When lockdown offered unobstructed time for discussion and analysis, Director Tomás Whitmore and Musician Kyle Harvey took a dive into their own relationships with social media and the ways in which constantly tweaked algorithms dictate our behaviour for maximum engagement. Already at work on a feature film together those conversations and a location access countdown turned their attention to the making of scintillating short Allie & I. However, what at first appears to be a story about the draw of a burgeoning new romance so intoxicating that nothing else matters, seductively reveals itself to be an allegory for the ever-present assault on our always-connected mental health. Across Allie & I’s 27 minute running time Whitmore delicately explores the addictive intricacies of our need for others’ validation and attention through stunning visuals and a hallucinatory aesthetics, heightened by alluring and powerful performances from co-writer Harvey and the mesmerising Kota Eberhardt. Charlotte Colbert’s atmospheric debut is anchored by Alice Krige as a fading screen icon whose trip to a Scottish retreat unearths sinister secrets
This viscerally atmospheric directorial feature debut from the Franco-British artist and film-maker Charlotte Colbert arrives with a stamp of approval from a maestro of Italian horror (“Dario Argento presents”) and a glowing endorsement from Mexican Oscar-winner Alfonso Cuarón, who says it “sits in the tradition of great psychological horror films”. A chilling tale of buried secrets and dreamy vengeance with a subversive feminist edge, this latterday fable marries the spiralling, self-reflexive narrative of Shirley Jackson’s novel The Haunting of Hill House with echoes of the off-kilter visual sensibility of the 1962 cult oddity Carnival of Souls. A thrillingly intense central performance by Alice Krige (who earned her genre spurs in the underrated 1981 screen adaptation of Peter Straub’s Ghost Story) is the lightning rod at the core of the film,...

Starring Alice Krige and Kota Eberhardt, She Will is centered around an older actress named Veronica (Krige) who travels to Scotland after major surgery with the help of her caregiver Desi (Eberhardt) in hopes of recuperating. But once she arrives, Veronica finds herself confronting past trauma as mysterious forces begin to overcome her, and Desi does their best to try to figure out just what exactly has a hold on Veronica and what this kind of power is truly capable of.

Alice Krige shines in this dark thriller, a tangy blend of folk horror and post-MeToo reckoning with a salty spike of satire
Director Charlotte Colbert’s first feature, co-written by her and Kitty Percy, brews up a tangy blend of folk horror and post-MeToo reckoning with a salty spike of satire targeting the sort of new age piffle certain entitled rich people swoon over. Protagonist Veronica Ghent is a haughty movie star of a certain age who has come to a boutique resort in Scotland to recover from a double mastectomy, accompanied by a young caregiver named Desi. Unfortunately, the venue is not offering the healing isolation and quiet that Veronica had hoped for. Instead, a guru/artist (Rupert Everett) is in residence with a gaggle of flaky followers and poor Veronica (“I don’t do groups!”) must share the facilities with the crowd as they explore “how art purifies...

Set in the Scottish highlands — at the site where women, men and children accused of witchcraft were burned at the stake 300 years ago — director Charlotte Colbert’s “She Will” reflects on this this historic massacre and enables her characters to reveal the truth of their own narratives.
Described as a gothic fairy tale, the feminist horror film follows an aging movie star named Veronica (Alice Krige) and her young nurse, Desi (Kota Eberhardt), as the two voyage to a healing retreat in rural Scotland after Veronica undergoes a double mastectomy. The surgery, paired with the legacy of violence remembered through the retreat’s omnipresent ash, forces Veronica to confront her past traumas as she builds a strong bond with Desi.

She did. That is, Charlotte Colbert did. She’s one of a few first-time directors who turned in great movies at Fantastic Fest in 2021. What seemed like it may be a grim and broody revenge horror fable becomes… something else, something emerging as more a story of empowerment, justice and, new beginnings. She Will wowed audience members I spoke to, and I took time to see it twice. Most importantly, it seemed to linger over the festival, coming up time and again in conversation. Veronica Ghent (Alice Krige) is a retired actress seeking solitude, and recovery from a radical mastectomy at a remote Scottish retreat. Upon arriving with her nurse Desi (Kota Eberhardt) in tow, she is horrified to discover others are present...

In Charlotte Colbert’s moody “She Will,” fallen movie idol Veronica Ghent (a riveting Alice Krige) struggles with the many masks — figurative and literal — she’s had to put on over the years. The latest is “about preservation,” icy Veronica explains in the film’s opening moments: A recent double mastectomy is the latest twist that has robbed her of yet another piece of her identity. As Colbert’s mystical first feature unfolds, Veronica is surprised by the new identities she can tap into, even if they prove less shocking to the film’s audience.
Intent on healing somewhere without prying eyes, Veronica alights for a solitary retreat in the middle of Scotland with only a young nurse in tow. Desi (Kota Eberhardt) isn’t at all impressed by her employer’s pedigree; she just wants to ensure her new charge takes care of herself, a much bigger ask than she could have possibly anticipated.

While initially thought to be vanity, Veronica Ghent’s (Alice Krige) cold cruelty towards her nurse Desi (Kota Eberhardt) and stubborn defiance about her recovery from a double mastectomy is ultimately revealed as survival. She’s an aging film star who’s worked, since 13, during an era ruled by egomaniacal and abusive men. She’s endured what it means to be a successful woman in the public eye, so she’s ready for when the tabloids write about her surgery and looks while questioning her star viability. Thus, recovery isn’t just about the physical side. It’s very much psychological too. Veronica will deal with the pain of prosthetic breasts despite Desi’s warnings to combat the media scrutiny. She’ll also book a remote Scottish retreat to try eluding the circus of celebrity.

As much as I love the blood and guts of gory horror, the laughs of comedy horror or the big-budgeted genre flicks, my favourite sub-genre of horror at the moment is the slow-burn films, full of atmosphere that usually have an ending worth waiting for. She Will looked like it was going to be one of those movies.
After a double mastectomy, Veronica heads to a healing retreat in rural Scotland. She goes with her young nurse, Desi, expecting to be alone for the retreat but instead ends up at a group event. Clearly not comfortable with other people being there she needs persuading to stay and Desi and she become closer. While there she learns to...

Out of the many interesting titles at Fantastic Fest 2021, She Will is absolutely a standout film. For me at least. It’s beautiful and haunting and affecting in subtle and meaningful ways, and it left me feeling both powerful and at peace. It’s one of those films that sneaks up and gets you in unexpected ways. The beautiful imagery and powerful story are brought to life by a fantastic cast, and everything comes together in a way that is just breathtaking.
Veronica Ghent (Alice Krige) is a well-known actress with an impressive career under her belt. Having recently undergone a double mastectomy, she travels to a remote retreat in Scotland with her nurse, Desi (Kota Eberhardt) to recover. When they arrive at the house, they find that instead of being the small women’s retreat that they had anticipated, it’s a larger gathering. The people in attendance are...

At over sixty years old now and screening over three hundred movies over the course of two weeks, the London Film Festival is a huge event on the film festival calendar. And it’s no surprise that female-directed horror movies will be ever present at this year’s London Film Festival. Not only has Prano Bailey-Bond’s Censor taken the festivals by storm this year but in the last five year’s or so, Karyn Kusama’s The Invitation, Julia Ducournau’s Raw, Anna Biller’s The Love Witch, Coralie Fargeat’s Revenge and many other great genre movies have been well received and made viewers take a closer look at female directors.
With that in mind, two debut features and a returning genre director will be at this year’s festival.

Exclusive: Horror legend Dario Argento (Suspiria) is joining Charlotte Colbert’s debut feature She Will as an executive producer.
Argento, who saw the film around the time of the Locarno Film Festival where he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from John Landis, said: “There was excitement about She Will and I want to support new voices, especially women’s voices. My films are always about women. Maybe because my first inspiration was my mother who was a famous photographer for actresses including Sophia Loren and Gina Lollobrigida.”
She Will stars Alice Krige (The Oa), Kota Eberhardt (X-Men: Dark Phoenix), Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange), and Rupert Everett (My Best Friend’s Wedding) with a score by Clint Mansell (Requiem For A Dream).

Wounds, both physical and psychological, become scars with time. But whether those scars are to be hidden or worn as badges of honor — evidence less of past trauma than of subsequent strength and healing — becomes the surprisingly resonant dilemma at the heart of Charlotte Colbert’s witty, weird horror-drama debut, which scooped the First Feature award in Locarno. “She Will” may not be particularly terrifying, except perhaps to abusers, rapists and anyone who’s ever used the phrase “it was a different time” to excuse the sins of their past without reckoning with them, but as a superbly crafted, thematically rich fable, it administers a potent dose of #MeToo vengeance, all while wearing its nasty sense of humor like a red-lipstick grin applied to a perfectly masklike face.

Charlotte Colbert has often explored physical and psychological trauma in her artwork.
It’s perhaps little surprise, then, that her feature debut “She Will” centers Veronica (Alice Krige), a former child star who has just had a double mastectomy and who is repressing mental wounds under a caustic British exterior.
Described as a psychological horror title, the film sees Veronica and her nurse Desi (Kota Eberhardt) head to a rural Scottish retreat in search of healing. Once there, Veronica starts having strange dreams in which she’s able to seek revenge against those who have wronged her.
Colbert shot the film outside Glasgow in a location which she says “had all sorts of mysticism,” and which provided the perfect, mist-carpeted backdrop for some witch-y goings on.
“Kota and one of our gaffers both saw a ghost. Even among the crew and the actors there were these visions, this cult-like aspect,...

With Academy Award-winning “Roma” and “Gravity” director Alfonso Cuarón already a fan, Charlotte Colbert’s feature debut “She Will” will no doubt similarly impress audiences when it premieres at the Locarno Film Festival this week.
A psychological horror, the film stars Alice Krige (“Star Trek: First Contact”) as Veronica, a double mastectomy patient seeking respite at a rural Scottish healing retreat who soon finds herself able to mete out revenge via her dreams.
“’She Will’ sits in the tradition of great psychological horror films,” Cuarón said of the work. “The images, symbolism and layers within the story slowly convey a metaphysical ecstasy which leaves one questioning long after the film is finished. Charlotte Colbert has crafted a powerful debut.”
Krige is joined on-screen by Kota Eberhardt (“X-Men: Dark Phoenix”), Malcolm McDowell (“Bombshell”) and Rupert Everett (“My Best Friend’s Wedding”).

Netflix released the first trailer for its upcoming sci-fi series “The I-Land” on Thursday, revealing that I-Land is actually a high stakes simulation put on as some kind of survival test for its participants.
The seven-part limited series, starring Natalie Martinez and Kate Bosworth, envisions a “Hunger Games”-esque scenario where 10 people wake up on a treacherous island with no memory of who they are or how they got there.
Netflix’s official description of the show says, “They soon discover this world is not as it seems. Faced with the I-Land’s extreme psychological and physical challenges, they must rise to their better selves — or die as their worst ones.”

Netflix dropped the teaser for “I-Land,” its upcoming “mind-bending limited series event” starring Natalie Martinez and Kate Bosworth on Tuesday, showing us what the I-Land is all about. And guys, this sci-fi show appears to be what would happen if you combined Fyre Festival, the plot of “Lost” and a slasher movie.
The video, which you can view above, starts off as pretty much a shot-for-shot remake of the infamous promo for the fraudulent “luxury music festival” founded by Billy McFarland and Ja Rule, with bikini-clad women prancing around the I-Land as title cards flash across the screen that read, “An immersive experience so exclusive, captivating and breathtaking… once you arrive, you’ll never leave.” And then all hell breaks loose.

So, yeah, for those of you out there that might not know, first-time director Simon Kindberg's Dark Phoenix starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Sophie Turner as Jean Grey hit theaters this past weekend and fell all but flat on its mutant face. Snagging a mere $33M domestically, the new movie now holds the title as the lowest opening weekend ever for the Fox/Marvel mutant franchise. And today we have word that things are only going to be getting worse for the film as it moves along. Finance experts say this phoenix will burn out with an estimated $100M-$120M loss.
This loss comes with the news that the movie ended up costing an estimated $350M+ to produce all said and done. And yes, that figure is said to include all those reshoots that pushed the film back from its original November 2018 release date to its final release last week.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is here and we're putting together all the various Marvel Comics references hidden throughout.
This article consists of lots of X-Men: Dark Phoenix spoilers. We have a spoiler free review here.
The X-Men Cinematic Universe has reached the finish line. After three initial core movies, four core movies from a rebooted sequel timeline, three Wolverine movies, two Deadpool movies, and a New Mutants fiasco that may or may not see the light of day, it’s time to pack it in. X-Men: Dark Phoenix is the last big showing of Fox’s genre-defining and, in all honesty, fascinating line of movies.
As always, being a superhero movie, there are a ton of comic book references throughout. Being an X-Men movie, that also means that throwaway heroes and villains are named after obscure comic book characters that they have very little to do with. Man,...

Stan Lee passed away in mid-November of last year, but his legacy lives on up on the big screen with every new Marvel movie released. Plus, let's not forget the man's killer cameos which have continued posthumously in films such as Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. But it looks like Lee will not have a cameo in director Simon Kinberg's upcoming X-men movie Dark Phoenix. That said, Kinberg did recently let us all know that there will be a tribute to Lee (and hopefully Jack Kirby as well) in the film.
Simon Kinberg specifically says this about Stan Lee.
"We don't have a cameo. I'd rather say that than then keep it mysterious, out of respect for Stan. We do have some tribute to him, and it's something that obviously we weren't thinking about when we were making the movie because he was still very much alive.

Simon Kinberg says he’s interested in sticking with the X-Men as they enter the McU.
Simon Kinberg has been involved with the Fox Marvel universe since first coming on board as a screenwriter for 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand. Since then, he’s been a writer and/or producer on every X-Men related film and TV show since, including high points like X-Men: Days of Future Past, Logan and Legion, as well as less well-regarded offerings like X-Men: Apocalypse.
Now he makes his directorial debut on the 12th and possibly last film in the Fox Marvel continuity, Dark Phoenix, a retelling of the classic story that was mishandled in X-Men: The Last Stand (a.k.a. X3). The film arrives following the completion of Disney’s purchase of Fox, which will allow Disney’s Marvel Studios to (presumably) reboot characters like the X-Men and the Fantastic Four...
