Following news of the show’s cancellation, co-creators Justin Noble and Mindy Kaling have taken to social media to honor the series.

Noble shared an Instagram post in which he said there are “discussions with some new potential homes for the show,” adding, “But regardless of what happens, I’m proud of this show and the work that so many incredibly talented people put into it.”

The showrunner said this was “not the outcome that I saw coming,” noting the series was “listed as the most watched or second most watched scripted show on the entire platform, for about 70 straight days.”

Created by Mindy Kaling, The Sex Lives of College Girls debuted on Max in November 2021 and followed the journey of four new freshman suite mates attending the fictional Essex College, played by Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur, Alyah Chanelle Scott, and Reneé Rapp. While Rapp left in the second episode of Season 3, Mia Rogers and Gracie Lawrence joined the show to fill out the sophomore year setting, which will seemingly act as the last.

Variety confirms that Max has officially canceled The Sex Lives of College Girls after three seasons. The series is reportedly being shopped to other platforms for a possible Season 4, but Warner Bros. Television did not comment on the situation. The news comes nearly two months after the Season 3 finale, now seemingly the series finale, aired on Jan. 23, 2025.

On Tuesday afternoon, Max left many viewers stunned when it canceled The Sex Lives of College Girls.

The comedy series was rare in that it was genuinely funny, with powerhouse performances from its leads, Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur, Reneé Rapp, and Alyah Chanelle Scott.

Simply put, the series cut through a world with a lot of TV, which rarely happens.

The cancellation occurred mere months after the conclusion of the third season, leaving everyone wondering where the series could go next.

Instead of the cliffhangers we were accustomed to with the first two seasons, most storylines were closed up reasonably well, hinting that creatives were unsure about the show’s prospects.

Teen-focused series on Max don’t tend to stand the test of time, as evidenced by the Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars reboots being scrapped after their sophomore seasons.

Though “Sex Lives of College Girls” fans know Gracie Lawrence as Kacey, a theater nerd and the new fourth roommate in Season 3, things could have been much different.

“She was a finalist to play Kimberly in Season 1,” co-creator and executive producer Justin Noble says, adding that Lawrence was in the final three under consideration for the role, which eventually went to Pauline Chalamet. But two seasons later, as the minds behind “Sex Lives of College Girls” conceptualized Kacey for the small screen, Lawrence’s audition once again stood out.

“She’s so funny and charming,” Noble says, comparing Lawrence’s take on Kacey to a “cute little Reese Witherspoon character” who rounds out the rest of the cast.

Season 3 of The Sex Lives of College Girls has seen some big changes, from Reneé Rapp's departure to the introduction of two new characters in Kacey (Gracie Lawrence) and Taylor (Mia Rodgers). But as a result of these changes, Whitney's (Alyah Chanelle Scott) character has slipped through the cracks, and with just two episodes remaining, the show still has no idea what to do with her character. Both Bela (Amrit Kaur) and Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) have more clearly defined arcs in Season 3, but Whitney's is all over the place, introducing new conflicts that are either quickly resolved or abandoned completely. In Season 3, the time The Sex Lives of College Girls spends fleshing out its new characters comes at the expense of Whitney’s development and speaks to a larger problem with the series’ lack of cohesion and connectivity to the previous seasons.

In “Young Werther,” director Jose Avelino Gilles Corbet Lourenco has a tough task. How to distill the eighteenth-century Goethe classic and transpose it into the modern times where the rules of morality and relationships have undergone dramatic shifts? Would the same hero remain a fitting protagonist placed in a much different temporal context? Would his anxieties and desires ring with equal fervor and intensity?

The director must have foreseen a direct, too-faithful adaptation of the text would only spawn a slew of difficulties. What’s needed instead is levity and insouciance galore to pad the repurposing into the modern times. The bleakness of the text is reframed through a lens that has a mix of whimsy and self-awareness. The hero of the film can see to some extent the degree of his folly in his romantic pursuit. He is bullish and seems to know the task of his chasing would always be tricky.

Just two episodes into its third season, The Sex Lives of College Girls said goodbye to Reneé Rapp's Leighton Murray. Leighton has been one of the four roommates and main characters since the show's pilot, along with Whitney Chase (Alyah Chanelle Scott), Bela Malhotra (Amrit Kaur), and Kimberly Finkle (Pauline Chalamet). Although Leighton's (and Rapp's) send-off was beautiful and fitting for her character, it was sad to see her go. The Sex Lives of College Girls, for its part, has wasted no time in trying to move forward from this character exit, particularly with the introduction of two new characters.

Gavin Leatherwood stars as Nico Murray in Max's The Sex Lives of College Girls, but the actor doesn't appear past the first season. 

The comedy series follows the lives of four college roommates Kimerley (Pauline Chalamet), Bela (Amrit Kaur), Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott), and Leighton (Reneé Rapp) who all attend the fictional Essex college in Vermont. 

Season 1 also introduces Leatherwood's Nico, Leighton's brother, who becomes Kimberley's love interest.

Arguably one of the most insufferable protagonists in literature is the title figure in Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s “The Sorrows of Young Werther” — a martyr to unrequited love who ultimately commits suicide. The author soon distanced himself from this early work, despite the fame it brought him. No doubt that was largely because the fuel it provided for the subsequent Romantic movement (which he disdained) proved so flammable; there arose real-life cases of copycat self-annihilation amongst readers who fancied themselves as theatrically bereft as his hero.

Few beyond academics now are likely to recall the huge cultural impact the book had a quarter-millennium ago. Still, you needn’t be savvy to that historical footnote to enjoy the new “Young Werther” — though it does help. “Based on the smash hit 1774 novel of tragic romance,” as opening onscreen text announces, Jose Avelino Gilles Corbett Lourenco’s debut feature is a confident, clever update.

This week’s Elsbeth didn’t waste any time establishing that Michael Emerson’s character is up to no good: Within the first act of Thursday’s episode, the actor’s alter ego, Judge Crawford, was seen murdering someone. It's tempting to immediately judge Young Werther by its first 10-15 minutes, but if you hold out a little longer, the true movie will reveal itself. Based on the 1774 novel The Sorrows of Young Werther by Johann Wolfgang Goethe, the rougher edges of the book are sanded down and given a 21st-century sheen through the adaptation written and directed by José Lourenço. Though it was no easy task, Lourenço takes a rather dark and nihilistic story from Goethe and makes it plucky, bright, and an encouraging addition to the rom-com genre.

Young Werther follows the story of a passionate young novelist who, while on an errand in the city, encounters Charlotte. Despite her commitment to her fiancé Albert, Werther becomes entangled in an emotional affair with Charlotte, leading to a complex triangle of emotions and evolving relationships.

Alyah Chanelle Scott is opening up about Reneé Rapp’s exit from The Sex Lives of College Girls.

Rapp departed the Max series after appearing in a handful of episodes of Season 3, and filming the goodbye scene for the cast was emotional.

“It was a crazy day. Genuinely so strange because it kind of felt like this impending thing that we knew was at the bottom of the call sheet of course,” Scott said during an appearance on SiriusXM’s The Spotlight with Jessica Shaw. “They’re like, ‘It’ll be the last thing today,’ and in the back of your mind, you’re just like, ‘We have to do that scene.
