[This story contains spoilers from Heels season two, episode two, “The Journey is the Obstacle.”]
In one fell swoop, Heels star Kelli Berglund stole the show and the championship belt.
Created by Michael Waldron and run by Mike O’Malley, Heels is the professional wrestling world’s answer to Friday Night Lights, as Jack Spade (Stephen Amell) and his younger brother Ace Spade (Alexander Ludwig) are in a feud over their late father’s small-town Georgia wrestling promotion, Duffy Wrestling League (Dwl). Considering that both brothers are equally to blame for their fractured relationship, Berglund’s character, Crystal Tyler, quickly became the sympathetic fan favorite in their stead. After all, she began the acclaimed series in the thankless role of Ace’s valet, while also having an undefined toxic relationship with the younger Spade brother.
As season one progressed, it became clear that Crystal was not only a wrestling enthusiast, but also a highly skilled wrestler in her own right. And in the finale of the first season,...

Why aren't people watching this show?
Heels Season 2 Episode 2 is chock full of so many interesting character dynamics and life lessons; on top of that, it makes you feel good.
These aren't flawless people; they're deeply flawed and working hard as hell to be better people.
Let's start with the Ace size hole in the Dwl.
Oh, Jesus. The minute we get some momentum. These fuckin’ brothers, man. Now Ace quit? Rooster defected. Poc’s gone Awal, Bobby’s leg’s broken. Just fuckin’ great.

What would Hollywood be without a good ole Blaxploitation film? And now that “They Cloned Tyrone” has hit Netflix screens, conversations about the Blaxploitation movies that crawled so that “They Cloned Tyrone” could pimp walk have come to the forefront.
Juel Taylor’s film welcomes watchers to The Glen, a normal, everyday neighborhood where its predominately Black residents live out their lives shopping, going to church and enjoying the fruits of their labor. However, beneath the surface, but right in front of their eyes, the government is executing a plot to keep the community in an endless cycle of unhealthy behavior that ultimately blocks them from mental and financial wellness.

The official trailer for “Heels” Season 2 is finally here, and it’s clear we’re in for an emotional ride.
The sophomore season, which premieres July 28 on Starz, picks up after Jack Spade (Stephen Amell) has been through the ringer in his personal life after parting ways with his family. Meanwhile, his brother, Ace (Alexander Ludwig), is nowhere to be found.
“Who am I? A man who’s wife and son have left him and doesn’t know where is brother is,” Spade says in the trailer. “I don’t know what I have to do to find the guy that I was before, [but] I’m gonna figure it out.”
While Jack — and fans of the family-owned wrestling organization — question how to move forward without his brother at his side, Jack leans on his Duffy Wrestling League (Dwl) family as the group battles outside threats and Jack steps back into the ring.

For the stars and creative team of Heels, the Starz drama is more than just an inside look at the world of professional wrestling. Heels tackles universal themes that extend far beyond the the scripted fights and spandex-clad heroes and villains of Dwl for a deep and resonating story of passion, brotherhood, forgiveness and more.
“This show that Michael [Waldron] has created that we’ve all worked on is very deep,” said writer and showrunner Mike O’Malley during the show’s TCA panel on Thursday.
Penned by Waldron and O’Malley, Heels follows brothers Jack Spade (Stephen Amell) and Ace Spade (Alexander Ludwig) who seek to bring back their family-owned indie wrestling promotion and carry on their father’s legacy. In the ring, somebody must play the good guy and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel. But in the real world, those characters can be hard to live up to — or hard to leave behind.

If Arrow star Stephen Amell needed any help bringing Jack Spade, the lead character and baddie of the Dwl in Starz’s Heels, to life, he had a co-star nearby that could ensure he was authentically portraying a professional wrestler. Phil Brooks, better known as Cm Punk to wrestling fans, is set to appear in Heels as Ricky Rabies, a motor-mouthed heel who goes toe-to-toe with Spade and others in the Dwl.
Cm Punk is one of the most interesting figures in modern pro wrestling. Oh, how the mighty fall.
To Jack Spade, kayfabe is everything. He and Ace grew up with it. In the shadow of their father, Tom "King" Spade, they learned that your reputation is crafted, while real life should be kept private in the wrestling world.
On Heels Season 1 Episode 1, going off script and letting his town-level fame go to his head taught Duffy Wrestling Lead's hero, Ace Spade, a helluva lesson.
It's not as simple as that, of course.
Jack and Ace Spade spent their entire lives leading up to that moment at the end of the premiere.
We may have spent only 55 minutes in their world, but the pain, the shock, was just as sincere from our perspective.
Sibling rivalry is a bitch, but everything is heightened when you're living in the public eye. And when Tom Spade died, leaving the Dwl to Jack, they were no longer just...

The contemporary television landscape is littered with examples of ambitious-to-a-fault dramas built on lofty concepts and complex structures, shows that often burn fast and hot in a pilot, only to leave uncertainty about where they can possibly go. Such is not the case with “Heels,” Starz’ family drama about a small-town wrestling league and the sibling rivalry at its wobbly foundation.
“Heels” is built for endurance, not for speed, and it wouldn’t come as a surprise if, in another two seasons, it starts popping up in “TV’s best drama” conversations. That said, the journey toward realizing that potential is slow and amorphous for the first full half of its debut season. For a show set in such a potentially explosive environment, “Heels” comes with an awfully long fuse on it.

TV Fanatic spoke with Heels creator Michael Waldron and showrunner Mike O'Malley; both gentlemen are also executive producers on the series.
They shared thoughts on the creative process, including why wrestling was chosen as the backdrop of this new Starz drama.
Get all of their insights into Heels below.
Michael, what instigated you to create Heels in the first place?
Michael: I love wrestling, really. I mean, honestly, it's that. I've loved it since I was a little kid. I was drawn to it, I think, because growing up in the nineties, that was the only serialized storytelling that I could find on TV. I would watch the Power Rangers, and what happened one week did not affect what happened the next week.
And as a little kid, that really irritated me. And I didn't know why, and then I was drawn to wrestling because of the serialized nature of it.

Alexander Ludwig is a big, strong dude who starred on “Vikings,” a History channel show about big, strong dudes. These days he’s a lead on Starz drama “Heels,” a show about professional wrestlers — big, strong dudes (and women) who take big time punishment, regardless of the scripted nature of a match.
Ludwig is an athlete — he grew up skiing competitively — and a self-described “adrenaline junkie.”
The 29-year-old, who plays local wrestling rock star Ace Spade opposite big brother and Dwl (Duffy Wrestling League) Champion Jack Spade (Stephen Amell), said that training for and shooting the in-ring scenes for the new Starz wrestling drama “Heels” was “more painful than anything I’ve ever done.”
“My response to anybody who says wrestling is fake is, I go, ‘I dare you to run the ropes and take a flat-back bump and tell me that you think this is fake,’ because the only...

Late in the first episode of Heels, Jack Spade (Stephen Amell) tries to convince one of the wrestlers in his employ to turn heel — i.e., start playing the bad guy. The wrestler is reluctant; he doesn’t want to be booed by the crowd.

A sibling rivalry unlike any other. In this exclusive sneak peek from the Aug. 15 premiere of Starz's new drama Heels, brothers Ace Spade (Alexander Ludwig) and Jack Spade (Stephen Amell) brainstorm moves for their upcoming wrestling match. While Ace is clearly excited for the face off, Jack seems underwhelmed by his brother's ideas. "Try this one on for size," an excited Ace states before climbing to the top rope to flip off of it. "So, I get to the top turnbuckle here, moonsault. You catch me mid-air and, bam, slam me onto the ground." As he continues, Ace explains that this will fake out the audience, who will think he's done in the match. "But I get back up," he adds....

We have so much to share with you about Heels, the upcoming drama on Starz, premiering on August 15.
We had the opportunity to visit with the cast during their virtual press day, and we're bringing all of it to you.
Our first interview was with Alison Luff and Kelli Berglund. Alison plays Staci Spade, wife of Jack Spade (Stephen Amell), and Kelli is Crystal, valet for Ace Spade (Alexander Ludwig). Here's your opportunity to get to know a little bit about their characters before the premiere.
Kelli, starting with you, can each of you tell me a little bit about your characters and your perspective?
Kelli: Sure. So, Crystal is Ace's valet. And for those who don't know what a valet is, it's by definition a wrestler's manager, but I like to consider her kind of like a cheerleader as well. So she runs out in the ring with him...

Arrow alum Stephen Amell will soon lace up his leather boots in the wrestling drama Heels, premiering this Sunday at 9/8c on Starz.
He stars as Jack Spade, a family man and wrestler with big dreams to expand the Duffy Wrestling League, which he inherited from his father, beyond its small-town roots. The show, which was created by Michael Waldron (Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), finds Amell performing many of his character’s impressive in-ring moves, including a coast-to-coast leap from the top rope you’ll see in the first episode.

At the height of my wrestling and boy band obsession, I wrote a crossover fan fic in which *Nsync’s Justin Timberlake dated a WWE wrestler who was best friends with the Hardy Boyz and Lita. It was not good.

As Heels reviews come to light, you're likely to hear that the Michael Waldron (Loki) drama is reminiscent of Friday Night Lights.
That's not a bad comparison, but the sheer physicality needed from the Heels stars puts it on a different level than Fnl.
The uniqueness of the sport is also of note. While professional wrestling has an abundance of rabid fans, this is the first drama to shed light on the lifestyle.
The real comparison is with Audience Network's Kingdom, which focused on a family of Mma fighters, a gritty family drama that introduced an entirely new audience to Mma through its complex characters.
On Heels, Jack Spade (Stephen Amell) and his younger brother, Ace (Alexander Ludwig), are professional wrestlers trying to keep their father's legacy alive.
While Kingdom showcased the paternal relationship between a father and his three sons, Heels has Jack and Ace reeling after the sudden death of their father.

“When you’re in the ring you stick to my script,” Jack Spade reminds his little brother Ace (Alexander Ludwig), the star duo running Atlanta, Georgia’s Duffy Wrestling League (Dwl). Ace is a “face,” a.k.a. a good guy—the hero of the storyline. Jack gets the crowd riled up as his rival “heel,” the bad guy people showed up to watch get beaten.

No, that’s not WWE’s Adam “Edge” Copeland in the first-look photos for Starz’s upcoming series, “Heels,” it’s his “Vikings” co-star Alexander Ludwig. But the resemblance certainly is uncanny, which bodes well for pro-wrestling fans who were hoping the Ludwig- and Stephen Amell-led drama had an authentic aesthetic.
The first look images from “Heels,” which follows a family-owned wrestling promotion in small-town Georgia, show Amell and Ludwig all costumed up as wrestlers Jack Spade and his younger brother Ace Spade, respectively.
