming on Tuesday, November 9.
Taking place at a sandy beach in Hawaii, the production had Hudgens taping her running scene. The 21-year-old beauty seemingly enjoyed the warm weather as she was spotted lying under the sun in between takes. Hutcherson and Johnson, meanwhile, shared a frame for a scene set near some rocks.

Her trip to Abu Dhabi didn't go so well, but Sex and the City's Kristin Davis is on her travels again, joining Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. The sequel to Journey to the Centre of the Earth will cast Davis as mother to Josh Hutcherson's Sean Anderson; the only returning character from before. Dwayne Johnson, as already reported, replaces Brendan Fraser in the hunky-lead-guy role of Davis' boyfriend (back to the family fare after Fast Five and Faster); and Michael Caine is Hutcherson's Action-Grandad, the missing scientist who's the reason for the journey in the first place. We're promised he'll have a bit of a Swarm flashback and fight some killer bees. Sweet. The Mysterious Island is, like its predecessor, at least loosely based on a novel by Jules Verne (although the book is actually a sequel to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea). It's been filmed a few times before,...

Vanessa Hudgens is currently finalizing negotiations with New Line to play the female lead in Journey To The Center Of The Earth 2. Brad Peyton is directing the film which will also star Dwayne Johnson, Josh Hutcherson and Michael Caine.
The plot will loosely be based on Jules Verne's "The Mysterious Island" and will have Hutcherson and Hudgens searching for his grandfather played by Caine on a mystical island with the help of Johnson's character. Hudgen's will be Hutcherson's love interest in the film.
Production will begin in North Carolina and Hawaii in late October. The first movie had laughable special effects so I am hoping that those are drastically stepped up for this sequel. I also was not sure if it was Brendan Fraser's horrible acting or a poor script which added up to my distaste of the first film.

Brendan Fraser has decided to not return for the sequel to "Journey to the Center of the Earth," so New Line Cinema has gone out looking for his replacement. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has already joined the cast as the boyfriend of Josh Hutcherson's mom, and now comes word that Michael Caine (The Dark Knight) is in talks to board the project as well. "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" is loosely based on Jules Verne's "The Mysterious Island" and sees Hutcherson reprising his role from the first movie and partnering with Johnson on a trip to a mythical island to find his missing grandfather. Caine will play the grandfather. And the role won't be a simple cameo. Word is that the actor will take part in several chase sequences, including one involving giant bees. Brad Peyton (Cats and Dogs 2) is directing the movie, which is scheduled to begin filming in Hawaii in October.

Michael Caine is set to star in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, New Line’s follow-up to 2008’s Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D. He joins the returning Josh Hutcherson and the newly hired Dwayne Johnson (filling in for Brendan Fraser).
Hutcherson and Johnson will venture to a “mythical and monstrous island” in search of the teen’s grandfather, played by Caine. There they encounter perils, pirates, and possibly Captain Nemo, if the book by Jules Verne serves as a blueprint.
The Hollywood Reporter emphasizes Caine’s role is not a cameo, and the 77-year-old actor will be in “action mode, engaging in several chase sequences, including one involving giant bees.” Michael Douglas was considered for the role at one point, but was recently sidelined by an unfortunate throat cancer diagnosis.

It looks like Michael Caine is going to join Dwayne Johnson and Josh Hutcherson in the new 3D adventure film Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. This is the sequel to New Line's Journey to the Center of the Earth.
Michael Caine is a freakin' film legend! So why in the hell is he going to be in this movie!? Has it really come to this? Maybe he just wants to have a little fun? Apparently we will see him in crazy action mode in the movie, engaging in several chase sequences, including one involving giant bees.
Caine is playing Hutcherson's grandfather who is missing in the film. This leads Sean to team with his mother's boyfriend (Johnson) and track him down.
Caine is a bad-ass actor that still has the ability to kick some ass in the movie's he makes, have you seen Harry Brown yet!? That movie proves it.

The cast is coming together for Journey 2: The Sequel You Might Not Be Keen to See. (Ok, the actual subtitle to the Journey to the Center of the Earth sequel is The Mysterious Island.) Josh Hutcherson, returning from the first film, will be joined by Dwayne Johnson, and now Michael Caine will play the grandfather of Hutcherson's character. If you remember the story synopsis from when Johnson's involvement was announced, you'll recall that the script is loosely based on the Jules Verne novel The Mysterious Island and that Johnson and Hutcherson journey to a mystical island in search of the grandfather. So, as THR says, this isn't a cameo, and it'll even see Caine in full-on athletic mode. Or something close to it. He'll be in "several chase sequences," one of which involves giant bees. Dwayne Johnson, formerly the professional wrestler “The Rock,” is replacing Brendan Fraser in the sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D.
Josh Hutcherson will reprise his role from the original and Johnson will play his mother’s boyfriend. When it was first announced that Fraser would not be returning [3] for the sequel to the 3-D adventure film Journey to the Center of the Earth, a lot of people wondered how Josh Hutcherson could possibly carry the film on his own. Well, it looks like Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, is determined to never be the great action star we want him to be. I loved him in The Rundown and Be Cool, but other than that, he's been consistently disappointing, choosing simple-minded, child-friendly low-brown fare.
Now, he's set to replace Brendan Fraser in the sequel to the god awful Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D. This one will be called Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (get it? It's a play on words! Oh, Dwayne Johnson, you hurt me.
You had such potential. “The next Schwarzenegger, only he can act!”, people said. Sure, your first two movies (The Mummy Returns and The Scorpion King) were terrible, but those were part of the same mediocre franchise. The Rundown was okay, if just a little too aware of itself. And then, things only got worse. Walking Tall, Doom, and the culmination of it all, The Tooth Fairy. But with Faster, it seems like maybe you’re redeeming yourself, because it actually looks alright. But with the news that he’s been cast in Journey to the Center of the Earth 2, I feel like I’m ready to give up hope.
