Actress Sanaa Lathan sat down in The Hollywood Reporter’s Studio at Sundance to promote her new feature Young. Wild. Free., alongside director Thembi Banks and co-stars Algee Smith and Sierra Capri. Lathan, most recently known for her Emmy-nominated guest starring role on season 3 of HBO’s Succession, also reflected on the upcoming season of the HBO series.

Lathan portrayed attorney Lisa Arthur on the Emmy-winning series’ most recent season, representing Jeremy Strong’s troubled media heir Kendall Roy. Asked whether she’s been on Succession’s set for season 4, Lathan revealed: “I have not, no, I have not.” However, in response to learning that co-star Nicholas Braun one-word summation of the upcoming season would be “Banger,” she said: “I mean, how can it bang more than my season? I’m kidding. Lisa Arthur was a legend. Who knows, maybe she’ll come back in the future.”

There’s a point when a movie starts dropping too many references to other movies that the enthusiasm gets a little suspicious. In director Thembi L. Banks’ debut feature “Young. Wild. Free.”— the title styled as such for no reason in particular — a mysterious woman with “Euphoria” eye-makeup named Cassidy (Sierra Capri) suddenly starts spouting them with abandon about 30 minutes in. “Did you know this is the diner from ‘Reservoir Dogs?,'” she says while digging into some pancakes at the diner from “Reservoir Dogs.” Over the course of the rest of the film’s running time, she proceeds to name drop “Dazed and Confused,” “Unforgiven,” and “Kill Bill.” Something is up.

And something is indeed up in the drama, which is . As the Letterboxd-friendly dialogue would imply: This is one you’ve seen before, and it’s sloppily executed.

By the time the reveal comes around you’ve been...

“Rebel Without a Cause,” “Bonnie and Clyde,” “The Wiz,” “Thelma & Louise,” “Reservoir Dogs,” “Unforgiven,” “Dazed and Confused,” “Fight Club,” “Kill Bill” — the movie references in “Young. Wild. Free.” pass by fast and furiously. Unfortunately, only viewers who haven’t seen all of the above are likely to appreciate the cinematic tropes on which this film’s plot rests — including a final twist that, depending on one’s perception, either enhances or undermines everything to come before it.

Where “Y.W.F” works best is as a showcase for the powerhouse performance of outstanding lead Algee Smith (“Euphoria”). Smith plays Brandon, a thoughtful high-school senior who’s forced to inhabit a range of roles each day: dutiful son, loving brother, aspiring artist, head of household. His mother is struggling with mental illness that leaves her in bed all day, and her boyfriend (an excellent Mike Epps) shows up only intermittently...

You know the story because you've seen it a thousand times: girl robs boy, girl finds boy thanks to the wallet she stole from him, girl dates boy. Actually, I don't think anybody's ever seen that before. Until now. Thembi L. Banks' remarkably assured and hugely insightful debut film "Young. Wild. Free." is a coming-of-age story wrapped in a boldly colorful romance that changes the game when it comes to the meet-cute.

The meet-cute has long been an essential device for establishing romances. The circumstances in which our two destined lovers meet can tell us a lot about what kind of story we're about to get. Netflix announced that Bryana Salaz, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Ciara Riley Wilson and Shiv Pai have joined the cast of “Freeridge,” the upcoming spinoff of “On My Block.”

The young adult comedy will reveal another side of the fictitious L.A. town Freeridge, following Salaz, Meija, Wilson and Pai’s characters as the new protagonists after they appeared in the series finale of “On My Block.” In “Freeridge,” the new core group end up on an adventure after realizing they may or may not have unleashed a deadly curse.

Salaz is best known for being a contestant on Season 7 of “The Voice” and later starring in “Team Kaylie,” while Mejia’s credits include Season 11 of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Growing Fangs.” Wilson has appeared in “L.A. ‘s Finest” and “Kim Possible” and Pai has appeared in “Iron Fist” and “Uncut Gems.”

Netflix has ordered a spinoff of the YA comedy series “On My Block.”

The new series, titled “Freeridge,” hails from “On My Block” co-creators Lauren Iungerich, Eddie Gonzalez, and Jeremy Haft along with “On My Block” co-producer Jamie Uyeshiro and “On My Block” co-executive producer Jamie Dooner. All are credited as co-creators and executive producers on the new series, with Uyeshiro, Gonzalez, and Haft also serving as co-showrunners.

The streamer on Monday dropped the trailer for On My Block Season 4, and it teases a lot of changes for the characters at the wheel of the series.

It begins in the past, with Cesar telling Monse that the only thing he will do in life is join a gang and turn to a life of crime.

Monse, of course, is trying to tell her love interest there's more out there for him.

Unfortunately, the characters are all apart when the final season debuts, with them all going their separate ways following a significant time jump.

A new two-hour documentary about Janet Jackson, simply titled “Janet,” will premiere in January 2022 on Lifetime and A&e in celebration of the star’s 40th anniversary of her debut album.

Jackson released a teaser for the documentary, in which fellow musicians such as Mariah Carey and Paula Abdul speak about their relationship with the singer. Jackson’s family members make appearances as well, with clips of the late Michael Jackson with his younger sister in home videos, as well as Tito Jackson saying, “She will always be my baby sister.”

Beneath the teaser is Jackson’s 1986 “Control,” which speaks to how she has taken charge of her own narrative and would like to speak in her own words about her life. “This is my story told by me, not through someone else’s eyes,” Jackson says.

“American Skin,” the film written, directed by and starring actor Nate Parker, will land on BET+ next week following its premiere at the Venice Film Festival in 2019 and an on-demand run through Vertical Entertainment. The film will debut on the streaming platform April 15.

“American Skin” stars Parker and Omari Hardwick and follows a Black Iraq War veteran, Lincoln Jefferson (Parker), who after being denied a fair trial following the shooting death of his teenage son by a white police officer, desperately seeks justice and accountability for his son’s death.

Parker is the director of “The Birth of a Nation,” which was released at the height of #OscarsSoWhite and won the top prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 2016 for its depiction of Nat Turner’s slave rebellion. The streamer on Friday announced a 10-episode fourth season order for the hit comedy, which was named one of the streamer's most-binged series a few years back.

10 episodes mean that it will have two more episodes than On My Block Season 4, but this is perhaps to help close the series out.

News of the renewal was expected, but given that the third season dropped on Netflix almost a year ago, and the way that Netflix has been canceling previously renewed shows, its fate was very much up in the air.
