[This story contains spoilers from season two, episode five of UnPrisoned.]
In season two of UnPrisoned, Paige (Kerry Washington) and Edwin (Delroy Lindo) mending the wounds of their still-shaky father-daughter relationship takes a backseat to their concerns about Finn (Faly Rakotohavana) and how being the son of a mother whose father was incarcerated for most of her life —and who has had no relationship with his own biological father — has affected him.
“I think that maybe the perception last year was that it was a show about a single woman whose father had spent the bulk of her life in prison, and a lot of the narrative did fuel that. But it is a show about a woman, her father and his grandson,” showrunner Yvette Lee Bowser tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It is a multi-generational family, and we have a multi-generational story.”

Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers for Season 2 of “UnPrisoned,” now streaming on Hulu.
Kerry Washington refuses to rest on her laurels. In the six years since wrapping up her seven-season run as political fixer Olivia Pope on ABC’s “Scandal,” which made her the first Black woman in nearly 40 years to lead a primetime network drama, Washington has ventured further into producing and directing — all while keeping an eye out for new acting roles that would diversify her body of work, and get her out of comfort zone.
Her latest TV project “UnPrisoned” is a dramatic — or, shall we say, “dramedic” — departure from the more serious work that has largely defined her career, but continues her tradition of playing messy, complicated women who must reckon with the scars of their painful past. In Hulu and Onyx Collective’s “UnPrisoned,” which is inspired by creator Tracy McMillan’s personal experiences,...

The second season of UnPrisoned finds Paige, Edwin, and Finn still navigating their family dynamics in the aftermath of Edwin’s time in prison. Creator Tracy McMillan draws from her own experiences in crafting this moving portrait of a family striving to reconnect despite past mistakes and traumas.
Paige is a therapist who helps others while struggling to manage her own anxieties. Viewers see her vulnerable side through Kerry Washington’s nuanced performance. Edwin, too, is coping with his return to the outside, played brilliantly by Delroy Lindo. Their young son Finn deals with his own pressures, as portrayed with insight by Faly Rakotohavana.
This season sees the family reconnect while seeking counseling from an eccentric new therapist, John Stamos. His unorthodox methods create humor but also drive home challenging truths. Through it all, the heart of the show remains Paige, Edwin, and Finn’s commitment to healing old wounds together.

Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoliers for the entirety of UnPrisoned Season 2.
For UnPrisoned creator Tracy McMillan, the goal of Season 2 of the Hulu and Onyx Collective series was to take the Alexander family from rupture to repair.
In Season 1 of the comedy series, Edwin Alexander (Delroy Lindo) got out of prison after a 17-year sentence for dealing drugs and moved in with his daughter Paige (Kerry Washington), who is a therapist and social media influencer. Paige had misgivings about letting her father around her teenage son Finneas (Faly Rakotohavana), but they ultimately decided to go for it so that her dad could have the best chance staying out of jail. The series is based on McMillan’s life experience.

When the Kerry Washington and Delroy Lindo dramedy UnPrisoned debuted as Onyx Collective’s most-watched Hulu premiere in March 2023 and became the most-watched original scripted series of the year, a second seasoned seemed like a sure bet. Yet renewal news for the Tracy McMillan-created show of which Yvette Lee Bowser is executive producer and showrunner, came later than fans, and perhaps even the cast, anticipated, with the writers and actors strikes delaying the green light until November of last year.
“Getting a season two is such a dream come true on any show, but to live through the strike and be able to be together felt like we’d really survived something,” lead actress and executive producer Washington tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I think we’re even more grateful, more appreciative. The streamer has picked up a second season of UnPrisoned, which stars Washington as a single mother whose world is upended when her father (Delroy Lindo) is released from prison and moves in with her and her son. The series comes from Disney’s Onyx Collective and ABC Signature; Washington and Lindo are also executive producers.
Under the renewed deal, Washington’s Simpson Street company will continue developing and producing TV projects for ABC Signature. Simpson Street has been based at the studio since 2016 and has previously produced Hulu’s limited series Little Fires Everywhere and Reasonable Doubt, which has been renewed for a second season.
“Kerry is the gold standard for a what a multihyphenate should be — passionate, prolific and endlessly kind,” said Tracy Underwood, executive vp creative affairs at ABC Signature.

“The story itself is just so compelling… it’s all about healing,” shares Caroline B. Marx about what drew her to the new Hulu series “UnPrisoned,” which centers on a daughter attempting to reconcile with her father after his 17-year prison sentence. The costume designer appreciated that the show is “based on reality” — it draws inspiration from the life of creator Tracy McMillan — and that it is “socially relevant.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Kerry Washington stars as Paige, a relationship therapist who welcomes her father Edwin (Delroy Lindo) into her home despite the effects his incarceration had on her as a child. Marx collaborated closely with the actress to pick the color palate of Paige’s fashion, which McMillan had described to her as “Minneapolis but by way of Brooklyn.” The creator conceived of Paige as a “hipster but she’s adulting now,” but Tracy herself “doesn’t wear color at all,...

‘UnPrisoned’ Creator Tracy McMillan Breaks Down Series Finale, Shares Storyline Ideas for a Season 2
“UnPrisoned” creator and executive producer Tracy McMillan says she’s happy with the outcome of her dramedy, and tells TheWrap that she already has storyline ideas for a second season.
“I’m really pleased with where we ended up and where we took these characters,” McMillan said. “I’m excited to see where we go next. I feel like we really told a story about a family trying to put itself back together again and we told it with a lot of heart and a lot of humor.”
The Onyx Collective-Hulu original series dropped all its eight episodes on Hulu on March 10, and it is now Onyx’s most-watched Hulu premiere to date, as well as the most-watched Hulu Original scripted series thus far this year, as far as hours watched, according to Onyx.

“I think the single most important thing that I wanted to get right was to depict a justice-impacted family accurately,” shares Tracy McMillan about one of her goals in writing the new Hulu series “UnPrisoned.” The show is based in part on her life story, as her father spent much of her life in prison while she grew up in foster homes. The creator, writer, and executive producer adds, “I wanted to tell a story that showed the humanity of the person who had been in prison — the career criminal — and I wanted to show the humanity of the people around them, the people who love them.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Hulu's "UnPrisoned" is the unconventional father-daughter story we've yet to see on television, but it's a necessary watch that speaks to a lot of real-world topics. The heartwarming dramedy - created and executive produced by Tracy McMillan - premiered on the streamer on March 10, introducing viewers to a "messy but perfectionist relationship therapist and single mom" named Paige (played by Kerry Washington), "whose life is turned right-side-up when her dad, [Edwin], (Delroy Lindo) gets out of prison and moves in with her and her teenage son, Finn (Faly Rakotohavana)."

Tracy McMillan, the creator and executive producer of Onyx Collective/Hulu’s newest dramedy “UnPrisoned,” says she didn’t create the series as a “favor” for the audience, but rather as an outlet to work through her own trauma.
She’s an author, realtionship expert, TV writer and now the creator of “UnPrisoned,” a half-hour dramedy based on McMillan’s life adjusting to her now-late father re-entering her life after being freed from prison. The series stars Kerry Washington, who plays Paige, the “UnPrisoned” version of McMillan. While Paige’s father’s (Delroy Lindo) transition out of incarceration establishes the show, viewers eventually peel back even more layers of her life, which involves traumatic memories from prison visits and living in foster homes.
The storyline mirrors McMillan’s real life growing up with a criminal for a father and going in and out of foster homes. And while it’s...

Like any good shrink, Hulu’s UnPrisoned begins by meeting its characters where they are, and where they are at first seems to be an odd-couple comedy. Paige (Kerry Washington) is a therapist whose Instagram-friendly polish masks a messy personal life; her father, Edwin (Delroy Lindo), is a natural charmer fresh off a 17-year prison sentence. It doesn’t take a relationship expert to foresee the battles to come over old grudges, new boundaries or Paige’s teenage son Finn (Faly Rakotohavana) — and indeed, most of them come to pass over the season’s eight episodes.
But also like a good shrink, UnPrisoned has no interest in sticking to the surface. It wants to dig and dig and dig, all the way down to the kinds of formative childhood traumas that take a lifetime to unpack. The journey isn’t always a pleasant one; the contrast between the series’ bubbly...

“I’ve got one daughter, and you’ve got one daddy,” Edwin (Delroy Lindo) reminds his daughter Paige (Kerry Washington) in the trailer for the new Hulu series “UnPrisoned.” Their relationship is at the heart of the comedy, in which they reunite after Edwin spent 17 years in prison on drug charges. Based on writer and executive producer Tracy McMillan’s own life, the show will chronicle how that reunion unfolds and the impact Edwin has on Paige and her son, Finn (Faly Rakotohavana), when he moves in with them. All ten episodes premiere on Friday, March 10. Watch the full trailer above.

The cast of Hulu’s latest dramedy “Unprisoned” kept the family spirit alive at the show’s premiere at the Hollywood Legion Theater on Thursday night.
The show’s cast and crew — including Kerry Washington, Delroy Lindo, Faly Rakotohavana, Marque Richardson, Jee Young Han, Jordyn McIntosh, showrunner Yvette Lee Bowser and creator Tracy McMillan — examined what it means to be a “traditional” family on the red carpet before a screening of the first two episodes.
The series follows relationship therapist and single mom Paige (Washington), “whose life is turned right-side-up when her dad (Lindo) gets out of prison and moves to her house to live with her and her teenage son,” according to the show’s official synopsis.
“I wanted to show a family that every person in America would identify with, even though they’re facing very specific circumstances,” McMillan told Variety. “This is at its heart, a father-daughter story.

The story follows Sam, a teen second in line to the throne who pretty much wants nothing to do with being royal. But when Sam is one day recruited into a secret society with fellow second-born royals, they all discover that they have superhuman abilities and must work together at a top-secret training camp so they can save the world.
Ahead of the film's release on Sept. 25, we sat down with Peyton Elizabeth Lee (Sam), Niles Fitch (Tuma), Isabella Blake-Thomas (January), Olivia Deeble (Roxana), Noah Lomax (Mike), and Faly Rakotohavana (Matteo) to test their knowledge of classic Disney Princess movies. The cast quizzed...

Disney’s ‘Secret Society of Second-Born Royals’ features princesses, superheroes and action. Now streaming on Disney Plus, the film follows Sam (Peyton Elizabeth Lee), the second-born princess of the kingdom of Illyria. She lives in the shadow of her perfect older sister, Eleanor (Ashley Liao).
Sam is sent to summer school, and discovers she’s actually entered a training program for second-born royals, who each have unique superpowers to help secretly protect their kingdoms. There, she’s joined by fellow second-borns January (Isabella Blake-Thomas), Tuma (Niles Fitch), Roxana (Olivia Deeble) and Matteo (Faly Rakotohavana) to learn from their instructor James (Skylar Astin).
For director Anna Mastro, ensuring the safety of her cast was of upmost importance. Mastro recruited Matt Mullins (“Ford v. Ferrari”) as her trusted stunt coordinator to work with the team and train them in their newfound superpowers.
How did working with a group of kids differ from working with an individual actor?...

While the province seems like a faraway land, it's merely movie magic as the film was actually shot in Ontario, Canada, during the summer of 2019. Most of production took place in Downtown Toronto, and the school where the teens hone their abilities was lodged at the University of Toronto Mississauga. Many of the school scenes were filmed specifically in the Hart House Building, which the university describes as "a student-focused centre for the arts, dialogue, and wellness."

A first-born royal may inherit the throne, but on Disney+, it’s the younger sibling that rules. All that and more is explained in the just-released trailer for Secret Society of Second-Born Royals, a new movie premiering Friday, July 17.
The movie stars Peyton Elizabeth Lee (Andi Mack) as Sam, a “rebellious teenage royal who unknowingly develops superpowers from a genetic trait attributed only to second-borns of royal lineage. Second-in-line to the throne of the kingdom of Illyria, Sam constantly questions what it means to be royal and wants to create her own legacy. Unlike Sam’s picture-perfect older sister Eleanor...

Mick Garris, Joe Dante and David Slade are among the horror directors contributing to Nightmare Cinema, an entertaining anthology in the spirit of Garris’ Masters of Horror TV show. The stories themselves have a surprisingly high hit rate, but the film is let down by its poorly thought-out linking concept. The set-up is almost too simple, taking the title entirely literally. When random people walk past the well-lit-but-seemingly-abandoned Rialto cinema, they see their name appear on the marquee. Intrigued, they enter the cinema, where a creepy projectionist (Mickey Rourke as The Projectionist) shows them a film that features their death.
