Forgettable and Silly
8 October 2024
In the end of the Nineteenth Century, in Vienna, the handsome aspiring musician Schani Johann Strauss (Esmond Knight), who is the estranged son of the famous maestro Johann Strauss Sr. (Edmund Gwenn), and his girlfriend Resi Ebezeder (Jessie Matthews), who is daughter of Ebezeder (Robert Hale) that owns a traditional bakery and café, are in deep love for each other. When there is a fire in the bakery, Resi loses her skirt and runs to a nearby shop to get another one. Schani runs after her and meets Countess Helga von Stahl (Fay Compton), who is married to Prince Gustav (Frank Vosper). The countess becomes interested in the music of Schani and he becomes her protegee. However, the jealous Resi is suspicious of her true intentions. Schani composes the "Blue Danube" waltz with the support of Reise and the countess, but his father despises his music and humiliates him. But soon the countess and her publisher Anton Drexler (Marcus Barron) plots a scheme to help Schani without his acknowledgement to promote his waltz.

"Waltzes from Vienna" (1934) is a forgettable and silly movie by Alfred Hitchcock. The plot is supposed to be funny, but it is not. Further, it uses the name of Johann Strauss in a probably fictional situation. My vote is six.
