Actress Sanaa Lathan sat down in The Hollywood Reporter’s Studio at Sundance to promote her new feature Young. Wild. Free., alongside director Thembi Banks and co-stars Algee Smith and Sierra Capri. Lathan, most recently known for her Emmy-nominated guest starring role on season 3 of HBO’s Succession, also reflected on the upcoming season of the HBO series.
Lathan portrayed attorney Lisa Arthur on the Emmy-winning series’ most recent season, representing Jeremy Strong’s troubled media heir Kendall Roy. Asked whether she’s been on Succession’s set for season 4, Lathan revealed: “I have not, no, I have not.” However, in response to learning that co-star Nicholas Braun one-word summation of the upcoming season would be “Banger,” she said: “I mean, how can it bang more than my season? I’m kidding. Lisa Arthur was a legend. Who knows, maybe she’ll come back in the future.”

There’s a point when a movie starts dropping too many references to other movies that the enthusiasm gets a little suspicious. In director Thembi L. Banks’ debut feature “Young. Wild. Free.”— the title styled as such for no reason in particular — a mysterious woman with “Euphoria” eye-makeup named Cassidy (Sierra Capri) suddenly starts spouting them with abandon about 30 minutes in. “Did you know this is the diner from ‘Reservoir Dogs?,'” she says while digging into some pancakes at the diner from “Reservoir Dogs.” Over the course of the rest of the film’s running time, she proceeds to name drop “Dazed and Confused,” “Unforgiven,” and “Kill Bill.” Something is up.
And something is indeed up in the drama, which is . As the Letterboxd-friendly dialogue would imply: This is one you’ve seen before, and it’s sloppily executed.

“Rebel Without a Cause,” “Bonnie and Clyde,” “The Wiz,” “Thelma & Louise,” “Reservoir Dogs,” “Unforgiven,” “Dazed and Confused,” “Fight Club,” “Kill Bill” — the movie references in “Young. Wild. Free.” pass by fast and furiously. Unfortunately, only viewers who haven’t seen all of the above are likely to appreciate the cinematic tropes on which this film’s plot rests — including a final twist that, depending on one’s perception, either enhances or undermines everything to come before it.

You know the story because you've seen it a thousand times: girl robs boy, girl finds boy thanks to the wallet she stole from him, girl dates boy. Actually, I don't think anybody's ever seen that before. Until now. Thembi L. Banks' remarkably assured and hugely insightful debut film "Young. Wild. Free." is a coming-of-age story wrapped in a boldly colorful romance that changes the game when it comes to the meet-cute.
The meet-cute has long been an essential device for establishing romances. The circumstances in which our two destined lovers meet can tell us a lot about what kind of story we're about to get. For high-school senior Brandon (a brilliant Algee Smith), he's about to get the surprise of his life. Before Covid upended the film festival scene, Sundance premieres were a hotbed of drama as studio chiefs and streaming executives staked out the best seats in the theater and then beat a path for the exits as soon as the credits rolled in the hopes of outmaneuvering each other for the hottest films. After two years of going virtual, Sundance is back in-person. However, it’s unclear if the all-night bidding wars that were such a staple of past festivals will also return in force. At a time of cost-cutting and box office struggles for indie movies, a new era of fiscal restraint may be the order of the day.
But Sundance’s thin mountain air could cause all that economizing to evaporate. And if it does, here are 13 films that could have buyers writing big checks.

On My Block is ending, but the franchise will remain alive at Netflix.
The streamer on Monday handed out a series order for Freeridge, which promises to present “another side” of the town of Freeridge.
In a surprising twist, the new series would be from the perspective of a new group of teeangers.

In what can best be called a chip off the ol’ On My Block, Netflix has greenlit a spinoff of the soon-to-end YA drama (which will release its fourth and final season on Monday, Oct 4).
On My Block initially followed just Monse, Ruby, Jamal and Cesar (played by Sierra Capri, Jason Genao, Brett Gray and Diego Tinoco), four bright and street-savvy friends as they navigated their way through the triumph, pain and the newness of high school in the rough inner city. One of Netflix's best series is about to launch its final batch of episodes.
Yes, we're talking about On My Block.
The streamer on Monday dropped the trailer for On My Block Season 4, and it teases a lot of changes for the characters at the wheel of the series.
It begins in the past, with Cesar telling Monse that the only thing he will do in life is join a gang and turn to a life of crime.
Monse, of course, is trying to tell her love interest there's more out there for him.
Unfortunately, the characters are all apart when the final season debuts, with them all going their separate ways following a significant time jump.
It's an exciting way to shake up the dynamics for the final batch of episodes, but the road back to friendship for this quartet is not going to be easy.

A new two-hour documentary about Janet Jackson, simply titled “Janet,” will premiere in January 2022 on Lifetime and A&e in celebration of the star’s 40th anniversary of her debut album.
Jackson released a teaser for the documentary, in which fellow musicians such as Mariah Carey and Paula Abdul speak about their relationship with the singer. Jackson’s family members make appearances as well, with clips of the late Michael Jackson with his younger sister in home videos, as well as Tito Jackson saying, “She will always be my baby sister.”
Beneath the teaser is Jackson’s 1986 “Control,” which speaks to how she has taken charge of her own narrative and would like to speak in her own words about her life. “This is my story told by me, not through someone else’s eyes,” Jackson says.

“American Skin,” the film written, directed by and starring actor Nate Parker, will land on BET+ next week following its premiere at the Venice Film Festival in 2019 and an on-demand run through Vertical Entertainment. The film will debut on the streaming platform April 15.
“American Skin” stars Parker and Omari Hardwick and follows a Black Iraq War veteran, Lincoln Jefferson (Parker), who after being denied a fair trial following the shooting death of his teenage son by a white police officer, desperately seeks justice and accountability for his son’s death.
Parker is the director of “The Birth of a Nation,” which was released at the height of #OscarsSoWhite and won the top prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 2016 for its depiction of Nat Turner’s slave rebellion. It was bought by Fox Searchlight for a festival record $17.5 million and was expected to be a major Oscar contender.

Exclusive: American Skin is coming to BET+ next week.
The Nate Parker directed, penned and starring drama will debut on the ViacomCBS-owned streaming service on April 15, I have learned.
This move online for American Skin comes after a lucrative Vertical Entertainment distributed run for the Spike Lee executive produced film on PVOD starting January 15. It also follows a chorus of public support for The Birth of a Nation director Parker’s sophomore feature and its critical focus on the criminal justice system and institutional racism from the likes of LeBron James and Selma star David Oyelowo.
A chorus the Tyler Perry and BET-backed BET+ is clearly adding its voice and platform to.
“While BET+ is a platform for promoting Black stories, it’s also a place for championing Black culture and advocating for our community,” said BET+ EVP and General Manager, Devin Griffin today. “When we first learned of the film’s ambitions,...

Exclusive: In the wake of receiving two Golden Globe nominations for its Sia-directed movie Music, Vertical Entertainment can boast that its Nate Parker feature American Skin has become one of the distributor’s highest grossing titles on PVOD with $4M over two weeks. American Skin debuted on Jan. 15 in select cinemas and on on-demand platforms such as Apple, Amazon, Vudu, and Google Play. American Skin‘s two-week figure bests the $2.5M+ that it accumulated over ten days for last summer’s Capone, a previous Vertical Entertainment high point.
I’m told that American Skin‘s PVOD success is largely due to a strategized social media initiative which received great support from the Black community who embraced the film with tastemakers such as Lebron James, Diddy, E40, David Oyelowo, and more.
In the spirit of Sidney Lumet’s 12 Angry Men and Dog Day Afternoon, American Skin follows a Black Iraqi War Vet,...

Netflix is closing the book on On My Block.
The streamer on Friday announced a 10-episode fourth season order for the hit comedy, which was named one of the streamer's most-binged series a few years back.
10 episodes mean that it will have two more episodes than On My Block Season 4, but this is perhaps to help close the series out.
News of the renewal was expected, but given that the third season dropped on Netflix almost a year ago, and the way that Netflix has been canceling previously renewed shows, its fate was very much up in the air.
Stars Sierra Capri, Jason Genao, Brett Gray, Diego Tinoco, Jessica Marie Garcia, and Julio Macias will all return for the last-ever season.
The cast of On My Block negotiated pay rises ahead of production on the third season, which included terms should the show be renewed for a fifth season.

Series stars Sierra Capri, Jason Genao, Brett Gray, Diego Tinoco, Jessica Marie Garcia and Julio Macias are all set to return for the 10-episode final outing, alongside co-creator and showrunner Lauren Iungerich.
Plot details for the new episodes have not been revealed, but Season 3, which premiered on Netflix last March, concluded with a two-year time jump that saw all the main characters go their separate ways.
In an interview with TV Guide last year, Iungerich said Season 4 would provide “definitive answers” regarding the characters’ split and their future. “[The time jump] opened up so many different ways and different avenues to really allow these characters to grow and spread their wings and for us to see their stories evolve and change, because that’s what happens,” she said at the time. “Your core...

Netflix has renewed “On My Block” for a fourth and final season.
For fans of the teen series holding their breath since the third season finale jumped forward a bit into the future, seeing the fracturing of the friend group at the core of the series, answers will be coming soon — but not too soon, as the streamer has not yet set a season premiere date for the new 10-episode season.
“On My Block” follows four bright and street-savvy friends navigating their way through the triumph, pain and the newness of high school set in the rough inner city of Freeridge. It mixes the usual adolescent concerns of family obligations, friendships and romantic relationships with tough topics including gang culture, death and Ptsd. It also includes some larger-than-life elements from kidnappings to a hunt for mysterious treasure. The third season streamed on Netflix in March 2020.

The show will return with 10 episodes with stars Sierra Capri, Jason Genao, Brett Gray, Diego Tinoco, Jessica Marie Garcia and Julio Macias back alongside co-creator Lauren Iungerich.
The series is a coming-of-age comedy about four bright and street-savvy friends navigating their way through the triumph, pain and the newness of high school set in the rough inner city.
Its third season, which consisted of eight episodes, premiered in March 2020.

It brings an end to the show, which was named by the streamer as its No.
