"CATCH THE FAIR ONE" REVIEW

Directed and written by Josef Kubota Wladyka. A runtime of one hour and twenty-five minutes. Streaming on Hulu.

"Kaylee," played by Kali Reis, is Native American and Cape Verdean. She's a boxing champion coached by her friend "Brick," played by Shelly Vincent. Her dad isn't around, and she never truly got support from her mother, "Jaya," played by Kimberly Guerrero. But her younger sister, "Weeta," played by Mainaku Borrero, has always been supportive.

Getting ready for her upcoming fight, "Weeta" decided to walk home and not wait for "Kaylee" to finish. This is where everyone's life changed because, walking home, "Weeta" was kidnapped and sex trafficked.

This changed "Kaylee's" life and career. She stopped boxing and put all her effort into finding her sister. After getting a lead from a former private eye about where her sister might be, "Kaylee" trained her butt off in case she got into trouble and dived into this dark world of sex trafficking in hopes of finding her sister.

"Catch the Fair One" is a hilarious title for a film. That's what people from the East Coast say when they're about to fight. "Shoot me the fair one." "Catch a fade. That's Jersey lingo.

When it came to the film, I was a little confused at certain parts. Then I was in shock at "Kaylee" wanting to get sex trafficked to find her sister. When I heard that, I knew this film was about to get crazy. Because the beginning was kind of tame.

I was intrigued, and after certain scenes happened, I knew there was no point of return. So I truly wanted to see how the film played out. I just thought, man, this is getting bad for the main character.

By the time we got to the end, I was pissed. It was a decent film up until then. I was left feeling confused and deflated. It was like this film was a Macy's Day balloon. I could see the balloon growing as it got closer to the start of the parade. Just as the balloon started to soar high in the sky right at the beginning of the parade, it popped, and the parade was canceled. A lot happened for you to just be left with a popped balloon. How uninspiring.

Josef Kubota Wladyka had an interesting concept. He just made a couple of missteps along the way. It had promise for a spectacular film. Toward the end I still gave it a shot when I saw Lisa Emery; she played a character named "Debra." Seeing her, I immediately thought of her character in "Ozark," "Darlene." Unfortunately, it didn't pan out how I thought it would. I give this film three mor fires 🔥🔥🔥.
