Today, AMC Networks announced that Dan Stevens will lead and executive-produce the third installment of the lauded horror anthology The Terror: Devil in Silver. Writing is led by executive producers Chris Cantwell (Halt and Catch Fire) and author Victor Lavalle, who wrote the celebrated novel on which the season is based.
Emmy-nominated director Karyn Kusama also executive produces and will direct the first two episodes.
Dan Stevens will play Pepper, a working-class moving man who, through a combination of bad luck and a bad temper, finds himself wrongfully committed to New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital – an institution filled with the people society would rather forget. There, he must contend with patients who work against him, doctors who harbor grim secrets, and perhaps even the very Devil himself.

Dan Stevens is ready to draw summoning circles in a psychiatric hospital for The Terror: Devil in Silver, the third chapter of AMC Networks‘ The Terror horror anthology. Chris Cantwell (Halt and Catch Fire) and author Victor Lavalle co-wrote The Terror: Devil in Silver, based on Lavalle’s novel. The story finds Stevens dabbling with forces beyond his control as pieces of his sanity break away.
Here’s a synopsis for Devil in Silver courtesy of Amazon:
New Hyde Hospital’s psychiatric ward has a new resident. It also has a very, very old one.
Pepper is a rambunctious big man, minor-league troublemaker, working-class hero (in his own mind), and, suddenly, the surprised inmate of a budget-strapped mental institution in Queens, New York. He’s not mentally ill, but that doesn’t seem to matter. He is accused of a crime he can’t quite square with his memory. In...

Fresh off the success of last weekend’s “Longlegs,” Neon announced Tuesday that it has acquired worldwide rights to the “Shelby Oaks,” which was written and directed by filmmaker and YouTube creator Chris Stuckmann. It marks Stuckmann’s feature directorial debut. The film is described as a documentary-found footage crossover. It will have its world premiere at Fantasia Festival on Saturday. Neon will release the film theatrically in the U.S. and handle international sales.
“Shelby Oaks” stars Camille Sullivan (“Hunter Hunter”), Brendan Sexton III (“Don’t Breathe 2”) and Sarah Durn (“Where the Crawdads Sing”). It follows a woman named Mia (Sullivan) as she frantically searches for her sister Riley (Durn), who ominously disappeared in the last tape of her investigative series, “Paranormal Paranoids.” Stuckmann’s film benefitted from a 2022 Kickstarter campaign, which raised $1.4 million for the film in under a month, making it the most-funded horror film in the service’s history.

The festival is set to debut Chuck Russell’s Witchboard remake, the Mike Flanagan-presented found footage Shelby Oaks, the latest from La Llorona filmmaker Jayro Bustamante, Steven Kostanski’s Frankie Freako, and more, but there’s a wealth of titles beyond the high profile titles worth seeking out.

Thea Hvistendahl’s atmospheric slow-burn “Handling the Undead” took top honors at this year’s Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival (Nifff), claiming the festival’s H.R. Giger “Narcisse” prize alongside the Silver Méliès for best fantastic European feature.
Toplined by “The Worst Person in the World” stars Renate Reinsve and Anders Danielsen Lie, director Thea Hvistendahl’s feature debut repurposes walking-dead tropes, reimagining the traditional zombie movie as a more ambient reflection on family grief.
“Full of frail, mortal feeling and overcast last-days imagery, ‘Handling the Undead’ lingers coolly in the bones longer than many zombie films that offer more immediate, grisly gratification,” Variety’s Guy Lodge wrote out of Sundance. “It’s a living-dead nightmare with a brain and a heart, and, most importantly and indelibly, a soul.”

Six months of horror releases down, six to go! With our 2024 Horror Preview, we’re looking ahead at some of the other horror movies we can’t wait to check out this year. For now, we’re only including movies that have a known release date, so films like the remakes/reboots of The Toxic Avenger and Witchboard are currently absent because they don’t have a release date yet, even though they’re likely to show up at some point in 2024. Here we go:
Longlegs – Theatrical, July 12
The marketing for Longlegs, a psychological horror thriller from director Osgood Perkins – who, yes, is the son of actor Anthony Perkins – has been so awesome and creepy, the actual film might struggle to live up to it. Still, it sounds very promising, with genre regular Maika Monroe taking on the role of an FBI agent who is tracking an elusive serial killer played by Nicolas Cage.

Film festivals provide the opportunity to experience a wealth of incredible films that few people have heard of yet. With trailers often spoiling way too much in an effort to sell the film to an apathetic audience, going in blind is a luxury few can afford. This is why I encourage you to check out your local film festival and support independent filmmaking. Every year around July I start getting antsy because I know that Fantasia Film Festival is just around the corner. In years past we’ve seen some absolutely stellar entries. Hell, last year’s Red Rooms is still one of my favorite films of the decade and it’s yet it’s still under many people’s radar.
That’s the great thing about film festivals in general but Fantasia has the ability to bring about this feeling more often than not. Because their selection is always absolutely killer.

Dan Stevens is a busy man. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire landed in theaters at the end of March, where Stevens played charming leading man Trapper, then anarchic horror Abigail arrived hot on its heels in April. Next up, August brings strange horror/sci-fi Cuckoo, which sees Stevens playing a deranged scientist. Between press tours, festivals, and new projects, he’s got a lot going on. And we get the sense he wouldn’t have it any other way.
Describing himself as an “experience hound,” Stevens is a man who thrives on challenges. He began his career in theater, made it big as tragic heartthrob Matthew Crawley in British drama Downton Abbey, and has genre-hopped ever since, from action-thriller The Guest, to playing Sir Lancelot in family fun Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. He sang and danced on stilts for Beauty and the Beast, played Charles Dickens...

London’s Raindance Film Festival is making a significant calendar shift for its 32nd edition, moving from its traditional fall slot to a new summer schedule.
Raindance kicks off with the U.K. premiere of Tilman Singer’s “Cuckoo,” a horror feature starring Hunter Schafer and Dan Stevens that previously played at Berlin and SXSW. Closing the festival is the European premiere of “National Anthem” by Luke Gilford, starring Charlie Plummer as a construction worker joining a community of queer rodeo performers. The film, which was at Toronto and SXSW, leads into the Pride in London weekend with a wild West End party.
This year, Germany is the festival’s guest of honor. The festival will showcase new German films, including “Cuckoo,” “Eternal You” and “What You See of Me.” A dedicated shorts program and industry panels, including a session with production designer Mona Cathleen Otterbach, will highlight Germany’s cinematic achievements.

Neon has promoted Elissa Federoff from president of distribution to chief distribution officer and Ryan Friscia from EVP, finance & business development to chief financial officer.
Federoff has been with the company since its inception in January 2017 and will continue to oversee the company’s release strategy.
The executive has steered Neon to one of its most successful periods at the box office since inception, with Sydney Sweeney starrer Immaculate earning more than $16m, 2023 Palme d’Or winner Anatomy Of A Fall taking more than $5m to become the highest-grossing specialised foreign-language release post-Covid, and Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days on more than $3.7m.

It’s hardly unusual for TV journalists to spend time at the movies, but never has a weekend of festival programming seemed so tailor-made for us. The Chicago Critics Film Festival kicked off its 11th edition with a lineup that was fairly bursting with small-screen talent and resonance.
Opening night on May 3 saw the Chicago premiere of Sing Sing, which stars Colman Domingo, who had already reinvigorated The Walking Dead franchise before winning an Emmy for his role in Euphoria. Elsewhere, his co-star Hunter Schafer, one of Euphoria’s many breakouts, gave a gorgeously wounded performance in Cuckoo, a new horror-thriller from Tilman Singer.

Whatever one thinks of the highly controversial TV series Euphoria, there’s one thing no one can deny. No show of this era has been a better launching point for the careers of young movie stars. Zendaya is currently enjoying huge success on the big screen, thanks to Dune: Part Two and Challengers, while Sydney Sweeney is just on the other side of a rare rom-com box office success with Anyone But You and has also just produced and starred in the excellent horror flick Immaculate. Jacob Elordi received a bit of praise for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in the Sofia Coppola film Priscilla last year and will next play Frankenstein’s Monster for Guillermo del Toro.
Next up is Hunter Schafer, who is set to splatter the screen in blood with the very creepy-looking horror film Cuckoo. This isn’t her first film role, of course. The young...

Two characters, having barely survived a traumatic and violent ordeal at a hospital, try to leave, only to find the doors locked. But wait, it is one of those situations where one door is locked but the other one works just fine. They exit. Given the events that occurred before this, the tiny moment is both scary, specific, and cathartically funny, all at the same time. It is a bit of a gag, and a bit of a, well, bit. The unexpected intentionality of it (which admittedly is a particular pet-peeve of mine) is representative of the movie in miniature. The second feature from aestheticist and analog enthusiast Tilman Singer is a commitment into sensory overload, even in its quiet moments. Tactile and gorgeous,...

Just as audiences may have finally finished cleaning off the blood splatter from Ready or Not and the two most recent Scream films, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have returned to the big screen with Abigail. And staying true to what horror fans have come to expect from their previous efforts, Abigail is a high-octane, high-energy horror film that pulls no punches or fangs, making for another scary good time at the cinema.

While the Big Easy was still shaking off a slight springtime chill, my horror-loving heart was heating up as I rode the escalator to the third floor of the Canal Place mall: home of the sprawling food court, the terrific Prytania Theaters, and, for this weekend, the official headquarters of the “summer camp for genre fans,” the 2024 Overlook Film Festival!
Taking that second escalator up to the third floor is akin to ascending to horror nirvana, as I was immediately immersed in all manner of the macabre: the Vinegar Syndrome table of essential physical media waited on my right, the Super Yaki merch table of eerie apparel lied straight ahead, and must-see screenings lurk around every corner. After meeting up with fellow Daily Dead team members Jonathan and Christy, we headed to our first screening of the fest: I Don’t Understand You. In Greek mythology, cuckoo birds were sacred creatures to the goddess Hera. Elsewhere, like in Europe and the United States, the cuckoo is often associated with the clock that imitates its birdsong, Coca Puffs, or as the name of origin for the words "cuck" and "cuckoldry," as the bird leaves its eggs in other nests and tricks other birds into raising its young (get it?). For Tilman Singer's new horror film, "Cuckoo" is a bonkers, bloody rollercoaster of terrorizing sound design and dynamic performances that feels like it could fall off the rails at any moment.
Fortunately, "Cuckoo" commits to its strange, sinister logic with fearlessness and refuses to play into formulaic movie logic while dangling familiar tropes like a hunter baiting prey, making this screeching ride of repulsive body horror wanting another go around. Admittedly, it might be hard to make sense of how some of the first-act...

Picture the scene — an idyllic rural resort in the German Alps, with trees as far as the eye can see and a bespectacled Dan Stevens in tow. Sounds like the stuff of dreams, right? Well, if the first trailer for Hunter Schafer-starring horror Cuckoo – from Luz director Tilman Singer – is anything to go by, it's more like the stuff of nightmares. Check it out below:
Anybody else's heart pounding after that? Sheesh! Right from the all-too-Shining opening shots of a car wending its way through the countryside, it's abundantly clear that this is no cosy travelogue about sweet birds and European natural wonder. And the shrieks among the trees, ominous shots of taxidermy bears, and Dan Stevens' accented, low-key menacing "How would you like to come work for me at the resort?" here certainly don't suggest a five-star TripAdvisor review is on its way any time soon. Hunter Schafer learns that not all European getaways are particularly relaxing in the first trailer for horror flick Cuckoo.
Neon releases Tilman Singer’s feature in theaters Aug. 9. Cuckoo stars Schafer as Gretchen, a teen who gets more than she bargained for after accepting a job from Herr König (Dan Stevens) at a resort in the German Alps. Rounding out the cast are Jessica Henwick, Jan Bluthardt, Marton Csokas, Greta Fernández and Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey.
“How would you like to come work for me at the resort?” Stevens asks in the trailer. Later, Schafer wants to know, “Why did you bring us here?”
Singer (Luz) wrote and directed the movie that premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival in February and also screened at SXSW. Thor Bradwell, Markus Halberschmidt, Ken Kao, Ben Rimmer, Josh Rosenbaum and Maria Tsigka serve as producers.

Yes, keep it coming, Neon. The more we see of Tilman Singer's new film, Cuckoo, the higher our anticipation rises. The official trailer arrived earlier today and if you're not excited to see this, who are you even? That shot of Hunter Schafer looking down at her own shadow as she rides her back and the outstretched hand of that strange woman appears? Chef's kiss! Aw man. In most teen dramas, when a moody 17-year-old is forced to relocate because of divorce or new step-parents, their only real tasks are to slam bedroom doors and worry about building their new social life from scratch. But in the first trailer for Tilman Singer’s Cuckoo, the relocation of Hunter Schafer’s Gretchen is marked by a more sinister mission: outrunning the terrifying beings haunting and hunting her.

Neon’s official trailer for Cuckoo features Hunter Schafer (Euphoria) as a teenager whose job at a resort is…possibly literally…pure hell. Dan Stevens (Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire) continues to dive into weird characters as the man who runs the resort.

2024 is shaping up to be a good year for horror, and that's exciting. Horror remains one of the most dependable genres — if there's a new horror movie, audiences will likely turn out to see it. Hell, these days a horror movie doesn't even need to have good reviews to bolster its box office returns: people just want to go see a scary movie. Which brings us to "Cuckoo," a new horror film written and directed by Tilman Singer, who helmed the very strange 2018 German horror pic "Luz."
"Cuckoo" features "Euphoria" star Hunter Schafer as Gretchen, a teen sent to live with her father in the German Alps. Sounds fun and picturesque, right? Wrong! There are scary things afoot. The film premiered at the Berlin film festival Berlinale this year, where it garnered mixed-to-positive reviews, many of which point out how weird the movie is. It currently sits at 76% on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Euphoria” breakout Hunter Schafer is playing yet another teen trying to outrun her familial drama, except this time, it’s a surreal matter of life or death. Schafer leads “Cuckoo,” written and directed by “Luz” filmmaker Tilman Singer.
Six years after Singer’s 2018 feature debut, “Cuckoo” centers on 17-year-old Gretchen (Schafer) who is forced to leave her American home to live with her father (Márton Csókás) in a resort in the German Alps with his new wife (Jessica Henwick) and family. Yet it’s her father’s boss Mr. Konig (Dan Stevens) and his obsession with Gretchen’s mute half-sister Alma (Mila Lieu) that unlocks a larger, more sinister presence at the resort. Gretchen becomes haunted by strange noises and bloody visions until she discovers a shocking secret that also concerns her own family. Jan Bluthardt and Greta Fernandez also star in the horror film.

Hunter Schafer was among one of the standout performers in HBO’s hit series Euphoria. Among other rising actresses like Zendaya and Sydney Sweeney, she managed to hold her own in her acting debut with her role as Jules Vaughn. The show mirrored her own experiences as a trans woman and fans were impressed with the ease with which she essayed her role.

Another standout from the series was Angus Cloud who sadly passed away last year. Schafer recently reflected on Angus’ contribution to the show and the type of person he was in real life. Schafer had nothing but kind words to say about the late actor who left a special mark on the entire cast of Euphoria.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire star Dan Stevens truly has a spring in his step right now.
Over the next five months, the English actor has three unique genre films hitting theaters, beginning with Friday’s Godzilla x Kong, which marks his long-awaited reunion with his The Guest director, Adam Wingard. A decade ago, Wingard cast Stevens as David Collins, an unhinged super soldier who ultimately terrorizes the family of a fallen friend and fellow soldier, and the project served as the London native’s breakout feature film role. The Guest continues to increase its cult status with each passing year, and Stevens and Wingard, as well as writer Simon Barrett, have fielded countless requests for a sequel ever since.

The company’s recent foray into production have included Brandon Cronenberg’s “Infinity Pool,” Bishal Dutta’s “It Lives Inside,” Theda Hammel’s “Stress Positions,” Jazmin Jones’s “Seeking Mavis Beacon” and Tilman Singer’s “Cuckoo.” This new in-house focus also includes upcoming projects from Joshua Oppenheimer, Boots Riley and David Robert Mitchell.
