After three seasons on Max, the streamer has opted not to renew The Sex Lives of College Girls for a fourth season.
Following news of the show’s cancellation, co-creators Justin Noble and Mindy Kaling have taken to social media to honor the series.
Noble shared an Instagram post in which he said there are “discussions with some new potential homes for the show,” adding, “But regardless of what happens, I’m proud of this show and the work that so many incredibly talented people put into it.”
The showrunner said this was “not the outcome that I saw coming,” noting the series was “listed as the most watched or second most watched scripted show on the entire platform, for about 70 straight days.”
“I can’t help but mention that it feels like there are fewer and fewer comedy series every month — and we are living in an era where we need that comedy badly,...

The Sex Lives of College Girls is shuttering its school doors at Max after three seasons on the streamer. Max will not be producing additional episodes of the coming of age drama, co-created and produced by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble.
Despite the show’s cancellation on Max, announced Tuesday, Warner Bros. Television is looking to keep the show alive on neighboring streamers. Kaling, for example, has a working relationship with Netflix. She co-created the Kate Hudson-starring series Running Point, released on Netflix last month, and the popular drama Never Have I Ever.

On Tuesday afternoon, Max left many viewers stunned when it canceled The Sex Lives of College Girls.
The comedy series was rare in that it was genuinely funny, with powerhouse performances from its leads, Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur, Reneé Rapp, and Alyah Chanelle Scott.
Simply put, the series cut through a world with a lot of TV, which rarely happens.
(Tina Thorpe/Max )
The cancellation occurred mere months after the conclusion of the third season, leaving everyone wondering where the series could go next.
Instead of the cliffhangers we were accustomed to with the first two seasons, most storylines were closed up reasonably well, hinting that creatives were unsure about the show’s prospects.
Teen-focused series on Max don’t tend to stand the test of time, as evidenced by the Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars reboots being scrapped after their sophomore seasons.

The Sex Lives of College Girls has been canceled after three seasons at Max, but production company Warner Bros. Television is exploring finding a new home for the series, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
The Mindy Kaling co-created coming-of-age comedy’s most recent season wrapped in January and saw the departure of original castmember Reneé Rapp, who left two episodes into the latest run.
Sex Lives ran a mostly cliffhanger-free third-season finale leading some viewers to wonder if this was the end of the show, even though the characters were only midway through their sophomore year and the series was pretty consistently near the top of Max’s top 10 list of most-viewed shows (though that didn’t translate to making Nielsen’s wider top 10 streaming charts).
Co-showrunner Justin Noble, who oversaw the show with Kaling, insisted at the time that the episode wasn’t meant to wrap up the series.

Gracie Lawrence’s Kacey joined Max’s The Sex Lives of College Girls in the third episode of the show’s third season as a transfer student assigned to a four-person suite with Bela (Amrit Kaur), Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) and Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott) after Reneé Rapp’s Leighton transferred to MIT.
Initially in a long-term relationship with Calvin (Tyler Barnhardt), with the pair ostensibly saving themselves for marriage, promise rings and all, Kacey quickly discovers that Calvin is cheating on her. Editor's Note: Spoilers ahead for Season 3 of 'The Sex Lives of College Girls'The Sex Lives of College Girls Season 3 finale wasn’t intended to be the series finale, but if you watched the final episode thinking the show had just come to an end, you wouldn’t be the only one. As series co-creator Justin Noble recently told TV Line, the episode wasn’t written with the show’s potential cancellation in mind, but more so with the intention of avoiding cliffhangers by giving the girls a positive, joyful end to the season. It's true Bela (Amrit Kaur), Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott), and Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) went through a lot this season, dealing with breakups, academic hurdles, and mental health struggles, so it’s nice to see them end the season on a high note.

If Sex Lives of College Girls fans are worried that that season three finale, which ended with the series’ main characters looking happy as they relaxed together in their dorm suite, was meant to be a series finale or a signal that their beloved show could end part-way through sophomore year, co-showrunner Justin Noble insists that wasn’t the intention.
“No one told us to, like, wrap up the show or anything like that,” he said, explaining that his approach to ending the season was more about his personal preference than any sort of dictate.
“I think just me as a creator, I’m losing interest in cliffhangers,” Noble told The Hollywood Reporter about the mostly cliffhanger-free finale. “I think it’s longer than ever between seasons for logistical reasons within the industry, and frankly, I don’t think audiences like cliffhangers the way that they used to. Editor's Note: The following contains major spoilers for 'The Sex Lives of College Girls' Season 3.The third outing of Max’s The Sex Lives of College Girls has reached its conclusion. Chronicling the first half of the girls’ sophomore year, Season 3 is full of drama, self-discoveries, and well, sex. This time around, the core cast faced a shake-up with the exit of Reneé Rapp’s Leighton, leaving Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet), Bela (Amrit Kaur), and Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott) to explore life in her absence while adding new roommate Kacey (Gracie Lawrence) to the mix. The season is a mixed bag of elements, but the charisma of the girls never makes their stories a burden to watch.

Spoiler Alert: This post spoils the finale of The Sex Lives of College Girls Season 3.
Another semester at Essex College has come to an end in the finale of Season 3 of The Sex Lives of College Girls.
Showruner Justin Noble directed the Season 3 finale, which ends on a very different note compared to the Season 2 finale which had some tension brewing between Pauline Chalamet’s Kimberly and Alyah Chanelle Scott’s Whitney as well as some uncertainty for Amrit Kaur’s Bela.
“Very intentionally, this is a finale that chooses joy. These girls have come into their sophomore year of school. They’ve been challenged severely, and it felt only right that we should show the wins for all these young women who succeed in all these different ways,” Noble told Deadline. “The title for this episode was in the works for a while, it’s called ‘Essex Strong,’ and...

Ask the average pop culture fan about Mindy Kaling and they’ll likely respond about her career as a writer, actor, and general celebrity. They’ll probably credit her, to varying degrees, for a range of projects she’s been on or behind the scenes of since “The Office,” but maybe not the specifics of her work as producer.
Kaling became a producer on “The Office,” but in 2012 founded Kaling International at the same time that she launched her own sitcom, “The Mindy Project.” Since then, the company has produced original titles across film and television, from the aforementioned single-cam sitcom to recent hits like “The Sex Lives of College Girls,” which concluded its third season on Max. To celebrate another season, we decided to revisit every Kaling International title as a primer or refresher for those interested in her work.

Another semester has come to an end for our favorite college girls with The Sex Lives of College Girls season 3 finale hitting Max on Jan. 23. It's been a challenging season for Kimberly, Whitney, and Bela as they said goodbye to their friend and roommate Leighton, who went off to Boston, and said hello to their much different new roommate Kacey.
Going into the season finale, the girls had each been tested in their own way. Kimberly continued to feel overwhelmed by the prospect of her future goals and how her current actions could have an impact. Whitney struggled with her status as a college athlete and her mental health. Kacey grappled with the loss of her virginity, and Bela pushed against conventions to accept her sexuality.
But after watching The Sex Lives of College Girls season 3 finale, fans might be wondering whether the Max original series will be back for season 4. No spoilers yet,...

Note: The following story contains spoilers from “The Sex Lives of College Girls” Season 3, Episode 10.
“The Sex Lives of College” wrapped up Season 3 with an unexpected reveal: A coming out story for Amrit Kaur’s Bela.
Despite only dating guys throughout her time at Essex, Bela’s romantic interest is piqued by Hailey (Melinda Belle Adams), the host of the storytelling show she joined in last week’s episode. After kissing Hailey at a party, Bela officially comes out as bisexual to her roommates — a twist showrunner Justin Noble said hasn’t been in the works since Season 1, but one that doesn’t surprise him.
“Bela has always been this character who’s down to try anything, do anything,” Noble told TheWrap, adding that many sheltered teens like herself have “massive discovery journeys” in college. “I wanted Bella to be a counterbalance to the story we did with Leighton (Reneé Rapp...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for the Season 3 finale of “The Sex Lives of College Girls.”
For once, the sex lives of the college girls in “The Sex Lives of College Girls” are going all right.
Bela (Amrit Kaur) has the most surprising evolution of the quartet: In the finale, after three seasons of maximally obsessing over sex with men, she spontaneously kisses her new friend Haley (Belle Adams), then gleefully comes out as bisexual to all of her friends the next day. There’s a slight hiccup when her mom (Kavi Ramachandran Ladnier) shows up to a comedy show at which she planned to publicly announce her queerness. But later, she holds hands with Haley in front of her mom, who reacts with nothing but love and acceptance.
After Essex police officers break up a peaceful protest about an offensive speaker appearing on campus, Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) leads...

Though “Sex Lives of College Girls” fans know Gracie Lawrence as Kacey, a theater nerd and the new fourth roommate in Season 3, things could have been much different.
“She was a finalist to play Kimberly in Season 1,” co-creator and executive producer Justin Noble says, adding that Lawrence was in the final three under consideration for the role, which eventually went to Pauline Chalamet. But two seasons later, as the minds behind “Sex Lives of College Girls” conceptualized Kacey for the small screen, Lawrence’s audition once again stood out.
“She’s so funny and charming,” Noble says, comparing Lawrence’s take on Kacey to a “cute little Reese Witherspoon character” who rounds out the rest of the cast.
Lawrence, a singer-songwriter and actor also known for her band, Lawrence, which she co-leads with her brother Clyde, had previous credits on Showtime’s series “Billions” and the Netflix film “Moxie.”

Season 3 of The Sex Lives of College Girls has seen some big changes, from Reneé Rapp's departure to the introduction of two new characters in Kacey (Gracie Lawrence) and Taylor (Mia Rodgers). But as a result of these changes, Whitney's (Alyah Chanelle Scott) character has slipped through the cracks, and with just two episodes remaining, the show still has no idea what to do with her character. Both Bela (Amrit Kaur) and Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) have more clearly defined arcs in Season 3, but Whitney's is all over the place, introducing new conflicts that are either quickly resolved or abandoned completely. In Season 3, the time The Sex Lives of College Girls spends fleshing out its new characters comes at the expense of Whitney’s development and speaks to a larger problem with the series’ lack of cohesion and connectivity to the previous seasons.

In “Young Werther,” director Jose Avelino Gilles Corbet Lourenco has a tough task. How to distill the eighteenth-century Goethe classic and transpose it into the modern times where the rules of morality and relationships have undergone dramatic shifts? Would the same hero remain a fitting protagonist placed in a much different temporal context? Would his anxieties and desires ring with equal fervor and intensity?
The director must have foreseen a direct, too-faithful adaptation of the text would only spawn a slew of difficulties. What’s needed instead is levity and insouciance galore to pad the repurposing into the modern times. The bleakness of the text is reframed through a lens that has a mix of whimsy and self-awareness. The hero of the film can see to some extent the degree of his folly in his romantic pursuit. He is bullish and seems to know the task of his chasing would always be tricky.

Season 3 of The Sex Lives of College Girls has already seen the departure of one main character and the introduction of two new ones. In just the second episode of the season, the show said an emotional goodbye to Leighton (Renée Rapp) when she decided to transfer to MIT. Essex wasted no time in assigning a new roommate to Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott), Bela (Amrit Kaur), and Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet). In the very next episode, they met Kacey (Gracie Lawrence), who has already had multiple storylines of her own and even some character development as well.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Sex Lives of College Girls, Season 3, Episode 5, “Parents Weekend 2.”] The Sex Lives of College Girls hosted its second parents weekend at Essex, bringing the families of Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet), Bela (Amrit Kaur), and Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott) together again with some fresh faces in the mix. While Whitney’s mom Carol (Nicole Sullivan) was able to make it, her dad was missing this time around, whereas LeRoy McClain entered the scene as Whitney’s dad with her mom bowing out of this parents’ weekend dinner. Bela’s parents were present as they were for the last gathering, and newbies Kacey (Gracie Lawrence) and Taylor (Mia Rodgers) tagged along with Kacey’s mom (played by guest star Missi Pyle). The night was filled with obstacles, though, as Bela lied to Arvind (Nabeel Muscatwalla) about her parents being in town, making for an awkward run-in at the restaurant. Meanwhile, Whitney discovered that her dad ...

Just two episodes into its third season, The Sex Lives of College Girls said goodbye to Reneé Rapp's Leighton Murray. Leighton has been one of the four roommates and main characters since the show's pilot, along with Whitney Chase (Alyah Chanelle Scott), Bela Malhotra (Amrit Kaur), and Kimberly Finkle (Pauline Chalamet). Although Leighton's (and Rapp's) send-off was beautiful and fitting for her character, it was sad to see her go. The Sex Lives of College Girls, for its part, has wasted no time in trying to move forward from this character exit, particularly with the introduction of two new characters.

Arguably one of the most insufferable protagonists in literature is the title figure in Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s “The Sorrows of Young Werther” — a martyr to unrequited love who ultimately commits suicide. The author soon distanced himself from this early work, despite the fame it brought him. No doubt that was largely because the fuel it provided for the subsequent Romantic movement (which he disdained) proved so flammable; there arose real-life cases of copycat self-annihilation amongst readers who fancied themselves as theatrically bereft as his hero.
Few beyond academics now are likely to recall the huge cultural impact the book had a quarter-millennium ago. Still, you needn’t be savvy to that historical footnote to enjoy the new “Young Werther” — though it does help. “Based on the smash hit 1774 novel of tragic romance,” as opening onscreen text announces, Jose Avelino Gilles Corbett Lourenco’s debut feature is a confident, clever update.

Young Werther Review: Modern Rom-Coms Should Be More Like This Charming 18th-Century Book Adaptation

It's tempting to immediately judge Young Werther by its first 10-15 minutes, but if you hold out a little longer, the true movie will reveal itself. Based on the 1774 novel The Sorrows of Young Werther by Johann Wolfgang Goethe, the rougher edges of the book are sanded down and given a 21st-century sheen through the adaptation written and directed by José Lourenço. Though it was no easy task, Lourenço takes a rather dark and nihilistic story from Goethe and makes it plucky, bright, and an encouraging addition to the rom-com genre.

"Werther!" Read the name, remember it, learn to love it. Or hate it? Nah, we're guessing you won't exactly detest the eponymous antihero by the end of Young Werther, Lionsgate's new rom-com offering. For starters, it's a star-making turn for lovable English lad Douglas Booth. Remember his name, too, because you'll be seeing him in other notable works down the line.
In the meantime, soak up his flawless American accent alongside the equally adorable Alison Pill (The Newsroom) and the deadpan funny Patrick J. Adams (Suits) for a peppy, oftentimes purposefully irreverent end result that was written for the screen and directed by José Avelino Gilles Corbett Lourenço. The cinematic fun all builds to an ending that romantic-comedy lovers might see as a betrayal, but they may not have heard of the novel.

Note: The following story contains spoilers from “The Sex Lives of College Girls” Season 3, Episode 3.
After a bittersweet goodbye to Reneé Rapp’s Leighton Murray in “The Sex Lives of College Girls,” the now-trio is introduced to their new roommate, Kacey, played by Gracie Lawrence.
Despite rooming with the girls — Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott), Bela (Amrit Kaur) and Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) — Kacey’s interest in getting to know her roommates is “nonexistent,” according to Lawrence, given Kacey’s goal to “spend as much time with her boyfriend as possible” after transferring to Essex College to be with him.
“The idea of making friends is totally irrelevant to her — it’s not even on her radar — [her boyfriend] is the center of her universe, and she doesn’t really have much interest in anything outside of him, socially,” Lawrence told TheWrap. “It’s a fun place to meet a character, because inevitably, when things get upended,...

We can always count on HBO and Max to deliver some of the biggest and best shows on TV. Although there's no new season of House of the Dragon coming in 2025, there are new seasons of The White Lotus, The Last of Us, The Gilded Age, and Hacks on the way in the new year.
Unfortunately, there are a few HBO and Max shows that will probably get canceled in 2025. Those are the shows we're talking about now.
On the bright side, there aren't that many popular HBO and Max shows that will be on the chopping block in 2025. Many of the established shows, like The White Lotus, should have blanket renewals. As long as the creators have a story to tell, they should be easily renewed.
