Action thrillers are easy wins on free streaming, and that is proven again as the little known Chris Pine and Kiefer Sutherland movie The Contractor debuted on the Freevee chart at number two. Released in 2022, the movie had a very low-key box office run, and very quickly disappeared into the bargain bin. Now, its arrival on Freevee has had the expected effect of putting the forgotten thriller in front of an eager waiting audience.
Directed by Tarik Saleh, The Contractor follows the story of James Harper (Pine), a former Special Forces sergeant struggling to make ends meet after being involuntarily discharged from the army. Desperate to provide for his family, he joins a private contracting organization run by Rusty Jennings (Sutherland). But when a covert mission goes awry, Harper finds himself on the run, unsure whom he can trust and torn between loyalty to his country and his own survival.

The long-awaited Borderlands movie finally hit theatres on 8th August 2024 and has finally transitioned into digital media less than three weeks after its release. Directed by Eli Roth, the film has faced a turbulent journey from production to release, with reshoots, delays, and a significant creative overhaul. Despite its star-studded cast, including Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jack Black, the movie has been met with overwhelmingly negative reviews, holding piss poor 9% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. Our very own critic at High on Films called it the ‘worst movie of the year.’ Now, as more viewers are likely to pay attention to the video game adaptation after its lukewarm performance during the theatrical run, the chaotic and action-packed events that unfold on the desolate planet of Pandora, many may find themselves being puzzled by Borderlands (2024)’s various turns and ending.

Dolph Lundgren and Carl Weathers were initially adversaries both on and off-camera in Rocky IV. In a recent interview, Lundgren explained why he felt Weathers was always sore about their characters' fight in the 1985 sports movie.
Speaking with Screen Rant during a Fan Expo panel, Lundgren shared how he didn't get to spend much time with Weathers before they were thrown into the ring together to shoot the fight between Ivan Drago and Apollo Creed. "Well, I didn't know Carl [before Rocky IV]. I knew Stallone because we boxed and trained together for six months, and he was my boss. We were in the ring six days a week, so you push each other around, you're sparring, and you get to know each other. But Carl, I didn't know," he explained. "When I first met him, we were shooting the fight of Apollo versus Drago in Las Vegas, and Carl showed up two days before.

2024 is one to forget for Lionsgate, but Borderlands stands out as the studio's biggest box office flop. Following a disastrous $9 million opening weekend, the movie concluded its month-long run at the box office with a dismal $31 million before limping on to Digital platforms.
With a production budget of $115 million and a $30 million marketing campaign - which saw fans of the hit series of games largely reject everything they were seeing - the studio has likely lost upwards of $114 million.
Over on Rotten Tomatoes, Borderlands is one of the worst-reviewed movies of the year with a dire 10% score. According to the Critics Consensus, "Glitching out in every department, Borderlands is balderdash." Fans, on the other hand, awarded it a slightly better but still-Rotten 51%.
Roth is believed to have run into creative differences with the studio and was reportedly replaced by Deadpool and Terminator: Dark Fate director Tim Miller for reshoots.

It's been a difficult year for Lionsgate, but Borderlands stands out as the studio's biggest box office flop.
Lionsgate has now shared its second-quarter financial results (via GameFragger.com), singling out Borderlands as one of its biggest money-losers.
Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said, "Within our television Group, our unscripted business is feeling the effects of a continuing market correction. In our film group, the poor box office performance of Borderlands, coupled with softer-than-anticipated results for other releases in the quarter, reflected an environment with less margin for error than ever before.

Borderlands was a genuine bomb. No doubt about it. The adaptation of the acclaimed video game franchise grossed just $33 million in theaters and was absolutely trashed by critics. During a recent earnings call, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer spoke about the epic failure of Borderlands.
“On Borderlands, nearly everything that could go wrong did go wrong: it sat on the shelf for too long during the pandemic, and reshoots and rising interest rates took it outside the safety zone of our usual strict financial models,” Feltheimer said. With a budget of around $120 million, Borderlands stands to lose the studio a lot of money. Although Lionsgate did mitigate some of the risks by selling foreign rights, sources told Deadline that Borderlands could still lose as much as $30 million. “The success of our financial models doesn’t take the place of also getting the creative right,” Feltheimer added

Stars: Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Edgar Ramírez, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, Gina Gershon, Jamie Lee Curtis | Written by Eli Roth, Joe Crombie | Directed by Eli Roth
Directed by Eli Roth, Borderlands is an adaptation of the popular video game series developed by Gearbox Software. Essentially an action thriller about a rag-tag gang of space mercenaries, it tries hard to generate Guardians of the Galaxy vibes, but is let down by a lack of chemistry between the cast, largely flat direction and a series of uninspired fight scenes.
The story centres on kick-ass bounty hunter Lilith (Cate Blanchett), who’s hired to find Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), the missing daughter of business tycoon Atlas, the richest and most powerful man in the universe. To do so, Lilith has to return to her home planet of Pandora, where she quickly finds Tina and discovers that she may be a long-prophesied...

Eli Roth’s Borderlands film comes to DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK this November – more on the release here.
After something akin to a crash and burn at the box office in August, Lionsgate will be hoping for better return when Borderlands gets its physical media release. It was quickly made available on video on demand services, but the studio has – and good on it – committed to a full physical media release for the film as well.
Directed by Eli Roth, the film is an adaptation of the videogame series, and it attracted quite a cast too. Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Jamie Lee Curtis are all part of the ensemble. Our review of the film – and we were one of the few who got something out of it, it seems – can be found here.

A team of VFX artists is ripping the Borderlands movie apart. The adaptation of the hit video game franchise, Borderlands featured an all-star cast. Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis, Florian Munteanu, and numerous other stars signed on, but none were enough to save it. Despite having a budget of over $110 million, it earned just $30 million at the box office. According to sources, international pre-sales covered a significant portion of the budget, but the total was undoubtedly still disappointing for a franchise with so much potential.
The Corridor Crew, a VFX team with a strong presence on YouTube, believes that the failure is largely attributable to visual issues. In the latest iteration of their "VFX Artists React to Bad & Great CGi" series, they tackled the painful issues with this adaptation. In particular, they identified the bar scene and the sniper attack as visually problematic. While mocking the...

High-profile movies tend to stack their casts with as many A-listers as possible, resulting in some that have amazing ensemble casts and completely waste them. In contrast to movies that handle ensembles well, these lesser movies act as though the mere presence of so many stars is enough to make it a success and ensure its longevity. However, screen time is divided poorly among the stars, individual characters aren't complex enough to merit such an actor playing them, or the movie is just below the people who are in it.
The best ensemble TV shows of all time at least have the luxury of enough screen time to get to everyone eventually, while ensemble movies have to be more strategic about it. Screen Rant's Borderlands review, similar to other assessments, argues that the actors are making a huge effort, but the movie just isn't that great. Such is the problem...

“Borderlands” is an action movie starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart. With Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana Greenblatt and Florian Munteanu. It is directed by Eli Roth.
When you have the likes of Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Jamie Lee Curtis leading the charge in a film, you’re assured a certain level of excellence in the production. At the very least, you can expect the movie to exude quality. “Borderlands” is an exuberant spectacle of high-caliber mischief, boasting impressive visual effects and a script that doesn’t overcomplicate itself. It’s a wild, unbridled, and utterly entertaining ride.
This comedy quickly abandons any pretense of serious storytelling within the first five minutes, opting instead to revel in its fresh, carefree, and anarchic style. Despite its chaotic nature, it carries that unmistakable Jack Black flair: a film that pushes boundaries just enough to be provocative while remaining suitable for all audiences,...

Borderlands is getting another shot at finding an audience. Lionsgate has revealed that the video game adaptation will be heading to PVOD this Friday.
Although Borderlands has been in theaters for less than a month, the movie has been a major flop at the box office. At the time of writing, Borderlands has only grossed $25.1 million worldwide off a budget of $120 million, becoming one of the biggest box-office bombs of all time. This is likely why Lionsgate is releasing Borderlands on PVOD on Friday, Aug. 30, hoping that those who don't frequent the theater (or read reviews) will buy or rent the movie at home.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu believes Shang-Chi 2 can't be made without one major name. The film franchise's lead actor insists on Oscar-winning actor Michelle Yeoh being involved in the planned sequel.
Speaking with Collider at Fan Expo Canada, Liu expressed his desire for Yeoh's return in Shang-Chi 2 and how much of a positive influence Yeoh had during Legend of the Ten Rings filming. Liu pointed to his and Yeoh's characters' fight scenes in Legend of the Ten Rings, revealing how much fun they were to do. Borderlands is coming home... less than a month after it was released in theaters.
Lionsgate has announced that the star-studded but critically-panned video game adaptation will be available to purchase on Premium Video on Demand (PVOD) and Premium Electronic Sell-Through (Est) from this Friday, August 30.
We didn't expect the movie to stay in theaters for too much longer after a disastrous stint at the box office (it grossed just over $24 million with an estimated $120 million budget), but its home release is happening quite a bit sooner than analysts had predicted.
There's always a slim chance the movie will find a new lease of life on Digital and Blu-ray, but between the dismal Bo returns and the similarly awful reviews, it's probably safe to assume that this franchise is well and truly dead in the water.

As of this writing, Eli Roth's new action-comedy "Borderlands," based on the popular video game series, has grossed just over $24 million at the box office. This is an abysmal number, given that the film cost an estimated $120 million to make. It's a little too early to call it one of the biggest box office bombs of all time, but it's certainly one of the biggest bombs of the year. Given that it was based on a beloved video game property, the failure of "Borderlands" was particularly visible to a mass audience, playing into a long held prejudice against game adaptations. There are only scant great films to have been based on video games, and "Borderlands" certainly isn't one of them.

The transformation of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty into Avengers: Doomsday following various creative changes seemingly cost one Marvel Cinematic Universe hero a major role. A new report confirms Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu's title character was set to be a big presence in the upcoming Avengers sequel before rewrites occurred.
According to Inverse, Liu was initially penned in as one of the Avengers follow-up's main stars when The Kang Dynasty was in development. However, after The Kang Dynasty title was dropped following Marvel's firing of Kang actor Jonathan Majors last December due to his assault and harassment convictions, plans changed. The report noted that there's still a chance Shang-Chi will play a key role in Doomsday if the next MCU movie on the docket, Captain America: Brave New World, introduces a new Avengers lineup as teased.

Eli Roth’s Borderlands movie is exiting cinemas at some speed, as Lionsgate prepares a video on demand release within weeks.
Much has been made of the $100m asking price for the long-awaited movie adaptation of the videogame series Borderlands. The successful games though were finally turned into a film of some resources, with Eli Roth directing and co-writing the script.
Still, even though there were a few outliers, the critical consensus was that Eli Roth and his team hadn’t quite hit the mark here. Furthermore, the box office returns suggest that Lionsgate’s investment in the feature might take some time to recoup, and that the cinema days of Borderlands have come to a fairly abrupt end.
As per the modern way then, it’s perhaps unsurprising that the movie will now be leaping to premium video on demand services at some speed. While we await a UK announcement,...

Things keep getting worse for Borderlands, which just suffered the worst second-week drop of any 2024 release. Borderlands opened in theaters on August 9, 2024, to abysmal reviews, resulting in a 9% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes and a terrible D+ CinemaScore. Word of mouth about the movie quickly spread, and the film opened to a meager $8.6 million in its opening weekend, landing in the number four spot at the box office. Things only got worse as the film headed into weekend two.
Borderlands plummeted at the box office in its second weekend, grossing just $2.35 million in 3,125 theaters. ScreenRant reported that this is a 72% decline, making it the worst drop for a wide-release movie in 2024, beating out MaXXXine's 69.1% drop and The Bikerider's 65.9% drop. The new Eli Roth movie, based on the video game franchise of the same name, features a star-studded cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Edgar Ramrez, Gina Gershon, and Jamie Lee Curtis. Although sources say that more than half of the movie's production costs were covered by international licensing, the Borderlands box office nevertheless disappointed during its opening weekend when it had a global debut of just $16 million against its roughly $120 million budget.

In a biting critique of the latest summer movie, Borderlands shared a newly released satirical poster titled Boredomlands. The satirical poster mimics the original in style, with a few key differences that sharply critique the films underwhelming performance.
The artwork, shared by the popular @weeklyplanetposters, reimagines the promotional material for the Borderlandsa highly anticipated video game adaptation that has struggled to find its footing both critically and commercially. The satirical poster takes direct aim at the films shortcomings. While the original Borderlands poster depicted the team of misfits in a dynamic, action-packed pose, the altered version retains this imagery but replaces the films title with the critical moniker Boredomlands. The tagline, chaos loves company, remains, adding to the irony as it juxtaposes the film's chaotic promise with the dull reality that viewers seem to have experienced.

Borderlands is currently playing in theaters, but almost certainly not for long. Audiences and critics alike have excoriated Eli Roth's film, with many calling it the worst video game movie since Uwe Boll was churning them out. But, one cast member (besides the ever-great Ariana Greenblatt) who's seemed to avoid constant criticism is Florian Munteanu, who portrays the masked and brutal Vault Hunter Krieg, an iconic character from the video games the film is based on.
Just before the film hit theaters, Munteanu participated in the press rounds for the film, including sitting down with ComicBook. They asked him if, should the first movie succeed, he'd be interested in making a prequel for his character. This was his response:
"100%. The prequel would be something that I would really, really love to do, just because there's so much to tell in that story, right? Me, as a fan personally, I...

Spoilers are ahead for the Borderlands movie's ending.
Cate Blanchett's star power was misused in Borderlands, which made a major mistake by making Lilith the clear-cut main character. Borderlands failed to adapt the beloved characters and ensemble-driven storytelling of the video game series. Altering characters like Tiny Tina to serve Lilith's story undermine the essence of the Borderlands franchise.
There's no denying that two-time Oscar-winning actor Cate Blanchett is an asset to every film she's part of, but, unfortunately, her character of Lilith began a chain reaction of problems for the Borderlands movie. An adaptation of Gearbox Software's bestselling video game series of the same name, Borderlands landed a dismal Rotten Tomatoes score right out of the gate. With terrible buzz from critics and audiences alike, director Eli Roth's Borderlands became a box office disappointment, garnering less than $10 million over its opening weekend against a $120 million budget.

The Borderlands movie (2024) differs greatly from the game, focusing on comedic elements and a star-studded ensemble cast. Main characters like Lilith and Roland are portrayed differently in the film, with changes in age, personality, and background. The addition of original characters like Atlas and changes to fan-favorites like Tiny Tina showcase deviations from the game's storyline.
The new Borderlands movie arrived in theaters in 2024, but Eli Roth's Borderlands cast vs. game differs greatly in their portrayals. The Gearbox video game series of the same name blends first-person shooting with role-playing elements in a space-western environment. There were three main games and several spinoffs focusing on different parts of this universe. A critical and financial disaster, the Borderlands movie has failed to generate box office returns domestically. Despite boasting an impressive cast like Cate Blanchett, the film faced universal derision and did not meet expectations. The failure of the movie signals potential repercussions for the console-to-screen adaptation pipeline and may lead to budget cuts in the future.
Slagged off as a discount Guardians of the Galaxy and a dumpster fire by the more vocal denizens of the film criticism community, Borderlands is an unmitigated dud, no matter how you parse it. Borderlands movie breaks records with a disappointing 9% Rotten Tomatoes score, disappointing many involved. Cate Blanchett and eight other actors set personal record lows with their involvement in Borderlands. Director Eli Roth sees Borderlands as his worst-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes, with only a 9% rating.
Borderlands' Rotten Tomatoes score breaks several records, just not in the way everyone involved would have hoped. The first-ever live-action adaptation of 2K and Gearbox's popular video game franchise attracted top talent from across Hollywood. Lionsgate eventually landed Eli Roth as the director, with Cate Blanchett and others headlining Borderlands' cast of characters. The talent involved even grew through the movie's reshoots, which brought Deadpool's Tim Miller aboard to handle the additional photography. All this was done in the hopes that the Borderlands' reviews and the general response would be favorable, leading to a box office hit franchise.

It was more of a good-natured battle than usual for the top spot at the box office this past weekend. Most of the attention was on Blake Lively's It Ends With Us taking on what ended up being three-time champion Deadpool & Wolverine, starring her spouse, Ryan Reynolds. It wouldn't even be fair to call Lionsgate Films' Borderlands an afterthought; over the course of its three-day debut, it only netted $8.8 million.
The movie's bar to clear steadily decreased as it neared release, with trailers failing to generate any sort of excitement. Yet, it couldn't clear the bottom-of-the-barrel projection of $10 million the same way it couldn't clear 10% on Rotten Tomatoes. In fact, it only generated just over half of what Twisters made... in its fourth weekend. Read our review to get our take on the movie's quality.

Borderlands movie changes story by focusing on Lilith & Atlas, missing key characters like Handsome Jack, creating mixed reactions. The latest post-apocalyptic landscape sprawling wannabe sci-fi epic, Borderlands is not only both and extremely tedious and dull film, but it is also strikingly uninteresting and consequently sets a new low standard for director Eli Roth, whose previous output was nothing to brag about either.

This young lady – named Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt) – is currently on the run with Roland (Kevin Hart) and Krieg (Florian Munteanu), when Lilith catches up to her and, with the assistance of Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis) and wise-cracking robot Claptrap (Jack Black), becomes intertwined in a quest to unearth the greatest secrets in the universe (all of which appear to be stored somewhere inside a planet called Pandora.

As the movie adaption of the video game Borderlands finally gears up to hit theaters, the critical reception has been shocking, with the film sitting at an incredibly low 10% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 29 on Metacritic. Surprisingly, in an age where video game adaptions are proving to be big business, including titles such as The Last of Us and Super Mario Brothers Movie, Borderlands has proven to be something of a complete derailment of the surge in popular adaptations. Because of this lackluster reception, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick is urging audiences to reserve judgment and give the movie a fair chance.

The Vault on Pandora contains Eridian technology that can greatly benefit the power-hungry Atlas. Tiny Tina's genetic ties to the Eridians make her the key to opening the Vault in the Borderlands movie. Just like in the video game series, the Destroyer emerges as the monster in the Vault, setting up a potential sequel.
From the start, Eli Roth's Borderlands movie leads viewers to wonder what, exactly, is in the Vault on Pandora. Based on Gearbox's bestselling video game series of the same name, the action-comedy flick borrows from Borderlands' eccentric cast of characters and unique lore, but it doesn't merely graft one of the source material's stories onto the silver-screen experience. Given Borderlands' dismal (and rare) Rotten Tomatoes score, the movie might have fared better had it stuck closer to the games' narrative and undeniable charm. However, the movie does retain one plot point: a cryptic Vault on the planet Pandora.

The Borderlands movie takes creative liberties with Tiny Tina's origin story, making her Atlas' daughter. Tiny Tina has an interesting genetic history that makes her valuable to Atlas. The Borderlands movie combines elements from multiple games into a single story, reshaping characters like Tina to fit Lilith's narrative.
Although director Eli Roth's action-comedy film adaptation of Borderlands uses the bestselling video games as inspiration, the movie takes massive liberties when it comes to Tiny Tina's origin story. Eli Roth’s long-awaited Borderlands movie has finally hit theaters, but unfortunately, it isn’t off to a great start. The project started production in 2021, and according to stunt coordinator Jimmy O’Dee, they were told that Borderlands would shoot with the assumption that it would be R-rated.
“We were shooting an R-rated movie when we did it. We always knew that we were going to go either 15 or R rating, it’s 15 in UK, for a slightly mature audience,” O’Dee told ScreenRant. “So, we were blowing people’s heads off. Lionsgate and director Eli Roth's Borderlands video game adaptation arrives in theaters today on the heels of some of the worst reviews we've seen for a major studio release in quite some time.
As we know, negative reviews don't always have an impact on audience interest, but in this instance, it's probably safe to say that cinemagoers haven't exactly been convinced to give it a shot!
Despite a starry cast and a family-friendly PG-13 rating, the movie took in just $1.3 million from Thursday night previews, and is now tracking to earn between $10M-$18M at the domestic box office over the course of its opening weekend.
International numbers could wind up giving it a bit of a boost, but taking Borderlands' estimated $100M+ budget into account, and we're almost certainly looking at a massive flop here.
It's not all bad news, though, because Borderlands is no longer showing as 0% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Borderlands movie received negative reviews due to underdeveloped characters, lack of chemistry, and poor script and action sequences. The ensemble cast led by Cate Blanchett couldn't save the film, with critics noting the lack of character depth and believable relationships. Critics found Borderlands to be a wannabe Guardians of the Galaxy knockoff, with Cate Blanchett being the only bright spot in the film.
The Borderlands movie reviews are awful, and there are several reasons why critics' thoughts are so negative. With a director like Eli Roth and a Borderlands cast led by Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, and others, there was originally plenty of hope that the film could continue Hollywood's relatively strong streak of producing good video game movie adaptations. But as the marketing continued on and production issues arose, concerns about the overall quality started to mount. It didn't help that Lionsgate held back...

Borderlands, the newest video game adaptation, is now playing in movie theaters. Directly inspired by the video games, the movie is directed by Eli Roth and features a star-studded ensemble cast.
To promote the film's release, Cbr's Kevin Polowy spoke with Roth along with Borderlands stars Kevin Hart, Edgar Ramirez, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Florian Munteanu. During the conversation, Roth explained was asked if it was daunting to take on such a popular franchise. He said that it would have been if there was more scrutiny placed on his work, as is the case with other video game adaptations, but he was conversely given lots of creative freedom with Borderlands.

Jamie Lee Curtis is getting freaky again, and having the time of her life doing it.
During an interview for her new film “Borderlands” alongside co-star Cate Blanchett, the Oscar winner excitedly dished on “Freaky Friday 2,” the follow-up to her hit 2003 body-swap comedy.
The sequel, which Curtis says concludes production in about two weeks, reunites her with a now-grown-up Lindsay Lohan. “Lindsay’s a mommy. Little Luai just had his first birthday a week ago. It changes you as a human, being a parent. She’s very conservative, so I was like, ‘Relax. Relax.’ Luai’s just starting to walk. She’s at that point where toddlers hold onto things, then they wobble, then they go down. She’s at work, and she’s watching on her phone,” Curtis says.
“She’s watching videos on livestream with the baby in between scenes. She’s watching her child start toddling,...

In a galaxy far, far away, a psychotic wasteland dweller is strapped to a pole with explosives. Thirteen-year-old Tiny Tina comes skipping along, singing “Pop Goes the Weasel” before detonating the explosives and causing bits of the psychotic wasteland dweller to litter the landscape. She then introduces our hero to “the fine-ass ladies”—two explosive-stuffed rabbits named Mushy Snugglebites and Felicia Sexopants—who can help them with a major heist.
As juvenile as that description is, I wish I could tell you that Eli Roth’s Borderlands starts by directly copying an iconic scene from the Borderlands 2 game that introduces the ever-chaotic and maniacally performed Tiny Tina in an act of cartoonish violence. At least that would show that, like the games in the series, the film had some semblance of a personality, even if it’s a 4chan anon’s idea of one. And that would at least be...
