Exclusive: Veteran producer Andrew Schneider has been tapped to lead Candle Entertainment, a division of Candle Studios, as EVP.

Schneider joins from Perfect Storm Entertainment, the production company of the Fast & Furious franchise’s Justin Lin, where he served as President. In his new role, Schneider will drive the expansion of the scripted film and TV business under Candle Entertainment, with a specific focus on the action, drama and thriller genres, and further tapping into a growing global co-production market. Companies operating under the division’s umbrella include Faraway Road Productions and the Latin-focused Exile Content Studio.

Fauda actor Idan Amedi is recovering after he was seriously injured while fighting in Gaza during reserve duty for the Israeli Defense Forces, according to Israeli media reports.

Amedi, who plays the role of Sagi Tzur on Netflix’s popular Israeli drama, joined Israel’s military campaign in Gaza as part of the Combat Engineering Corps immediately after the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks in southern Israel by Hamas that killed more than 1,100 Israelis, most of whom were civilians.

The Times of Israel newspaper reported an injured Amedi was brought to the Sheba Medical Center in Israel, where he underwent surgery and continues to receive treatment. Amedi’s life is not in danger, the Israeli singer and actor’s father told the Hebrew-language Walla news site.

Matan Meir, a crewmember on hit Netflix series “Fauda,” has been killed in action during the Israel-Hamas war, the show’s production team have confirmed.

The Times of Israel reported that Meir, along with four other Israeli soldiers, was killed after encountering a booby-trapped tunnel next to a mosque in Northern Gaza on Nov. 11. Meir was 38 years old.

“We are absolutely devastated to share that one of our very own Fauda family members, Matan Meir, was killed in action in Gaza,” the Fauda team posted on Instagram. “Matan was an integral part of the crew for all 4 seasons of Fauda. The entire cast and crew are completely heartbroken by this tragic loss. We would like to extend our condolences to Matan’s family and friends. May his soul rest in peace.”

“Fauda” star and co-creator Lior Raz also shared the message, adding: “I loved you, Matan. Thank you for everything.

A crew member from the Netflix drama Fauda has been killled in action in Gaza.

Matan Meir, a reservist in Israel’s 551st Brigade’s 697th Battalion and a crew member on the show, was acknowledged to have been “killed in action” on the show’s official X social media account. No details were provided.

“We are devastated to share that one of our Fauda family members, Matan Meir, was killed in action in Gaza,” the account posted. “Matan was an integral crew member. The cast and crew are heartbroken by this tragic loss. We extend our condolences to Matan’s family and friends. May his soul rest in peace.”

Fauda co-creator Avi Issacharoff confirmed Meir’s death to Deadline. He had posted on social media calling his former colleague as being “of blessed memory.”

The series tells the story of Doron, a commander in the Israeli Defense Forces Mista’arvim unit and his team.

The co-creator of the popular Netflix show Fauda, which depicts the conflicts and challenges of a fictional elite Israeli special forces unit, once had an idea for a storyline in which hundreds of Hamas terrorists infiltrate Israel and overwhelm a village. But, as Avi Issacharoff told a reporter, he decided not to go with it because “it sounds crazy” and wouldn’t be realistic.

If only that were true.

On Oct. 7, what was seen as “crazy” to some of world’s most creative screenwriters came to life in 22 kibbutzim and villages across southern Israel. Hamas terrorists infiltrated by air, sea, and land with one intent: To kill as many Jews as possible. By the time they were driven out, more than 1,400 people were dead — 1,200 of them civilians, and 30 of them Americans. Nearly 200 people, including babies, the elderly and the disabled were kidnapped and taken to Gaza, a war crime and a moral travesty.

As the conflict between Israel and Gaza continued to escalate, Israelis and their allies in Hollywood pleaded for support and said they were riven with anxiety for the well-being of friends and family.

“Some of the immediate reaction is disbelief, rage and anger. And I think I’ve settled in over the last 24 hours to just immense sadness,” said Casting Networks co-ceo Rafi Gordon, who was born and raised in Israel before moving to the United States as a teenager. “This feels like a 9/11 kind of moment, where I don’t know what normal is on the other side of this.”

“Tanaav,” the Indian adaptation of the global hit thriller series “Fauda,” will return for a second season. India’s Applause Entertainment, the content studio of India’s Aditya Birla Group, has secured format rights to Season 2 from Israel’s Yes Studios.

Produced by Applause Entertainment, “Tanaav” successfully premiered on SonyLIV in November 2022. The series is transposed from Israel and Palestine to the troubled area that is Kashmir and tells the story of a Special Covert Ops Unit.

Yes, the Israeli network behind the show, reportedly unveiled plans for a new season of the show at an event earlier this week. Ilan Sigal, CEO of Yes, appeared on stage with co-creator Avi Issacharoff to confirm the news, according to several Israeli media outlets.

Fauda, which means ‘chaos’ in Arabic, became a huge international hit for Netflix after the streamer licensed the first four seasons of the show. It follows Doron, a commander in Israel’s Mista’arvim counter-intelligence unit, and regularly touches on the Israel-Palestine conflict.

It garnered significant viewing in countries such as Lebanon and cut through in Europe, Asia and the U.S. There have been several remakes, including in India where SonyLIV ordered Tanaav, a Hindi remake.

Season four launched last year and was expected to be the final run.

Israeli drama “Fauda” is returning for a fifth season, Variety can confirm.

Ilan Sigal, CEO of Israeli network Yes, revealed the news earlier this week, according to the Jerusalem Post. The newspaper reported that Sigal appeared alongside the show’s co-creator, Avi Issacharoff, at Yes’s annual “Bar Series” event to share the news.

Netflix streams “Fauda” internationally. The fourth season of the show, which was also meant to be the last, released earlier this year.

According to Israeli publication Ynet, “Fauda” was picked up for a fifth season following protracted negotiations between the network and the creators. No details have been confirmed in terms of the season’s plot or when it might air.

Issacharoff, an Israeli journalist, developed the hit series alongside the show’s star Lior Raz almost 10 years ago. It first premiered in 2015, telling the story of Doron (played by Raz), a commander in the Israeli army.

Imad Mughniyeh was responsible for more American deaths in terrorist attacks before the devastating 9/11 bombings and was able to outsmart not only the CIA but also the Mossad. Making matters even more difficult was the fact that no one knew what he looked like. By 2001, he was on the FBI’s Most Wanted Terrorist list with a $15 million bounty for information leading to his arrest. The reward was later bumped up to $25 million. He ultimately appeared on the most wanted list in 42 countries before he died was assassinated at the age of 45 in a car bombing in 2008.

Showtime has released an official trailer for Ghosts of Beirut, a four-part spy drama that revisits the true-life manhunt for the deadly Hezbollah mastermind Imad Mughniyeh, who killed more Americans than any other terrorist before 9/11 as he eluded the CIA and Mossad for over two decades.

Beyond the evident confrontation (this is not a product about politics), this is a very entertaining series that has rhythm and intelligence and has known how to captivate the viewer with its complex plot, it elaborate characters and above all, its frenetic rhythm and elaborate construction in the parallel stories that have known how to reach an audience seeking big thrills.

This is a great success and excellent entertainment. The action scenes are very elaborate.

This season is just as good as the past ones: more of the same, more than one expects have made Fauda a phenomenon worth watching.

Fauda creators Lior Raz and Avi Issacharoff are attending the International Film Festival of India (Iffi) in Goa for the world premiere of the fourth season of the show. Since the first season started streaming on Netflix, the Israeli political thriller has built up a huge following in India, and also has a Hindi-language remake, produced by Applause Entertainment for local streamer SonyLiv.

“When Netflix first bought the show, we started to notice on social media that we were getting so many followers in India,” says Raz, speaking to Deadline on the sidelines of the festival. “We didn’t know what was happening, but we started to understand that we have a good relationship with the Indian audience.”

Mayer, the Co-Chairman and Co-CEO of Candle Media, which acquired Moonbug late last year, will give a keynote alongside Rechtman discussing the strategy and future plans of both Candle and Moonbug.

Sky Studios CEO Cécile Frot-Coutaz will also speak at the market, which takes place in early April in person after two years of cancellations.

Candle is rolling off three major deals. The next-gen company agreed last week to buy a minority stake in Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook Inc. and previously acquired Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine for an estimated $900 million, as well as Moonbug Entertainment, whose credits include Netflix’s “CoComelon,” for roughly $3 billion.

The deal for Tel Aviv, Israel-based Faraway — founded by and headed by Avi Issacharoff and Lior Raz (pictured above) — is the third for the still-unnamed company formed by Stagg and Mayer with the backing of private-equity company Blackstone. Exclusive: Netflix has opted not to renew geopolitical espionage thriller Hit & Run, co-created, executive produced and headlined by Fauda’s Lior Raz, for a second season. The news comes a month and a half after the release of Season 1, which ended with a major cliffhanger.

Hit & Run, which also starred Sanaa Lathan, Kaelen Ohm, Moran Rosenblatt and Gregg Henry, was well received by critics and viewers, with 70%+ ratings from both official reviews and audience feedback. But the sprawling drama, whose first season, impacted by the pandemic, filmed in New York and Israel, is expensive.

Because of the Covid-related industry shutdown, the nine-episode Season 1 took three years to produce. It debuted August 6 and broke into Nielsen’s Streaming Top 10 the following week at No. 8. It was the thriller’s only appearance on the overall weekly chart, which other Netflix originals like Outer Banks and Virgin River recently topped.

Lior Raz is ready to take Hollywood by storm. Over lunch at the Sunset Marquis, the Israeli actor-cum-co-creator of “Fauda,” the high-octane thriller focusing on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, is primed for what comes next. Most specifically he’s focused on his recently-launched Faraway Road Productions and nine-part crime drama “Hit and Run,” which bows Aug. 6 on Netflix.

The series, which follows a Tel Aviv-based tour guide whose wife is killed in a mysterious hit and run accident, was co-created with writer-journalist Avi Issacharoff, whom Raz met during their compulsory army duty and with whom Raz has not only developed and birthed “Fauda,” but also a steady parade of upcoming titles for both film and TV under their Faraway Road umbrella.
