Riverdale has a complicated legacy in pop culture. Despite being one of the final popular teen dramas to follow the 22-episode format and having seven seasons to its name, many remember the show for its bizarre storylines. The series, which started out as a simple murder mystery, went off the rails rather quickly after that.
The series, which ran from 2017 to 2023, was based on the light-hearted Archie Comics. The series, however, featured the characters of the small town of Riverdale dealing with threats from masked killers, organ-harvesting cults, aliens, witches, and parallel dimensions and timelines. Out of the 137 Riverdale episodes, ten episodes stood out as especially bizarre, leaving audiences confused and dumbfounded.

Kj Apa hasn't closed the door on a possible return as Riverdale's Archie Andrews. The actor is open to reprising the role of America's favorite redhead, but only if a certain condition is met.
While speaking with Elite Daily to promote his new movie One Fast Move, Apa was asked if he'd ever be interested in appearing as Archie in his co-star Maia Reficco's Max series, Pretty Little Liars, which shares continuity with Riverdale. "100%, Id do it. I miss Riverdale. I miss everyone on that show. Not a day goes by where I dont think about it," Apa said, before adding that he'd only return if he didn't have to dye his hair red. "Id do it, but not if they dye my hair. I wouldnt dye my hair again," meaning that Apa would likely need to wear a wig to achieve Archie's iconic red hair.

Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa recently shared the original pitch for the long-running Archie Comics adaptation's final season.
"Originally, when we pitched the season, one of the ideas that we pitched was that the first 13 episodes would be in the ’50s, and then starting around Episode 14 or so, we would start moving in time," Aguirre-Sacasa told TVLine. "So Episode 14 would be set in the ’60s, Episode 15 would be set in the ’70s, and then the ’80s, the ’90s… kind of working through to the present day.”

Unfortunately, Aguirre-Sacasa revealed that the budget they received for the seventh and final season quickly made all of that time-hopping outside the realm of possibility, which didn't seem to upset the writers too much since they had already done "a more elaborate time travel, time-jumping plot" in Season 6. Riverdale's series finale explores the at-times ridiculousness of its source material, offering a fun and meta-filled conclusion. The core four characters of Betty, Veronica, Archie, and Jughead end up in a polyamorous "quad," while other fan-favorite pairings also stick. The Riverdale gang drifts apart over time, offering a heartbreaking twist that reflects the show's nostalgic approach and the reality of growing up.
After six years, seven seasons, and all the epic highs and lows of high school football, the Riverdale series finale finally reveals what happens to Archie and his friends from the titular "town with pep." Packed with meta references to its Archie Comics roots, Riverdale has no problem exploring the at-times ridiculousness of its source material. That's exactly what makes the show fun, and it's also what's helped the Archie Comics publisher endure for nearly 85 years. In an inspired twist that feels in line with the rest of...

Note: This story contains spoilers from the “Riverdale” series finale.
After seven seasons of chaotic storytelling, time travel and musical episodes, the CW bid farewell to “Riverdale” with a touching and somber finale Wednesday night. Appropriately titled “Chapter One Hundred Thirty-Seven: Goodbye, Riverdale,” the installment featured a return to the present day before one last trip down a grief-stricken memory lane.
Before we get into the finale, the penultimate episode established that Angel Tabitha (Erinn Westbrook) announced she’d blended the multiverse into the 1950s timeline and restored the good memories of the Riverdale teens’ present day lives, leaving them in the 1950s to help change the world for the better. Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and Betty (Lili Reinhart) chose to keep both the good and the bad memories in secret.

Riverdale season 7 gave our characters a fresh slate in the 1950’s, embracing their “classic Archie Comics counterparts.” However, in the penultimate episode, they all finally got their good memories back from Angel Tabitha (Erinn Westbrook) with only Jughead (Cole Sprouse) and Betty (Lili Reinhart) choosing to remember both the good and bad.
With all of the absurd storylines that have taken place throughout the seasons, including time travel, it makes sense to say goodbye to Riverdale as the town that was once lost in time with one last epic journey. It’s time to say goodbye to Riverdale, which ends its impressive seven-season run, aptly, with a series finale entitled “Goodbye, Riverdale.” Impressive because, well, the adaptation of the Archie Comics crew was a weird kid from the get-go: A mix of Twin Peaks, snark, ’50s-style gangs and teen-sex soap with a side of musical elements and a young cast of relative unknowns. Mostly CW fare, for sure, but strange enough to run the risk of being lost in the mix. However, thanks to the instant youthful alchemy of Kj Apa, Cole Sprouse, Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, Madelaine Petsch, Vanessa Morgan, and Casey Cott, as well as the equally root-worthy adults played by Molly Ringwald, Mädchen Amick, the late Luke Perry, Skeet Ulrich, and Mark Consuelos, the show exploded and became a whole thing. It also helped that the project was cared for big time not just by series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa,...

The "Riverdale" cast have seen the jokes, but they're not laughing. In an Aug. 15 interview with Vulture, the cast spoke about the rampant meme-ification of "Riverdale," and why the internet just can't seem to take the show seriously. "I think it's important to acknowledge that our show is made fun of a lot," Lili Reinhart said, referencing the clips she said are often "taken out of context" on social media at the actors' expense. "It's really not been easy to feel that you're the butt of a joke."
The general discourse seems to focus on the show's melodramatic script (who could forget the "epic highs and lows of high school football"?) as well as the plot, which strays further from reality with each season. Reinhart, however, made it clear that's all intentional. "When the absurdity of our show became a talking point, it was difficult," Reinhart said. "It is, 'What the f*ck?...

The cast of Riverdale acknowledges that their show is often made fun of, but they embrace the absurdity and campiness. They believe that the outlandishness of their show is part of its appeal, and compare it to superhero movies and other fictional stories. The cast recognizes that the show has a cult following outside of North America, particularly in England and France, where it is appreciated for its unique sense of humor and fascination with classic Americana.

This news comes after Murray had previously departed from Riverdale, stepping into the limelight in the spinoff Katy Keene, which unfortunately was not greenlit for continued production.
Making her departure after the third season of Riverdale, Murray's character, Josie, took her musical talents to New York City in the now-defunct Katy Keene. While her presence in Riverdale was sporadic following her departure, fans of the show can look forward to Murray's resurgence in the seventeenth episode of season seven.
This episode, christened Chapter One Hundred Thirty-Four: A Different Kind of Cat, is scheduled to hit television screens on August 2. It teases a tantalizing plot in which Josie flaunts her latest cinematic venture, joined by fan-favorite characters Veronica (Camila Mendes...

An original member of the Riverdale cast is officially returning for the show's final season. The live-action Archie adaptation has seen seven seasons, multiple spin-offs, and more adventures than its cast ever could have expected. As the show continues to race toward its season finale, yet another member of the cast is set to make her return before it's all over.
Ashleigh Murray, who plays Josie McCoy, is an original cast member of Riverdale but left the series after season 3. She went on to star in the now-canceled spin-off Katy Keene, and she has only occasionally returned to the world of Riverdale since. A new press release by The CW, however, indicates that Murray will be making another appearance in season 7, episode 17. The episode — titled "Chapter One Hundred Thirty-Four: A Different Kind of Cat" and airing on August 2 — will see Josie showing off her new film, alongside Veronica (Camila Mendes...

Riverdale star Mädchen Amick recently shared that Archie and the gang will remain stuck in the 1950s for the remainder of the final season.
During an interview with Decider, the actor -- who stars as Betty Cooper's mother Alice in The CW drama series -- revealed that the entire seventh season takes place in the fifties. "No, we don’t get out of the 1950s. So I guess maybe that is a big spoiler," said Amick. "I will say you do experience the characters in different… dimensions, that you get to see a lot of closures that are outside of the 1950s. I can tease it that way. I think that’s saying enough."

Everyone's favorite Riverdale supervillain, the ruthless and chiseled Hiram Lodge -- portrayed by Mark Consuelos -- is back in this week's episode, "The Crucible." Last seen being exiled from the city by Archie and the gang in the Season 5 finale, Hiram was allegedly assassinated by a hitman that his daughter, Veronica, hired.
Riverdale rebooted its seventh season by unveiling a new 1955 timeline, which negated Hiram's death. After banishing Veronica to Riverdale, Hiram finally arrives on her doorstep to rekindle their father/daughter bond. But, in true Hiram fashion, he has an ulterior motive. Consuelos recently spoke to Cbr about his long-awaited return, how this Hiram stacks up against his future counterpart, the dynamic with Veronica, and the Riverdale fandom.
Cbr: How were you pitched Hiram's return? What did that phone call sound like?
Mark Consuelos: It sounded like Roberto [Aguirre-Sacasa] picking up the phone and saying, "Hey, would you be interested in…...

Riverdale's final season has pushed its characters from their adult states back to a teenage facsimile -- only this time, they're stuck in the 1950s.
For some, the '50s were the reset they'd been hoping to see from Riverdale, which can offer fresh, campy storytelling. For others, Riverdale's foray into the '50s has fallen hopelessly flat.
Riverdale Season 5 starts with a seven-year time jump that aged all the characters from high school seniors to aimless twenty-somethings. Divulging in more mature plots and relationships that the high school years hadn't seen before, the time jump allowed the characters to continue to grow.
Riverdale Season 6 moved into the supernatural, with the season culminating in Riverdale Season 6 Episode 22, "Chapter One Hundred and Seventeen: The Night Of The Comet," wherein the residents of Riverdale were faced with a new kind of peril as a comet hurdled towards them, threatening to wipe them...

Make room for Daddy, Riverdale! Even though his villainous-but-so-hot Hiram Lodge was offed in Season 6, original series cast member Mark Consuelos is swaggering back into the town with pep, thanks to this final season’s alternate timeline-jump back to 1955. In this current universe, not only is Hiram alive but he’s also the reigning star — along with wifey Hermione — of “America’s #1-rated television program, Oh Mija,” as nepo-baby Ronnie (Camila Mendes) revealed in the season opener. And in the June 28 episode, he’s bringing that square jaw and glorious head of slicked-back hair from Hollywood to the halls of Riverdale high. In TV Insider’s exclusive clip from the hour (directed by fellow Riverdale parent Mädchen Amick), “Chapter One Hundred and Thirty: The Crucible,” Veronica proudly introduces her famous dad to the gang, who have varying reactions to being in the presence of TV royalty. Archie (Kj Apa) goes for earnest admiration,...

Riverdale season 7's musical episode has been revealed in a set of new first-look images. The series, which is a reimagining of the iconic Archie Comics characters Archie (Kj Apa), Jughead (Cole Sprouse), Betty (Lili Reinhart), Veronica (Camila Mendes), and more, originally premiered on The CW in 2017. Over the years, the characters have been put through a variety of over-the-top storylines including many murders, a cult, supernatural powers, and - more recently - being transported back into the 1950s after a comet nearly destroys the titular town.

The CW’s Riverdale has been one wild ride. Our beloved Riverdalians — Archie Andrews (Kj Apa), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse), Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch), Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan), and newcomer Tabitha Tate (Erinn Westbrook) — have fought back against serial killers, crime bosses, and a demon from the alternate dimension of Rivervale to attempt to keep their town safe. Unfortunately, the series hasn’t always known how to handle its large ensemble of supporting characters, which has, at times, dramatically impacted the quality of the show. As a series regular for all but the first season of the drama, this is especially true for Kevin Keller (Casey Cott), who the series has never known what to do with, even well into the final season as the characters continue their “new” lives in the 1950s.

Riverdale Season 7 — its final season — has completely shaken things up. After Bailey’s Comet was directed toward the town, an extinction-level event occurred that forced Tabitha (Erinn Westbrook) to use her angelic abilities to send everyone back in time to the 1950s. As she searches for a way to survive the comet and disentangle the timelines, our characters have stepped into their new lives with no memory of what came before. Archie (Kj Apa), Betty (Lili Reinhart), Veronica (Camila Mendes), Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch), Toni (Vanessa Morgan), Kevin (Casey Cott), and Jughead (Cole Sprouse) are now teenagers once more, fighting against the repressive standards of the era in their own ways, while exploring romantic relationships, old and new, with a fair amount of twists. But, while the ‘50s gimmick was enjoyable at first and felt like a nice little nod to the comics, we’re now halfway through the final season...

The clock continues to count down on Riverdale as the seventh and final season serves up the fourth of its 11 episodes. In tonight’s outing, the overheated teens of the town with pep are once again causing a ruckus: Betty (Lili Reinhart) puts Kevin (Casey Cott) on warning for refusing her randy advances, Jughead (Cole Sprouse) gets into a pickle only Veronica (Camila Mendes) can get him out of, and Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) decides to pull a fast one on her family with some help from Archie (Kj Apa). Watch an exclusive sneak peek of that last one above. We’d say it’s all innocent fun, but you know these kids. They are not squeaky clean, never have been. Which is probably why we have spent the past seven seasons with them. Regardless of the era they are inhabiting, Archie and the gang know how to put the bad behavior in a good time.

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Season 7 Episodes 1-3 of Riverdale. The CW’s Riverdale has begun its final season with a major twist. Our beloved characters — Archie Andrews (Kj Apa), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse), Kevin Keller (Casey Cott), Cheryl Blossom (Madelaine Petsch), and Toni Topaz (Vanessa Morgan) — have been transported back to the year 1955, following an extinction-level event caused by Bailey’s Comet striking Riverdale after Percival Pickens (Chris O’Shea) set it on a collision course with the town right before the gang took him down. In 1955, where they are once again teenagers attending Riverdale High, the characters have also lost all of their memories of the present day. Their memories have been replaced with false memories of their new lives and a vastly different Riverdale, bringing back familiar faces, including those who were previously dead. So, without memories of their present-day relationships,...

[Warning: The below contains spoilers for Season 7 Episode 1 of Riverdale, “Chapter One Hundred Eighteen: Don’t Worry Darling.”] Happy days are here again. Or more like Happy Days. On jingle-jangle, that is. Because Riverdale returned tonight for its seventh and final season doing the time warp back to the ’50s. Thanks to the Bailey’s Comet catastrophe that was seemingly thwarted at the end of the supernatural-infused Season 6, our gang was transported to the era of James Dean’s death, Emmett Till’s trial, and hot-rodding teens, with only Jughead (Cole Sprouse) clued-in to the mix-up. The rest were busy being typical teens (again), with the head-turning arrival of transfer student and Hollywood kid Veronica (Camila Mendes), the growing civil-rights movement, and the storybook romance of high-school sweethearts Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) and … future gay icon Kevin Keller (Casey Cott)? Yeah, things are a little different this season. One thing that hasn’t changed, however, is that Betty remains...

The final season of live-action "Archie" comics TV series "Riverdale", begins March 29, 2023 on The CW:
"...picking up where last season ended, 'Jughead Jones' (Cole Sprouse) finds himself trapped in the 1950's. He has no idea how he got there, nor how to get back to the present.
"His friends are no help, as they are living seemingly authentic lives, similar to their classic 'Archie Comics' counterparts, unaware that they've ever been anywhere but the 1950's.
"'Archie Andrews' (Kj Apa) is the classic all-American teen, coming of age, getting into trouble, and learning life-lessons. 'Betty Cooper' (Lili Reinhart) is the girl next door, starting to question everything about her perfect life - including her controlling mother 'Alice' (Madchen Amick), 'Veronica Lodge' (Camila Mendes) is a Hollywood starlet who moved to 'Riverdale' under mysterious circumstances.
"'Cheryl Blossom' (Madelaine Petsch) is the 'Queen Bee' with a withering wit and a secret longing.
