When I watched this version of Taming of the Shrew, I got the definite impression that Kate was taming Petruchio, rather than the other way around. At the end of the movie, Kate gets to beat up Bianca one last time by dressing it up in "obedience" to her husband, who then meekly follows her out the door.
Now I have to look up the original to see if that reading is supported by the original text. :-)
Also, I can't help but wonder if the animators of Disney's Beauty and the Beast might have used parts of this for a visual reference. The opening looked awfully like "Belle"...
