Season 2 of young adult romance “Heartstopper” has arrived on Netflix, accompanied by a soundtrack filled with pop and rock. Adapted from Alice Oseman’s graphic novels, the new season continues the cute, queer, colorful and cartoon-embellished story.
Now that they are boyfriends, Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) and Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) face the nuanced challenges of Nick’s decision to come out to his family and friends. Elle Argent (Yasmin Finney) and Tao Xu (William Gao) fight their own butterflies. Tara Jones (Corinna Brown) and Darcy Olsson (Kizzy Edgell) are back with their relationship road bumps — and let’s not forget our favorite bookworm, Isaac Henderson (Tobie Donovan).
The first episode kicks off on a solid note with Maggie Rogers’ “Shatter” and Fitz and the Tantrums’ “Out of My League.” The 1975’s “The Sound” uplifts episode three after a stressful round of testing for the Year 11 students. Taylor Swift’s...

For many music fans and insiders, critiquing the Grammy nominations is an annual pastime. And each year, the Academy seems to find new and interesting ways to wind up observers. When the 2021 nominations dropped last year, the main knock was a complete shutout for the Weeknd. This time around, the issues are a little more complex. There are some noteworthy omissions among the 2022 field — no women in any of the rock categories; no Spanish-language or West African artists in any of the majors — but more concerning than who was left out is who was included.

While Grammy nominations usually include many commercial picks, the awards pride themselves on being decided by music industry peers judging quality over popularity, even banning chart-related messages in FYC ads recently. So we often can expect a couple of critical darlings to get nominated across genres and sometimes even in the general field. Nominations this past year for Haim’s “Women In Music Pt. III” in Album of the Year and Phoebe Bridgers in Best New Artist are examples of how far acclaim can take you at the Grammys. Granted, we don’t know how this will hold up with no more nomination review committees giving a boost to lower-profile acts. Nonetheless, there are a lot of lauded artists who might surprise us this year.

Three years ago, Bea Kristi uploaded a low-fi love song called “Coffee” to YouTube. Little did most listeners know it was the first song she’d written, ever. “I came home from school one day, and I think my dad had noticed that I was getting depressed and kind of bored, so he bought me a secondhand guitar,” recalls the 20-year-old London singer-songwriter. She wrote “Coffee” on her new guitar without giving it much thought — “The tempo changes halfway through, it’s dumb as fuck,” she says now — and though...

Michael Winterbottom’s fictional love story set against footage of the British band Wolf Alice on tour hits a flat note
Those whose ears pricked up when they discovered Michael Winterbottom (24 Hour Party People, The Trip) had made a documentary about British rock band Wolf Alice may not be surprised to learn that despite the thrills of its live performance scenes, On the Road isn’t quite a concert film. Instead, the band are the pretence for a romance that unfolds against a backdrop of tour buses, hotel rooms and underground clubs. The lovers are two fictional characters (actors Leah Harvey and James McArdle), who fold into the real touring crew that travel with the band. It’s a compelling conceit and, indeed, the “docudrama” has long been Winterbottom’s directorial “project”, combining verité-style naturalism and improvisation to create an atmosphere of imagined reality. Still, the film’s prosaic title is a clue.

"That's life on the road for you." Lorton Entertainment has debuted an official trailer for a film titled On the Road, directed by Michael Winterbottom, not to be confused with the Jack Kerouac adaptation of On the Road from a few years back. This On the Road is a docu-drama that follows the British band Wolf Alice as they tour around the UK promoting their debut album, My Love Is Cool. Aside from documenting the ups and downs of life on the road, the story follows two people in particular: Estelle (played by Leah Harvey), an intern from the record label, and Joe (played by James McCardle), a member of the band's "imagined" crew. They start up an intimate friendship, and of course get caught up in the tumult of touring. The film is mostly unscripted, and seems to capture the raw beauty and randomness of life and love. Dive in.

There is no shortage of movies and documentaries about the life of a touring band, but few of them capture a band that’s just on the rise to fame. Michael Winterbottom aims to do just that with “On The Road,” a hybrid movie that follows increasingly popular U.K. band Wolf Alice as they promote My Love Is Cool, while mixing in a fictional story to tie it all together.

Back in 1996, Trainspotting (adapted from Irvine Welsh's 1993 cult novel) emerged as one of the great British films of the era, one that bristled with incendiary sense of style and danger. The daring dims a bit in T2: Trainspotting, though director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Steve Jobs) and doctor-turned-screenwriter John Hodge try their damnedest to force lightning to strike twice. The passing of two decades can take the piss out of characters, especially the four slum-dwelling Scotsman who caught that generation-defining moment of youth-in-revolt set to a pulsating Brit-pop score (Elastica,...

There are few filmmakers working today quite as innovative as Michael Winterbottom, who has an inclination to blur the line between reality and fiction in a way few manage. His latest endeavour, the documentary On the Road, following Wolf Alice as they embark on a UK tour, is no different, injecting fiction into this narrative, ensuring that the aforementioned indie outfit have a piece of cinema about them to cherish.
We begin at the very start of the tour, and we adopt the perspective of Estelle (Leah Harvey) – a vital inclusion as she’s new, meeting the band for the very first time, representing the viewer as we too adjust to this way of living. Laid back and easy to get along with, she has no problems fitting in, getting along well with Wolf Alice’s lead singer Ellie Roswell, and indulging in a romantic relationship with...

Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting features one of the great film soundtracks of the 1990s, mashing together Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Blur, and more into a kinetic chemical cocktail for disaffected youth. So Boyle’s 21-years-later follow-up, T2: Trainspotting, has some big musical shoes to fill with its own set of songs.

Polydor Records released the track listing for the film today, suggesting that Boyle isn’t looking to fix anything that wasn’t broken with the first film’s sonic choices. The first track listed is a remix of the original’s most iconic song, Iggy Pop’s “Lust For Life”, by way of The Prodigy. (The British electronic group teased the remix on its Instagram last month.) The rest of the album is a similar grab bag of the old and new, with recent bands—Wolf Alice, British DJ High Contrast—sitting alongside old standards like...

Danny Boyle’s 1996 film “Trainspotting” follows a group of heroin addicts in an economically depressed Edinburgh in the late 1980s. Based on Irvine Welsh’s novel by the same name, the film went on to become a critical and commercial hit around the globe. Besides parking controversy for its subject matter, the film also produced two acclaimed soundtracks that featured music from and inspired by the film, including Iggy Pop, Brian Eno, Primal Scream, Pulp, New Order and more.

As iconic as Renton, Sick Boy, Spud and Begbie — and arguably more so — was the music that powered Danny Boyle‘s zeitgeist capturing “Trainspotting.” It launched the mass commercialization of Iggy Pop‘s “Lust For Life,” and for a few years there it seems you couldn’t turn around without bumping into the song, while Underworld‘s “Born Slippy” went from the clubs and into the homes of kids everywhere.

Danny Boyle and Ewan McGregor roll back the years with today’s electrifying first trailer for Trainspotting 2, which not only sees the latter reprise the role of Scottish drug addict Mark Renton, but also features a modern spin on the iconic “Choose life” monologue.
“Choose life, choose Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and hope that someone, somewhere, cares.” Set against the pulsing house beats of Underworld’s “Born Slippy” and Wolf Alice’s “Silk,” this T2 teaser essentially rounds up the crew from the ’96 original before asking the question, just what on Earth have they been up to for the past 20 years?

The rock documentary/concert movie is almost as old as rock and roll itself, thanks to shining early examples of the genre like “The Last Waltz,” “Sympathy For The Devil” and “Woodstock.” But it’s a form that got old quite fast, and while you occasionally see a great one, a picture that twists the form on its head or shoots in an inventive new way (Andrew Dominik’s “One More Time With Feeling,” which Jess loved at Venice, for instance), there’s a certain formula that these things fall into, and they tend to only be for hardcore fans of the band.

The director adds a romantic relationship story to his documentary about alt-rockers Wolf Alice to create a difficult cinematic hybrid that’s his best film in years
Michael Winterbottom’s On the Road is his best film in years: romantic, erotic and musically euphoric. This is a sensuously laidback docu-social-realist gem which takes something very difficult and makes it look easy. Winterbottom and his camera crew went out on the road last year with the indie rock band Wolf Alice as they toured the UK and Ireland: a group whose name is taken from an Angela Carter short story. They are Ellie Rowsell (guitar, vocals), Joff Oddie (guitar), Joel Amey (drums) and Theo Ellis (bass). The various tour dates provide a convenient chapter-break structure, and are announced in block capitals on screen: Glasgow, Liverpool, etc.

We'd like to say it's a great time to be a Ghostbusters fan, but a lot of you would disagree. Even though those who loved the 1984 original have done nothing but dump hate on this new iteration of the classic franchise, that hasn't stopped Sony from moving forward with their marketing and merchandise campaign. Though believe it or not, some consumers have complained about a lack of toys in stores, with the studio not fulfilling the demand. That won't happen with the soundtrack, as it be readily available when it drops next month. Today, we finally have a clear picture of what exactly will be included.
Earlier today, we saw all four of the new Ghostbusters grace the cover of EW's latest issue. Now, we also get a new international poster that once again includes Chris Hemsworth as Kevin. This time, though, we also get to see Slimer making his triumphant big screen return.

Ghostbusters Day will unite the mighty Houses of the Old Ghostbusters and the New. We've got exact details of how that will happen plus some info on the soundtrack including who is covering Ray Parker Jr.’s classic Ghostbusters theme. You may recall us reporting on the original film coming back to theaters for two different special events? Well, there's more planned, and I'm sure this won't be the last of it. The Ghostbusters casts will combine their comedy powers on Jimmy Kimmel Live June 8, reports USA Today. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts will rep for the original cast while Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones will play for the new team. I'm sure the originals praising the new film on the show will get just as much vitriol as poor Aykroyd did recently. Mostly I'm just excited for Potts. "Seeing the original...
