Dancing with the Stars historically taps into the emotional aspect of its celebrities’ stories. Dances crafted around a particular life event can translate into viewer votes and a mirrorball trophy. However, not all dances are created to get the judge’s praise. Some routines are cathartic, while others celebrate joy. Here are the five most emotional dances in the series’ history.
Amy Purdy and Derek Hough (season 18)
Derek Hough crafted a routine honoring Amy Purdy’s extraordinary story of losing both her legs and gaining back her life. The couple danced to the song “Human” by Christina Perri. Dancing with the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba called this one of her favorite routines and featured it on her Facebook page.
Purdy’s legs were amputated 10 inches below the knee after she contracted bacterial meningitis at age 19. She was the first double amputee to appear in the series and made it...

Gleb Savchenko wanted to dance with Johnny Weir last season when the figure skater was cast in the 29th season of “Dancing with the Stars” last fall. That’s what the pro dancer told Mr. Warburton Magazine in a recent interview. But alas, it wasn’t meant to be. The conservative-leaning ABC reality competition series still has never had a same-sex couple compete for the Mirror Ball Trophy. And it’s long overdue.
SEERemember when Zendaya almost won ‘Dancing with the Stars’ and Val Chmerkovskiy told her she’d win an Oscar one day?
“I can’t wait for this moment!” Savchenko said about the possibility of breaking new ground on “DWTS.” “Last season when Johnny Weir got on the show I was like, ‘Johnny, you have to be my partner,’ but they ended up not doing it. They’ve done it before in Australia with Courtney Act and in...

But dancing can be romantic and even sexy, and come on, we’re all adults here. Scroll down to vote in our poll to let us know who you think is the hottest male celeb to date. And since hotness is subjective, of course, let us know in the comments who you think we grievously left off our list.

“Dancing with the Stars” has been doing “Disney Night” for a while now to appease ABC’s corporate overlords. They’ve been doing it for so long that we’ve now seen two dancers pay tribute to the same movie in the same dance style to the very same piece of music. James Van Der Beek closed the show with a “Pirates of the Caribbean” paso doble. Riker Lynch also did a “Pirates” paso on “Disney Night” in season 20 back in the spring of 2015. So whose was better? Watch Van Der Beek’s performance above and Lynch’s performance below. Then vote in our poll.
Judge Carrie Ann Inaba thought Van Der Beek’s performance was “insane” and told him, “This was your dance, truly.” Len Goodman thought he was “dramatic” and “strong,” though there were moments when it could have been sharper. Bruno Tonioli called it “grand spectacle,” a “powerful performance,...

A majority of “Dancing with the Stars” fans wanted the perpetually cursed Keo Motsepe to win Season 27 over four-time finalist Sharna Burgess, but now that she got her Mirrorball, you don’t think Motsepe is the most overdue pro. Nope, 38 percent of you think that title now belongs to Sasha Farber.
Farber, who was eliminated in ninth place this season with Mary Lou Retton, has been on six seasons, first appearing as a pro in Season 17. One of the most easygoing pros, he posted his best finish with Tonya Harding in third place on Season 26. His best chance at a win, however, was arguably with Simone Biles in Season 24, but the pair was shockingly axed in the semifinal. His wife, Emma Slater, ended up winning that season with Rashad Jennings, and you know the show would like to have three pro couples who’ve won Mirrorballs.
Motsepe grabbed 34 percent of the vote.

Witney Carson, Alan Bersten, Sharna Burgess and Keo Motsepe are the four pros in the “Dancing with the Stars” final. Three of them, Bersten, Burgess and Motsepe, are seeking their first win, but a victory for two of them, Burgess and Motsepe, would be very, very sweet after some tough, long and unlucky roads.
Burgess is by far the most overdue of any pro still awaiting their first Mirrorball trophy. A pro since Season 16 and the only female pro this season who hasn’t won, she has three runner-up placements — Nick Carter (Season 21), James Hinchcliffe (Season 23) and Josh Norman (Season 26) — and one third-place finish, with Noah Galloway in Season 20. She may have won in any other season with these people — and even Charlie White, who had to settle for fifth place in Season 18 while the show pimped his ice dancing partner Meryl Davis and Maksim Chmerkovskiy — but she had the...

Will Sharna Burgess finally be the bride on “Dancing with the Stars” this season? That’s what our readers are hoping: 52 percent want her to take home the Mirrorball trophy for the first time.
Burgess, who’s partnered with Bobby Bones, is one of five pros left who’ve never won before, but she has the deepest resume of them all. A pro since Season 16, she’s has three runner-up placements — Nick Carter (Season 21), James Hinchcliffe (Season 23) and Josh Norman (Season 26) — and one third-place finish, with Noah Galloway in Season 20. Bones is certainly no lock for the final — he has the second lowest scores of the cast, but his unpredictable personality should buy them a few more weeks, and hopefully he can improve in that time. As long as he doesn’t piss off Burgess with his unplanned moves anymore.

The past three seasons of “Dancing with the Stars” were won by pros who had never won a Mirrorball trophy before: Emma Slater (Season 24), Lindsay Arnold (Season 25) and Jenna Johnson (Season 26). Will that streak continue this season? With Gleb Savchenko’s and Artem Chigvintsev’s exits, there are just five winless pros left. Which of them do you want to see go all the way?
Sharna Burgess is by far the most overdue. “Dancing with the Stars” ended another arduous two-night event with Las Vegas Night on Tuesday, October 2. And though Paralympic skiier Danelle Umstead performed a quickstep to “Luck Be a Lady,” it turned out that lady luck wasn’t on her side. The visually impaired athlete’s journey ended as she became the second celeb eliminated from the competition. So why didn’t America support her as much as past “DWTS” contestants with disabilities like past winner Nyle Dimarco (season 22), who was deaf, or finalists Amy Purdy (season 18) and Noah Galloway (season 20), who were both amputees?
It’s possible that Umstead’s disability was an even greater challenge than anyone else has faced on the show. If you can’t hear the music you can still learn steps you can see. And amputees are able to dance with the aid of prosthetics. But blindness makes it especially difficult to learn the ins and outs of choreography,...

Danelle Umstead (‘Dancing with the Stars’) could be the first visually-impaired Mirror Ball champion
“Dancing with the Stars” is making history in season 27 with contestant Danelle Umstead, a Paralympian skiier who will be the show’s first visually-impaired contestant. Will she be able to win the Mirror Ball Trophy? Before the competition gets underway on September 24, let’s consider her pros and cons.

Pros
Dancing is such a demanding skill that any kind of physical limitation seems like it would be a deal-breaker, but not so. Double-amputees Amy Purdy (season 18) and Noah Galloway (season 20) were both finalists. Little person Terra Jole (season 23) made the top five. And deaf model Nyle Dimarco (season 22) actually won the Mirror Ball Trophy.
“DWTS” fans often rally around contestants with inspiring stories, whether they have overcome physical challenges like the above contestants, recovered from injuries like season 23 runner-up James Hinchcliffe, or committed acts of heroism like season 13 winner Jr Martinez...

The 27th season of “Dancing with the Stars” is upon us. It premieres on Monday night, September 24, with the cast set to be officially announced this Wednesday, September 12. And the results are in from our recent casting poll where you told us which of our suggested celebrities you’d like to see on the dance floor. These are the men our readers would most like to see on the show.
Actor Josh Peck topped the list with 23% of the vote. He rose to fame as one half of the Nickelodeon series “Drake and Josh” (2004-2007). Child stars from both Disney and Nickelodeon shows have a pretty good track record in the competition as evidenced most recently by Jordan Fisher, who appeared in “Liv and Maddie” and “Teen Beach Movie” on the Disney Channel before winning season 25 of “DWTS” less than a year ago.

ABC recently announced that season 27 of “Dancing with the Stars” will premiere on September 24, but we don’t know yet which celebrities will be selected to compete. Below is a list of male candidates I think “DWTS” should consider inviting to battle for the next Mirror Ball Trophy.
Jason Alexander
Before he was known for his iconic role as George Costanza on the classic series “Seinfeld” Jason Alexander was a Tony Award-winning actor, starring in several Broadway musicals including “Jerome Robbins’ Broadway,” for which he won Best Actor in a Musical. In addition, he has appeared in other TV shows and films like the 1997 version of “Cinderella” starring past “DWTS” alum Brandy, “Pretty Woman,” and the animated series “Duckman.” He’s 58, which would make him the oldest Mirror Ball champ in history. But despite his age, I think Jason’s dance and acting background could make him a serious contender...

If you could give the Mirrorball trophy to any of the remaining three pros on “Dancing with the Stars: Athletes,” it would definitely be Sharna Burgess. The two-time runner-up received 51 percent of the vote in a recent poll asking which pro you want to win.
That result is in line with the 64 percent of readers who earlier this season voted that Burgess deserved to win. None of the three have ever won before, but Burgess has the overdue factor. Currently in her 11th straight season, she is the veteran of the pro slate this season and is the only one of the final three who has made a final. In addition to her second-place finishes with Nick Carter (Season 21) and James Hinchcliffe (Season 23), she placed third with Noah Galloway in Season 20.
“I would love to see Sharna lift up that Mirrorball trophy! Honestly, she’s long overdue for a win.

With Chris Mazdzer and Witney Carson’s elimination on Monday’s “Dancing with the Stars: Athletes,” we are guaranteed a new pro winner. Sharna Burgess, Sasha Farber and Jenna Johnson have never taken home the Mirrorball — and only one of them, Burgess, has even been to a final. Earlier this season, 64 percent of our readers said the two-time runner-up deserves to finally nab a victory, but who do you actually want to win?
Currently in her 11th straight season, Burgess is the longest tenured pro of this season’s cast. She has a third-place finish with Noah Galloway (Season 20) and two second-place finishes with Nick Carter (Season 21) and James Hinchcliffe (Season 23), so you could say she’s “earned” a win. She and Josh Norman came out firing in Week 1, had a dip in Week 2, but recovered with a great contemporary routine — with one helluva lift — and a victory over Mazdzer...

Pro dancer Sharna Burgess deserves to Finally win ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ according to our readers
“Dancing with the Stars” fans probably already have celebrity contestants they’re rooting for in this all-athletes season, premiering April 30, but what about the professional dancers who are training and partnering with those celebs? Seven of the 10 pros competing this season have never won a Mirror Ball Trophy before, and when we asked our readers which of them is the most overdue for a victory it wasn’t even close. It’s time for Sharna Burgess to finally win. Scroll down to see our complete poll results at the bottom of this post.
According to almost two-thirds of respondents (64%), Burgess deserves a Mirror Ball championship at long last. She has competed for the last 10 seasons in a row and she has gotten close on multiple occasions, reaching the finals three times but never quite reaching the top of the podium. Bonner Bolton had a rough night on Monday's Dancing With the Stars, but his partner, Sharna Burgess, isn't going to let it get him down.
The pair were slammed by the judges for their Charleston -- set to "A Little Party Never Killed Nobody" by Fergie, Q-Tip & GoonRock -- which was especially challenging for Bolton, given his physical limitations following a near-paralyzing bull riding accident he suffered a little over a year ago.
For their efforts, Burgess and Bolton were awarded a score of 24 out of 40, putting them at the bottom of the pack alongside Mr. T and Charo -- who was eliminated at the end of Monday's episode.
